Help With My Article
Hello Valereee , I'm not sure if this is the place to ask or if requesting a specific user is allowed, but you've been so helpful and communicative that I thought I'd try. I have more information to add to my article, 1963 Freedom Ballot, but I feel I could improve the flow of what I already have before adding to it. I also wanted to know what to do if I can't find a non-licensed image. Most images I've found belong to a Matt Herron and The Image Works. Is it fine to leave out an image if there are none? Thank you! --MalachiReschke (talk) 19:25, 9 June 2019 (UTC)

Question

No Vacancy Lounge

Hi again! You helped with the Nostrana article recently. I was curious, do nightlife articles interest you as well, or more just food/restaurant content? Curious because I'm considering nominating Holocene (Portland, Oregon) and No Vacancy Lounge for Good article status after they receive copy edits from the Guild of Copy Editors. Your review of Nostrana was very helpful and thorough, so I was wondering if you might have any feedback on either article. If not, no worries, just figured I'd ask, and I'll still keep you in mind for restaurant articles. Either way, happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 03:09, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Another Believer, defunct nightlife articles interest me. I think I may have done such a review for you once before -- a gay bar called Three Sisters or something like that? If you nom them, let me know, and if I have time I'll help! I've got an article at GA myself right now, though, and another one I'm prepping for FA so have at peer review, so depending on whether anyone picks one of those up I could get busy fast. --valereee (talk) 10:56, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Valereee, Oh! I did not realize you had reviewed Three Sisters Tavern. Very cool! I will let you know. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:04, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, the copy edit for NVL is done, so I've nominated No Vacancy Lounge for Good status. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:13, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Not defunct, but I've nominated Holocene (Portland, Oregon) as well. ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:09, 7 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Another Believer, sorry, wasn't ignoring you! I've suddenly become super busy as I've been taking on a new role at DYK, and there's a steep learning curve on top of a fair workload as I try to improve my skills there. It's pretty likely that I won't have much time or mental energy for GA reviews for the short term, I'm afraid! --valereee (talk) 11:39, 8 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Valereee, No problem at all! You had asked to let you know if I nominated either, so that's all I was doing. Happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:42, 8 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You for Being the Wiki Whisperer

But seriously, I was so angry and frustrated and no one was helpful until you showed up. Too many Y chromosomes and I felt ganged up on for trying to be Bold, as Wikipedia asks, but also careful, and Neutral, while also being caring, and on top of that, inexperienced! I won't be able to learn all the cool wiki symbols and tricks and that's okay, I have other skills. Your kindness was deeply appreciated, and your advice was very helpful. Also, I'm trying never to be attached to the outcome. It's been a horrific year for my family. So this stuff here is really nothing to lose sleep over. But I did. Because, like you warned me not to, I cared TOO much. Thank you again. PESchneider (talk) 18:38, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

PESchneider thank you for your kind words, and I'm glad we were able to help! Leave me a message here if you ever need more whispering! :) --valereee (talk) 18:42, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I know I will be back! Cuz. Humans... :D PESchneider (talk) 20:59, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

PESchneider, hahaha! I'm glad you're keeping your sense of humor. I hope that the coming year will be better for you and yours. --valereee (talk) 21:00, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Personal data like nudism

Dear Valereee

In the page about vandalism you mentioned some data about nudism. I'm not accusing you of anything. I just wanted to add MY opinion: In my opinion the information about someone being a nudist, weather confirmed or not, should only be reported by the person him/her-self, not by anybody else. Steue (talk) 21:11, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Steue, I'm so sorry, I don't remember the page we're talking about -- can you give me a link so I can refresh my memory? --valereee (talk) 21:17, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Vandalism / Talk / 3 blp vandalism on pages with few watchers.
Sorry, I don't know how to make it one functioning link. Steue (talk) 21:52, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism BLP?

