Hey, Tony, what do you think...
...about this new article on Washburn Elementary School? I know that most elementary schools do not warrant Wikipedia articles. However, I didn't know if you were familiar with this particular school or if it had any special significance to the Puerto Rican educational system. I hope you are doing well today! :) Ecoleetage (talk) 14:30, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
- Hey, again! I wanted to bring the article to your attention, in order to see if you had access to any sources that could preserve it from being deleted. I would imagine there is a good history behind the school. Good to hear from you, too! :) Ecoleetage (talk) 18:05, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
thanks!
well, been busy but I always go around... wikipedia is like that ;). Thanks!--Cerejota (talk) 23:02, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Latino again
Hi Tony. Edgar is again out of control over there and has just broken 3rr and inserted irrational accusations of "censure" and 'anti-Latino' (the usual) into the article. That's bad enough on the talk page as it is. Anyway, I'm posting this in case you're here right now to ask you to please intervene. If you're not, I'm just going to file a 3rr report on Edgar. Gracias. SamEV (talk) 01:12, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
"do what you think is right"
That would be undoing the latest nonsense (sorry, but there's no other name) he inflicted on that article. But I'll wait till evening, since I don't want to fall afoul of 3RR myself. Thanks. SamEV (talk) 15:57, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
Afro-Puerto Rican
Just following up on the Afro-Puerto Rican edit. Essentially, in Puerto Rico one would not say "afro-puertorriqueño" because it when you are on the island, it is assumed that you are boricua (aside from those who may think you are dominican). In Puerto Rico one just says, "soy negro" when a description is given. However, because this is an encyclopedia and we are in the United States, we are describing things, (1) that are not here, and (2)in English. Which is exactly the reason why Afro-Puerto Rican exists in English as an anthropological term. The term was not created as a divide-and-conquer tactic. It is merely a descriptive term used properly in the context of this category. That is to say, I well understand social backgrounds of discrimination and the nuyorican experience, but I don't think it is relevant to the deletion of an accurate, historical term used to describe a group in PR that seldom gets any credit. Es decir, no tiene que existir un termino antropologico, (sumamente correcto) en espanol para que exista en ingles. Asi es con muchas cosas en los idiomas. A google search reveals an amount of "Afro-Puerto Rican" on a scale that is staggering. The current name is very vague and arguably includes a majority of all Puerto Ricans. Ah, en cuanto al dicho de dinga, hay otro: "el que no tiene de congo, tiene de carabali." Saludos, --Noopinonada (talk) 15:18, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

I also merged the articles the best I can. Please, when you get time go & review them, and if is necesary do any needed edit.

Hello, thats interesting, I've only been lucky enough to attend one Yankee game in my life despite going to New York once a year since I was young, those Yankee tickets can be really hard to get. Re:Chinese immigration to Puerto Rico & note from IP on Charlie Company, 1/7 (1967)
Hi Tony,
I really enjoyed reading Chinese immigration to Puerto Rico. I learned a lot from reading it; and, I liked the way it was written.
Would you take a look at my talk page? The note above yours about Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines (1967) — asking about badges and awards? I left a suggestion. If you could help out in any way, I'm sure that it would be appreciated.

GA nomination
For Jewish immigration to Puerto Rico. It deserves the status and it deserves FA too, but one step at a time ;). Thanks! --Cerejota (talk) 13:42, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
I think it needs work; I don't know of any other list of people where it's just a list of vignettes separated by horizontal rules. A lot of the space is taken up with their curriculum vitae and resumes; we don't need to know, for example, that "Dr. Solís earned his surgeons degree from the university of Puerto Rico's School of Medicine. He then continued his surgical training at the Shands Hospital of the University of Florida" All we need to know is the basics: Who he is, and why he's on this list. Where he got his degree doesn't matter, unless that in itself was notable. If he had his own article, then that would be fine there, but this article, IMO, needs to be specific on what it includes. IMO, if they aren't notable/sourced enough for their own article, that's not license to include more content here than the ones WITH articles. --Golbez (talk) 05:44, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
Your request
Hi, I will try to go over Puerto Rican scientists and inventors as soon as I feel up to it again. I am very discouraged right now, but probably I will get over it. I have looked at the criteria for lists, and I see that there is a lot to consider. I am assuming that you know the basic list format etc. Is that true? Or should I be looking for specific list issues, and not just general MoS type things? Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 21:30, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
Work!
