Maria Lourdes Egger Dela Cruz-Casareo, better known by her screen name Angelika Dela Cruz (born October 29, 1981), is a Filipina actress and singer of Italian-Austrian-Filipino descent. She started her career in 1995, and has since appeared in television shows and movies, mostly with GMA-7, as well as recorded several of albums. She is currently star and contract artist of GMA Network since she decided to transfer and leave her mother station ABS-CBN Network last 2007.

Personal life

Angelika Dela Cruz was born of a Filipino father and an Italian-Austrian mother. She is 5 feet and 1.5 inches tall and has dark brown hair and eyes. She has a younger sister, Mika, who is now a child star, and two brothers, Edward and Erick, the former being the lead singer for the boy band "Freshmen". She currently resides in Malabon, Metro Manila. She used to be the girlfriend of fellow actors Jericho Rosales and Victor Neri. Angelika is also the owner of Starz Bar and restaurant.

October 12, 2008 in an episode of Showbiz Central, Angelika revealed on national television that she is already married to her non-showbiz boyfriend Orion Casareo since August 2008 and is expecting a child.[1]

On March 20, 2009 at 10:06 in the morning, Angelika gave birth to Gabriel "Gabby" Casareo via caesarian operation at UERM Hospital. [2]

Film career

Early success

Angelika de la Cruz started her career in 1995 as a struggling singer. She went on to perform in different singing contests and eventually auditioned to sing the theme song of the canned cartoon series Sailor Moon. With the help of her father, who had knack for performing, she made it. That became her ticket to show business.

At 15, de la Cruz landed a role in the sexy flick Nights of Serafina, where she played the sister of one of the leads. Her performance in the said movie gained her a Best New Actress Award from the Metro Manila Film Festival. Her success in acting was spotted by ABS-CBN who cast her in their top-rated soap opera Mara Clara alongside Judy Ann Santos. After her stint in Mara Clara, the station gave her a more challenging role in Esperanza, which also starred Judy Ann Santos.

In the series, she was paired with Jericho Rosales, who became her on and off screen lover. Their love team was accepted by the viewers as reason why ABS-CBN made them a regular in the teen horror series Oka Tokat and cast them as one of the leads in the horror movie Magandang Hatinggabi.

Dela Cruz, whose main passion is singing, made two albums under BMG Records and one album under Imperial Records, which succeeded in selling her album in Japan. She also made several movies from different movie outfits and was featured in different commercials. [3]

Moving to GMA Network

After being with ABS-CBN for quite some time, dela Cruz decided to transfer to GMA Network. She was able to show her craft in acting when starred in different telesine and mini-series such as Liwanag sa Hatinggabi and Umulan Man O Umaraw. She was also part of the TV show Pintados and had a supporting role in the soap opera entitled Di Ba't Ikaw.

Her career soared when she was given the lead role in the primetime series Ikaw Lang Ang Mamahalin, which did well in the ratings game. She was tagged as GMA’s Drama Princess because of the her performance in the said series. She was also part of the youth-oriented show Click, but due to rising stardom, she was pulled out from the show to concentrate on her other projects.

Following the success of her first primetime series, Dela Cruz was cast to star in the Habang Kapiling Ka along with then-boyfriend Victor Neri. Her performance in the series gave her a Best Actress nomination in Star Awards for Television but she lost it to fellow co-star Snooky Serna.

Dela Cruz was able to show her singing, dancing and hosting talent when she became a regular in the Sunday variety show SOP. [4]

Back to ABS-CBN

After her contract with GMA 7 expired, Dela Cruz moved back to her first home studio ABS-CBN. Many writers and critics questioned her decision in switching channels but she simply answered them by saying that it was a career move. Her comeback project as a Kapamilya was the primetime series Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas which starred Kristine Hermosa and her ex-flame Jericho Rosales.

The show became a success after her role and Diether Ocampo's role added twist in the story. It was very popular in Malaysia. After the success of Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas, Dela Cruz refrained from drama and concentrated in hosting. She did hosting jobs in the showbiz-oriented talk show Entertainment Konek, Morning Star, 2004 Himig Handog Love Songs and ASAP Mania which is the rival show of SOP. Following these, she was cast as one of the leads in the series Ikaw Ang Lahat Sa Akin, where she was able to work with other Star Magic's brightest talent such as Diether Ocampo, John Lloyd Cruz, Bea Alonzo and Claudine Barretto.

