Israel is currently competing at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August 2016. This is the nation's sixteenth appearance at the Summer Olympics. Israel sent 47 athletes to the games, breaking the previous record of 43 in 2008,[1] and also setting a new record in participation with athletes competing in 17 different sports at 53 different events.[2][3] The 2016 games is also the first Israeli delegation to feature more female competitors than men.

In July 2016, Miri Regev, the Minister of Culture and Sport, announced that she would not participate in the opening ceremonies, because they take place on Shabbat.[4]

On 3 August, two days prior to the start of the Olympics, the International Olympic Committee officially honored the eleven Israelis killed during the Munich massacre, for the first time.[5][6]

In addition to the 47 Israeli athletes, there are seven Jewish athletes representing the United States at the 2016 Summer Olympics,[7] which are Aly Raisman,[8] Nate Ebner,[9] Anthony Ervin,[10] Merrill Moses,[11] Eli Dershwitz,[12] Monica Rokhman,[13] and Zack Test.[14] Additionally, judoka Alice Schlesinger competed for Great Britain at the 2016 Summer Olympics, after having competed for Israel previously.[15]

Prior to the Olympics, Facebook allowed users to add the Olympic logo and the team flag to their profile pictures, however Israel was not included on this list.[16][17] The flag was later added to the list, however was not listed alphabetically, and was included at the end of the list.[18]

Prior to the opening ceremony, the Lebanese delegation was assigned to ride on the same bus as the Israeli delegation.[19] The head of the Lebanese team, Salim al-Haj Nicolas, admitted that he demanded that the bus door be closed on the Israeli team, and that the Lebanese demanded that the Israeli athletes not board the bus. Udi Gal, an Israeli Olympic sailor, said his team ultimately decided to travel separately to avoid an "international and physical incident" but added "How could they let this happen on the eve of the Olympic Games? Isn't this the opposite of what the Olympics represents?"[20]

Saudi Arbian judoka, Joud Fahmy, forfeited her match in order to avoid competing against Gili Cohen.[21]
