Bluewater Island is a new development project to be built off the Jumeirah Beach Residence coastline, near Dubai Marina, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The project was approved and unveiled by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai on February 13, 2013.[2][4] The development will be built on reclaimed land off the Jumeirah Beach coastline by Meraas Holding, and will cost AED 6 Billion (1.6 billion USD).[5] The construction work on Bluewater Island begins on May 21, 2013.[6]
Dubai Eye
Bluewater Island will feature the Dubai Eye, a 210-metre (689 ft) tall Ferris wheel that will provide views of Dubai Marina and landmarks such as Burj Al Arab, Palm Jumeirah, and Burj Khalifa.[2]
Design and construction are to be undertaken by Hyundai Contracting and Starneth Engineering.[7] Construction was originally due to begin in June 2013.[8] If completed, it will be taller than the current world's tallest Ferris wheel, the 165-metre (541 ft) Singapore Flyer.
The Dubai Eye will be 19.5 metres (64 ft) taller than the 190.5-metre (625 ft) New York Wheel wheel planned for Staten Island, overlooking New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty, which is scheduled to open on 31 December 2015.[9][10]
The base of the wheel will serve as an entertainment zone, and a large LED screen will be mounted on the wheel creating an electronic platform for broadcasting, advertisements, and other information.[2]
Other attractions and entertainment zones are to include retail, residential, and hospitality zones. The project is forecast to attract more than three million visitors annually.[2][4]
