Fair Use Images

Hi again :) The three images that I used in the article "Adelle Davis" are no longer there. I guess I violated someone's rules, lol. Just don't know why. Anyway, If you could help me understand, I'd appreciate it. --RogerK 05:17, 13 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again hon :). Guess I jumped the gun, they ARE there, lol. But they were all missing last night. Oh well . . .
I thought my comments under each picture WAS the "fair use rationale", but obviously I'm wrong; thanks for adding them correctly.
I guess my aim in all the editing I do is to help bring an article to FA status. The first article that I concentrated on became a FA, and it was very rewarding, a feeling of accomplishment. It's a shame that FA's are not locked. At any rate, I hope that the "Adelle Davis" article gets there someday, but there is more research to be done, and I have little time to spare.
Smooches hon, you're a sweetheart :)). --RogerK 00:20, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

On a totally unrelated topic to photos, your current message at the top of this talk page doesn't help people to "post new messages at the bottom of my talk page. Please use headlines when starting new talk topics." I see it is from a template. So maybe I'll make the comments there too. My point was going to be that at the top of my talk page I use

Thanks, Pfctdayelise

Hi Pfctdayelise, I was just surprised to see that what I thought I posted here last January 13 is not here. Something might have happened: it was not saved by the machine or I might not have saved it in my rush.

Anyway, here is more or less what I was supposed to have posted.

First, thank you so much for your kindness, Pfctdayelise, even though I can't seem to be able to pronounce your name.

The first photos I placed were disapproved by some Wikipedia official. I was a newbie. I used my own name and he wanted to see concrete correspondence with the legal owner of the photos, even though as I state in my user page I was given permission by the Opus Dei prelature. Anyway, that's water under the bridge.

Yes, please help me transfer some photos. You can transfer the ones in the bottom of the Opus Dei article: Official Escriva photo, Kinal, Fontan, Condoray, IESE, statue.

I can take care of the rest. I've been transferring the photos into the Spanish version: [1]

Then later I'd be transferring them as well to the those of the other languages.

Many thanks, Pfctdayelise. I'll make sure I save this this time. Walter Ching 02:55, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for the welcome

I appreciate being welcomed. I am wondering why the article I edited has been comlpetely changed. Even my references were deleted. What is that about? I worked pretty hard on that.. and the person who changed it didn't even leave their name or a reason. Anne 15:52, 17 January 2006 (UTC)Anne[reply]

Thanks for looking at the article and reverting it. I am wondering if it should still be called a stub, and if not, how do I remove the "stub" tag. Also, I would like to write about another author. Do I need permission? I have searched extensively and have not found any articles about her. Thanks again, this is great fun. Anne 22:18, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re 'As of' on Esplanade Hotel

Hello, yes I did make that edit intentionally, as per Wikipedia:As of. The sentence contained figures that may date, so I updated it because it's on-going, not in spite of it. If I've misunderstood the purpose of the 'As of' redirect, please let me know. mordemur 11:17, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I understand your point and I do think it's quite valid. Arguably, "as of" should not be used without some indication of when the subject status quo came about. I agree that this is a grammatical subtlety that Wikipedia:As of does not address. mordemur 13:53, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much!

I just wanted to say "Thank You" for your help in letting me know what I can do with people who try to resubmit images that have been deleted here by submitting them to Commons instead. Much appreciated. Maybe one of these days I finally will get off of my **** and take some photos of some of the places in northeast Illinois that I CAN upload to Commons and allow others to use in place of the ones I've chased off of here. ;) --JohnDBuell 22:10, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And if I'm not mistaken, every image the guy uploaded onto commons and attempted to insert into an en: article were ALL copyvios (at least on commons, since we have a bit more leeway with fair use, but not much; there was a high school logo that I think they (the high school) would have been fine with having on here, but {{logo}} doesn't exist on commons).... --JohnDBuell 02:46, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there — they definitely are notable due to being a professional Football League side, and having merged into Rotherham United F.C., although you're right in saying the article doesn't really explain all that at the moment. You need to be careful with {{db}} tags though - really, {{db-club}} should be saved for unverifiable kids' garage bands and the like. Anyway, I'll give it a bit of expansion, or possibly propose merger with the Rotherham United article. — sjorford (talk) 09:14, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've reduced it to semi-protection. That template is used on thousands of pages, so some protection should remain, but I agree full protection is not required. - SimonP 15:32, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You

