Hayao Miyazaki: Master of Japanese Animation

行こう

Given that this is a verb in the う conjugation, wouldn't it be parsed as ikou?—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 01:40, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nope. It should be "ikō". The only time you don't use "ō" with an "ou" is when they are from two separate kanji (as in Narumi Kakinouchi). ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 04:15, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I thought that you separate it for verbs that are using う for their conjugation, like with 追う and 背負う.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 06:49, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Nope. Only the example with kanji like above. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 05:21, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Science Fiction Portal Development

I'm planning on creating a science fiction portal in the next 2-3 months time period. I've been planning on creating it for some time now, but i've been working on other articles, which have soaked up the time. What i'm really looking for is advice in and around creating and maintaining it. Whats the article cycle time for each specific area of the portal, etc, etc, etc. Any help would be appreciated. scope_creep (talk) 00:05, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Have you considered working to improve the speculative fiction portal, especially the science fiction content there? I ask because the horror portal has basically died because of lack of content and people to work on it. I would love to have someone else helping with the speculative fiction portal, and we can always use more work on getting the portal to be more robust. I think it may be more effective to do this than to create another portal. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 05:28, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Third Largest Economy

Every major news paper from the Seattle times to the New York times has declared China the 2nd Largest economy because of the 1st and 2nd quarter results. It would take a rise of 10 percent or more for Japan to overtake China in 2 quarters for China not to be the 2nd largest economy in both Nominal and Purchasing Power. One of the front page articles on Yahoo declared China the 2nd Largest economy in the world in Both Nominal and Purchasing power. Should be update this info, or are we going to wait until 2011 in March when the World bank compiles the info. That would seem a little late for information we already know. What do you guys think, should we update or wait. I know you and Oda Mari will be all over it, if you don't like what it states so you guys should discuss --Objectiveye (talk) 01:05, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Possible COPYVIO on protected Sea of Japan naming dispute

I was reviewing the recently added sources, and came upon a question. Do you know if official Japanese government publications are in the public domain, like U.S. government docs? If not, then we may have a problem; one part of what was just added is a verbatim copy of one of the sources, a pamphlet from The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The specific part I'm referring to in the article is the fourth paragraph of the argument section, starting from "the survey of historical maps conducted by South Korea..." and going to the end of the paragraph. That is a direct copy from the reference at the end of the paragraph: [2]. The copied paragraph is found on page 3, section 2.b. Whether or not it's a copyvio, I'll argue that we should change the wording (our own words are still usually better than copying public domain works), but if it must be a copyvio, I'll need you to take it out while the page is protected.Qwyrxian (talk) 05:25, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I just realized an easier solution for the moment might be just to put that part of the paragraph in quotation marks, at least while it remains protected. That way we aren't deleting information the other editor wants to include before discussing, but we at least avoid any potential Copy vio problems. Qwyrxian (talk) 05:39, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your closure of MZMcBride's RfA

My understanding of what MZMcBride said here is that he would like to see his RfA through to the end. Perhaps you should ask him? Thanks. Throwaway85 (talk) 05:21, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any reason we can't allow MZ to just withdraw his RFA? He's well respected and NOTNOW really doesn't apply in this situation. Thanks. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 05:23, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict)Further: I don't think NOTNOW was at all appropriate. It's an essay encouraging newbies to run when they have more experience. Hardly relevant. MZMcBride is more than experienced enough to dictate the closing time of their RfA. sonia 05:25, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I used it in the more literal sense. See below. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 05:30, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) In this case, there doesn't seem to be any productive reason for allowing the discussion to continue. At this point, it is extremely unlikely the discussion is going to swing back the other way enough to make any difference. I do think NOTNOW applies as it's possible that, given a good long while where he applies the comments and suggestions given there, he might be able to pass at some point in the future. Not now, however. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 05:29, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, fair enough. He has undone your closure so we might have to create some other rationale soon as sometimes neither of them fit. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 05:31, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I saw. I don't think that was a very wise action on his part, and only goes to validate the concerns raised by those opposing. Due to this action, I have now joined those opposing his candidacy. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 05:36, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