Dear Valereee

In the page about vandalism you used the abbreviation "BLP". Neither in the article about Phil Spencer nor in the English Wikipedia I could find an explanation what BLP might mean in this case. Please let me know. And, maybe, you might as well add your usage of BLP to the article BLP. Steue (talk) 21:41, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Aha!: Wikipedia_talk:Vandalism#blp_vandalism_on_pages_with_few_watchers
Steue, BLP is WP-talk for Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons, that is, WP-articles about living (and recently dead) people. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 21:50, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
GGS, thanks! Steue I agree -- people probably shouldn't be described as nudists/naturists unless they describe themselves that way. That's why we wouldn't include it unless it was very reliably sourced or self-sourced. In the case of the article I was referring to, someone had added it without sourcing. I was concerned that no one had caught it for over a week. No one seems to have responded to the question for six weeks now, I'm updating it, so thanks for reminding me! --valereee (talk) 22:00, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
GGS, Thanks a lot for this fast answer. Steue (talk) 22:15, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
GGS, Another question: How could I have gotten this link after your "Aha!", to add it in a question? Steue (talk) 22:15, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Steue, I clicked the "blp vandalism" section in the "Contents" box at Wikipedia talk:Vandalism, copypasted the Wikipedia_talk:Vandalism#blp_vandalism_on_pages_with_few_watchers bit from the url and put it between double square brackets. More at Help:Link. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:03, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Steue, there's also a way to "search" for these acronyms -- which we have a million of -- when someone uses one and doesn't provide the link. If you go up to the search box and type in WP:BLP (or whatever acronym, as long as you put the WP: before it) you'll get the link to the page explaining it. If you just have a random question about how to edit wikipedia, you can often find what you're looking for that way, by typing in WP: and then adding a search term like vandalism or help. --valereee (talk) 11:00, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

GGS, Thanks. I suppose you clicked with the second mouse button and selected, in the context menu, "Copy link-address". I tried this and it worked fine. So, thanks alot, also for the Help:Link.
Steue (talk) 05:26, 18 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Before I "dive" into the Help:Link, another question: Can one link to a para which does not appear in the context-box, or even to a sentence or word?
Steue (talk) 05:35, 18 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Steue, I'm sorry, I'm not understanding your question -- you can link to any word or term that shows up when you start searching on it in the search box, is that what you're asking? --valereee (talk) 10:52, 18 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, valereee. Next time I shall try this first, before I search outside.
Steue (talk) 05:44, 18 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

valereee, I wanted to place "a link in a talk page" to "a specific word in a specific para in a specific article", a link which then only will have to be clicked to open this article at exactly this word in this para.
Steue (talk) 07:31, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for troubling you with this question. But actually I meant this question to the User:Gråbergs Gråa Sång. I should have put my question to his talk-page. Steue (talk) 07:42, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Valereee will probably forgive it, struggling to improve ones WP-fu is a noble task. Steue, I don't think that is possible, AFAIK the closest we get is "Linking to part of a section", see WP:LINKPART. I've never created "anchors" myself so I've never tried to make this work. One thing, you never have to "ping" someone at their own talkpage, it makes no difference. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:38, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You!

I just wanted to leave you a star for looking into my problem so quickly, but I forget where it was that I could access those from. Anyways, I see you are working on women journalists and veganism, among other things, so I can tell you are an awesome person. Thanks a bunch, and nice to meet you.

Usedtobecool Nice to meet you, too! If you add four tildes to the end of your comments on talk pages like this ~~~~ it will automatically sign your posts for you so that other editors can see who is talking! --valereee (talk) 19:00, 17 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I always keep forgetting that. Thanks for the reminder! This is the one thing that's hardest for me to always remember. Many times, I end up doing that on subsequent visits, or some bot does, before I have the chance. LOL! Usedtobecool (talk) 19:07, 17 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There are also two other ways. At the top of the editing box on talk pages, there's a little x-squiggle icon which will sign. At the bottom, there's a note that allows you to click the four tildes, that'll also sign. You'll find that as a new user most other editors will be patient with you about this, but as your edit count grows, they'll start getting grouchy with you. :) valereee (talk) 19:09, 17 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I am enjoying being a novice editor. So many things you can get away with. I love how polite experienced editors are. I wish I could always remain new :) Usedtobecool (talk) 19:37, 17 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Usedtobecool, hahahahaha! valereee (talk) 21:31, 17 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

NPR Newsletter No.18

Hello Valereee,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:

 • Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
 • Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
Reliable Sources for NPP

Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.