Lets begin this week by sorting out which articles to work on, that should allow us to work faster on them during this hasty period. I suggested the two shortest before, now we could add Sixto Escobar to that category as well, do you have any preferences? - Caribbean~H.Q. 22:39, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
- Sixto Escobar it is. I will work both that list and the the one covering the world champions in December, but I need some free time to do it and work with the PRs and FLCs. - Caribbean~H.Q. 02:19, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
New entries on List of Puerto Ricans
Hi, I did not add sources for Lourdes Pérez, Sylvia Rivera, Anthony Romero and Lawrence La Fountain-Stokes because all four of them have entries in Wikipedia, most of them with sources. Should I still go ahead and add a reliable verifiable source to their listings on the List of Puerto Ricans? Thanks.--Mgdelarosa (talk) 19:17, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Hi there! Long time no see! I'm curious about something. I've been looking at the Senate of Puerto Rico page and the table of the results of the 2008 election. Is the table accurate? It shows the PNP winning all 16 district seats - despite barely outpolling the PPD (by a margin of 47.4% to 47.1%). I know that first-past-the-post elections do produce electoral distortions (my own country used that system before 1996), but I can't quite understand how 47.4% of the vote can translate into 100% of the seats. Is there an explanation?
I hope you and your family are well. Blessings to you. David Cannon (talk) 23:02, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
The NPP obtained a "copo" in the Senate; that is, it swept all positions, winning both seats in each of the eight senatorial districts, as well as electing its six at-large candidates. The PDP managed to elect five of its six at-large candidates (there are 11 at-large elective seats). Since the NPP elected 22 senators and the PDP minority only 5, the PR Constitution's minority representation rules are activated. The Constitution guarantees the minority a minimum of 9 seats. Having elected only 5, the PDP is entitled to four add-on seats, who will then be considered at-large senators. They will be Sen. Juan Eugenio Hernández Mayoral, the losing at-large candidate, Sen. José Luis Dalmau and the two candidates from the Guayama district. These last 3 were the district candidates that lost by the smallest margins. Sen. Dalmau was recently reelected Senate Minority Leader for the new term.
A few significant analitical points:
-Sen. Dalmau is serving his third term as PDP Floor Leader, quite an accomplishment.
-Outgoing Sen. President McClintock transformed a small 9-member minority into a very comfortable 17-member majority and, now, the constitutional maximum of 22.

Hi, Sir! May I please ask if you will still be willing to consider re-opening the appeal at the opportune time amid the intense Wiki and off-wiki personal battle (legal) between me, User:TheCoffee, User:Cma and Max? I admit that I had filed off-Wiki administrative school confidential case (verbal and still undergoing probe) against these 3 above, with reservation to file the Articles 19, 20 & 21, inter alia, of the our New Civil Code lawsuits for damages in our Courts. I thank all of you who have had faith in me amid all these bickering. My emails is judgefloro@yahoo.com I state that I never used any sockpuppet or alter amid accusations. Puerto Rico Senate (cont'd)
Hello again! Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I've been reading your son's article about you. You've certainly had a very varied life with lots of interesting adventures. No doubt that is partly why your writing is so interesting to read - you've had first-hand experience of many of, and therefore a feel for, the things you write about. Seeing you with political leaders - both Puerto Rican and American, including President Clinton - wow! What an honour!
Thank you for sharing what your friend told me about the Puerto Rican election. Thanks for that - I think I understand most aspects of it much better now. There's still one detail, though, that I can't quite understand : according to the table in the article, the PNP got 47.4% of the popular vote and all 16 districts; the PPD got 47.1% of the popular vote and no districts. That's what I don't quite understand : the popular vote was extremely close - the difference between the parties was a tiny 0.3% of the popular vote, but it produced a landslide - 100% of the districts! I'm just trying to figure out how that can be mathematically possible. That's why I asked whether you knew if the table was accurate or not.
