Jack King (NASA Public Affairs Officer)

Thanks very much for your attention to Jack King (NASA Public Affairs Officer). It's nice to see someone other than me finally touch the article. TJRC (talk) 20:54, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

3O

Well, I had to go to WP:3O on the Larry Sanger article. I honestly tried to talk it out on the talk page first, but to be honest, I doubt I had a chance of that working. We'll see how it goes. To be honest, I was kind of hoping to avoid any of the boards (at least for a while) - but given the status of Sanger, I thought it was important. We'll see what goes from here I guess. — Ched (talk) 07:17, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism

Hello Huntster! I saw that you fixed some vandalism on my user page. It resulted from some controversy about the Memphis, Tennessee article. Wow, an old lame story going on for ages. Thanks a lot for your help! Take care, doxTxob \ talk 21:56, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

PDF-version of articles

Hello Huntster! I am not sure if you knew that I am German ... well, I am. Anyway, on the German Wikipedia there is a link in the toolbox that enables you to generate and download a PDF-version of any article from the German Wikipedia. (German Wikipedia Mainpage, look for "Werkzeuge" (tools) on the left and the "PDF-Version" link).

I know that you are not only a very smart editor of Wikipedia but that you have expert knowledge of the technical topics as well. Why is this PDF conversion feature not available in the English Wikipedia? PDF is much more neat than the printable version of an article (that is also available on the German Wikipedia as "Druckversion"). It cannot be any copyright issues for the conversion software, I assume, as they should not be much different for Germany than for other civilized countries, incl. the U.S. of A. I tried that feature a few times and I like the results. Do you think this feature can be adopted by the English Wikipedia easily? Take care, doxTxob \ talk 04:04, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(X-Posted) Hey there. I'm not surprised...the German 'pedia typically takes a much more experimental approach to things, but this is because they tend to be very conservative/restrictive in their policies. They've been using flagged revisions for a while now, for example, but this works for them because they have somewhat stricter rules for inclusion than the English site. I don't know exactly why we're not using that particular feature (I doubt it is anything technical), but I have a feeling it is due to image licensing issues. My understanding is that the German site does not allow any non-free images, while the English site does, and this difference may cause problems in distribution. Perhaps one day the English site will start cracking down on such problems, and we can adopt the tool as well. Huntster (t@c) 05:10, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Huntster! I thought I'd bother you again with this topic because when I first saw the possibilities, I was really excited. Because with that system it is also possible to have a collection of your favorite articles printed out as a book. Wow, that is neat, isn't it? I am not so much knowledgable with the technical features and with the relationship of all the Wikipedias in the organization. Well, here is what I found out so far (the pages are in English). It all has somthing to do with the MediaWiki.org [1]. The PDF-export seems to be only one part of the deal, as mentioned before there is also the option to print as a real book. It seems that the printer also offers a public server for the PDF-conversion. [2]
And here is the best thing: They have a bookmarklet there that you can use with other Wikipedias. I have tried it with articles from the en.Wikipedia and it works nicely. When you are on any article page in the en.wiki you can just click it and have the option to download as PDF, OpenDocumentFormat or have it printed for a very reasonable price, even if shipping is included (less than $13 for 48 pages printed, bound and shipped). The downside is that on occasion some page elements like navboxes are not layed out right in the preview and probably in the print as well, as it is a highly automated service. I am definitely going to test the printed and bound version in the next few days to see how that looks like.
Do you think this would work with the en.wikipedia if there were issues with non-free material converted to PDF or printed? I am still thinking about a general implementation of the function on en.wiki. But then, there is the mentioned optional method as described above ... I hope I could let you know something new and neat. Take care, doxTxob \ talk 00:16, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Now, I vandalized the Randolph, Tennessee article that I have mostly written myself for an hour or so to get the stuff fixed that did not look right or was ill-rendered in the printed book version preview and ordered a printed copy before reverting my own test edits back to the stage they were before the test. It seems that you can only print books from the article namespace, not the user namespace, so there is no way to paste the article into your sandbox and retrieve it from there for printing. Just explaining the reason for my madness to you in this case. If you are interested, I'll let you know about the printed results, once the book arrives.
By the way, there is a script version of the PDF, OpenDocument and print your own book feature:
importScript( 'User:Pediapress/collection.js' ); //add this line to your monobook.js file
This adds extra links in your nav bar at the top right side to add an article to your book and one to look at your collection. Very neat, I love it, hope you like it, too. Take care, doxTxob \ talk 04:12, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(X-Posted) Heh, I guess this is a case of "ask and ye shall receive". If you've not noticed, this exact feature has now been enabled on the site...articles will have the same "PDF version" link as the German Wikipedia has. I guess this really was a case of just needing an extension enabled. Cheers! Huntster (t@c) 08:40, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I knew about that. Two weeks ago I have tried out the print books feature but they did not turn out exactly as I wanted. So while I was complaining to the company for a refund or re-print, they let me know that it is planned to implement the PDF and print books feature on the English Wikipedia, pretty soon. By the way, they re-printed the books without further charges and the second try was just as I wanted it. Perfect! Take care, doxTxob \ talk 23:02, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Personal Note

Hi Huntster. I wanted to drop a note on some off topic developments (sort of). I recently attended a city council meeting (at their request) regarding a database I designed and developed for emergency responders (PD, VFD, EMS). It seems that they like what I've done, and have now bumped it up to county admins to see if my work can be incorporated at a county-wide level. OK - I admit - a "toot my own horn" thing, but thought you might be mildly interested as you also perform an invaluable public service as well.