WP:BN is the place to discuss this; I've posted my thoughts here:Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard#Early closure of RfAs. Thanks. -- Avi (talk) 05:55, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Joe, can I ask if you are open to recall as a bureaucrat? Numerous recent actions of yours suggest to me that this role may not be suitable for you. In particular I see a trend to rush into a situation without full consideration. (This lack of confidence does not extend to other areas, where I believe you are an excellent editor.) — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:39, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Unbelievable. Joe's decision to close early was bold but excellent, as I'll explain on the crats notice board. FeydHuxtable (talk) 17:05, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
He's not in Category:Wikipedia bureaucrats open to recall. 67.136.117.132Also 174.52.141.13817:09, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Nearly a week and no response from Nihonjoe yet, so I'm going to ask again. Would you consider submitting yourself to a recall process to determine whether there is confidence in you continuing in your role as a bureaucrat? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:12, 31 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, your question got buried in the middle of this page. While some of my actions have been bold, I don't think any of them even come close to stepping over the line as far as abusing the tools. I see no reason to be open to recall, and I object to that process as it currently stands (as I've mentioned in multiple places). ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 15:24, 31 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to have occasioned this waste of your time, Joe: if I can never remember "blpunreferenced" then I should at least take the trouble to look it up.

So many articles here are so terrible. Uncontroverted edits

As you may recall, a recent comment alluded to my modest contributions at Ōei Invasion. The article's edit history here is clear. You may not know that I added two edits only:

  • diff 00:15, 17 September 2009 Tenmei m (15,386 bytes) (+ Nussbaum)
  • diff 00:41, 17 September 2009 Tenmei m (16,211 bytes) (+ Kang)
There were no bibliographic reference source citations before these additions.

The substance of the related text (with inline citation support) is narrow, factual, non-controversial. These diffs were unquestioned and unchanged in subsequent edits by 75.165.153.138, Pavel Vozenilek, Historiographer, 85.70.83.93, Kintetsubuffalo, Sennen goroshi, 59.16.129.180 and Colincbn.

These two non-contiguous data points allow no arguable inference to be drawn in this context nor any other. --Tenmei (talk) 05:34, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nihonjoe -- You may not have noticed that I relisted the projected move of Eulsa Treaty at WP:Requested moves#Current discussions/August 31. It is only prudent for me to alert all contributors in our discussion about changing the name of this article.

Please consider Talk:Eulsa Treaty#Relisting at WP:Requested moves.

On one hand, this can be construed as an unnecessary delay. On the other hand, this ensures the possibility of wider community input which may bring out any points-of-view which remain unstated or glossed over. --Tenmei (talk) 17:08, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Portal:Speculative fiction

I was hoping that OhanaUnited would reply more fully than he has done - I left him some questions on his talk page to which he hasn't responded, and his reply at the discussion didn't answer either all of your questions or all of mine. I would be delighted to close the nomination as "promote", again, but I really can't face OU popping up on my watchlist and reverting all of the steps again. So, unless Cirt does something or one of the other FPoC participants, you may have to wait until OU belatedly confirms that all is well. I'm sorry that your portal nomination has taken so long; this might be the catalyst for some improvements in the system, you never know! Regards, BencherliteTalk 17:42, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. I think the biggest problem is lack of participation from people. Featured portals do not appear on the main page (as far as I've been able to tell) so people don't seem to care about them much. Maybe we need to figure out a way to feature them on the main page? ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 17:45, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe a "This week's featured portal" section? ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 17:46, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I like the idea, but it seems impossible to make any changes to the main page layout / content. Lots of people seem to think that the main page should be changed, but they all pull in different directions! It could be a chicken and egg scenario as well: some would say that the older featured portals could do with improvements to bring them up to scratch, and so shouldn't be highlighted from the main page, to which others would say that highlighting them would lead to increased participation and improvements as a result... There's been discussion about including featured lists on the main page, but despite the vast increase in quality there over the last few years, there's no consensus for doing so - mainly because nobody can agree what, if anything, should be left out to compensate. E.g. there's a crowd that argues for "In The News" to go, as it duplicates (and overshadows) Wikinews; there's a crowd that says that "On This Day" should go, as it's unbalanced in terms of geographical and historical spread as well as linking to articles of less than the best quality. Anyway, to get back to FPoC, perhaps the answer is to add more names to the list of portal directors so that the ever-busy Cirt and Ohana aren't left to do everything, and so that patient nominators like you don't have to wait for weeks for a no-brainer close to be done! BencherliteTalk 17:55, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I can totally agree on the complete committee standstill which exists for the main page. I don't know that anything needs to go, per se, but it could definitely use some slight restructuring to make things more balanced. I also agree that having more "directors" would help things move along faster. We should nominate you, since you brought it up. :) ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 18:03, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I liked the "quick links" section so much that I've added it to the portal that I'm building... but I changed most of the icons to try and hide the source of my inspiration from the casual reader! BencherliteTalk 19:20, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I did that because this portal has so many sections in it and I wanted people to be able to easily find what they were looking for. Which portal are you building? ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 19:29, 1 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No, I went through every page before deleting them and there was nothing at all useful in that portal. It only had enough information to make it appear like the portal had content. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 00:59, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

changing username melocotones to michellecotton

I just realised that you sent me a message querying if I wanted my username in capitals, sorry I thought I might hear by email and have only just found this forum, I'm just figuring out how Wikipedia works.