Backlog drive coming soon

Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.

Hi, if you'd like to help with hook promotions, this hook was approved by both Cwmhiraeth and myself so we need someone else to promote it to prep. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 17:23, 26 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yoninah, off I go! --valereee (talk) 17:25, 26 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. But please note that you added a film hook to a set that already has a film hook. Yoninah (talk) 17:43, 26 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yoninah, yep, I just posted a query about that on the talk, lol! I misread it as a bio --valereee (talk) 17:49, 26 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hook promotions

Hi Valereee, glad you're getting more involved in hook promotions. I'd just like to note that it's difficult to build prep sets with the proper alternating bio/non-bio format when you've already placed the last hook. As you can see in Prep 3, the set should end on a bio hook. And we can't move your last hook up because it's the second nature hook in the set. It will probably have to be moved to the next set. Then, based on what you placed as the last hook in Prep 4, the image hook needs to be a non-bio hook, although we're due for a bio image. I think it would be more helpful if you build more complete sets rather than leave it to others to figure out how to rework the order. Please feel free to ping me on my talk page with any questions at all. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 14:58, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

DYK credit lines

Hi, you need to copy the whole credit line, including the subpage (that's the nomination page). See how I corrected your credit lines in Prep 3. Yoninah (talk) 18:30, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yoninah, got it...for some reasn I thought the template made its own subpage section...hm, trying to remember where I saw that instruction... valereee (talk) 18:49, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Here it is, from the expandable instructions section: b. Check the DYKmake entries in Preview mode 1. At the bottom under "Credits" to the right of the article should have the link "View nom subpage" ; if not, a subpage parameter will need to be added to the DYKmake. So it didn't make that parameter, but I failed to notice it hadn't? --valereee (talk) 18:50, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
a subpage parameter will need to be added is referring to what you have to do. It's not automatic. Yoninah (talk) 18:56, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yoninah, I just added one without adding the subparameter to see what would happen, and it did create one? --valereee (talk) 19:01, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No, it didn't. You need to copy the WHOLE credit line, including the part that says . Yoninah (talk) 19:09, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Adding it, but I'm confused lol, taking your word for it and I'm sure all will become clear to me at some point --valereee (talk) 19:14, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Please add the credit line for Nancy Pelosi. (After you close the template, you won't find it in the edit window. You have to go to a previous version and find it there.) Yoninah (talk) 19:43, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yay! Yoninah (talk) 19:45, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yoninah, I opened the hooks section accidentally, just went ahead and saved, then opened the full page --valereee (talk) 19:46, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure what you're referring to? Yoninah (talk) 19:47, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The reason the credit line didn't show up for Nancy Pelosi when I added it to the hooks. I'd opened the hooks section instead of the page, which meant the credits section wasn't included. --valereee (talk) 20:00, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I do that a lot too. Yoninah (talk) 20:32, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Prep 4

Congratulations on building your first set! You might want to keep an eye on the history of Prep 4 to see what kinds of changes are being made. A heads-up: You have two hooks by Cwmhiraeth here; one should be moved to a different set. I have also raised an issue with the hookiness of the church hook at WT:DYK#Church opens, closes, opens again. Yoninah (talk) 21:39, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Switched one of Cwmhiraeth's to a later prep and moved in a new quirky. While I was moving it in I found that the DYK credit line was malformed, so I fixed it in the prep but wasn't sure if I should also fix it in the nom. It gives credit to Ia1nmacintyre, should give it to Iainmacintyre. Looks like it was a typo when the nom was first made that the nom corrected in a later edit. --11:45, 28 May 2019 (UTC)
No, you don't need to fix the nomination template. The main thing is that the credit line appears correctly on the prep set page. Sometimes you'll have to write your own credit lines when you promote a hook because the nominator didn't input the information correctly, so get used to the format: . BTW, if there is only a page creator and not a nominator on the quirky hook, you should delete the line at the bottom: Example. Best, Yoninah (talk) 12:37, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops, I didn't see the discussion re: St John's had continued on the talk page last night. I read the edit summary and was like, "ALT2? Where is there an ALT2?" Thanks! --valereee (talk) 13:25, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Prep 5