On a "downside" kind of note - I recently had to spend some time at a police station. I finally had time to visit a library (in search of documenting some info from microfilm archives of local newspapers). I hope to find enough info to make a Heidelberg Raceway article for wikipedia, but need more than what the web provides. Anyway - while I was there, (I had my wallet out to get my ID and library card out), I ended up leaving my wallet on the front desk of the library while the director showed me the sections and resources they had available. When I came back to the front desk, I found that someone had lifted my wallet! Geesh! Stealing in a library, ... almost as bad as a church! Anyway, despite my total depression - I'll continue on, and try to make Wikipedia a better place .. ;). You're probably already aware that I consider you one of Wikipedia's most valuable assets, and it makes me proud of my daughter's generation that people like you rise to the level you do (both on and off wiki). I'm sure you're busy, but I wanted to drop you a note -- I hope life is treating you well. — Ched (talk) 06:39, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lunar orbiter I

(X-Posted) FYI, your change to Lunar Orbiter 1 resulted in a...well...I don't know what happened, but it broke the template: diff. I've changed to straight text, which is without question human readable. Huntster (t@c) 05:54, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. It was an error in my conversion process. I was subst'ing the old template to render the new template, and as you will see in my edit, I neglected to perform the second pass to remove the mumbly special characters. It will work fine if these are replaced, (58- colon, and 32 = space). I have not restored with this fix because there is a dispute on whether one template is more desirable than the other. In case you are interested, there is a discussion of the issue at Manual of style- numbers. Mars Climate Orbiter was lost due to lack of intelligibility of numeric information resulting in a unit error between JPL and Lockheed. Same issue here. -J JMesserly (talk) 16:43, 14 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(X-Posted) Yeah, I had a feeling those ASCII character codes were the culprit, but wasn't sure if they were an integral part of what you were trying to accomplish. To Andy below, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a limited run, manually-operated test of alternative methods of doing similar things. If this new system proves more robust and capable than the old, then it deserves its place on the site, same as any other template, system, or method of operation. Aussie

(X-Posted) Aussie dictionary is here. Huntster (t@c) 15:41, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Huntster, thanks for link to dictionary - bummer though, won't work with version 3.1 (mine). I'm sure there'll be one soon though. Have a good one. Oh - I have bunch of pictures of covered bridges, should I dig them out? (I saw a recent article you contribed to). — Ched (talk) 16:47, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey

Weren't you going to upload those L-Per pictures? I apologize if you're busy, but for right now that's all I can think of to work on the encyclopedia. —  scetoaux (T|C) 22:49, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My talk page

I've got people coming to me for advise now? Those poor ... lost ... misguided souls.. LOL. — Ched (talk) 21:39, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just wanted to say Thanks, once again Huntster - guess I just lost my WWHD moto there for a day or so.  ;) — Ched (talk) 13:43, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Appreciate that ;) ... building up quite a backlog of "I owe ya"'s — Ched (talk) 12:24, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
re: H2O - OK, I admit to looking for an article you keep and eye on. Even pulled up some clips on YouTube to get familiar with the subject. (Then promptly called my daughter and told her to have my granddaughter watch it ;)) I hate having a huge backlog of "I owe ya" out there ... lol. A little to late to owe ya my first born, so I have to think of something else ;) — Ched (talk) 16:56, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(X-Posted) Lmao, that's hilarious. You know, I've been dealing with that article topic for so long, that I don't even remember now how I first came across it. I think someone asked me to take a look, but I don't know. Don't let anyone tell you that double-checking other's work is a bad thing...it most assuredly is not. Sure, there are some people who may take offence to it, but to be brutally direct, that's their problem. Also, don't ever feel like you owe me anything. We're all volunteers here, doing it for the fun of it. If you feel like you owe people, then it moves that much closer to being a job, and that is just not acceptable :) Huntster (t@c) 19:49, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Celtic Woman image