Please can it be all lowercase as you suggest. Sincere apologies for the error, I hope that this is OK? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Melocotones (talkcontribs) 16:16, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This has already been done, but in all caps. You need to logout of your Melocotones username and login to your MICHELLECOTTON. If you want all lowercase, you need to request another username change at WP:CHUS from MICHELLECOTTON to Michellecotton. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 04:43, 3 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Could you do me a favor? I'm still working on a new draft of the page (ideally that will be able to get consensus as a neutral version...although I know that's hoping a lot). However, when I started on the draft, I didn't copy the whole thing to my userspace--only the first part. Since I want to be able to work on the rest of the article at the same time, including on the sources, can you copy and paste the whole thing (the raw text) into my userspace? I created a page, User:Qwyrxian/Original Japan Sea naming dispute for the full "original" text to go. Thanks for the help. Qwyrxian (talk) 06:54, 6 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Koi Article

I was wondering if you could take the time to look at the Koi article and its recent revisions. Recently a version was altered by an established user with the claim that it was vandalism. Yet, all material was sourced, factual, and relevent. In scanning through the prior history, of this article, I also noticed that this user, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Lawrencekhoo, has been insistent that he would not allow others to make edits that updated his. Although others have attempted good faith, factual, sourced edits and have taken it to the talk pages, he has refused to utilize the talk pages first. He has been reverting everything back to the way he wants it without using the talk pages. He has accused others of edit-warring and violating the three revert rule, even though he has reciprocated the exact same behavior.

I also feel that there is a personal bias on his part and a lack of NPOV from him. Based on his user name, he appears to be Chinese American. His edits, coincidentally seem to slant this article with much irrelevant information as to suggest a much higher Chinese influence. His revisions have animal 'Family' level information when it is an article based on the 'Species' level. His revisions also have a lot of information related to a completely separate species. He seems to have been able to get away with what appear to be violations of good faith editing, simply because he has been editing for a while. A look at his edit history on a number of articles though, suggests that he oftentimes abuses his 'seniority' on wikipedia as a means to block others from editing articles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 148.78.243.111 (talk) 05:59, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest bringing up your concerns at the relevant WIkiProject where those more familiar with this sort of thing can review the information. I am not really that familiar with koi (outside of seeing them and feeding them), so I am probably not the best person to review edits for accuracy on this topic. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 15:27, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New userbox for which prefectures you've visited

I have made new userbox {{User:UBX/JP47}} which shows an admittedly-cartoony map of which of the 47 prefectures a user has visited. It's not easy to squeeze Japan into a userbox. Since you are active in WikiProject Japan, and I originally got the how-many-prefectures userbox code from your page, I thought I'd ask if you had any comments. Thanks! Example: {{User:UBX/JP47|12|13}} gives:

This user has visited 2 of the 47 prefectures.

Sockpuppet user

You just deleted the user User:Garydubh based on a privacy request. Did you realise that this is a sockpuppet master account (see Category:Wikipedia sockpuppets of Garydubh and deleting his account hides this fact, and his edits from regular readers? People may not know where to look for other records of this editor's actions like Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Garydubh/Archive. Is this a usual for such an editor? We should be able to see who made his edits. Where did he make this request? I would certainly have disputed any deletion of his account for the reasons stated above. Drop me a talkback when you reply. Thanks ww2censor (talk) 16:18, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that, but because I am not an OTRS volunteer so I can't see the request. Whatever he says or claims, based on his editing history, I would be very sceptical of any statements made by this editor. ww2censor (talk) 00:52, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi joe, the edits from the anonymous IP user seems to go for meaningless competition for name ordering. Food/drink task force?

Hey there. I was just looking at Category:WikiProject Japan Food and drink task force and I'm noticing that it's rather sparse. For example, Talk:Udon is listed as being in that cat, but if you go to the cat page it's not there. I know it takes awhile to propagate, but I modified that talk page more than three days ago. I've tried purging both pages to no success. Any ideas? — HelloAnnyong (say whaaat?!) 01:24, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would just give it some time and keep tagging articles. You can also try removing the task force and then adding it back. That might do it. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WikiProject Japan! 01:26, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