Thanks for your input. I do not think it is irrelevent at all - I brought up the issue! Unfortunately, I hadn't yet read the MOS when I did so. It makes perfect sense, and I was unaware of this particular difference between American and British written English; I thought it was a universal rule. So, I take this incident as my first Wikipedia lesson on the varieties of life. Thanks again. paragon 04:48, 21 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All my resources on convicts are Western Australian. Unfortunately the WA convict era and the Eastern colonies' convict era don't overlap, so they are rarely covered in the same books. Unfortunately, I know nothing of Thompson.

Where do I create it, and how do I save it. I understand the template part of it, but in what space is it supposed to be created and saved? Hi:

Thanks very much for reformatting the page and putting in the headings and Table of Contents box. Can you explain to me how I might have done those things?

All the material I placed on the Qichun page is my own work. Nothing has been cut-n-paste but has been rewritten and edited in numerous ways. I am aware of copyright laws. I will clean up the History and other sections to break it into paragraphs.

I also need your help please on photos. I have visited Qichun and I have several Photos that I would like to add to the page to make it more interesting. I would like to upload these to the Commons area, but I can't figure out how to do that. Plus, when I go to Commons it asks me to log in, even though I went there for Wikipedia. I am confused.

Thanks again for your help.

Cheers! Frank

Tallest tree ever

Concerning your recently created article Thorpdale, Victoria, you state the town had a tree measuring 114 m, this would be higher than the Dyerville Giant which is stated by the Sequoia article to be the highest ever measured. I don't know who is right, if you have a source you can change the Sequoia article. I've posted on the talk pages too. Piet 10:26, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

Hi, thanks for your voting on my RFA. It has finished with the result 88/14/9, and I am promoted. I am really overwhelmed with the amount of support I have got. With some of you we have edited many articles as a team, with some I had bitter arguments in the past, some of you I consider to be living legends of Wikipedia and some nicks I in my ignorance never heard before. I love you all and I am really grateful to you.

If you feel I can help you or Wikipedia as a human, as an editor or with my newly acquired cleaning tools, then just ask and I will be happy to assist. If you will feel that I do not live up to your expectation and renegade on my promises, please contact me. Maybe it was not a malice but just ignorance or a short temper. Thank you very mach, once more! abakharev 07:34, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

FAC maybe?

Hi again :) Would you check out 12 Angry Men and let me know what you think? Thanx pfc you make my day lol :)) love you smoooooch. Casablanca was, obviously, a major film effort. However, 12 Angry Men was a small-scale production. Controversies in Australian History

Hey, did you see the lecture today? I think I saw you there, have you cut your hair since last year? Anyway, you might have noticed that the wording of the middle part of the lecture was basically taken straight from my work at Myall Creek massacre! I was pleased, but it was also kinda weird hearing a professional reading my stuff. I guess now we can make as many copies of the lecture as we want, since it's GFDL licenced. --bainer (talk) 12:02, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't realise at first, until part of the way through when she was talking about the guy riding 250 miles across the Liverpool Plains, I recognised some of my phrasing. I started grinning in the middle of it, until I thought that people might see me, and it's really not an appropriate subject to be grinning about :) My tute is on at 2, after the lecture. I have her for my tute aswell, although I didn't want to say anything since I thought it might embarrass her in front of the other students. You can say something though - I wonder what she'll say! --bainer (talk) 12:25, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thorpdale, Victoria tree

Hi Pfctdayelise - basically because no tree measurement done without a combination of climbing and multiple laser measurement can be trusted - that is the clear conclusion of the ENTS; they have found that all old (i.e., pre-laser rangefinder) measurements are very unreliable, whatever the reported accuracy, and best treated with considerable scepticism. - MPF 09:23, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion request

