Hello, I created this account and the screen that appeared told me that I could ask any questions here. What are some rules and tips for new users editing Wikipedia? 84Swagahh (talk) 02:11, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello and welcome to Wikipedia, @84Swagahh. I would start with Help:Introduction and The Wikipedia Adventure. These will help explain our core policies and how to use parts of the software. If you feel up to the task, you can find out how to make an article at Your first article Happy editing, NW1223<Howl at me•My hunts> 02:18, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- New editors are advised to put in weeks to months improving existing articles before attempting to create new articles. See WP:42 for how to properly reference content. Adding content without references or removing referenced content you believe to be not true will be reverted (reversed) by other editors. David notMD (talk) 07:01, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- Advised, but they don't have to. My first edits were writing draft articles. Edward-Woodrow (talk) 23:38, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

- Hello, 84Swagahh, and welcome to the Teahouse and to Wikipedia.
- I agree with what the others have said, except for one thing: David notMD's advice seems to start from the idea that what everybody who edits Wikipedia wants do is create new articles. Maybe you will (in which case take David's advice to heart), maybe you won't. But please don't think that that is the only, or even necessarily the best, way to improve Wikipedia. ColinFine (talk) 14:25, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- I think David notMD was responding to @NightWolf1223's advice, not to the original poster. We really shouldn't be recommending to anyone with 3 edits that "If you feel up to the task, you can find out how to make an article at Your first article." Valereee (talk) 10:55, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
formal tone
My article was rejected and one of the reasons given was that was not written in a formal tone expected of an encyclopedia article. I believe that it meets that critera; this seems to be a subjective statement and I don't know exactly what I need to change.
I should note that my exact article was picked up and published verbatim on Wikitia.
Could someone please advise? thank you. RuthPres (talk) 21:24, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- Courtesy link: Draft:Tony Kenning
- All things aside, if you have published the same text verbatim on some other site (which does exist, see https://wikitia.com/wiki/Tony_Kenning), publishing the same text on Wikipedia may constitute as a WP:Copyright violation.
- Please also note that publishing on Wikitia does not mean anything for Wikipedia quality control. Do note that Wikitia is listed on Wikipedia:Spam blacklist. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 21:31, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- I did not publish the article on Wikitia; someone found my draft on this site and published it there without my knowledge or permission to do so. RuthPres (talk) 21:32, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- Well, thanks for clarifying. That is quite unfortunate... Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 21:34, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

- @RuthPres: Wikitia has nothing to do with Wikipedia, but anyone is allowed to copy from Wikipedia as long as they acknowledge the source. RudolfRed (talk) 21:32, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- OK thank you. Understand that this has no bearing on the situation, which is what I need to do to improve my article to meet criteria that I'm finding subjective and difficult to follow. Do you have any suggestions? RuthPres (talk) 21:34, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- In a few words, your draft gives too much tangential detail that does not strongly relate to the subject, which is Tony Kenning. Currently, there are many statements that don't relate to Kenning at all, such as After fronting for bands including Nemesis and Wild Mcbride, vocalist Paul Banks was the last member to sign on. Instead of writing about the bands Kenning was involved in, you should really be focusing on what Kenning was doing at what year at what place.
- It is generally not encouraged for new users to create an article immediately. I encourage you to practice editing and read some more Wiki biographies before you decide to write something.
- Your reviewer also wrote that This submission is not adequately supported by reliable sources. Please make sure you read WP:Reliable sources. For example, the first source you use is from Linkedin, which does not count as an RS.
- My suggestion for you is to evaluate what reliable sources you have, and condensate sentences from them. That means a lot of this article needs to be reworked. Good luck and have fun. Cheers, --The Lonely Pather (talk) 21:49, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- thank you for your feedback! RuthPres (talk) 21:52, 18 November 2023 (UTC)
- RuthPres, consider this: Elliott proposed "Deaf Leopard", a name he came up with while designing band posters in art class. Kenning suggested they use the phonetic spelling so they would sound less like a punk band, crossing out the “a” in “Def” and drawing a line down the “o” in “Leopard” to change the name to "Def Leppard". The members agreed and the name Def Leppard became permanent. This strikes me as terribly wordy. Try Elliott proposed "Deaf Leopard", but Kenning suggested that "Def Leppard" would look less like a punk band. -- Hoary (talk) 09:33, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- thank you for your feedback. I have made additional edit and also double checked all citations but have once again been rejected. I have spent almost a year on trying to meet the criteria for Wikipedia and now realize that that is just not possible with this submission. RuthPres (talk) 22:52, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
- You are free to abandon the draft if you wish. If there is no editing action it will be deleted in six months. A nuance: Declined (the response) is not the same as Rejected. The latter means that the Reviewer saw no potential to succeed. David notMD (talk) 10:43, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

I am needing someone to confirm the sources in Spanish 161.43.67.202 (talk) 00:19, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello IP and welcome to Wikipedia! I’m glad you have began contributing to a draft. Non-English sources are used often on Wikipedia, although English sources are naturally preferred for our readers to reference. If you need assistance with confirming the reliablity or contents of Spanish sources, I’d direct your attention to our list of translators here. Good luck with your draft: Our team that reviews them has a very low backlog currently, so you are likely to receive quick feedback. Is this appropriate in an article?
An article about a relatively small German art exhibition has a large section filled with tables detailing the exhibitions finances? And another section detailing the names of every administration person involved. This seems like excess detail that isn't covered in an independent/secondary source.
Can any editors take a look? I'm not actually sure what guideline to cite when removing. Zenomonoz (talk) 07:22, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, Zenomonoz. Have reliable sources called this art exhibition a
a relatively small German art exhibition
, or is that your own personal interpretation? The amount of detail to be included in an article about a "small" topic is not objectively quantifiable. All that detail needs to be verified, neutral and not undue. What is or is not undue is decided by policy-based discussions on the talk page of the relevant article, which is Talk: Freie Berliner Kunstausstellung. That is the first and best place to discuss the content dispute. Please start there. Cullen328 (talk) 07:37, 21 November 2023 (UTC)- I wrote the article in deWP, translated it and put the translation to enWP. It was worldwide the biggest art exhibition without curators on Messe Berlin. The asking man has special reasons for deleting as much as he can from articles I contributed. The conflict with him began in deWP where he was infinitly blocked yesterday. Andrea014 (talk) 07:47, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hmm after looking, Wikipedia guidelines actually do suggest against WP:INDISCRIMINATE detail, especially when they are from non-independent sources. Sure, it can take place on the talk page but teahouse is where you go when you're unsure about the guidelines. Looks like I've found it myself. Zenomonoz (talk) 07:55, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Zenomonoz, WP:ABOUTSELF may also be relevant. We are not here to replicate an org's own publications. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:43, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Given the dispute between the two editors (cf. AIV: Zenomonoz reported by Andrea014) my very strong advice to Zenomonoz is that they should walk away from the Freie Berliner Kunstausstellung article (and any other work done by Andrea014), because their criticism of such work looks like bad faith. If there is an issue with the tables in that article, some uninvolved editor will, sometime, come across them and deal with them. --Tagishsimon (talk) 13:25, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, this was resolved. For passing editors: Ive volunteered to not edit the page. Cheers. Zenomonoz (talk) 14:10, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you!
- It really is not possible to understand the conflict and my bad faith if you do not know its beginning in the German Wikipedia where Zenomonoz was blocked infinitly. Updated link to conflict management. Andrea014 (talk) 08:23, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Submit for review
Hi there, just made an article draft, now want to submit it for review, but can't find any control / link / button for that? Please advise. Draft is here just in case: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Andrey_Velikanov Thanks in advance for your help. Zanziver (talk) 12:07, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, @Zanziver! I've added the template with the button for submitting the draft. Happy editing! -- Maddy from Celeste (WAVEDASH) 12:10, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot Maddy! Zanziver (talk) 22:12, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Zanziver Don't submit your draft yet, or it will be rapidly declined. It does not comply with our policy on biographies which requires that all facts are backed up by inline citations to reliable sources. From a brief look at the sources you do supply, most are by Velikanov himself. We need several that are about him (see this advice) to demonstrate his wikinotability. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:43, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- We're talking here about Draft:Andrey Velikanov but we also have Draft:Andrey Velikánov. Both appear to have been started by User:Kol Lydia a few months ago, and who has been inactive since that time. Best to merge them to make sure we have all content in one place as the best, most-advanced version for continued editing. DMacks (talk) 19:55, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, my version is coming from Lidiya, it is the most recent one. Zanziver (talk) 22:07, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Michael, thanks a lot for the feedback! Sadly I submitted before reading your reply. There are many sources which are not online and not in web archive, so we used saved PDFs. Zanziver (talk) 22:10, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Zanziver You can continue to edit draft articles while they are waiting for review, although I note that Draft:Andrey Velikanov is currently declined because of all the external links. Sources do not need to be online (see WP:OFFLINE) provided they have been published by a reliable source. In listing his publications, you don't need to link to actual copies but just need full biographical details formatted in the templates {{cite book}} and {{cite journal}} etc. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:30, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