(X-Posted) Greetings. I've deleted the file File:Lisa Chloë Máiréad Alex Órla Lynn.jpg because it is a non-free image of living persons, which is prohibited on the site. Please see Wikipedia:Non-free content#Images 2, point #12, and to an extent, #11 and . If you have any questions, please leave a note on my talk page. Cheers. Huntster (t@c) 09:38, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Awww man! I thought I did everything right on that thing. What does one have to do to get a “free” picture of our favorite musical group? KeltieMartinFan (talk) 10:08, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(X-Posted) Yeah, it sucks, but we do strive to be free. The best option is to try to take a photograph yourself, should you have the opportunity. Folks will occasionally post free images on Flickr...I try to check there periodically myself. One final possibility would be to get CW to release one of their promo images (like the one you uploaded) into the public domain, or under a Commons-acceptable license (GFDL or CC-By-SA, etc). The process of release is a bit complicated, but such a promo pic will of course yield the highest-quality image. Huntster (t@c) 19:57, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

otters and other stuff

LOL about the otters and all, had seen him around a lot - and always wondered. Loved that "don't drink and ban" edit summary. Ya know, I've been thinking about Wikipedia and a good real life analogy - growing up on a farm (which I did). It can be really beautiful, the lush green grass is wonderful and all - but you need to watch where you're stepping. And sooner or later, ya will step into a pile of crap, but the trick is knowing where to wipe your feet, and not stepping into an even bigger pile. Looks like the NASCAR race is heading toward a good finish here too. (which has absolutely noting to do with anything - just that I was watching). — Ched (talk) 01:43, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(X-Posted) <me> cries because he didn't know the race was on. </me> At least I'll catch the end. Huntster (t@c) 01:47, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You know you've exceeded your wiki-holic levels when you forget NASCAR .. LMAO. — Ched (talk) 01:50, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

my talk page

Would you have time to look at the Huh? thread on my talk page. I found the obvious stuff easy enough in various page histories - I'm not sure what to make of the question though? Doesn't matter to me where you post a reply - you already know I stalk your page .. LOL (good race by the way) — Ched (talk) 03:20, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Merge

hey Huntster, how you doing this weekend? I'm working on a merge (here) - I already closed and archived the talk pages - and copied some of the stuff over. I hope to get done later tonight, but I was hoping you would have time to look over everything before I do the actual #redirect. Just to make sure I'm not missing anything. Hope all is going good for ya - talk to you later. ;) — Ched (talk) 20:56, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

also, can I move Timeline of notable computer viruses and worms to "Timeline of notable computer malware" I'd like to do it myself for the experience, but not unless you're online and can check me. Wouldn't want to miss a redirect, or mess up the "What links here" items. Thanks — Ched ~ (yes?) 19:56, 1 March 2009 (UTC) (reminder: Vegas Race on Fox at 3:30) ;)[reply]

Sorry to arrive so late, been a bit busy over the past couple of days. I see you've got the articles merged...I see nothing out of the ordinary. As for the rename, so long as noone on the talk page has a problem with it, then you are free to do so. Just give it a few days to see if there are any objections. I trust you'll do fine, but if you want, I'll double check the move when you've finished it. Huntster (t@c) 06:58, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, I'm astonished with the sheer amount of talk page activity you've got going on! You've probably generated as much traffic in one month as I do in a whole year. Not to mention, far more active than me. Kudos! Huntster (t@c) 07:03, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(ec)No problem - I was half tempted to drop a "You appear to be engaged in an edit war" note on your talk page - but thought better of it, at least until you got everything under control. ;) ... I'll drop a "Move" discussion on the talk page first then, and check back later for objections (doubtful). Seriously though, you may want to call down to the station if he's that close, better safe than sorry - CYA.
Did you get to see the race? .. Jamie Mac pulled a drifting move that can go in the next Fast and Furious movie ... lol. — Ched ~ (yes?) 07:08, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, edit war with regards to the vandalism and such going on? Yeah, that's a mess. Guy is caught red-handed and still won't admit to his errors. Oh well. And I'm not concerned with his proximity...there's virtually no way for him to know who I am, locate me, or even really determine where I work (not to mention *when*). In the unlikely event he would make any moves in real life, I know I have blue backup. *grin* And no, didn't get to see the race, sounds like it was a darn good one. Huntster (t@c) 07:13, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

LMAO, if only all editors were as teachable! If only I was as teachable, hehe. Avoid teh dramaz! Huntster (t@c) 07:24, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the kind words :) Yeah, I saw where you were working to rescue Shutdown Day. At first I was concerned it was too non-notable, but there appear to be several varied sources within Google News (link) that you may find useful as refs. Not sure if there needs to be separate subsections for each year...I doubt each iteration is notable enough; and do remember to change all references to inline citations, rather than just hanging in the References section. Huntster (t@c) 07:41, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for news links! - and yea ... I'll do the proper format for the refs here shortly - very rough draft right now, and was just taking short-cuts (even though I shouldn't). After the Study Skills purging, I've learned to save to HD too, just in case. Yea, now that I think about it a bit, you're right, probably should just flush the separate years. Thx for checking it out ;) — Ched ~ (yes?) 07:49, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Copied per preferred page style and content. (looks like you've been having a bad week). But, you'll have to do the sort per time continuity - As Bones would say to Kirk on Star Trek - "Damn it Jim, I'm an editor - not a secretary!" — Ched ~ (yes?) 02:58, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

