Memorable comments from discussions I've been in:
  • I flipped a three-sided coin, it came up "no consensus". --Kbdank71 (talk) 20:32, 13 November 2006 (From a talk page discussion)
  • Outline my position, which is actually built on a big pile of marbles in a game of kerplunk and the straws are slowly being pulled - Hiding (talk) 08:49, 17 November 2006 (From an edit summary)
  • While the essay WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS may be useful for other XfD discussions, it isn't as useful for CfD, due to a commonality of consistancy due to prior consensus. The guideline WP:OCAT is an excellent example of this. And the same seems true for WP:ALLORNOTHING. - jc37 17:12, 9 April 2007
Due to a what of what due to what? Please rephrase for us simple folk. Picaroon 01:23, 12 April 2007 (From a WP:DRV discussion.)
  • I think I was more involved with the fiction MOS when it was started than I am now, I have kind of given up on those sort of pages, no sooner do you get it all straight, have a few drinks to celebrate, put the chairs on the table and start mopping up than a whole new crowd walks in ready to get it all straight again. - Hiding 21:03, 2 November 2007 (from a talk page discussion)
  • But in my experience, every talk page of XfD closers seems to be filled with vehemence about disagreement of a closure. Nice to know that you've managed to (mostly) somehow avoid that. ("somehow" - you'll have to loan me your special medallion sometime : ) - jc37 00:11, 6 March 2008

Hi Jc. I am pleased to see you are active again. I missed you. I hope you are well. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 05:35, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for closes

Thank you for running through the Requests for Closure page. I try to close the oldest ones that my time allows but the ones that are old are generally that way because they are long, controversial, or both so I have to mentally set aside time for inevitable questions. I admire the efficiency that you were able to show today in attacking these and appreciate the activity. Thanks again. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 18:30, 3 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Admin's Barnstar
I noticed that you've worked hard lately to provide the community the opportunity and sound choices to resolve some long-standing issues. While there may be some resistance to these offers, I think it's important that people work to find solutions when difficulties are presented. I commend you for your efforts, and I hope that any opposition to your work will not dissuade from continuing some excellent efforts. I just wanted to thank you for all the hard work over many years that you've contributed to the project. TY Jc. — Ched (talk) 16:59, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

+1 I appreciate your work as well. Thank you for your proposal, and for allowing others the opportunity to register our disagreement with the current state of affairs. Ruth Bader Ginsberg rightly said that "dissents speak to a future age", and I like to keep that in mind whenever a proposal goes the other way. Wug·a·po·des 22:17, 29 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiproject Tambayan Philippines template

Hi Jc37, regarding your advice related to these edits, I have found that while there is no Category:Philippine History articles there is a Category:WikiProject Philippine History, I think from some ancient merger of it as a separate Wikiproject. Would restoring the removed code allow for those categories to remain intact? Thanks, CMD (talk) 11:01, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:Nathan Edmondson

Hi. I've been trying to contact you, both with "pings" and with a message on the WikiProject page, about three newbie accounts that have been blanking relevant, source-supported content from the Nathan Edmondson article because it constitutes critical information about him, specifically a past arrest for credit card theft and sexual harassment allegations. They have ignored repeated warnings placed on their talk pages, as well as invitations to a talk page discussion where two other editors agreed the sexual harassment allegation material should remain, and a third agrees the credit card theft info should stay. They persistently revert the material, falsely claiming in edit summaries that the material is "vandalism", that the is sourced to "blogs" (they are not), etc. Can you please revert to the most recent intact version and lock down the article to incentivize that editor to join the discussion, and join it yourself. Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 14:22, 3 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Need an objective viewpoint

Hi, Jc. Listen, I need your help with something. I'd like to pose to you a hypothetical scenario, one arising from a current conflict I'm embroiled in, and ask you three questions about it, as a thought experiment. I wanted to ask you because you've given good advice and counsel in the past, but have never rubber-stamped any of my positions or conduct, I figured I'd get a fairly objective answer, rather than a biased one. Are you available? Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 03:24, 11 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Admin notices

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Re one of your closes

Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/Archive 183#RFC: Pending-changes protection of Today's featured article

Are you willing to change this close? Given the result in Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/Archive 178#Pending-changes protection of Today's featured article, it's clear there were (in two successive RfCs) a consensus to protect the TFA. There isn't really a good basis to discount votes when, ultimately, the discussion is about changing policy. Fair enough if it's about changing a fundamental long-standing policy, you could say that needs successive RfCs with high participation. But here we're not changing policy, and there were two successive RfCs with more or less the same result. My reading of your close is that it agrees there's a majority for full semi-protection implementation, but you disagreed it amounts to a consensus for more than a trial due to the inertia of extant policy. I don't think that's correct, but the inconvenience of having to run a third RfC wouldn't really outweigh the efforts in making a close challenge except that it seems to have discouraged technical admins sufficiently such that nobody is implementing the close, thus making the entire RfC moot.

To be clear, I'm not really saying the close should be changed because people are unwilling to implement your decision as-is. I'm saying IMO the reading was incorrect, but not worth appealing in itself, but since people aren't willing to implement that reading it's now worth challenging. Basically, would you update your close to drop the 'trial' provisions and recognise the "auto-semi-protection" result? ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 02:59, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A Barnstar for you!

The WikiProject Barnstar
Thank you so very much for reorganizing all the barnstars on WikiProject Wikipedia Awards. I always wanted to do that but didn't have any idea as to how. Judekkan (talk) 20:15, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Judekkan, Thank you very much. I do appreciate it.
As I mentioned at SilkTork's talk page, I've been meaning to do that for years but just kept putting it off. Hopefully this will make the page more accessible, and help people more easily find what they are looking for. I know that for me it had become more and more of a task to navigate that page. It was slow going, but I think it it was worth it.
And thanks again. I really do appreciate it. I hope you're having a great day too : ) - jc37 20:43, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Jc37 Yeah, I've tried several times to get consensus from WP:WPAwards to have the topical barnstars separated but had little response. But it was a waste of time, since I just add barnstars without consensus to WP:BARN anyways. I'm glad now that was done. I think there was several mentions about the lengthy scroll-time searching for a barnstar being an issue. Again though, thank you for fixing the biggest obstacle to WP:WPAwards. You have a nice day and have a Merry Christmas. Judekkan (talk) 20:57, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Sixteenth Adminship Anniversary!

I’ve been inexplicably blocked

Hi, Jc. Happy New Year.

I'm sorry to bother you, but I just saw that I cannot edit Wikipedia from my desktop computer, because it says "This IP address has been blocked from editing Wikipedia", even though I am signed into my username account, and have received no warnings or indications of any kind that any behavior on my part was being disruptive. The message I get when I try to edit says "Even when blocked, you will usually still be able to edit your user talk page and email administrators and other editor", but even this is not the case, so I had to compose this in Gmail, send it to myself, and then paste it here with my cell phone. Can you help? Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 02:04, 12 January 2023 (UTC) Nightscream (talk) 02:04, 12 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
