The Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a rear-wheel drive sports coupe from Hyundai Motor Company, released on October 13, 2008 for the Korean market. It is Hyundai's first rear-wheel drive sports coupe, and shares its basic platform with the Hyundai Genesis luxury sedan.

The Genesis Coupe arrived in United States dealerships on February 26, 2009 as a 2010 model.[1] Hyundai USA acting President and CEO John Krafcik has described the Genesis Coupe as being designed "...to deliver a driving experience that challenges cars like Infiniti G37.” [1] Hyundai has stated the Genesis Coupe is not a successor to the Hyundai Tiburon.[2] Genesis Coupe is another model totally apart from Tiburon. According to Korean newspaper Autotimes, Hyundai also ready for new model of Tiburon which have 1.6 L/2.0 L Turbo Engine.[3]

Prototype

Photos of a heavily camouflaged Genesis Coupe prototype appeared on the internet as early as May 2007, fueling anticipation and speculation.[4] The spy photos suggested that Hyundai's new coupe would be rear-wheel drive, as pictures of the engine bay showed a longitudinal engine orientation typical of front-engine, rear-drive vehicles. The pictures also showed a four-cylinder engine with a heat-wrapped turbocharger. Speculation on potential engines for the new coupe ranged from the turbocharged four-cylinder pictured to the Tau V8 that Hyundai had developed for the luxury-oriented Genesis.[5]

Shortly before the 2007 Los Angeles International Auto show, more photos were leaked of an uncovered silver Genesis Coupe next to a silver Ford Mustang, presumed to be the Genesis Coupe's target competitor.[6]

Concept Genesis Coupe

Hyundai revealed the concept version of the Genesis Coupe on November 14, 2007.[1][7] The unveiling was hosted by John Krafcik (VP of Product Development for Hyundai Motor America) and Joel Piaskowski (Chief Designer for Hyundai's Californian Design Center). The two debunked myths that the new Genesis Coupe would replace the front-drive Tiburon.

The actual unveiling was prefaced by a skit (dramatizing the leaked spy-photos) where an orange camouflaged coupe performed a burnout and attempted to elude a motorcycle photographer, demonstrating its sports car capabilities. After the skit, the car was revealed with the help of the motorcycle photographer.

The Concept Genesis Coupe was described by Krafcik as "the most emotional, most passionate car from Hyundai ever."

Piaskowski explained that the car unveiled was the production version of the coupe, modified to reflect what the tuner crowd may do when they "get a hold of it". The car featured a vented carbon fiber hood, carbon fiber "ground effects" lip kit, carbon fiber fog light surround, carbon fiber roof, a carbon fiber spoiler, and carbon fiber diffuser.

The production Genesis Coupe was officially debuted at the 2008 New York International Auto Show, showcasing a red and a silver model. The unveiling was accompanied by a demonstration of the coupe's abilities with powerslides and burnouts.

A lime-colored 3.8L Genesis Coupe was shown at the 2008 BUSAN International Motor Show. This car was badged as a Genesis Coupe 380GT.[8]

Engine and transmission

The Genesis Coupe will have two available engines. The base engine will be a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder producing 210 hp (160 kW) and 223 ft⋅lbf (302 N⋅m) torque,[9] with an optional 3.8L Lambda V6 engine producing 306 hp (228 kW) and 266 ft⋅lbf (361 N⋅m) torque [9]

Interesting features of the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine include oil injectors under the pistons to keep them cooler.[10]

A 6-speed manual transmission will be standard equipment, with an optional 5- or ZF 6-speed automatic (depending on engine choice).

Chassis

Optional equipment will include a Torsen Limited slip differential[9] and four-piston Brembo brakes with 13.4" rotors in the front and 13" in the rear. 18" wheels will be standard, while optional 19" wheels using 225/40 tires in the front and 245/40 in the rear will be packaged together with the Brembo brake upgrade.[9]

According to Hyundai, the Genesis Coupe has a 24% stiffer bending rigidity than the BMW E46 M3 coupe.[11]

Dimensions

Marketing

Hyundai took an aggressive stance on their marketing for the new release of this car with Rhys Millen drifting the car to music by Billy Corgan during a Super Bowl advertisement. At the same time as they launched a campaign for the purchase of any new Hyundai that allowed the owner to return the car [provided they have made a minimum number of monthly payments] if they face any qualified economic troubles [job loss, etc.] that precludes the owner from making payments, this campaign is a response to the poor economic conditions in the United States and a struggling car market. It is unclear whether the Genesis coupe will be a part of this campaign or not though. They also launched the website http://www.hyundaigenesis.com/coupe/default.aspx?OpenUrl=http://hyundai.realitydigital.net/clip.aspx?key=26A6F2383E590925 that allowed users such as the example above to create a video that allowed the promotion of their cars this was seen previously by other car manufactures although none promised the final edit to be seen on tv as well as winning a cash prize along with the new car.

Media reviews

  • According to Edmunds.com G37 Comparison Test, Hyundai Genesis Coupe V6 beats out Infiniti G37 by overall score.[26]
  • According to Popular Mechanics G37 Comparison review, "..the extra $10,000 on the price tag of the Infiniti doesn’t seem quite worth it."[21]
  • According to Car and Driver review, "..Then I drove the V-6 model, fast. Whoa, this thing is unexpectedly hard core. There’s vigorous throttle response, a husky V-6 exhaust note, and giddy acceleration. In the canyons, the steering turns in with a vengeance, the car tracks through corners like a race car, and the brakes are from Brembo."[27]
  • According to Motor trend review,"Obviously, Hyundai has much to be proud of with its first rear-drive sport coupe. The value is unbeatable. The quality is tip-top. The road manners are respectable. The styling, with its unique Z-shaped character line and drop-beltline rear window, is standout." [28] And Genesis Coupe listed as 'Worth Waiting For' by Motor Trend.[29]
  • According to The Truth About Cars review, "...The biggest surprise in this entire package: the Genesis Coupe’s steering. While the Europeans seem to favor lighter and lighter steering feel (to disguise their model’s increasingly obese if safety-oriented curb weight), the Genesis feels perfectly weighted and precise. BMW’s M3—yes, that one—should take lessons from the Genesis Coupe’s steering rack. It serves-up Porsche-level feel, with just a tad less precision."[30]
  • According to AutoSpies.com review, "My advice to all the AutoSpies.com faithful... If I was looking at the Mustang, Camaro and Challenger, I'd buy the Genesis Coupe. The Camaro and Challenger are better looking but as I said earlier, I like the driving position of the GC (Genesis Coupe), Z, G and 3 better, so I feel more comfortable driving that style of car and the GC is the better daily driver. Plus it has a 10 year warranty and they will probably be in business then."[31][32]
  • According to The Detroit Bureau review, "Genesis Coupe is still a surprisingly affordable product, but this time, that’s not an excuse for all sorts of cut corners. The compromises are minimal and, if anything, the car delivers the sort of features, handling, performance and package we’d expect from a significantly more expensive automobile. Don’t be surprised to start seeing a lot of them on the road - and on the track."[33]

Motorsport

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe is set to race at the Formula Drift Professional Drifting Championship, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb and select Redline Time Attack Series events in 2009 - thanks to a joint venture between Hyundai and racing champion Rhys Millen, who will drive the Red Bull-sponsored race car on those events.[34]