Hey, you're on the move! Here's another note, this one about hook length and balance. Try to mix up short and long hooks. Also don't use too many short hooks in a set, or else an administrator will have to add a 9th hook when it gets to the queue. Best, Yoninah (talk) 20:26, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I actually wondered about that when I added Hanks and Trainor, thanks! --valereee (talk) 20:56, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I went ahead and moved Trainor to another set, which already has one short hook, so that's enough there. You'll see I added more long hooks to Prep 5. We have a lot of these "people buried in Russian cemeteries" now on the approved page, so we need to spread them out and not necessarily run all of them in the image slot. Yoninah (talk) 21:21, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Drat! Look here: [2]. It's really short! Yoninah (talk) 21:23, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yoninah, yow, that's really short! What a handy tool, though, glad to know I can use that. Hm. What's best to do? --valereee (talk) 21:26, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think we should wait for the nominator's response to a rewrite on the image hook, and then add a ninth hook if it's still necessary. It looks like one shorty hook in a set is enough. Yoninah (talk) 21:28, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yoninah, we can also expand to the full name of Lockhart. Reason for using just the last name is that the nom thought a spy was more credible being referred to as only the last name, but didn't have a major objection. Article is James Bruce Lockhart so that gives us a full two more words lol --valereee (talk) 21:42, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Very funny. No, I thought about it and decided to leave the surname per the nominator's wishes. An administrator is sure to fix this himself when it's in the queue. Yoninah (talk) 10:25, 29 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The Signpost: 31 May 2019

I made changes per my suggestion – I dropped in a note – about the place of Denisovans in Human evolution. If that works, we could copy those changes to the other article in the DYK. Please take a look. 7&6=thirteen () 12:34, 1 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good to me! --valereee (talk) 12:46, 1 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'll take it there. Cheers. 7&6=thirteen () 14:39, 1 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Too many cemeteries and burials

Dear Valereee and Cwmhiraeth, we really need to space out the Russian cemetery hooks a lot more. We currently have 139 approved hooks, so we can afford to run them once a week (or more) rather than every few days. I returned the double hook that had been moved to Prep 2 to WP:DYKNA for later promotion, as Prep 3 already has another one of them. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 18:56, 1 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yoninah, that's perfect, it gets a musical hook out so that Halca can move in and the spec occ hook replace the Halca hook! --valereee (talk) 19:57, 1 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Prep 5