how to add my business detail to Wikipedia
hi friends, i am new here, can someone help me with how to add my business detail to Wikipedia, (how to list it on Wikipedia). thanks in advance. Sajjadnoorwala (talk) 14:51, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, Sajjadnoorwala, and welcome to the Teahouse. Wikipedia is not a web host for your company. It is not a place to advertise for it, either. —asparagusus (interaction) sprouts! 14:54, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- There are billions of people on the planet and millions of companies. Most do not have articles about them here on Wikipedia because they are not wikinotable. You have a clear conflict of interest in trying to promote your business here and while it is not prohibited that you create a draft (via WP:AfC) you must follow the mandatory disclosure laid out at WP:PAID. It will be difficult for you to write an acceptable draft, not least since you have no experience of writing on Wikipedia. Also it might not be a good idea. Please read carefully the information at the links we have provided. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:41, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, Sajjadnoorwala. Like many people, you have a fundamental misunderstanding of what Wikipedia is. If there are enough reliable independent sources about your business to base an article on (in Wikipedia jargon, if your business is notable), then somebody could write that article. If there are not, then no article is possible.
- If an article is written, it will not belong to you, it will not necesarily say what you want it to say, and it should be based almost entirely on what those independent sources say about your business (bad as well as good), not on what you say or want to say. See WP:PROUD. ColinFine (talk) 15:44, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
Rename page: Spark arrestor -> Spark arrester
The most common name for the device described at Spark arrestor is "Spark arrester"
The article has all the correct usage, but the title is incorrect The page cannot be renamed since an incorrect rename is already in place.
How do I request someone with page renamer rights to fix this?

- The Merriam-Webster Dictionary only recognizes Spark arrster. [1]https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/spark%20arrester. it is also the preferred spelling in government documents like [2]https://www.fs.usda.gov/t-d/pubs/html/03511307/03511307.htm and [3]https://www.mainelegislature.org/legis/statutes/12/title12sec9601.html Remaker (talk) 20:25, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

My edit shows up in my log but not when I access the article.
The article I edited is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natasha,_Pierre_%26_The_Great_Comet_of_1812. I added the regional staging in Atlanta in November 2023. The edit shows up in the history as being done on November 10. But the edit doesn't show in the actual article. What am I doing wrong or not doing?! AtlantaAH (talk) 01:28, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @AtlantaAH: It looks like it was reverted by another editor with the summary of "No inline URLs and the theatre has no Wikipedia article". You should discuss it on the article's talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 01:34, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @AtlantaAH: I've re-added it. user:Ponsonby100's removal was rather WP:POINTY. The addition should not have had an inline external link (which might have been removed leaving the underlying sentence in place), but the idea that "has no Wikipedia article" has any bearing on whether or not to keep the sentence is fallacious. --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:42, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Hi AtlantaAH. If you take a look at the page history for Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, you see that the edit you made was undone the following day by another editor named Ponsonby100, who left an edit summary stating "No inline URLs and the theatre has no Wikipedia article" explaining why they undid your edit. External links (links to websites outside of Wikipedia) are generally not allowed to be embedded into the bodies Wikipedia articles as explained here and here; moreover, Wikipedia articles aren't intended to include all information available about a subject as explained here. An article about a play, for example, might include content about various productions of the play, but these are probably going to be limited to only those productions performed by groups or performed at venues considered to be Wikipedia notable. My guess is that Ponsonby100 felt that the Horizon Theatre Company did not meet the criteria for being mentioned in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812#Regional and thus removed any mention of it. If you'd like further clarification of this, you may start a discussion about the removal at Talk:Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 since article talk pages a typically the best place to discuss edits made to articles. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:48, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for the time and attention you gave this. I appreciate the feedback and information. AtlantaAH (talk) 11:23, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

What can I do to edit on restricted pages?
Can someone tell me how this works? is it like you can do edits but before there set in stone one of the qualified users has to make sure it's not some toll edit? if so how can I became one of the qualified users? External Links Library (talk) 05:48, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi External Links Library. Wikipedia pages are protected for a variety of reasons. When you try to edit such a page, you should see the reason why it has been protected in a pink box near the top of the page and the type of protection being applied. There's also a table in at WP:PP#Comparison table that further clarifies how page protection works. Now, if you're still unable to figure things out after looking at that table, post the name of the page you want to edit here at the Teahouse. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:14, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- In short, to edit Semi-protected articles, you would require an account that is at least four days old and have made at least ten edits. For Extended confirmed protected articles, account needs to be 30 days old and have made at least 500 edits Jeraxmoira (talk) 06:17, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @External Links Library: If you'd like to make a change to a protected page, you can post your request on the article's talk page, using the {{SPER}}, {{EPER}}, or {{FPER}} for semi-, edit-confirmed, or fully-protected pages, respectively. GoingBatty (talk) 06:21, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @External Links Library Just to clarify: all Wikipedia editors are considered equally qualified and we assume good faith. However, some articles do get vandalised, which is by definition malicious, and the protection is to help prevent that. Unfortunately, it sometimes has the side-effect of making it more difficult for editors with fewer edit-counts and history here to make contributions but everyone can suggest improvements via the article's Talk Page, whether using the specific templates or just as a new comment. Does Wikipedia updates alert and notification status in a web browser while the browser is idle with a Wikipedia page open?
I use Firefox for Windows and I have alerts and notifications configured. Still, Wikipedia only shows me alert and notification updates when I refresh a page or open a new page or do some action that updates a page, such as navigation or editing. While a wikipedia page is just open and the browser is running idle, no new alerts appear (until I refresh a page). I expected it to periodically check notifications such as via a javascript. Does Wikipedia update alert and notification status in a web browser while the browser is idle with a Wikipedia page open? Please share your experience. I read the documentation about alerts and notifications and didn't receive a reply to this question. Maxim Masiutin (talk) 06:27, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