By the way, you many have heard that we had an election of our own on 8 November, and John Key was elected Prime Minister.
Once again, thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions! Have a wonderful time with your family. David Cannon (talk) 09:27, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- The NPP won by a roughly 53 to 42 margin, with the new Puerto Ricans for Puerto Rico Party (PPR) and PIP divying up the difference. These last two parties did not reach the minimum threshhold to remain as registered parties and will have to collect about 100,000 signatures each to re-register. The NPP's victory margin was the largest in 44 years, since the PDP's last landslide victory in 1964. Pr4ever (talk) 13:13, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
Puerto Rican Irish
Tony, thanks for your 'comunicado'. I will check your article Puerto Rican Irish tomorrow. I just came from running 8 laps; I am training for a marathon in February. tu hermano, Pedro =)
Sorry for the delayed reply, hope you enjoyed this week as well. I would say that the article is ready to pass with a good copyedit. Between Monday and Tuesday, I navigated trough the web to look for something new. Oddly enough, outside of Fonseca's book, we seem to have the most complete biography out there, in fact, most of them are depressingly short. This seems interesting, but I'm not sure how we can integrate it just yet. - Caribbean~H.Q. 00:03, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
- Its quite solid, I also noticed that its Jewish and Chinese counterparts got DYKs as well. If this tendency continues, we may end up producing over a dozen good articles during the winter. - Caribbean~H.Q. 00:43, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the "Tony magic", I will get to the museum thing shortly and will nominate in a few hours, cheers. - Caribbean~H.Q. 22:49, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
- Well, the book says that "el lugar donde paso sus ultimos años..." was converted into a museum, it doesn't specify... - Caribbean~H.Q. 01:05, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
- We're on, cheers. - Caribbean~H.Q. 03:46, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

- Yeah this is incredibly well-sourced material. While content in wikipedia is open and is owned by no one, the research itself is Tony's. If you need to turn it to a book, email me, we can work something out to get you a good editor and some expert knowledge. Your thesis behind it is WP:SYNTH in wikipedia, but would make a great book otherwise. I myself are half-gringo, and have Welsh, English, Scots-Irish blood, besides the whole native-spanish-african thing, and my great grandfather was spanish from spain, not just from the 16th century! Thanks! --Cerejota (talk) 04:01, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
- Surprise, surprise!, it is unbelievable, but the article did not make "DYK" because of some "unwritten" rules. See for yourselves: Irish immigration to Puerto Rico entry. Tony the Marine (talk) 03:10, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Did You Know problem
Hello! Your submission of Irish immigration to Puerto Rico at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed. There still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Art LaPella (talk) 01:46, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, Tony! I've had my own run-in with the "unwritten rules" (I bluntly stated that I only recognised Wikipedia policy). That said, I did a character count and the article did come up a bit short of the 5x expansion. Of course, expanding an already lengthy article to one that is even larger is a task, and the work you did was extraordinary. In all seriousness, you should consider compiling this information into a book -- the information you are bringing the project is peerless. Keep the great articles coming -- I should be paying you tuition, considering what I've learned from your input! Ecoleetage (talk) 11:42, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry about the outcome of your DYK nomination; that rule can be frustrating, especially when you've taken a couple thousand characters of poorly written text and spent days changing it to a couple thousand characters of excellent text; unfortunately, however, there aren't enough volunteers or enough time at DYK to qualitatively evaluate the status of the article before its expansion began and thus we can only rely on the quantitative length of the article. It's a shame that we can't feature an article like this, but if everyone demanded that we perform a full evaluation of the quality of their articles before and after expansion we would never get through the large backlog of nominations we already have. Anyway, from what I can tell, the work you have done on this article is quite good and it seems like an excellent candidate for GA status, although I'm sure you already know all about that. Best, —Politizer talk/contribs 22:21, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
Added reference
Thanks for pointing out that I had not yet inserted a reference to Victor Argo's biography, which you will see, I now have done. I hope others will expand Victor's biography. He was a lovely man, a terrific actor, and with a great sense humor. I may also eventually add a photo or two of his work back in the 1970's - work that I fondly remember. Weimar03 (talk)
This was on Main Page
This was on the DYK one cycle back:
- ... that John F. Kelly's 2003 promotion to brigadier general while in Iraq was the first promotion of a U.S. Marine Corps colonel in a combat zone since Chesty Puller's 1951 Korean War promotion?