re: Activity

TechOutsider decided I wasn't working against him, and is now very communicative in wanting to know which directions to go in his Norton persuits. ;) ... and every time I find one door of knowledge here - I open it and find 20 more things to learn .. LOL. RoyalBroil I found is also a race fan, and I've been looking at how things get to GA and FA. Business has been slow this month, which has given me time to try to get up to speed as best I can here. I did find that advice you gave me long ago was the best advice - first I moved all the drama (AN) pages off my watchlist - then deleted the whole page I had put them on. I find I much more time to actually learn and contribute now too ... LOL. I saw activity starting up again on the Larry Sanger article, and instead of posting anything at all, I simply asked PeterSymonds to watchlist. see ... I'm teachable ;-) — Ched ~ (yes?) 07:16, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, nice having "blue friends" .. ;) .. got all the Red Cross first aid and CPR certs out of the way Sat. too. Have a new pet project too - I found this in the NPP garbage can, I have some high hopes for it over time. Race was good too, sorry you couldn't catch it. And let's not forget to give credit to my teacher too! You're good folk Huntster, and I'm grateful and appreciative for all your help here. — Ched ~ (yes?) 07:31, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

un-vandal?

Hey Huntster, how you doing tonight? I noticed you fixed the image/link thing on my talk page, and... history shows that the editor before you was a vandal - then unvandal. Didn't know if he really thought twice about his post - or if you removed something REALLY NASTY with one of your super-duper admin buttons.

Which reminds me of something I never figured out. When I first started, I went to my user page, and since it was blank with the edit box - I went to read about editing basics. When I came back to start my user page, there was a page there that just said lolololol. I created (or rather edited) the page, and started my wiki-career. After I learned a little more, (page history, user contribs, etc.) I came back. the lololol thing seems to be the only edit user Nickjenk ever made? Just seems very strange - any ideas? Oh well, nothing really important or anything - was just curious. Hope life and edits are treating you well. — Ched ~ (yes?) 00:54, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Have you signed up yet? ... Will you put in a good word for me ... LMFAO. — Ched ~ (yes?) 02:27, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

IRL

(x-posted) - I'm a bit haggard and out-of-it at the moment (really really bad week) and failed to follow up with Tech regarding those screenshots. I'll try to write something tomorrow. If either of you need advise regarding image licensing of any kind, please ask on my talk page. — Huntster (t • @ • c) 19:22, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

HEY HUNTSTER! - Sounds like you need a break from real life <* enter Wikipedia, stage left *> .. Just kidding. I was guessing that IRL was pressing you, but was hoping it was all in a good way ;( .. I'll hope now that it's work related (and due to the economy and nation wide rates - a distinct possibility). At worst I'll hope that it's school related, and something that some hard work can overcome all issues. I figure you may be closing in on finals before long (at least many of our fine educational facilities are anyway). I surely hope it's not personal issues that have caused a "really really bad week". I have a few items to fill you in on (minor in comparison, and perhaps you're already aware of them), but I'll hold off on that until you've grabbed some relaxation. Appreciate the offer on image items, and will take you up on that when the time comes. Remember, editors may only be "wiki-friends", but at the end of a TCP/IP sits a real person who is a friend IRL too. — Ched ~ (yes?) 01:33, 8 March 2009 (UTC) (ps - hope I did the x-post thing right)[reply]

Language question

Hello, I've got a question about the meaning of a sentence. Does "No-one must do X" mean:

  • "No-one is required to do X" or
  • "No-one is allowed to do X"?

This confuses me because I learned in school that "must do" and "must not do" have a different meaning than "have to do" and "don't have to do", and I don't know in which way "no-one" negates the "must". Thanks. (Feel free to reply here.) – sgeureka tc 14:51, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

sorry to but in - but Huntster seems pretty busy IRL lately. In my area (NE USA - Pittsburgh, PA) - it usually means no one should do X. (or it's not allowed) ;) — Ched ~ (yes?) 16:36, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Ched. – sgeureka tc 21:56, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Ched is right...it is disallowing the person(s) from doing X (rather than simply not requiring the action). In my experience, the term "must" creates an absolute condition, which cannot (or should not) be negated. Sorry I've been mostly absent lately...things are a bit rough lately. Amy Lee

I was combing through the archives at Talk:Amy Lee recently, and I found a section in one of said archives, where someone brought up her declining popularity, and you said you had lost respect for her like other people. I was just wondering, out of pure curiosity, why have you lost respect for her? Don't get me wrong, I'm not asking this question so I can judge you, because I'm not her biggest fan either, aside from her music, as you can tell on the talk page (which I apologize for starting that unnecessary debate, it was really pointless of me to do that). --Whip it! Now whip it good! 06:25, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I did a little work on the article - hope that's ok. — Ched ~ (yes?) 10:53, 12 March 2009 (UTC) (hope things are getting better for you as well)[reply]