- The Your alerts and Your notices button located on the top right, after your username, does refresh when you click on it. I checked it now when Tenryuu replied here. - @Maxim Masiutin: Welcome to the Teahouse. As far as I can tell, there's no option to perform live updates for alerts and notifications, and I personally don't see a need for a tab on Wikipedia to hog more memory than it needs to. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 07:21, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

Citing an online dissertation
Hello. I need to cite a dissertation I found online. I've found Template:Cite thesis but when I insert the template into a page, it just inserts the text into the body of the article, instead of creating a cited reference. You can see it at Roland Arpin under the section "Later career" immediately after "Arpin later said:" Where am I going wrong? Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 08:25, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Oona Wikiwalker If you're using Visual Editor, type "<ref" in. It will automatically bring up a sub-menu of sorts for adding citations. Go to the "Manual" tab, click "Basic" and then add the "Cite thesis" template to the text box which pops up.
- If you're using Source Editor, enclose the template with a "<ref>" at the start and a "</ref>" at the end.
- I have made it a cited reference for you. WritingAboutCreepypastas (talk) 08:45, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Original Research or not?
I am currently working on my first article about a musical group (they do not have a wiki page).
First of all, I was able to organize an informal interview with this group and gathered information about the group themselves. Given that this information is unpublished (note that I do have all the evidence and messages we sent to each other), I was wondering if this would come under original research, and if it did, is there any way to not break this rule without having to publish this? AGB.Music (talk) 08:49, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Wikipedia articles merely collate published information. Original research will not be accepted. Please read WP:YFA and WP:42. Shantavira|feed me 09:12, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Would publishing this information online (with the evidence) allow me to use this? AGB.Music (talk) 09:14, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- No, because you posting it online somewhere would still be original research. If a third party conducts an interview and publishes it in a reputable magazine with editoral control and fact checking, that might be possible to use, but interviews do not contribute to notability(though they can be used for other purposes), because they are not an independent source about themselves.
- What is your connection to this group to be able to interview them? 331dot (talk) 09:21, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Indeed, what is this connection of yours that allows them to use for their publicity the photograph of them that you say is your own work? -- Hoary (talk) 09:25, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- I am not connecting in any means to them. I said "informal interview", I was simply able ask them questions personally. AGB.Music (talk) 10:13, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- So you just walked up to them and started asking them questions? 331dot (talk) 10:17, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Over the internet through their verified social media AGB.Music (talk) 10:24, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @AGB.Music Are you saying it is mere coincidence that your image is the same as one the group use on spotify? Irrespective of that, you can't use unpublished information you obtained via the internet, as no-one can verify what was said, a core Wikipedia policy. You must rely on these sorts of sources and pass the threshold of wikinotability. General advice for your Draft:Sentinel (DJ) is here and here. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:42, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- No it is not a mere coincidence, I have realized what I have done and feel pretty stupid (sorry I'm still learning). I'm going to rework the article so that it only contains information from published and citable sources. I actually don't have permission to use that picture, so I will be removing that too. Sorry for bothering you all, will make sure this won't happen again. AGB.Music (talk) 13:41, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

- @AGB.Music: Welcome to the Teahouse! In addition to the recommendations given above, please review Wikipedia's criteria for the inclusion of musical acts, called "notability", at WP:MUSICBIO. If the group doesn't meet any of the criteria detailed there, then the draft will not be accepted. GoingBatty (talk) 17:03, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Would publishing this information online (with the evidence) allow me to use this? AGB.Music (talk) 09:14, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, AGB Music. I'm afraid you are having what is a common experience for new editors who plunge into the challenging task of creating a new article before they have learnt much about how Wikipedia works. My advice is always to spend a few weeks or months learning this by making improvements to existing article, starting small and working up to the most important part which is finding and citing sources, before trying to create an article. I liken it to buying a violin and going out busking on the street the next day - you are not likely to have an enjoyable time. (I realise that you have been here a few months, but you had only made half a dozen edits before you created Draft:Sentinel (DJ), so I stand by that advice).
- Please understand that Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. Almost nothing that comes from the group (whether from their own website, or from interviews or press releases) is relevant to an article about them. And no unpublished information from any source can be used in any Wikipedia article. ColinFine (talk) 19:03, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Article move
Hi, I am here after the person who closed the move did not perform any move but mentioned that the move was performed. here. I have also approched the person on his talk page but there is no response yet here. What is the right approch to revert the move since the user that performed the move in the first place did not follow the consistency as discussed on the respective Wikiproject and the same was notified by another user to him. here for the actual move of the page:[[4]] 456legend(talk) 08:57, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Also this:here, where the original mover did not provide a reasonable justification for the move. 456legend(talk) 09:00, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi 456legend. Sometimes there is a technical issue which prevents a page being moved and some extra work is needed, or sometimes the person who closes later finds a reason that the move shouldn't be performed, although they should explain why in that situation. Or sometimes we just get distracted or make mistakes. I've asked BilledMammal to clarify, and if they still don't reply then I will perform the move myself later today.
- In the future, this should qualify as an uncontroversial technical request, and you can ask for someone to perform the move at WP:RM/TR. Thanks. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 14:39, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Ivanvector okay and thank you very much for the detailed insight. 456legend(talk) 17:54, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Translation
Hey! I have translated an article from Hindi Wikipedia (लाला हनुमन्त सहाय) about a great Indian freedom fighter Lala Hanumant Sahay. The draft is this - Lala Hanumant Sahay. How can I submit this translation draft? Please guide me! TheProEditor11 (talk) 12:13, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @TheProEditor11 There are two problems. The main one is that your draft cites no sources, which on the English Wikipedia is an immediate "fail" because we insist by policy that readers be able to verify what is written. The second is that you have not followed the guidance at WP:TRANSLATE which says that you must credit the original source. You can do that now by an edit summary or a comment on the draft's Talk Page. Submission is easy: there is a big blue button at the top of the draft to do that: but ensure you resolve the issues I've mentioned first. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:28, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Trying to create a business page for a company please help or get me started
I’m. Trying to create a page for a company that I see referenced a few times. It’s like the standard company pages you see for any company like meta, Eaton or the nBa. I’m really new to this but found lots of sources and content. Could someone help build this? It’s a big miss this page doesn’t exist for nVent Electric plc. I saw them at a super computing trade show last week and just discovered them
someone please help take this on and get a draft started for me. This is hard for someone new ElecAp2018 (talk) 12:53, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- ElecAp2018 First, Teahouse Hosts are here to advise, but not author or co-author. Second, I see you have created a very short draft at Draft:NVent Electric plc, submitted it and had it declined. The refs are insufficient to determine if the company is Wikipedia notable. See WP:NCORP for guide for articles about companies, and WP:42 for what constitues good references. David notMD (talk) 13:32, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @ElecAp2018: Welcome to the Teahouse! If you're not interested in creating the draft, you can ask in the appropriate section of Wikipedia:Requested articles, but there's no guarantee that any of the volunteer editors will be interested in creating it. GoingBatty (talk) 16:56, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, ElecAp2018. and welcome to the Teahouse, and to Wikipedia. Yes, it is indeed hard for someone new, which is why I always advise new editors to spend a few months making improvements to existing articles and learning how Wikipedia works before they even try it.
- When you have acquired an understanding of referencing notability, and acceptable sources, you can read WP:YFA and go ahead and try it.
- I must ask: do you have a connection with the company? When a new editor immediately starts creating an article, and works on nothing else, this is often the case. If you have a connection, you should read about editing with a conflict of interest. Further, if you are in anyway employed or paid by the company (even if working on this article is not part of your job), then you must read about paid editing and make the mandatory paid editing disclosure.
- Note that Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources.. DYK Nomination
So I've promoted Only Up! to GA status, and I've nominated it for the DYK section on the Main Page. I tried adding it to the prep area, but my edit was undone because the nomination needed to be closed. I'm not sure if you can close it yourself or if you need somebody else to do so. Thanks, TarantulaTM (speak with me) (my legacy) 15:16, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- I believe the idea is that someone other than you will close the nom and add it to the prep area. Sohom (talk) 20:47, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
General advice
Hi teahouse!,
I recently created an article and it was accepted, I was wondering if you could go over it and tell me how to improve it.
Thanks! Geardona (talk) 15:19, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- I would encourage you to give it a review looking specifically for missing or duplicated punctuation. The page should likely be moved to 1970 Berrechid, Morocco, crash with the extra MOS:GEOCOMMA, and that phrase fixed in a few other places. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 15:21, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

