Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by 86.147.161.209 (talk) at 12:13, 9 June 2010 (Errors in Did you know?). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 04:03 on 7 November 2024) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems because this is not a talk page. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

Errors in the summary of today's or tomorrow's featured article

..."designed by Lt Peter Halkett..." I'm assuming Lt means Lieutenant. In that case, as it is an abbreviation it should have a period after the 't' ("Lt. Peter"), and wikilink probably wouldn't go amiss. -- saberwyn 03:02, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I always thought full stops (or "periods" or whatever we're going to call them) weren't used when the last letter of the abbreviation was the same as that of the abbreviated word. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 03:12, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I changed it to Lieutenant and linked it, along with Peter Halkett. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 03:16, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm under the opposite impression (Dr., Mr., etc.) but think your soulution of using the full word is better. -- saberwyn 03:22, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
For future reference our article at Abbreviation#Periods (full stops) and spaces covers this very nicely. Since Lt is merely a contraction of Lieutenant (ie it is shortened by the omission of the middle part only) it does not have a full stop whereas abbreviations (where the word is cut off part way through) such as Prof. (for professor) do have. The article contains some nice examples of where it can be either (rev. or revd) or both (Rt Hon.). Although, of course, British and American (and presumable Australian, hence your posting here) usage differs with full stops (periods I suppose!) being used after contractions as well - Dumelow (talk) 09:46, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
"Sir Peter Halkett (1820–1885) inventor of the Halkett boat for Arctic exploration, son of the 7th Baronet" would seem to refer to him. I was very surprised that there was no article for him, even if it just said that. Still probably preferable to have no link than to have a dab link - Dumelow (talk) 11:20, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In my defense, that was pre-coffee. --Floquenbeam (talk) 11:58, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's not linked would be because "Sir Peter Halkett (1820–1885) inventor of the Halkett boat for Arctic exploration, son of the 7th Baronet" didn't exist, and has just been added to the dab page by a vandal. This Peter Halkett has nothing to do with Peter Halkett, 8th Baronet, who was six years old at the time in question. – iridescent 12:02, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