Hi, thanks for your answer! I have replaced the image with a different image, but the old image is still in the archive. I'd be grateful if you could delete it from the archive if that's technically possible. If you want a good legal reason besides just doing me a favor, consider this: I uploaded the original image with the GFDL-self license, but I was the subject of the photograph, not the photographer. As far as I know, a photograph of a person is the intellectual property of the photographer, not the person photographed, so I was not entitled to release it under that license. I never even asked the photographer's permission. (The new image under the title Image:Sunglass.jpg, however, is a photograph I made myself.) Angr/talk 09:27, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I would have, but I didn't have another one like that, or one that matched the title Sunglass. (If anyone asks, I can say it's sunny in the picture, and there's glass in the lighthouse.) Angr/talk 07:22, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

bot edits

If you would prefer to have redlinks in your archives, feel free to revert. Consensus on RFD is to delete the "Village Pump" cross-namespace redirect. I thought it would be a courtesy to update any pages using it so that the links are still usable. I feel that the usability of this particular link is more important than most as its primary audience is new or inexperienced users, and from watching the bot edits thusfar, it appears that is who most of the pages using this link belong to. I'm almost done, so bear with me. — Mar. 27, '06 [10:23] <freakofnurxture|talk>

You might be right about that. On the other hand there's still the Help button on the left of the screen, and the Help:Contents page does link to Wikipedia:Village pump. Maybe not prominently enough? I don't know. — Mar. 27, '06 [10:52] <freakofnurxture|talk>

{{hidden}} template parameters — MSchmahl 17:34, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was experimenting some more with the {{hidden}} template, and discovered that a parameter in the template like {{{foo|bar}}} returns "bar" if foo is undefined, but the contents of foo if foo is defined. I.e. bar is a default for parameter foo. Perhaps you already knew this. But this way, you can avoid the centering. I suppose a similar thing can be done with font-weight (?). Hi. We met at the meetup in February; it's nice to see you again, especially since your user page answers a question I had: do women play aussie rules? I saw it being played on the telly last week and it actually seems quite fun, though of course it does not bear comparison with the real football ;) Anyway, I saw you ask on Wikipedia:WikiProject User Scripts for tools to help on commons:, and I wondered whether anybody had offered you help. Georgian wiki

Hey, thanks for your comment on my post at village:pump. I checked those sites but none of them have ka (georgian) mirror. The crisis has been ongoing since a few months now and, out of frustration, I stopped contributing entirely on that site since the begining of this month. Ironically, we were only two users contributing on almost a daily basis (me and the subject admin), a few others check in randomly. That's very small number. The problem is, whenever there is a disagreement, there is no third voice, so we fall into a trap of endless exchanges that lead to nothing. I tried to contact, left notes, etc., for other three registered admins (of that language: ka:user:Malafaya, ka:user:Island, ka:user:Sopho, they speak English), who are rarely to be seen since December'05; in vain, no one responded. My contributions are mainly new articles (there are only 6000+ articles there yet), which I translate from several languages, English and French wikis mainly, occasionally Russian, verifying with resources from my univ. library. I would rather write my articles, then complain though; but if I write to one of the English speaking stewards, would they be able to help? But then, it's kind of a dilemma, to solve the problem of no quorum we need more local language moderators. eh, sorry for this lenghly monologue, would appreciate if you'd find some time to tell me more on what can we possibly do in this situation. Cheers. Alsandro 14:26, 4 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I uploaded this image, (LOUNG21A.jpg), which can be found on zillions of websites. It's been attributed to Per Bang-Jensen. So I included the template (Copyrighted Free Use Provided That the copyright holder - Per Bang-Jensen - is credited).

Figured that THAT would suffice, Now I get, from a bot, that there is no source info. Does this mean I need to include a URL? and if so, should it be included in the template, or an augmentary statement? This is rudimentary for most of the Wikipedians, I'm sure, and I guess I can figure it out. But you're sunshine in the rain, and I'm lookin' for your help again, lol. Gonna put this up for peer review soon. Have a look, please? --RogerK 19:31, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help. If I've offended you, please accept my apologies. --RogerK 02:53, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Greetings again. Requested peer review for this article. If you have time, would you please review it? Thanks again for your expertise. --RogerK 05:57, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for comments regarding Diode modelling

Hi pfctdayelise!

Thanks for your comments regarding the article I wrote called Diode modelling. Please excuse the very long delay between you posting your message and me replying. As this is the first time for me to contribute to the Wikipedia I wasn't expecting much feedback on the article and so did not check my User Talk Page. I now realise that it is important for me to do so! What's more, I had trouble logging in for months: I didn't realise that usernames had to be case sensitive!