- @Geardona Wouldn't Berrechid crash be simpler and in line with guidance at WP:AT? Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:31, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Most likely, although the current name was implemented by the AFC reviewer so I am not going to overrule them. I might look for consensus to move it to that. Geardona (talk) 15:42, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

- @Geardona: Welcome to the Teahouse, and congratulations on your article being accepted! I tweaked the punctuation and a reference, and added some categories. The article has a {{orphan}} template at the top, which you can resolve by adding links from other articles to 1970 Berrechid, Morocco crash. I see there's a link from Sud Aviation Caravelle#Incidents and accidents to your article, which is a good start. You might want to consider adding information and links from Berrechid and 1970 in aviation#April. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 16:41, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

.epub download on Wikisource rarely works
Four times this month I tried to download an .epub of a book from Wikisource, using the link https://wsexport.wmflabs.org/tool/book.php?lang=pl&format=epub&page= (and book name here; today it was "Moskal"). It worked only once out of four, with most times the connection to the server being lost and this particular service seems to be down almost all of the time ("Wikimedia Cloud Services Error. This web service cannot be reached. Please contact a maintainer of this project"). This is the only service across all of the Wikipedia projects that I encounter constant problems with. Can anything be done about it? Thanks in advance! Amused (talk) 17:31, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, Amused. It may be that something can be done about, but appealing to editors (not maintainers) of Wikipedia (which is a separate project from Wikisource) is unlikely to be fruitful. I suggest you ask at s:WS:H, and somebody there will redirect you as appropriate. ColinFine (talk) 19:19, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the link! I think it's might be a problem with Wikimedia servers in general, but I'll ask there. Cheers! Amused (talk) 19:42, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Samwilson Maybe you could take a look at this (don't know how this ended up on the English Wikipedia teahouse :). @Amused Sam would be the person to ask such a question since he works on wsexport in Wikisource. Business Class and First Class articles
Currently, there's a First class travel and a First class (aviation) article. On the other hand, there's a Business class article. I'm wondering if it might be worth splitting the business class article into Business class and Business class (aviation) as well or if it would be better to merge the first class articles together or even just keep it as it is. I've asked WikiProject Airlines already. Sgubaldo (talk) 17:35, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

English or Albanian title
I am planning on writing an article about an Albanian film with an Albanian title.
In the article name, should I use the Albanian name or its English name (English translation of the name if it doesn’t have an English name of its own)?
In addition, when you’re mentioning such film in another article, should it be mentioned in the og or english title?
Looking forward for answers. grafiXal Talk 18:49, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @GrafiXal: Welcome to the Teahouse. If there is an English title that the film is known by that is used by reliable sources, then yes, that is preferred; otherwise the original Albanian title is used. That applies to any mention of it in other articles. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 19:47, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

hi AJIT30071990 (talk) 18:54, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @AJIT30071990: Welcome to the Teahouse! Are you referring to your Draft:Ajit kumar singh? Based on your user name, I'm presuming you are writing about yourself, which is highly discouraged on Wikipedia (see WP:AUTO). Wikipedia articles are based on multiple independent reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of the subject, which must meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". There are many other ways you can contribute to Wikipedia besides creating an article. Visit Help:Introduction to learn how to edit, and then the Wikipedia:Task center to find where you can help. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 19:44, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
The draft Ajit has very little content - one sentence - and no references. It has been Rejected. You also submitted Draft:ScopeMaster, which was created by someone else. Do not do that, as it is very impolite. David notMD (talk) 20:27, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Can someone add an image for my first wiki page
I was hoping someone could add an image of Erik Hansen to my page on him. There is an image of him in the wiki commons under "Erik Hansen Pro day". - @Footballfan145: Bit of a mystery what's going on with the image. If you took the photo, you do not need to be mailing VRTS, you can just slap whatever licence you choose on it (such as Cc-by-sa-4.0). If you did not take the photo, then whatever email you're sent to VRTS is not enough. - I tagged it on Commons as copyvio before it was undeleted.
- If you took the photo but published it (i.e. posted on social media) before uploading to Commons, you do need to provide evidence of ownership to VRT.

One thing you can do if you’re in doubt is to take a screen shot of the photo you want to use and then upload the screen shot. - Possibly 1860s, assuming it's actually "Kellogg" (spelling), per [7], which is reasonable given the subject and agrees with the typical style of their work. - Maybe. Maybe c.1850. Kellogg was an engraver, not the originator of the illustration. The subject died in 1860 aged 72. The illustration does not look like a 72-year old. Reasonable to infer that the illustration was made earlier in her life. Lowest end of the range seems not unreasonable. --Tagishsimon (talk) 21:41, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

- I'm sorry to say that at the moment, Ahmad does not qualify for a wikipedia article because there are not enough reliable sources which discuss him. Unless you can find better sources, the draft will be deleted. --Tagishsimon (talk) 03:33, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for your answer. All the sources of the article are from international and Iranian sources and reliable news agencies of Iran, which are neutral
- And once approved by Persian Wikipedia with its rules
- Is it possible to review and check again?
- I'm pretty sure that these do not satisfy WP:GNG. English wikipedia's notability standards are not the same as Persian wikipedia. --Tagishsimon (talk) 03:44, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Because other people https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ali_Kaveh have verified their articles with much less and inappropriate sources
- That's why I request to check with these sources which are valid
- And please check it, and if you need basic editing, due to lack of familiarity, it may seem unapproved, but I request Majd to check it and edit it, thank you. 2.177.101.133 (talk) 03:50, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yes. See WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. The argument that another article has been created with insufficient references is not a good argument for this article being created with insufficient references. I'm sorry, but right now, there is not evidence that this subject is notable. If you cannot find additional reliable sources for the subject, the article will not be promoted. --Tagishsimon (talk) 03:56, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Building on that response, if there is a problem with the references in Ali Kaveh, feel free to improve it or nominate it for deletion. GoingBatty (talk) 04:11, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- GoingBatty is correct. Note, though, that Ali Kaveh has the distinction of taking the picture of Ayatollah Khomeini printed on Iranian 10,000 rials note; this is proffered as a reason for him having fame in Iran. Ahmad Bayati is very much younger, and has no such claim. --Tagishsimon (talk) 04:19, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- It is true. Of course, note that Ahmad Bayati is famous and has a Google knowledge panel "Google Knowledge" https://g.co/kgs/SKoR8Y and Wikipedia is Farsi and In taking news photos for important government centers and important Iranian news agencies