TN Project banner

Hey Huntster, this question is not urgent, I heard you are pretty busy. I was thinking of making the banner similar to the Arkansas project banner, with the B-class checklist in it but I do not want to do that at the location. Is it possible to do that in the user sandbox? That meta-banner also includes sub-pages, and I have no experience with that. Well, I am also not sure if anyone is interested at all. Has the actual project work ceased and everyone is pursuing their own stuff or do you think no one cares? Or is the lack of responses to be interpreted as no (or yes)? Take care, doxTxob \ talk 22:59, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just in case you haven't had time to check out the vandalism of your talk page: This may be tied into an unblock request for this IP. It all seems to revolve around the edits here And in case you're wondering, I'm the one that asked Peter about what should be done on the vandalism on IRC - I know you're a big boy and can handle your own pages, but I also know you've been busy too. per this, first thank you. But I don't understand why I was a target for that kind of crap. Is it all somehow wrapped up with the TN schools, and my wiki-friendship with you? Or is it just random luck of the draw? Not that it matters all that much, not really a big deal - just curious. — Ched ~ (yes?)/© 10:28, 24 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Recurring Abusive Users

Out of curiosity, what options are there for determining if a current user is actually the same person as a past user who has been blocked? I ask because the recent edit history of User:Cadet Programs and User:68.187.89.72 appear very similar to past edits by User:Braaad. He has established multiple sock puppets in the past, and has a history of odd and abusive behavior. Thanks. McNeight (talk) 20:43, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey-Huntster! I have just read some fairly shocking things that this McNeight person has written about other users and I am concerned that he is now trying defame my character through additional libelous commentary. Many of McNeight's comments are quite shocking, threatening, rude, and down right bizarre. I thought this was going to be a fun place?! After being attacked by OuroborosCobra, I have NO desire for another round by someone who wants to connect me to happenings in 2005. WOW--CyberStalkers are everywhere. I think I must leave Wiki Land forever. Maybe you have some oversight where these dangerous people are concerned. Cadet Programs (talk) 17:29, 5 April 2009 (UTC) Peace to you my friend.[reply]

Oh .. been meaning to mention something too. Even though you don't hang out at the XfD stuff a lot, it looks like the AfD process has gone from 5 days to 7 days. Kind of flew under the radar a bit, so I just thought I'd mention that there was a long thread on the AfD talk page that discussed that little tit-bit. — Ched :  ?  12:07, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Susan Boyle

My edits to the susan boyle article are based on sources provided in the article. I have added links. She indeed had suffered learning dissabilities, due to oxygen deprivation, and was teased because of that, according to her own story, and so clearly it is not an insult to add that information. Could you please check the references instead of threatening; if you disagree with something, describe why you think something is not appropriate for biography and how does entering facts, admitted by the person violate rules (if it does). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Maxodon (talkcontribs) 23:42, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

HUNTSTER!!! hey buddy -- how ya doin? ... yep ... I noticed that you can't get a word in edgewise over at that article. I'll die down soon enough I'd think though. I'm looking forward to maybe working on it in the future though. lots of material and all. Soooo good to see you have time to drop a line too. So much to catch up on. I'm gonna be heading down through TN here in early May, any pics you'd like me to take while I'm on tour? — Ched :  ?  00:50, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe 65 on the way down, then back up 75 on the way home .. at least to Knoxville .. but it's very open at the moment. Prolly spend at least one day in Nashville, I usually do anyway. — Ched :  ?  00:58, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Eh .. hopefully the weather will be nice, I always like to get good shots of sunsets, scenery, interesting buildings and all. My niece is graduating from college - so it's a good road trip. Not sure how much time I'll have to just lollygag yet though - business is starting to pick up quite a bit. But I'm going to try to think inside the "wikipedia" box while I'm clicking away, so maybe I might get something worthwhile. I just started uploading some pics to commons .. only a couple there so far - but I have plenty to add to that collection. Haven't really figured out how this license change affects anything - seems to be more a convenience to things outside wiki in regards to the share alike stuff.
I'm looking at your talk page too ... it's gonna take you a week to get this all sorted out and archived .. lol.
Looks like Allegheny county is going to be absorbed by Pittsburgh, and the 911 center still wants to work with my emergency response database, but until they can come up with some sort of compensation - I haven't been particularly pro-active on it. I don't mind volunteer work, but at some point .. you just have to say "enough".
Not prying, but I do hope things are getting better for you on the real life end of things. Sooo glad you have a few moments to drop a personal note too - I appreciate that!!! I look forward to working with you on the Boyle article (once it calms down a bit .. lol). How's things going with the 33 article? ... don't think I helped very much, even though I did try. — Ched :  ?  01:36, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Villanova? ... cool. I enjoy photography, thought about going into it professionally when I was graduating high school even. In fact, a 35mm SLR was my graduation present. But, I fell in love, took a meaningless job, got married, and didn't even get back to college until I was XX years old. I have a decent camera now, but it could be better - so I just enjoy what I can, when I can. Looking at some of the things you keep an eye on, I can see why you'd get frustrated. I try to get involved in more and more the longer I'm here, but I've found that there's a limit too - and I'll just disappear from conversations when they get beyond the "fun" stage. I go through stages of jumping into various sections of Wikipedia, policy, AfD, RfA, "Not", etc. to learn .. and I'm so glad that I have NASCAR and Royalbroil to fall back on once I've had my fill of "learning". At the NASCAR stuff, everyone works together, helps each other, and supports each other - kind of like NASCAR in real life. I even went out and "bought" some reference books for the subject, which reminds me that I really need to get back to editing actual articles there too. I enjoy the debates over various things, but when they degrade into childish "but, but, but" arguments, I tend to think ... "Whatever .. talk to the hand, cause the person is leaving". You're 100% right .. it has to be enjoyable, we're not getting paid for this. And thanks to your kind guidance when I first started, I do enjoy it here. ;) — Ched :  ?  02:57, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures

Ahh ... Deep breath here. OK .. now, the legal aspects of photographs. As I understand it, if a person is a public figure, and I take a picture of him/her - then I am free to post that picture anywhere I want. So, If I took a picture of Dale Earnhardt while he was in a public forum, it's perfectly fine to post that picture here? .. am I right so far? ... Now, I take a picture that has people that are NOT public figures, but the picture was taken while they were out in public. Do I need to have a release form signed by them in order to post the picture? I have pictures from back in the 70's of race car stuff. I don't want to just upload the pics and run the risk of someone saying they didn't allow their picture to be posted in public. I'll stop there for the moment, and go with more questions once I understand what you reply with ... good to see you back by the way! ;) — Ched :  ?  23:45, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

cool. I'll send you my info in the next day or two. Not that anyone will ever figure out my network - but at least with phone numbers and such, you could contact folks. Yea, it was tough to try to write all that up, but I thought it was important to. That's not the time for admins to be having a debate over things - better to have something to go on. Actually I'm really surprised at how many folks have commented, I figured a bunch of young people that don't want to consider that - maybe 10 - 15 comments. — Ched :  ?

Release dates of singles

Huntster, the reason I'm changing release dates for music singles is because I have developed a method of finding out when a song debuted in the top 10 or 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 and then subtracting it by 18 days. I suggest creating links that show when a single was released to avoid further confusion and altering involving me. Thanks. StanMarsh19 (talk) 04:46, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for replying back, but will you accept my request so I won't do this again? It also might be helpful for other people. If there is a reason why you are declining my offer, please let me know. StanMarsh19 (talk) 21:48, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm talking about looking for when a music single is released in the United States or anywhere around the world, and if you find them, you make a link leading to the website that shows when the single was released. I don't know how to make one, and I'm not sure if know, too. If you don't, I may consider having some other Wikipedia nerd figure out all the mumble-jumble that I created and fix it. If I do this again, feel free to suspend me from the website. StanMarsh19 (talk) 21:58, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that's EXACTLY what I was trying to explain to you. StanMarsh19 (talk) 22:29, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Huntster - hope life is treating you better than the economy is treating everyone else. ;). Had a great trip down through TN, KY, VA, Alabama etc., but didn't get as much in the line of pics as I had hoped. Was good to get away from WP for a bit I think - and I see that not much has changed in a week ... lol. I try to remember my "roots" in WP, and did want to drop in and say hi to you, and wish you well before I get too involved again in "editing" again. Also had a quick favor to ask. I know your time here is limited, but if you could look in on the SoxBot V from time to time, it may be worth keeping an eye on. I see that X! is taking a wiki-break, and there was a glitch in the admin-highlighter do-dad this morning. User:Ais523/adminrights.js >> User:Ais523/adminrights-admins.js >> User:SoxBot V/adminrights-admins.js. SoxBot V basically blanked the admin list briefly, then restored it a short time later. I'm not savy enough to know if that's a housekeeping chore or not. I did notice that it's been done before though. Anyway, hope all is well on your end, all my best - Ched: — Ched :  ?  13:50, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Evanescence order and formats

[3] Should this be undone, too? Wasn't alphabetical order chosen for some reason? Also, I undid the date format change. It's a moderately common style in references to distinguish publication dates in a "regular" format and the access dates in an ISO-style format. Whatever the current wording of MOSNUM, my understanding was that this style wouldn't be disallowed. Gimmetrow 23:19, 22 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I had seen that WebciteBot come in and do its thing on an article I was working on a while back. And I even mentioned the whole idea that webcitation.org could help with his 24 articles. He had been manually saving links, and printing out the hardcopy for the articles. I should really put some time into that project for him, but so many of the sources for 24 revolve around blog type material. I know some of it is acceptable if it's a major news outlet with publishing oversight, but I'm just cautious about referencing those things on the edge. I think I asked a question at BAG one time, but it's not an area I'll be active in for quite a while. I love the bots when they work right, and I know a couple of the guys to ask if I want to do something .. so I'll probably just cheat and say "Hey Mr.-Z, MZM, etc. .. can ya do me a favor"? ... lol). • the official CBS website lists her name as Kensi Blye
  • IMDB lists the name as Blye
  • several other sources (do a Google search) list it as Blye
  • the preview trailer for NCIS: LA from their website and YouTube states it as Blye
  • other official CBS videos state the surname as Blye