Fun fact, yes?
— ERcheck (talk) 02:01, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
References
Hope the ref pieces helped. I didn't do the blogs and forum posts, as the didn't seem WP:RS, but rather something you might be using to find background info that you would find confirmed by RS. I've developed a "standardized" naming convention for my refs, which makes it easier to traceback later, and hopefully for other editors to pick up and use as well — Publication_AuthorLastName_yyyymmdd. I included date info, as it is often the case that items come from same paper/author on different dates. For books -- LastNameYYYY_p## or LastnameYYYY_pp##-##.
Thanks for the note you sent. Very poignant. — ERcheck (talk) 11:56, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Hi
Concerning Image:PR African Poster.JPG and Image:PR Chinese Poster4.jpg, while you have created the two collages I'm sure you haven't also created or hold copyright to the nine pictures used to create them, right? You can't release it under the GFDL/CC then I'm afraid, if it's derived from a copyrighted work.
Amalthea 02:17, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
- I released the posters which I created and which I own under GFDL/CC for their use in Wikipedia and thereby take full responsibilty of their content. Tony the Marine (talk) 03:18, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I'm afraid it's not that easy. I just checked the six pictures that make up Image:PR African Poster.JPG, and while five of them are in the public domain, Image:DeVillard.jpg is only allowed on Wikipedia under a claim of Fair Use, which makes the collage speedily deleteable as a WP:CSD#I9 "blatant copyright violation".
I'm actually unsure to what extent a derivate may be created of a Fair Use image. Since there is already a fair use rationale at Image:DeVillard.jpg for the page where the collage is used, it shouldn't be a problem to use it similar to what's done at Template:African American ethnicity. I'd actually prefer that, since the infobox could then contain links to the people from the image. However, if you prefer to have them all in one image, I could try to find out about derivates of Fair Use images. In any case, either the licensing information on Image:PR African Poster.JPG has to be changed or the image needs to be deleted I'm afraid.
Cheers, Amalthea 03:39, 8 December 2008 (UTC)- I like the how the African-American template looks, not a bad idea at all. Tell you what, I'll fix them later or tomorrow, even it means deleting the posters. Tony the Marine (talk) 03:55, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
- OK great. I recommend creating cropped versions of the images you're going to use so that they all have the same aspect ratio, the ones in Template:African American ethnicity are all somewhat different which looks a bit cheap. Cheers, Amalthea 04:01, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
- I like the how the African-American template looks, not a bad idea at all. Tell you what, I'll fix them later or tomorrow, even it means deleting the posters. Tony the Marine (talk) 03:55, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
- Concerning the other one, the mugshot of Kelis Rogers-Jones seems OK, AFAIK they are in the public domain. The one from Kirk Acevedo though is available e.g. here though, which again makes it an I9 candidate for deletion if you can't provide some evidence that you actually own copyright to that picture. --Amalthea 03:49, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
- Do me a favor and upload the Kelis Rogers Douglas mugshot image for me, since I don't want to mess up the PD Lic. Tony the Marine (talk) 04:48, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm, I'm afraid that I can't after all. I was under the impression that all pictures taken by US government employees on duty were public domain, but noticed that there's a deletion discussion going on for the Paris Hilton mugshot doubting that, so I started digging a little deeper. I contacted http://www.miamidade.gov/corrections/ and asked them about the copyright status of their booking images, and was told that copyright does belong to Miami-Dade County, and that they can't give permission to use the image. Sorry. :| --Amalthea 14:26, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
