Phagwara is a city and a municipal council in Kapurthala district in the north India .

Location

Phagwara is located on the Delhi-Amritsar national highway No.01 and also on the rail link between Delhi and Amritsar. It is located between the two big cities of Ludhiana and Jalandhar. Phagwara is 76 miles away from Chandigarh and 220 miles (355 km) from Delhi. Phagwara is a junction, with rail and road links to other cities as well. Most major trains stop here, e.g. the Shatabdi Express. Phagwara is in the so called NRI (Non Resident Indians) belt of Doaba region of punjab (Doaba: the land bounded by two rivers) The two rivers are the Satluj and the Beas).

Geography

Phagwara is located at 31°13′N 75°46′E / 31.22°N 75.77°E / 31.22; 75.77[1]. It has an average elevation of 234 metres (767 feet).

Demographics

As of 2001 India census[2], Phagwara had a population of 95,626. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Phagwara has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 73%. In Phagwara, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age. The two main religions in Phagwara city are Hinduism and Sikhism.With numerous Mandirs and Gurdwaras in the local vicinity.

Industry

Phagwara is the main industrial centre in the Kapurthala District because of its good location on the national highway. This city has many different types of manufacturing industries, the main ones being textiles, auto components, machine tools and agricultural implements as well as agriculture services,

Famous places

Phagwara is well-known for its affluent economy and industries, with three big mills running in Phagwara namely, J.C.T.(Jagatjit Cotton Textiles), Wahid Sandhar Sugar Mill, and Sukhjit Starch Mill along with many small scale industries manufacturing electrical accessories, machine tools, agricultural implements and rubber. It is an important center for manufacturing of oil engine parts.

Phagwara is famous for NRI's; a large percentage of Punjabi NRI's belong to this area. Scores of people from Phagwara and vicinity have settled abroad, e.g. in the USA, UK, Canada, Italy, Greece, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Austria, to name a few.

It is also the banking hub of Kapurthala District. With more than 45 banks and 63 Offices it comes in the list of top Indian sub-urban cities in the banking business. Also, Phagwara is a big shopping hub with Bazar Bansanwala, Sarafan Bazar and Gaushalla Bazar being the places of attraction for clothing & jewellary.

Many years ago the railway overbridge was completed at Satnampura, Phagwara. The project was completed in 5 years by the Punjab Government.

Another village Gandhwan is also a prominent village. It is famous for its Gurudwara in remembrance of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's son Sri Chand Maharaj Ji who stayed here during his lifetime. Peacocks, the national bird of India, are found here in large numbers, with even 20+ peacocks sometimes seen in fields around the village.

Religious Phagwara

Phagwara is home to people of all religions, although the population mainly follows Hinduism and Sikhism.

Phagwara is well known for its Mandirs and Gurdwaras, like the popular Shiv Mandir on Nima Wala Chowk or famous temple of Hanuman ji on the national highway. It also has many famous Sikh Gurdawaras: Gurudwara Sri Guru Ravidas Maharaj on G.T.Road, Sri Sukhchainana Sahib and Sri Chhevin Patshahi in the interior of the town. On Banga Road, Vishwakarma Mandir is one of the oldest and most sacred places for the Ramgharia community. it also has sindura devi mandir where men are not allowed without permission,it is the only temple in india.

Educational Phagwara

Phagwara is one of the educational hubs of Doaba Area. It boasts of having many prestigious schools & colleges.

The first hi-tech village of North India named Palahi is situated close to the city. Facilities include a community Ramgharia Polytechnic, a college for girls, a football ground, parks, street lights, underground sewerage and a historical gurdwara dedicated to Guru Hargobind Sahib. This village was among a few villages adopted by the central govt. to be developed as a model village.

  • Rajan Zed: Rajan Zed, a Hindu chaplain, who delivered the first Hindu prayer in United States Senate in Washington DC and some other state legislatures of US in 2007.
  • Phagwara is also known for its football team J.C.T Mills, one of the top professional football teams in the country. (Bai Chung Bhutia played for this team).
  • Soccer (Foot ball) player Indira, who was once Indian National team's captain, belongs to this city and still lives with his family in Phagwara.
  • GS Parmar, a well known football player of JCT Mills, Phagwara belongs to Bado/Narur Panchatta/Phagwara
  • Dharmendra, a star Bollywood actor, was born in this city.
  • Anoop Jalota, the famous singer, belongs to this city (Jaloteyan Mohalla)