Perhaps we should leave the name as Kensi Blye until we find out officially whether it is otherwise. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrewconnell (talkcontribs) 18:23, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Help!!!! Problem in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation

User:86.130.179.73 is putting a bunch of crufty info on new character Kaye Sullivan into that page, and their other edits are often questionable. Can you help on this? I am hesitant to blank the page for fear of being flagged for it - but there is absolutely no citations available about this character other than she will be on CSI according to CSI Files - no word on who might play her. Thank you. Trista (user: Triste Tierra - not allowed to log in at work) 24.176.191.234 (talk) 21:38, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted and redirected the article, and warned the user. Huntster (t@c) 22:29, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed this was also the user who was listing Bob Dole as an NCIS and NCIS: LA cast member and had listed Kim Delaney as a new CSI Vegas cast member - so I went ahead and reported them. There have been several problems similar to this one with the CSI/NCIS pages, and I am personally tired of it. I want them and Wikipedia in general to be good sources, not a playground for idiots. I am one of those people who would GLADLY give up being able to edit on my IP address (unable to log in at work), if IP's and new users (redlinks?) were blocked from major edits. I also think a month of semi-protection on all the CSI/NCIS pages might be enough to get rid of many of the vandals, but I also realise they would just find something else to screw around with. Thank you very much Huntster. Cheers! Trista 24.176.191.234 (talk) 22:41, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good deal on reporting the problem. Since I have no familiarity with the situation, that's definitely the best option. Thankfully, flagged revisions will be enabled soon, so hopefully that will keep out the majority of junk edits (at least from the live versions of the pages. Huntster (t@c) 22:46, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
User:86.130.166.218 is almost definately the same person. I used WHOIS and found it's the same ISP, and today they were putting uncited cast member Marianne Jean-Baptiste in the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation cast list. You already reverted the other 5 made-up names for NCIS: Los Angeles. Just letting you know. TristaBella (talk) 22:51, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wicca page and other stuff

Greetings Huntster! I do not only root around in the CSI/NCIS pages. I notice there is much borderline vandalism going on in the Wicca page also. I know this is difficult to control, as there are so many opinions on it. I myself am not willing to add to the page, even with solid resources, as I am still too easily p.o.'ed when people take apart my edits...but that's my own problem to deal with. Anyway, may I politely suggest a semi-protect of the page against editing by anon. IP's and new users? I do believe I've told you I would willingly give up my IP editing priveleges if Wikipedia made everyone register with a verifiable e-mail address. I want free speech as much as anyone else, but also want Wikipedia to be a reliable resource, and not just a playground for bored twits. Okay, off my soapbox now <grin>. The semi-protect of Wicca is just something for you to think about.

By the way, can you tell me exactly where I can find the section in TV Projects that says former cast members are always left in the main info box listing? All I can get from a particular admin (who only does this to one show) is "this is the way we deal with" former cast members. I want to be a good editor, but it's difficult when a request for the rules is ignored (the request was in several places - there's no way it wasn't seen). I also wonder if some shows, such as Law & Order, would not have hugely unwieldy info boxes if all former actors were listed. Thanks again for all your help. I'm not stalking you, but trying to watch your edits so I can learn how such things are done properly. And thank you for not biting me for doing things wrong. Polite responses go so much further than a "do as I say, not as I do" or "not done right, so it's being ignored". Cheers, TristaBella (talk) 20:18, 28 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, sending you a big, fat Zen hug! TristaBella (talk) 20:50, 28 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Stubborn editor tampering with the Lisa Kelly article

Hey Huntster,

We got a stubborn editor, 75.23.77.202 (talk), who is keen on keeping Lisa Kelly’s actual birth name out and just have it read “Lisa Kelly”. I was hoping I may get your help on this one...cuz at this point, it doesn’t seem like this editor isn’t going to back down on this. Thanks. KeltieMartinFan (talk) 20:14, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Huntster, I need your help with this asap. This editor is not backing down on his ways with this article. KeltieMartinFan (talk) 12:09, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey you

Hey Huntster. I noticed that you updated your page recently. I wanted to mention that there was another "vandal" thingie a couple weeks ago, if you check your page history. I reverted and blocked the "editor" - and due to his reply, another admin made it an "indef". So, just saying - I guess you can up that "vandalized" thingie by one. Anyway, it seems like ages since we talked. I miss that. I know you have a busy life and all, but please don't ever forget how much I look to you for what is right. I hope you're still keeping an eye on me my friend, I've gotten a bit "bold" at times lately. Yank me back in when I get stupid please. If you're thinking about going to that Nashville "meet-up" ... PLEASE .. let me know. I'll find a way to get there. I so owe you a few drinks! Hope all is well, and all my best buddy - Ched. — Ched :  ?  06:36, 11 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: W for We're