Hi, I wonder if I could ask you to stop placing these sexual-innuendo nature hooks in the quirky slot. Quirky means light, different, unusual, funny. For the same reason, I've often been told not to run deviant-sex hooks in the last slot, no matter how quirky they seem to me. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 22:03, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, never occurred to me that there was anything sexual about this, as it's a pea crab and a slipper limpet. I assume they can't reproduce together. I just thought it was a quirky bit of interesting nature lore. The fact the pea crab's lifecycle involves something that affects its host's ability to reproduce doesn't seem remotely sexual or sexually deviant to me; it's just "Wow, no, I didn't know that! How interesting!" If someone is asking us not to put this kind of hook into the quirky slot -- for no reason other than the fact someone might think of it as remotely sexual -- I'd want to argue with them about it. That just seems kind of...well, I hate to use the word silly, but it certainly seems hypersensitive to anything that could be remotely called sexual. --valereee (talk) 22:12, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you promoted a hook with a similarly raunchy angle only 4 sets before (now in Queue 1). We see stuff like this in the April Fools set; I personally would never highlight it by putting it in the quirky slot.
I'd also like to mention that you should feel free to edit hooks after you promote them. Often the nominator isn't familiar with DYK style of putting the target article in the front of the hook, or there are too many blue links. It doesn't help that many of these hooks are reviewed by editors who know even less than the nominator. Here is an example of fixing hooks after promotion. Best, Yoninah (talk) 22:43, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I've been wondering about how much editing I can do, and I've been reluctant to do it without pinging nom and reviewer to the talk page. I'm building this set today with the intention of spending tomorrow morning doing a re-review of each of the hooks. Not sure that's the most efficient way to do it, but trawling through the approved noms over and over didn't seem efficient either, so I'm giving this a try. Advice appreciated.
Re: Calma glaucoides. There is nothing inherently sexual or even raunchy about an anus. It's how an organism removes food waste from its body. This an organism that doesn't require what most people would think was an essential organ for any organism bigger than a cluster of cells. To me this seems inherently quirky, just as it would if it didn't need a means of taking nutrients in. I'm sorry, I just don't see this as in any way raunchy. It's just interesting. I'm totally not trying to be obtuse; if there is past discussion of this that can make it clear to me, I want to go through it. This just seems like interesting zoology. --valereee (talk) 22:58, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No, I don't think there is previous discussion about it. I'm just hypersensitive about running language like this in the quirky slot.
And in general, I don't put nature hooks in the quirky slot unless they are really exceptional. If they're good hooks, they run in the middle of the set. If they have a good hook and a good image, they go to the image slot.
Thank you, this is a much better quirky. I moved the 2nd nature hook in the set on to Prep 6. Best, Yoninah (talk) 23:33, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You're the expert here. I'm totally willing to follow your lead at this point. I'll try to avoid reproductive and waste elimination hooks in the quirky slot for now, reserving the right to revisit discussion when I've got more experience. :D --valereee (talk) 23:38, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Two female singer hooks? --valereee (talk) 08:36, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Not really same topic but close: today we have a Japanese voice artist because it's her birthday, fine, but do we need another one (Halca) tomorrow? And is simply Halca even a good article name? It could be anything, a plant, a dish, a poem, you name it. (Was moved by JHunterJ, for "precision", as usual.) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:01, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Immaculate Conception

Just wanted to say that this hook promotion is a classic example of what I answered you on my talk page, about why it takes so long to build a prep set. The hook you promoted with the image is not that good. The hook you suggest is better. In such a case, I would have continued the discussion on the nomination page before promoting anything. After I worked out with the nominator what exactly can be promoted (the good hook or the bad hook), I would promote accordingly (yes image slot or no image slot). Because now, if the answer to your query is negative at WT:DYK, you're going to move the weak hook out of the image slot and risk hurting the nominator's feelings after they've seen it there.

Take your time building sets. You can stop at the end of the day and continue the next, and nothing will happen to them. And if someone (me, Cwmhiraeth) does add a hook you didn't plan on including, just move it to the next set and put in the one you want. The main thing is that the hooks you promote shouldn't be subject to question by other editors. Yoninah (talk) 11:22, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Got it, ask questions first, shoot later. :D --valereee (talk) 11:29, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yoninah, wait, are you talking about the image hook? I didn't promote that one, or Lady Ponce, or the Taylor Swift (which made a second female pop singer), or the Molniya orbit, which made a second military hook. :D --valereee (talk) 12:18, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Facepalm Facepalm Mea culpa. I neglected to check the page history. You did good, commenting at WT:DYK on the hook promoted by someone else. But my point about spending too much time still applies :) Yoninah (talk) 13:03, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yoninah, lol no worries! For a minute there I was thinking, "Why did I promote that...?" because I've actually been trying to do what you suggested for the past few days -- asking questions at the nom review while I'm looking for a hook, then moving on to the next nom as I look for the next hook. I've even started trying to remember to start my questions with, "Came here to promote, but I've got a question..." as I've seen you doing and which seems to me is more likely to get someone's attention than a question from what looks like a random drive-by crank. And I guess the other thing I could have done, and maybe it would be more productive, was move that hook to a later prep so that a promoter who actually likes the hook could work with it. Which I think I may do with Taylor Swift. --valereee (talk) 13:10, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Zhang Dongju

On 7 June 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Zhang Dongju, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Zhang Dongju, Chen Fahu, and J.-J. Hublin discovered that a fossil jaw from Baishiya Cave belonged to the first known Denisovan outside Siberia and the first known human on the Tibetan Plateau? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Zhang Dongju. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Zhang Dongju), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Thank you! --MalachiReschke (talk) 19:25, 9 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