I would be grateful for help on the images. Feel free to edit the page or to contact me. I will be checking my talk page more often!

WelcomeBot

The source code of every line in a log has a peculiar format, like every other line of the same log.

That's how we do to look at Special:Newpages (the lines with # are comments):

while True:
            #this sets the path to the newpages address and gets the html source
            path = self.newpages_address()
            get_throttle()
            html = self.getUrl(path)

            #this is the regex we match with
            entryR = re.compile('<li>(?P<date>.+?) <a href=".+?" title="(?P<title>.+?)">.+?</a> \((?P<length>\d+)(.+?)\) \. \. (?P<loggedin><a href=".+?" title=".+?">)?(?P<username>.+?)(</a>)?( <em>\((?P<comment>.+?)\)</em>)?</li>')

            #then we match it to the source code of the log, using the groups in the regex to distinguish what field was matched
            for m in entryR.finditer(html):
                date = m.group('date')
                title = m.group('title')
                title = title.replace('"', '"')
                length = int(m.group('length'))
                loggedIn = (m.group('loggedin') is not None)
                username = m.group('username')
                comment = m.group('comment')

Note that the log pattern the regex matches is (with variables in CAPS):

<li>DATE ‎<a href="/wiki/CREATED_PAGE" title="CREATED_PAGE">CREATED_PAGE</a> ‎(BYTE_NUMBER bytes) . . ‎<a href="/wiki/User:CREATOR" title="User:CREATOR">CREATOR</a>‎ (<a href="/wiki/User_talk:CREATOR" title="User talk:CREATOR">Talk</a> | <a href="/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&target=CREATOR" title="Special:Contributions">contribs</a>)‎</li>

We need to analyze how it's done and make it match this log pattern, which is a lot simpler as the only variables are DATE and USERNAME:

<li>DATE <a href="/w/index.php?title=User:USERNAME&action=edit" class="new" title="User:USERNAME">USERNAME</a> New user <span class='comment'>(<a href="/w/index.php?title=User_talk:USERNAME&action=edit" class="new" title="User talk:USERNAME">Talk</a> | <a href="/wiki/Special:Contributions/USERNAME" title="Special:Contributions/USERNAME">contribs</a> | <a href="/wiki/Special:Blockip/USERNAME" title="Special:Blockip/USERNAME">block</a>)</span> </li>

Note that, if the user page has already been created, it will appear simply as a href="/wiki/User:USERNAME" instead of a href="/w/index.php?title=User:USERNAME&action=edit" class="new"

Also, if the talk page is already created, it will too appear as a href="/wiki/User_talk:USERNAME (note the missing class="new" on both!).</nowiki>

I wrote a bit too much but this should be an incredibly simple task for one that knows regexes well. Fetofs Hello! 15:45, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

software

Hi Pfctdayelise, I think that Adobe Illustrator is the best program to make maps, although I mostly use Corel Painter just because I am more familiar with it. Also, GIMP and Inkscape are good if youre looking for a free program. But I think the more of these programs to have the better since every design program has something which they do thats better than the others. There is a wikiproject Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps you might like to join --Astrokey44 12:03, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Uyghur

Hey there! I recommend learning the Arabic script for Uyghur first, since essentially no one uses the Pinyin based or the Cyrillic based scripts. The nice thing about learning Uyghur Arabic is that it's much easier than real Arabic, yet will give you experience with how true Arabic script works. As for learning Uyghur, the best way to learn is to have a good grammar, a good dictionary, and some other way to practice it (like a native speaker or a webpage you want to read). You're lucky, the image was uploaded 3 months ago! =) The URL is here (nice coat of arms, don't you think? =P ) and the website explicitly states that the reproduction of images is authorized if the source is acknowledged. (Se autoriza la reproducción de materiales de este sitio, señalando su fuente original.) Hope this helps! =) --Nkcs 03:06, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I know, but I was still a newbie when I uploaded the image =) Thanks for adding the source info btw! The website is located here. Cheers! =) --Nkcs 03:55, 6 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Greek translation