Dela Cruz' career took a different direction when she accepted the role of Lavinia Arguelles, the main antagonist in the television remake of the movie Bituing Walang Ningning where she starred along with Sarah Geronimo. She was able to show not just her skills in acting but also in singng. She was praised for her performance in the series and gave her a Best Actress nomination at the 2007 Star Awards for Television. [5]

After the success of Bituing Walang Ningning and her effectiveness in playing anti-heroine characters, Dela Cruz was cast in villainous roles. She starred in the fantasy series Pedro Penduko at ang mga Engkantao where she played the role of Kalagua, the ultimate evil and the afternoon series Prinsesa ng Banyera as the ambitious twin sister of Kristine Hermosa. [6]

Back to GMA

In 2008, Dela Cruz transferred back to GMA Network after finishing the first season of Prinsesa ng Banyera. Her loyalty was questioned because of switching channels; however, she managed to address the issue by saying that her loyalty is in the network she works with and that she just wanted to work. [7]. She made a comeback via Babangon Ako't Dudurugin Kita which featured the loveteam of JC de Vera and Yasmien Kurdi with longtime friend Marvin Agustin. It was followed by the afternoon drama Una Kang Naging Akin where she starred with Maxene Magalona and Wendell Ramos. The series was a consistent top rater in the afternoon slot. [8]

After the success of her afternoon drama, GMA got her to star in the Philippine version of La Lola starring Rhian Ramos. In the series, she played the role of Sabrina, the ex-girlfriend of Rhian's love interest. However, due to her pregnancy, she was pulled out from the show to take her maternity leave. [9]

Turned-down projects

When Sana'y Wala Nang Wakas ended with huge success, Angelika was offered to be the leading lady of her then-boyfriend Jericho Rosales as her next project, but she turned down the role because she was committed to the soap opera with Claudine Barretto, the role of Eden was given to Heart Evangelista. During her stay with ABS-CBN, she was offered the role of Alena in the hit fantasy series of GMA, Encantadia, but she had to turn down the role because of her contract with ABS-CBN, the role was given to Karylle instead. She also turned down the role of Pacita in the fantasy series Super Inggo because she doesn't want to play an anti-heroine role to children; due to this, Angelu de Leon was hired. In 2007, she was about to play the role of Christine in Ysabella and a leading role in Lastikman but her then-manager Boy Abunda felt like the role was not for her so Desiree del Valle and Iya Villania replaced her. Angelika was also asked to do a commercial for White Castle Brandy but she refused to wear two piece; in regard to this Roxanne Guinoo was hired. She subsequently turned down the following roles offered to her by ABS-CBN such as lead role on the then-upcoming show Kapag Langit and Humatol and Pinulot Ka Lang Sa Lupa which were shelved, the anti-heroine role in Babangon Ako't Dudurugin Kita which was bought later on by GMA Network where she accepted the role and she also refused to do a hosting job in the showbiz-oriented talk show Showbiz No. 1 which Rica Peralejo accepted. She was also considered for the lead role of the remake of Rubi. Angelika was also considered for the role of Angelika Santibanez in the hit TV series MariMar but the role was given to Katrina Halili instead.

Controversies

  • When Sunshine Dizon, one of the lead stars of the series Ikaw Lang Ang Mamahalin left the show, a big rumor occurred that Angelika was one of the reasons why she left the show. Angelika denied the issue saying that Sunshine left the show because she did not want to play an antagonist role.[10]
  • Ray Malonzo, a politician, claimed that Angelika dela Cruz is a mistress of Mayor Echeverri. Angelika, who was very furious because of the accusations, denied the issue. [11]
  • When actress Jolina Magdangal transferred from ABS-CBN to GMA, an issue occurred between her and Angelika Dela Cruz saying that the latter was very insecure to the special treatment given to Jolina. There was also an issue that because of her insecurity to the new star of GMA, she refused to do a duet with her in the noontime variety show SOP. Angelika denied the issue and soon did a duet with Jolina, singing the song Tell Me. [12]
  • December 12, 2006, actress Angelika dela Cruz became involved in a car accident. It was due to the traffic in Commonwealth that day that her car was hit by a private vehicle. To her surprise, the owner of the private vehicle started telling the media how Angelika spoke to her in a harsh manner. Angelika denied the issue and filed legal content against the owner of the private vehicle. [13]

Lawsuit Against BMG Records

On March 17, 1995, Angelika (Ma. Lourdes Egger dela Cruz in real life) signed a contract with BMG under which she was required to record at least two albums over three years. But Dela Cruz only recorded one album during the period so BMG exercised on March 23, 1998 its option to extend the contract for two more years.

She was required to record one album, which she was able to do. Despite the expiration of the option period, on May 8, 2000, BMG informed her she still had to record one album under the option period.

On June 5, 2001, Dela Cruz sued and asked for damages, claiming that after recording one album BMG never gave her any proposal for a second one and that despite the lapse of the option period, the firm refused to release her on the ground that she still had to record one album.

The RTC found merit in Dela Cruz’ petition, awarding her payment for damages, and the payment of royalties for the unfulfilled number of required songs under the agreement but BMG appealed the case and CA ruled in Dela Cruz’ favor.

However, CA deleted the lower court’s award to Dela Cruz of P1.5 million in actual damages, P200,000 in moral damages, another P200,000 in exemplary damages, as well as P50,000 in attorney’s fees.

The CA said there was no evidence to support the award of actual, moral and exemplary damages. And since both parties have legitimate claims to each other, CA said the award of attorney’s fees was not warranted. [14]