- It has been brought and recognized
- This is a proof of his fame in Iran. I think Ahmad Bayati deserves to make such a claim 2.177.101.133 (talk) 23:18, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Well: add Reliable Sources to his article. There is no point arguing about it here. I've had a look at some of the URLs you have posted above. Perhaps https://lilit.ir/163314/ is good, who knows; it won't translate. But most of them are not reliable sources. Providing long lists of mainly rubbish URLs is not helpful. --Tagishsimon (talk) 02:57, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you, I have added all the sources, I am your approval and verification
- Thank you again for your help and explanation 2.177.92.112 (talk) 03:05, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- You added more than 4k of link data to the article. You have not added what could be regarded as references. You have not helped the article, at all. I've followed one of the refs; it gets me to a story "Seetna's video report of Irancell's presence at Elcamp 1402 exhibition". That is not about the subject at all.
- Please understand: loading the article up with rubbish links is not helpful. Adding links which are not references is not helpful. We are still in the position where 1) most of the text in the article has no citations and 2) the article page has fifty or so external links of one sort of another, none of which are references for the text in the article. If you are serious about wanting this draft to be approved, do the following: 1) remove all links which are not 'footnotes' citations. All of them. Gone. 2) Make sure each paragraph in the article has a reliable source linked as the 'footnotes' are currently linked. 3) Red WP:GNG. Make sure the footnotes are reliable sources. Please understand we all only have so much time: if you continue to throw tens of uselss references at us, we will simply delete the draft because it will be clear that it is going nowhere. (And do be advised: I have the strongest doubts that you can come up with enough reliable sources. Not every person gets an article, no matter how much you want one.) --Tagishsimon (talk) 03:24, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- This person is the photographer of these news agencies and photographs the important news of Iran

- That does NOT convey notability. We are looking for reliable sources which describe the subject in detail. --Tagishsimon (talk) 03:49, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- All reliable sources that describe the subject in detail are left and there are no other sources
- Please help review and edit the article 2.177.92.112 (talk) 03:53, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- If there are no other sources, then the article will not be promoted. --Tagishsimon (talk) 03:58, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

Photo of special album packaging considered copyrighted?
I was reading the page for Tool's 10,000 days album and I feel a photo should be added to showcase the packaging design. Would a photo of the packaging unfolded be considered copyrighted since it features the album art or is it fine to add? Powder9157 (talk) 04:52, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Powder9157: Welcome to the Teahouse! If you're using someone else's photograph, you may be infringing on the photographer's copyright. If you're taking a photo with your own camera and uploading it, that would be fine. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 05:01, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- I have to disagree here. No matter who takes the photo, a key concern is the protected nature of the packaging/album-art itself. You would have to make a case that actually seeing it substantially increases readers' understanding. See Wikipedia:Non-free content for the policy and restrictions on use of images of non-public-domain items. DMacks (talk) 05:38, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Powder9157, @DMacks: For an example of an album article showing inside art, see Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band#Back cover, gatefold and cut-outs, in which the photo is sourced to the record company. GoingBatty (talk) 07:18, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

New Article For Creation
Hey! I Research and collected information and create new article can you publish it on Wikipedia? Bhushyaxf (talk) 08:11, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi Bhushyaxf! We'll need some more information in order to help effectively, but I'd suggest you have a look at the guideline on reference requirements before an article can be published. You might also be interested in Help:Your first article. We might be able to provide more specific advice if you tell us more – what is the article about? What sources did you find? Are you personally connected to the topic (a company you work for or an article about a family member, for example)? Tollens (talk) 08:28, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
Updating text about a company - References help
I have a text for wiki written by the author of a book about the same company. The book has plenty of references.
But as this text is actually just a super short version of the book, how can it be referenced? Is a reference to the book (which will be free, by the way) enough? It it a re-write of the history of an already existing page here Iver C. Weilbach & Co. which only includes the old book reference. But when i try to update the text and some new images, it gets rejected due to lack of references. Lund95 (talk) 08:22, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, Lund95. Every piece of information in a Wikipedia article must be verifiable from a published source, and while the rules don't insist that the source must be cited, editors are more and more insisting on that when new information is added.
- If the book has not yet been published, then it may not be cited, and information from it may not be included (unless the information has previously been reliably published, of course).
- Once the book has been published by a reputable publisher, then it may be cited. If it is published in other ways (eg self-published, or by a vanity press), then it cannot be cited as a source. ColinFine (talk) 10:51, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for your suggestions. I have now tried to make the additions to my draft of the page content. Hope it will get approved now. Lund95 (talk) 13:35, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
Regarding deleted drafts
I had submitted an article for review 6 months back and it was rejected. Since, I was disappointed I didnt edit it further for 6 months and now found out it has been deleted. I have requested for the undeletion of that draft. Please let me know how much time does it take in undeletion after the request has been sent.

