Trash Taste is a weekly audio and video podcast hosted by YouTubers Joey Bizinger, Connor Colquhoun, and Garnt Maneetapho. The show is primarily focused on the anime and manga fandom and Japanese popular culture.[2]

History

The podcast was started in February 2020 by GeeXPlus, a subsidiary of BookWalker (Kadokawa Corporation), who invited the hosts of the podcast to relocate to Japan in order to host it.[3][4] The podcast's first three episodes amassed more than one million views on YouTube.[5] The hosts are known to use the word like frequently.[6]

On 26 May, 2021, Trash Taste moved out of Studio One, a day after recording their final live stream.[7]

Format

Trash taste is a term used to denote a taste in anime which is not considered popular.[8] The term is often used by both Joey and Garnt, describing not just anime, but jokingly about other things as well. Discussions in the podcast are thus more than just anime and delve in various topics including otaku culture, life in Japan, and YouTube drama.

The show's three hosts commonly refer to themselves as "the boys," with one taking lead host to direct the discussion and the other two providing color commentary. On some podcasts, a fourth person will join as a special guest with the whole episode devoted to that person. Generally, each episode is two hours long that is broken-up intermittently with sponsor spots and a list of all Patreon subscribers at the near end. The intro and outro title card features the copyright free Mama Mười Bảy (instrumental), by Omen.[9]

The podcast's producer is Meilyne Tran, with video editing by Toomas Lismus.[1][10]

YouTube

The Trash Taste podcast utilizes three channels on YouTube. The first and main is Trash Taste, which includes all the podcast episodes, specials and animated shorts. The second, Trash Taste After Dark, are recorded livetreams from Twitch. The third, Trash Taste Highlights, provide short clips from the podcast that are either significant or interesting piece.

  • Trash Taste began on 14 February 2020, posting its first video on 5 June 2020; it hit 100 thousand subscribers on 12 June 2020. It currently has 929 thousand subscribers as of 27 May 2021.[11]
  • Trash Taste After Dark (originally as Trash Taste Streams) began on 23 August 2019, posting its first video on 28 January 2021; it hit 100 thousand subscribers on 24 February 2021. It currently has 187 thousand subscribers as of 27 May 2021.[12]
  • Trash Taste Highlights began on 14 February 2020, posting its first video on 6 June 2020; it hit 100 thousand subscribers on 26 July 2020. It currently has 454 thousand subscribers as of 27 May 2021.[13]

Reception

General public reception have been mostly positive, with several podcast review sites giving five-star ratings, or rank high in various categories, including Apple Podcasts and Podbay.fm.[22][23][24]

More critical have been Japanese YouTubers, which will typically create reaction videos from the podcast. One episode, "Our Trash Taste in YouTubers" in which they discuss Japanese reaction videos, had generated mostly negative responses from Japanese viewers. Japanese YouTubers Yuta Aoki (That Japanese Man Yuta) and Ryu Japan responded in explaining that some of the comments were offensive, either at a social hierarchy standpoint or more specifically that English speaking Japanese are not as authentic to provide a reaction video.[25][26]