Hi; unfortunately my Greek is mostly conversational (I'm Greek-American), so I don't know how to translate some more technical terms. For example, I don't know the Greek equivalent for "fair use". If you can't find anyone else I can try to track it down, but it might work better if you could find someone actually from Greece. --Delirium 15:19, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My wiki picture contributions

Hi. :) You remind me a lot of a friend of mine, actually! As for my contributions, they've all been uploaded to Commons so if you look for my contributions there, they'll all be my pictures. ([7]). Apologies for not organising them into a proper gallery... one day! Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 15:02, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WIKIBREAK :(

Mountain Lion picture

thanks for asking about this. I was the uploader, and I did reduce the resolution, to save space - way back then in 2004, Wiki tended not to like great big picture files. If you have a need for the full scale version, let me know and I'll upload it instead. seglea 17:22, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ah, I see now why you were puzzled about the uploader - another user had put it on Commons from the English wiki. I have now uploaded the full res version onto Commons and deleted the version on the English wiki. Glad to hear it's being used. seglea 21:06, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Drones

Thanks for the message, Pfctdayelise. Actually the hyperbolic content was not put in by me - it was already there before I edited the article, but i wasn't sure how to go about it. I also questioned the use of somewhat biased press release material. Basically I think The Drones deserved a much better article than the one they had, so i did my best to improve it. Obviously it still needs a lot of work, but I think I've got the ball rolling. Feel free to take out the content that you feel is inappropriate - I'll fill in the blanks down the track. Cheers.

This edit suggests that you may think that our meetup was last Tuesday, while it is in fact the coming Tuesday. Probably you're not thinking anything of the sort, but just in case … -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 04:41, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Cleanup" of talk page

My apologies. I merely saw an error and fixed it, and foolishly paid no attention to the article to which the "mistake" belonged. I'm a bit new with the software and didn't take the time I should have with the edit I made; I didn't mean to. Ben Tibbetts 03:27, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,Your question about - Would anyone be able to tell me if this person is Tamil or Sinhalese and perhaps anything about the significance of the dress? Thanks, pfctdayelise (translate?) 15:52, 14 July 2006 (UTC). i dont think you were given the correct answer for this. But if your interested to find out about the costume given below are some links.

This is not that costume which was traditionally worn by high nobility. This is the costume of a Sri lankan-kandiyan "classical dancer”. This hat has spicks and the ears are covered. All these jewelry represents something check it out Classical Dancer. --TCWales 23:23, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The costume that is worn by the groom for a wedding or the high nobility Sinhala those days is called the “Nilame costume”, which is all covered up and very heavy. That hat does not have spikes on it neither a lot of jewelry like the kandiyan dancers costume. The Kandyan style" wedding ceremony costume looks like this "Kandyan style" wedding ceremony which is also known as the "Nilame costume". Nilame Costume--TCWales 23:23, 17 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question about locator dots on maps

Hi - Have you noticed the question I posted at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Maps#Locator dots? I'd really like to hear from some of the map "regulars" about this. The image was uploaded by Longhair- like many of his images it had no copyright info or source. Unless it has been knocked down the argument for fair use is very weak for this kind of photo - especially when no copyright details have been provided.--Peta 00:17, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pfctdayelise!
Sorry, that's all I can offer - that's the shot I composed. Sorry for the censorship! I just thought it was more tasteful (particularly as I was on a school camp and the photos would be plastered all on the server for immature Yr 8's to draw the wrong conclusions ;-) and still demonstrated the subject. --Fir0002 12:11, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mighty Big Crime/16 Tons

Hi pfctdayelise,

Just a quick note to say if you give me your email address, I can send you a scan of the Virgin released 1987 Mighty Big Crime cassette single of 16 Tons (catalogue number VOZC 026) to prove that it is indeed the FIRST Oz hip hop release. The fact that no one on the internet knows it besides myspace, plus the fact that it is a crap single doesn't change the fact that it is indeed the first one.

Just for backup, I emailed the Hilltop Hoods and Suffa assures me that he remembers them too - and like me is not really a fan. An embarassing Beastie Boys clone they may have been, but they were first. Isn't the intention of Wikipedia to be thorough and accurate?

Thanks for your consideration. Keep up the good work you do here, just please help report the facts.

Thanks,

Corey coreyj29@hotmail.com