How to disclose a COI
Hello. I'm new here. I have a problem tham my article was rejected for lack of published articles and conflict of interest. Im writing about a automobile museum (i work there and we want to be on a Wikipedia "map"). And now i need to somehow disclose a COI. Could you help me how to do it? Auto Muziejus (talk) 10:20, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Auto Muziejus Hello and welcome. You will need to make the paid editing disclosure as a museum employee, I will post instructions on your user talk page.
- Note that Wikipedia is not interested in search engine results(I think you mean a Google map?). 331dot (talk) 10:22, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- about map - it was metaphorically :) Auto Muziejus (talk) 10:35, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Nonetheless "we want to be on a Wikipedia "map" means "we want to use Wikipedia for promotion", and that is not permitted. If your museum meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, then there can be an article about it. The article will not belong to or be controlled by your museum, and should be based on what the indepedent sources say about the museum, not on what the museum says or wants to say. ColinFine (talk) 10:54, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- I 100% agree with you. sorry for my miscommunication. "should be based on what the indepedent sources say about the museum" - in english wikipedia, those sources need to be in english? I'm asking that, because we are small country, and there are not so many english written sources. Sorry for my questions, just want to make it right. TomasTheBeard (talk) 11:12, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- No, sources do not need to be in English. 331dot (talk) 11:18, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Unreliable Wikipedia Page
i have found a wikipedia article that i assumed was filled with inaccuracies and blantantly purposeful misinformation, the problem lies with the lack of fact checking for the article (not much was interested in this topic) but i did and i found it's not even the description of the topic but another different topic but the description was used for this article falsely, makes me questioned the credibility of the other presented descriptions. any advice? - It would help to know which article you are referring to. 331dot (talk) 14:02, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- I am guessing this is about Djong (ship), where you removed a large block of text, and have concerns about other parts of the article. Wikipedia recommends editors be Bold in their edits, but if Reverted, start a Discussion on the Talk page of the article. You have been Bold. At this point you can continue to examine other parts of the article, or wait to see if other editors dispute what you have done already. Or go on to other articles that interest you. Draft:Vico, and Vicoletto, of the Zuroli
An administrator rejected this draft in progress for the first time: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Vico,_and_Vicoletto,_of_the_Zuroli, I kindly ask for your honest opinion as I am currently improving it according to Wikipedia conventions , citing all the historical and archival sources relating to the Italian toponym. Thanks in advance for listening. GiovAngri (talk) 15:15, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Draft:Vico, and Vicoletto, of the Zuroli --Tagishsimon (talk) 15:20, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- GiovAngri the declining reviewer was not an admin. My opinion is that you should address the issues that the reviewer raised, including fixing so-called 'citebombs'. Sungodtemple (talk • contribs) 15:34, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Um, I understand then I have to see what the Wikipedia rules say regarding ''citeboombs'', thanks anyway. GiovAngri (talk) 16:29, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- It's not clear to me what the article is about. My best guess is that the "Vico del Zuroli" is a building and the "Vicolo del Zuroli" is another building; but I'm probably wrong. The section "Stories linked to the place" has three unsourced paragraphs, then a paragraph which cites four sources, all together at the end. References should be placed immediately after the statements which they support. Maproom (talk) 20:23, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
Draft
Hey, I have created a draft Swami Avdheshanand Giri Ji Maharaj who is a great Hindu spiritual guru, monk. I have also cited it correctly with all typo correction and good english. Can you guys help me by telling me what can I do better in this article? How to make this article best and tell me all problems please! TheProEditor11 (talk) 15:41, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello and welcome. The best way to get feedback is to submit it for a review, the reviewer will inform you of any problems. 331dot (talk) 15:43, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- @331dot But the article will get declined if any problems persists there in it! So I want to solve all problems before submission as I have worked hard to find citations and create this article!!!! Thanks....
- Also, I am very thankful to @Michael D. Turnbull to tell me all problems and fix it for me.... If you see any more problem, kindly let me know! TheProEditor11 (talk) 16:10, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- "Declined" is not final, it allows for resubmission. 331dot (talk) 16:24, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- "Rejected" would be final, but I highly doubt it would be outright rejected. You have nothing to fear from submitting it, and it is the best way to get feedback. 331dot (talk) 16:26, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Okay! I will submit it..... But can you please look into the article and tell me the negative things in the article?! It will take only few moments for you... TheProEditor11 (talk) 16:28, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- @TheProEditor11 You can fix a few things before or after you submit the draft. The person's full name is very long and I don't know how exactly MOS:SURNAME should be complied with but you should read that guidance. You have a few citation errors which I'll fix in a moment. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:47, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- So sweet of you for taking time to fix it! Actually, thankyou for reminding MOS:SURNAME. Actually the name is - Swami Avdheshanand Giri and Ji Maharaj is respect given to monks and some religious people in Hinduism. So, it means that I have to not write Ji Maharaj. Am I right? TheProEditor11 (talk) 16:01, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- @TheProEditor11 Yes, we leave out honorifics, as the MOS says. I assume that Giri is his surname and is what should mainly be used when referring to him in later uses of his name in the biography. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:34, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yes! you are right but since he is a godly figure for millions, I used full name or just Swami Ji instead of Giri which looks kinda disrespectful! TheProEditor11 (talk) 16:38, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- .... on Wikidata here he is just Avdheshanand Giri, so that is perhaps what you need to use (I'm no expert in these naming conventions!). It is not a matter of disrespect: you could look in the Teahouse archive for the number of times people have complained that we refer to Muhammad in the way we do. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:50, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Old Links?
Hi! On the Lushootseed article, I've noticed that there's a citation link that leads to a page that doesn't exist anymore. I don't know enough about the topic to find a suitable replacement, but I don't want to leave a citation that isn't...actually citing anything. What should I do? (It's the first reference; "Brown, Drew" etc). Toastedpencils (talk) 15:43, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- You should either remove the citation link or use Dead Link template. Thanks, TheProEditor11 (talk) 16:13, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Toastedpencils See WP:LINKROT. Don't remove citations just because they no longer link correctly. See the link for alternative suggestions: there are also bots which go around fixing such problems. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:28, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
Page for Singer Songwriter FRANC O'CHER
Hello, I have read that is illegal to pay an entreprise to write an article on wikipedia and I can't do it myself. is there anyway I can have a Wiki page about my singer-songwrite career. As I already have over 25 articles from blog an magazine ?
Here is some related info: https://www.francocher.com https://www.youtube.com/@francochermusic https://www.instagram.com/francochermusic https://www.tiktok.com/@francochermusic https://www.twitter.com/francochermusic https://www.facebook.com/francochermusic
Thank you for your help Francois Durocher (Franc O'cher) Durochef (talk) 15:56, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, Durochef, and welcome to the Teahouse. It is not "illegal" to pay somebody to write an article about you, but it is very very unwise, because:
- Many of the people and organisations offering that service are scammers.
- If you find an honest one, they will tell you that they cannot guarantee that an article about you will be accepted, or that it will say what you want it to say.
- They must make a formal declaration of their status as a paid editor, including who is paying them.
- They can expect their work to be scrutinised carefully for reliability and independence of the sources they use, and for neutrality of the text
- An article about you must be based almost entirely on such independent, reliably published sources about you: what you or your associates say or want to say about yourself is almost irrelevant. If sufficient sources of that nature do not exist, then there cannot be an article about you. Period.
- If such an article is accepted, it will not belong to you, it will not be controlled by you, it will not necessarily say what you want it to say, and it may not be used for promotion, widely construed. Your involvement in it (and the involvement of your agent, if you employ one) will be limited to making edit requests.
- External links from Wikipedia articles are all tagged "nofollow", so do not contribute to SEO.
- Basically, if you are even considering paying somebody to write an article about you, you are almost certainly under the misapprehension that Wikipedia can be used for promotion, and that an article about you is for your benefit. ColinFine (talk) 17:38, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for these information. I really appreciate.
- My goal wasn't really to be use as promotion but more as a validation. On how google would display my information when the search for "Franc O'cher" is made.
- Guess I will have to wait for a kind soul to create it ! :)
- Thank you for your help.
- Have a great day.
- Franc Durochef (talk) 18:30, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, your goal was to improve your presence on Google. How is that not promotion? ColinFine (talk) 19:40, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
How to add a video...
I would like to add a video to: Transcendental Model 1-G. It's a video of Test Flights of Transcendental Aircraft Corporation's Model 1-G and Model 2 VTOL aircraft. Wcobey (talk) 16:34, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Wcobey If and only if it is a video you personally took, then it could be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and then a link placed to it in the article. However, I assume it is more likely it is a video hosted on YouTube or similar and copyright of the aviation company. In that case, a link to it could be included in the "External links" section of the article. See Concorde for an example. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:58, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Super thanks for your reply.
- I edited the "Transcendental Model 1-G" page.
- Added video: "Transcendental Aircraft Corporation - Model 1G and Model 2.ogg"
- Title: "Video of Test Flights of Transcendental Aircraft Corporation's Model 1-G and Model 2 VTOL aircraft."

- @Wcobey: I think a user objected strongly to the advert at the start of the video, which is reflected in the wording of the commons video page you uploaded: "An eBook is now available: "Pioneering in A New Phase of Aviation Progress, 1952 - 1958" by William E Cobey." You will find that editors on Wikipedia despise wikipedia being used to promote anything, even a 99p ebook. You need to decide why you are here: to build the encyclopedia, or to promote your ebook. --Tagishsimon (talk) 02:43, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Wcobey If you cropped your video to remove any advert, I think that it would be an acceptable addition to the article. Note that you have a clear conflict of interest, so you should read the guidance on that. Mike Turnbull (talk) 18:37, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- There's an outstanding copyright issue on the footage to be addressed: if copyright belongs to Wcobey - e.g. because they've inherited the copyright - then they may need to communicate with the Wikipedia:Volunteer Response Team. It's clearly not 'own work'. --Tagishsimon (talk) 18:49, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for your help. I am here to get out this historical story. Nothing else. It's a piece of American history that needs to be documented and held in this archive, Wikipedia.
- Both the video and the book tell the full story. One really can't go without the other. The advertisement links the two firmly together. Further, it certainly is not going to be a New York Times bestseller. The $1 for the book is for me to keep track of how many books are sold; and for me to amuse myself; and without a doubt, to buy me a beer.
- I spent a considerable amount of time putting it together to share with the Wikipedia audience.
- Yes, I will also share the copyright question with the Response Team.
- I also wonder how to get to Wikipedia's Aviation Project team and whether the page "locked".
- Thanks so much for responses. You made my day. I will stay in touch with you all as I navigate the process. Wcobey (talk) 20:05, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

