The following is a summary of all references to other Pixar films that the Pixar filmmakers incorporate into their movies:

History

Every Pixar film has included cameo appearances of characters or objects from Pixar's other movies or short films.

Since A Bug's Life, Pixar has created extra content for each of their films that is not part of the main story. For their early theatrical releases, this content was in the form of "movie outtakes" and appeared as part of the movie's credits. For each of their films since Monsters, Inc. (Finding Nemo excluded), this content was a short made exclusively for the DVD release of the film.[1]

Traditions

Dinoco

Dinoco is a fictional oil company that first appeared in Toy Story as a small gas station and later had more prominent visibility in Cars.[2]The company's logo is a dinosaur (a reference to Sinclair Oil, which uses a very similar dinosaur logo). In Cars, the company's signature color is a pale blue shade referred to as "Dinoco blue" that was originally created for Richard Petty's racecar à la Gulf Oil.[3] Dinoco is a sponsor of the Piston cup, and is the main sponsor of The King, a veteran racer on the verge of retirement. The company's lavish sponsorship is highly sought after by the main character Lightning McQueen and rival Chick Hicks. The Dinoco brand has also been featured in much Cars-related merchandise.[4]

Pizza Planet

Pizza Planet is a fictional pizza restaurant that appears in Toy Story.[2] In the film, it is a large, sci-fi-themed restaurant with arcade games. The company runs a fleet of overused Toyota Hilux pickup trucks, as seen in Toy Story 1 and 2 (though in Toy Story 2, the truck model is called a "Gyoza"). There is a Pizza Planet reference in every Pixar film to date.[5]

  • In A Bug's Life, the truck appears in the scene where one insect warns another not to touch the motor home's bug zapper.
  • In Monsters, Inc., when the redneck Mama is beating Randall with a shovel, it is on the far left side of the screen. This is the same motor home that appears in A Bug's Life. [6][7]
  • In Finding Nemo, while Gill is explaining his plan to escape from the office, a yellow Pizza Planet truck drives by.[8]
  • In The Incredibles, the truck is briefly seen on the road while the family is driving on the highway to fight the Omnidroid.[9]
  • In Cars, there is a Pizza Planet truck at the stadium for the final race.[10]
  • In Ratatouille, the truck is briefly seen crossing the bridge over the Seine when Skinner is chasing Remy.[11]
  • In WALL-E, EVE scans the engine of a Pizza Planet truck for life forms shortly after her arrival on Earth, and shuts the bonnet afterwards.[9]

Pizza Planet restaurants at Walt Disney World's Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disneyland Paris are named after the site in the film and are designed to resemble it.[12]

The Luxo Ball

The yellow ball with a blue stripe and a red star, which was first shown in the short Luxo Jr., has been shown in several Pixar feature films and shorts:

Additionally, the ball's texture appeared on the floor of the circus ring in Red's Dream[citation needed].

A113

A113 is an Easter egg that has been inserted into several animated television shows and feature films as a homage to a classroom at CalArts, the alma mater of Pixar/Disney executive John Lasseter and director Brad Bird, among others. Bird was the first to use the A113 Easter egg, in a 1987 episode of the television series Amazing Stories. Though not unique to Pixar, A113 has appeared in every Pixar feature film to date:

John Ratzenberger

Every Pixar feature film features a character voiced by John Ratzenberger, who has been called "Pixar's good luck charm" since he has played a role in each Pixar feature.[18] Ratzenberger has become such an important part of Pixar, that he even plays on the company softball team.