Hey Huntster, I'll double check around about the W (We're) thing.. I don't think it's a hard and fast rule, but I used to work at WKPT-TV, and the W was used in promotions when the station first signed on the air, as We're Kingsport (in fact, it was actually "We're the ones in KingsPorT," to distinguish Channel 19 from the other stations in nearby Johnson City and Bristol. I also know specifically, that WLAC in Nashville was promoted as "We're Life And Casualty," meaning the insurance company that put the station on the air, WTVC in Chattanooga was We're TeleVision Chattanooga, and WHBQ in Memphis (We Have Better Quartets--alluding to the old radio promotions). Some stations used variants of the W, as World's Best Textiles (WBT, Charlotte), and Welcome South Brother (WSB, Atlanta), but the stations that I have a list of, definitely used the W to mean "We" or "We're." I've got the list somewhere, and will forward it to you ( or the appropriate website) Csneed (talk) 02:55, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mini Schnauzer picture wars

There is no point in a war over these pictures. I've included them both. The classic head shot is a fantastic picture, I agree. But the other user will keep adding the picture (it is back again). I moved some pictures to the gallery, and expanded the captions. I also took some out. How many salt and peppers do we need. We could use some of the other colors, even if they aren't accepted as "show" in AKC. I saw my first white mini the other day. Auntieruth55 (talk) 20:11, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New seasons of all CSI and Law and Order Shows being put up

Hello Huntster, Trista here. There is a small, stubborn little group that is putting up the next season of all the CSI and Law and Order shows, with absolutely no citations whatsoever. I am afraid to blank them, as then I will get flagged. Any advice to me? They are not all the same people, but there is one person who is responsible for much of the page creating. Thank you. Trista (user Triste Tierra - cannot log in at work) 24.176.191.234 (talk) 17:59, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

question

If moving to Pennsylvania would be an option - perhaps I could help. You have my phone number from my confidential info that I sent in the event that my WP:RIP would need to be addressed. I don't want to pry, but you have been a good friend that I would be willing to help in any way, shape or form that I could Huntster. My thoughts and prayers my friend. — Ched :  ?  23:22, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

do you still get email through the wiki-link? I have an offer to make if you would be in need, and willing to relocate. — Ched :  ?  06:32, 21 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yep...

I'm pretty dumbfounded at the moment. ;) I'm wondering if I'm working with a prodigy that I soon won't even be worthy of. I've seen some absolute brilliance come his keyboard - and at times I'm downright intimidated. I guess I'll hang on as long as I can, and try to learn as much as I can. ;) — Ched :  ?  03:58, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just remember, you're an admin, so don't be afraid to swat them down if they become to uppity ;D Huntster (t@c) 04:30, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
LOL ... I'll keep that in mind. ;) ... after all, I did have a good teacher ;P — Ched :  ?  04:35, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely! I mean, this is our website...we just let the others play here, right? :D Huntster (t@c) 04:37, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Damn straight! :D — Ched :  ?  05:01, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Aww Crap ...

Now I've gone and done it. Can I come and hide here for a while? ;) — Ched :  ?  10:45, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm surprised I haven't gotten any fallout over it really. I know FT2 is a pretty high ranking editor around here, and I was a tad afraid that he'd land on me pretty hard for closing that. I just thought that the whole thing had pretty well played out and all. I mean, after Jimbo and ArbCom - where else is there left to go really? It seemed to me that both Bish and Daed both admitted to regretting a couple posts that got overly emotional - and neither one of them seemed to want to pursue anything further. I didn't see reviewing things that had happened 2 years ago as terribly productive either. I've never worked with Bish on any articles or anything, but I do rather enjoy a couple alt. persona things she's got going on. Seems like a nice girl/lady with an enjoyable sense of humor and all. I guess I was worried about nothing really. Hopefully time will mend some of the wounds, and things will be better in the future.  :) — Ched :  ?  04:07, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Convert bug

Thanks for fixing the bug in {{convert}}. We didn't, however, kill the bug, only side stepped it. I tracked that bug down to {{precision}}.

Template:Precision (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

It's alive and well. I've got a new version on the talk page which kills the bug. JIMp talk·cont 00:39, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Could you check the Template:Precision/testcases page? It appears there are still some inconsistencies, even with the proposed new version. Plastikspork (talk) 00:55, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The inconsistencies are due to the limits in the capacity of the system in term of the number of significant figures it can handle. JIMp talk·cont 01:01, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank goodness for these dawgone geeks we have gnoming around here huh? — Ched :  ?  06:28, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Could you check those changes you made again? Talk:Rudolf Caracciola has an example now where the convert template reports "Expression error: Unexpected < operator|Expression error: Unexpected < operator|(Expression error: Unexpected < operator)|Expression error: Unexpected < operator".