I'm pretty new, and a lot of places people will say "oh, go to Wikipedia Adventure. You can learn to edit Wikipedia really quickly!" But, I've tried doing it and it just won't work for me. Can someone please help? Link: The Wikipedia Adventure 五颜六色⩥ 19:31, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Error
Hi. Why does the [|list of DW episodes page] have a giant cite error on it? (visible in the series overview) I reverted another page to fix the error then went on there and saw that, I'm assuming it's not a mistake just with this page considering it wasn't like that recently and yet on the page edit history, it shows up a lot now. Someone should fix it anyway I think but I don't know how. ButterCashier (talk) 19:56, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

- The draft is only declined, not rejected. You need to format the references properly and place them in line with the text they are supporting, please see Referencing for Beginners. You have also written the draft in the style of an essay and not an encyclopedia article. Writing a new article is very challenging; it's usually recommended that your first edit existing articles, to get a feel for what is being looked for. 331dot (talk) 22:44, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Change of category when still in draft form
I have submitted an article for a new page, which has so far been rejected. One of the issues is likely to be an incorrect categorization. How do I change the category when still in draft form? The current category is "organisation" but I want to change the category to "band".
I don't think I need to change the content or the citations, but cannot see a way to change the category. Is that function available or do I simply start again? Asianfg (talk) 01:23, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Asianfg: It is not yet a very good article, but the subject very clearly passes WP:GNG. I have removed the uncited Alumni section; improved some of the references & added a couple more; and promoted it as Canberra Youth Orchestra. I'd suggest you continue to work on it, particualrly by looking for news stories which discuss the subject or its work. --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:46, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- To answer your question, you could have changed the draft categorisation in the draft by amending parameters in the template {{Draft topics}}, but that is no longer necessary. --Tagishsimon (talk) 02:05, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

YouTube as a source? WP:NOYT unclear?
Here an editor cites a YouTube video as the source on a BLP's religious beliefs/theism. Is this okay? WP:NOYT seems somewhat ambiguous and I'd rather not remove citation that might be acceptable. Thanks. Zenomonoz (talk) 05:20, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- YouTube is a user-generated website and is therefore highly discouraged from use as a Wikipedia source. Equalwidth (C) 06:48, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, Zenomonoz. Equalwidth is correct that most YouTube videos are not considered to be reliable sources. However, there are significant exceptions. Videos shown on official YouTube channels associated with reliable, established print or academic sources are also reliable and can be used as references in Wikipedia articles. As for WP:NOYT, that is an essay that expresses the opinion of its author, and lacks the force of a policy or a guideline. The relevant policy language can be found at WP:ABOUTSELF. Unable to understand wikipedia
Hi this is the below link of the article that I wrote. I am new to wikipedia and I dont know the rules and terminologies that you use. Please do let me know the real problem with the article. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pavan_Sadineni Aaseeshpreetam6 (talk) 06:57, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- First, you can not expect to leap into wikipedia and write an article. Spend a few weeks or even months just reading Wikipedia and learn how it works. Then you might be bale to write an article. Bduke (talk) 07:48, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- Aaseeshpreetam6 is not a new user. They created their account almost ten years ago, but their oldest survivng edit is from yesterday. Maproom (talk) 08:42, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- The real problem atm seems to be that someone who saw the article thought "This isn't good enough per WP:N!" There is now a discussion that is intended to solve that problem. There may be other problems involving WP:RS and WP:BLP, but the "should this article be deleted" is the main one atm. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:43, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
STATUS: There exists Draft:Pavan Sadineni which was repeatedly Declined, and also Pavan Sadineni, created and then nominated for deletion. The two documents are not identical. I recomment abandoning the draft - which should be deleted - and working on improving the article. David notMD (talk) 09:20, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- The process at AfD is that editors have a week or so to recommend Keep or Delete, and then an Administrator makes a decision. Consider looking at the draft to see why the Reviewers were Declining the draft, as that may give direction for improving the article while waiting for the AfD decision. David notMD (talk) 09:33, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
Rejection due to "not enough references"
I submitted an article about a scientific prize and gave the reference of the organisation website that hands out the prize. The prize has been awarded since 2009, the organisation is well-established in European science. What else is needed? Incidentally, the German Wikipedia accepted my article, which is short and factual, without any problems. What kind of reference do the watch-dogs of Wikipedia request? I will now try a second time, adding unnecessary info (in my views) about the awardees, although the article is not about them primarily. Pünkelchen (talk) 11:09, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- It's usually best to at least tell people the name of the article when asking for help. I presume you mean Draft:Ita Askonas Award? - X201 (talk) 11:22, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Pünkelchen: you need to support the article with sufficient citations, so that it is clear where the information is coming from, and you also need to cite sources which establish notability, usually according to the WP:GNG guideline.
- Whether the German-language Wikipedia accepted an article on this subject is neither here nor there, as each language version is entirely separate with their own guidelines and policies. This (English-language) one probably has the most onerous requirements, so it's not at all uncommon that articles get accepted into other language versions and yet not accepted here. HTH, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 11:48, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Pünkelchen To establish notability on the English Wikipedia we need about three sources that meet these criteria. At present, all your sources are either from organisations associated with the prize or from websites of people who have won it. These are therefore not independent. The most likely place to find acceptable sources will be from newspapers reporting on the Award. It is clearly OK to include some background from non-independent sources (see WP:ABOUTSELF) but these don't help the notability issue. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:11, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Pünkelchen (edit conflict) I'm afraid it's about not the number of references, but the type of references needed to establish whether or not a topic meets English Wikipedia's strict Notability criteria. Has the award been written about in detail and depth by general news or magazine outlets, rather than within the immunology profession alone? I don't see that in the citations you have used. Nor do I see any mention of this award in either the existing articles about Brigitte Askonas, or in European Journal of Immunology. These are both low-hanging fruit wherein the award can easily be mentioned. It would even be possible to create a WP:REDIRECT from Ita Askonas Award to either the European Journal of Immunology as a whole, or to a subsection within it specifically about that award. I suggest you may find this a more rewarding route to follow than flogging yourself to create a separate article. Later on, when there's sufficient detailed coverage of this particular award (and remember, there are innumerable learned societies and other bodies who run award schemes every year) you could suggest making a more detailed, stand-alone article specifically about it. Hope you find this helpful. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 14:25, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
Title of Page
Hi there, I edited a page which is now called "Islamist uprising in Syria" roughly 1-2 years ago. I visit it every now and then, however, I have noticed that the title has been changed and i strongly oppose the change. Although I agree with the change from "Islamic" to "Islamist" so as to not confuse it with something related to the religion and to make it more academic in language, however, it is very important to retain part of the old title which is "1976-1982" since Syria has a history of various islamist uprisings which should not be confused with each other. In fact, this is why the page itself begins with "not to be confused with the syrian civil war". I think it is a very important addition that should remain part of the title. I could not change it myself via the edit function, so i am writing this to ask for help on how to change it and perhaps to know why it was changed.
Thank you! KAD2223 (talk) 14:45, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- @KAD2223 The titles of articles are not altered by edits but by WP:MOVEs. The Talk Page of the article is the place to gain consensus for any further move and is also where you should find the discussion that led to the current title. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:18, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

- @Yodamaster1 Writing articles from scratch as the first thing you try on Wikipedia is hard! Reviewers are looking for drafts that fully meet our standards including correct referencing. There are help articles here. To take just one example, your best source is probably doi:10.1007/978-3-319-72610-6_12 but its citation should look like this: Adams, Gill; Povey, Hilary (2018). Delete user pages
Hi, I was wondering, "How do I delete my common.css file?" ThatJoshuaPerson (talk) 17:45, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, @ThatJoshuaPerson, and welcome to the Teahouse! You can place {{db-u1}} on any user page to request it be deleted. -- Maddy from Celeste (WAVEDASH) 18:14, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- Alternatively, take a look at WP:Common.js and common.css for help. I guess you could just blank the page and in effect you would have no active software. Mike Turnbull (talk) 18:24, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Maddy from Celeste: You can, but it won't work on a css page. Template content is not transcluded into .css pages, as far as I can see. I don't think there is a protocol for their deletion - blanking is normally good enough - but I guess Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion? --Tagishsimon (talk) 18:31, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Tagishsimon and Maddy from Celeste: Based on a check in preview, they do work, at least to some extent. When used on a css page, templates will not display as usual, hoewever, they do still trigger categorisation like Category:Candidates for speedy deletion by user and substing them works too (that's why you can do something like
{{subst:lusc|User:Example/script.js}}
). Victor Schmidt (talk) 20:17, 24 November 2023 (UTC)- Yes, when you save a js or css page, the content is processed like wikitext including transclusion of templates. The result is not rendered on the page itself but it's still used to update other things like categories and WhatLinksHere. For example, Special:WhatLinksHere/User:PrimeHunter/Source links.js lists User:PrimeHunter/vector.js because that page contains
importScript('User:PrimeHunter/Source links.js'); // Linkback: [[User:PrimeHunter/Source links.js]]
. The wikilink would be invalid JavaScript so it's commented out with JavaScript's comment syntax//
but not with wikitext's comment syntax<!-- ... -->
. This system helps find users of a script if they installed the script with the linkback code. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:14, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

- So, it sounds like the general consensus is that blanking the CSS page works? I've already done that, so I guess I'm fine. ThatJoshuaPerson (talk) 19:27, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
Questions about how to create a new page. I think I am a registered user.
I have a registered user account, and I can prove that I have donated to the Foundation in the past. I am now ready to learn how to create some Wikipedia pages, and I have particular topics in mind. One concerns a documentary or movie project that I have made a lot of progress on, and the other is a page about a particular person whom I just recently met in Austria. I am certain that there will be many complaints and privacy rights violations in both instances, so it is not a simple question. Too many really, so I will start with just a few.
- Instruction manual on how to create and maintain Wikipedia pages.
- The documentary and/or film project is real. I have probably thousands of photos, and a lot of written material, much of which is on social media platforms, and I personally have already started production. However, the legal implications could be enormous.
- Ditto for the personal page.
- Also, I'd like to add some footnotes about Blue Wizards to the LOTR WIKI on the ONE WIKI TO RULE THEM ALL.
Are you able to help or give advice ?
My name is Stephen Douglas Scotti. I have no problem sharing some details about my identity, but I am sure some of the other people involved will object. Sdscotti (talk) 17:52, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- The subjects of wikipedia pages need to be notable - WP:N and you must be able to cite Reliable Sources - WP:RS to evidence that notability. I doubt that your project is notable. Your fourth point does not make much sense, but at the same time sets alarm bells ringing. WP is not the "LOTR WIKI", so who knows. See also WP:YFA and WP:COI. I suggest you need to get a lot more familiar with WP before embarking on the addition of pages. But please start with the reading I've indicated. --Tagishsimon (talk) 18:10, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- Hello, Sdscotti. Please read and study Your first article carefully. Your account is too inexperienced to create new articles now. You should spend some time improving existing articles, and learning about Wikipedia's Policies and guidelines. Nobody on Wikipedia cares at all whether or not you have donated money to the Wikimedia Foundation. The most important thing to know to start is that acceptable Wikipedia articles summarize significant coverage of the topic in reliable published sources that are entirely independent of the topic. So, have the documentary/film project and the person from Austria received such coverage? We cannot provide advice about editing other wikis. Cullen328 (talk) 18:33, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

you can only contribute content whichis already free in the public domaincan be freely licensed per copyright violations. You must also adhere to the Biographies of living persons policy. Failure to do so will undoubtedly result in you being blocked, so it is best you avoid any contentious topics. Polyamorph (talk) 20:03, 24 November 2023 (UTC)- Polyamorph, it is not correct that Wikipedia content must be in the public domain, and relatively little of it is. For the most part, Wikipedia content, whether text or images, is freely licensed, for example under a Creative Commons license such as the CC BY-SA 4.0 License. The freely licensed content remains under copyright, but we agree to make that content widely available with attribution being the only acceptable restriction. - Yeh, that's what I meant, but trying to explain in a non-technical way. Polyamorph (talk) 23:28, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- Also read WP:TOOSOON. Movie projects, documentary or not, rarely qualify for an article. Typically, movies are released, reviewed, and reviews can count as valid references. Social media does not count. As for a person you met, the advice above applies. No refs = no hope of being an article. David notMD (talk) 22:51, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

Sub heading problem
In this article, under "Highest one day individual scorers" section, there are two tables for 'Men' and 'Woman', but their sub headings are stuck on top, even if in source code their are properly placed. If I fix it in visual editor, it just makes two 'Women' subheading appear on top, thus aggravating the error. Kindly fix it. ExclusiveEditor Notify Me! 19:34, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- The first table didn't have the correct closing bracket. It had "|-}" instead of "|}". I have fixed it. StarryGrandma (talk) 19:44, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

Does a person who is a deputy of the State Council of the Republic of Tatarstan have significance for Wikipedia, considering that this parliament is the highest legislature in the state as part of the federation? 178.204.152.206 (talk) 20:06, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- Per WP:NPOL, "The following are presumed to be notable:
- Politicians and judges who have held international, national, or (for countries with federal or similar systems of government) state/province–wide office". So, yes, they are likely notable. Sincerely, Novo Tape (She/Her)My Talk Page 20:28, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

What should I do?
I'm perplexed. This article lacks reliable sources (Angelo Innocent Fernandes). I discovered no citations in Google Scholar. Additionally, this article exists in three other languages. Using a translator, I examined the references on each of the pages and found nothing substantial. The common reference is this page (https://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/bishop/bfernai.html). What should I do? LeónGonsalvesofGoa (talk) 21:57, 24 November 2023 (UTC)

Shortened References in Visual Editor?
Hi there! I'm working on beefing up an article and I'd like to cite different pages in the same source in multiple places in the article. I tried the "re-use" function in the citation menu in the visual editor, but I can't change the page numbers on one citation without them changing on all the others. Furthermore, I don't want to clog up the references with a lot of full-length footnotes when a shortened note with a different page number would do. Is this doable in the Visual editor currently, or should I dip my toe into source editing to get this done? TIA for the advice! Violetstork (talk) 00:35, 25 November 2023 (UTC)
- To add a bit more detail, I'm looking at the article for Qawwali, which only has a References section (no separate section for footnotes.) I want to stay consistent with what's already in the article, but I also don't want to make a bunch of repeated references at the bottom! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!! Johnnie Bob's false edits
Johnnie Bob has been vandalizing certain political articles such as "Congressional Progressive Caucus". I would like to let him know that as a REAL CHRISTIAN I am dedicated to spreading the truth and destroying marxism and communism.
