James A. Clark Jr.

I am the daughter of James Clark Jr. You have him listed as James A. Clark Jr.

I have corrected the contents and references, but can't change the title of the article, my father's name.

Please make the correction.

Thank you. Martha Clark — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.121.222.88 (talk) 01:33, 4 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request the change at Talk: James A. Clark Jr., with a reliable source. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:43, 4 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Robert McClenon a check of the article shows that from the start there has never been a source for the middle initial. As near as I can tell none of the references are verifiable online but the obituary makes no mention of a middle initial. I am not sure what the procedure for investigating this further is, but a page move may be reasonable. I will post all of this on the talk page for the article and see if anyone else responds. auto-sign

What am I doing wrong? I have been a contributor/editor for 5 years and always signed with 4 tildes. But now the 4 tildes come back as my name but not in blue (link) and followed by "Preceding unsigned comment added by Robotics1 (talk • contribs)". But it /was/ signed. Same happens if I use the 4-tilde icon. Am I having a brain fade? I know I'm being stupid - can anyone help?

Pokemon Go - List of Internet phenomena

Is some one who can moved relevent informations from Pogemon Go to List of Intrenet phenomena ? I can't do it because I don't know I have to chosed original authors and I am not native English speaker. Dawid2009 (talk) 14:53, 4 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dawid2009. I'm wondering if Pokémon Go fits the topical scope for listing in List of Internet phenomena. Isn't Pokémon Go primarily a game application for mobile phones, in the same vein as Candy Crush? Looking at List of Internet phenomena, it doesn't seem to cover that class of subject – I would think because while you do download it from the Internet, it is not at heart an "Internet phenomenon". Am I wrong?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:30, 4 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Unless I'm mistaken, it is not up to Wikipedia editors to decide what is, or is not, an "internet phenomenon". There are plenty of reliable sources that describe Pokémon Go as a phenomenon, but a cursory search doesn't verify it as an internet phenomenon, (although discussions might be all the buzz in the twitterverse). Frankly, without such a source, the inclusion should be removed. 2606:A000:4C0C:E200:E9E9:D9F4:2146:70D4 (talk) 00:33, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
What inclusion? The question is about including it, where it's not now. Of course it's up to us to decide what belongs in the topical scope of a list article – or for that matter, the content of any article at all. If it wasn't we could add nothing, sort of like a Zeno's Paradox for article content.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:07, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Cite errors/Sicario 2015 Film)(section) /How Do I get the nominations Right???

Hey everybody...in a bit of a cinephile pickle here.I was listing the many noms and few wins the movie Sicario has gotten, which aren´t displayed hereonWikipedia.org...since it says Complete list of accolades. But I don´t get it. My only source is Sicario-Awards.IMDb.Com so I wrote that with </ref>as bookends,in several different forms....I then started Critic award for critic award but....if I leave in the ref Sicario ref part...the letters don´t appear in blue but that´s a minor quibble.

No,it says-A </ref>is missing the closing }}</ref>.IF I do Not mention any references or qoutes,it displays the nominess, categorys and results BUT...It leaves out the Award organiation like Central Ohio or Las Vegas Film Critics etc so it all becomes skewed. Hence, the nommed category is placed where the Award association Should be and the nominee is where the nomination/Award should be etc...

Could someone be so kind as to fill me in on how to simplest manage this problem...Would really appreciate it.

And sure,I see many nominations are from the day the noms were released, referring to big nwspapers etc...I solely use IMDB.com as my source....Hope that´s not a problem, I have doublechecked facts and there are about 25 nominations atleast I would like to add.

What the error message says is "Cite error: A (see the help page).", and the words "help page" are in blue to indicate that they are a wikilink, in this case to Help:Cite errors/Cite error included ref. --David Biddulph (talk) 15:08, 4 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Do plot summaries need inline citations?

As per MOS:PLOT: "The plot summary for a work, on a page about that work, does not need to be sourced with in-line citations, as it is generally assumed that the work itself is the primary source for the plot summary. However, editors are encouraged to add sourcing if possible. If a plot summary includes a direct quote from the work, this must be cited using inline citations per WP:QUOTE." A user is requesting inline citations for plot summary at Bodyguard (2011 Hindi film) and citing WP:QUOTE as his reason. I don't think WP:QUOTE applies here as there aren't any direct quotes from the work. Need confirmation from expert users, before I can revert again. Thanks.- Managerarc talk 11:25, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Plot summaries don't need citations. Only direct quotes (for example, a statement of an actor from the movie) need to be sourced. (I have reverted the said edit). At the same time, the moment some editor might claim that the said plot summary does not represent the true 'picture', you may need to provide reliable sources to back up challenged claims. Thanks. I made a few edits to List of deaths in rock and roll today, because I noticed some of the names included were not rock musicians. Then I peeked at the talk page and noticed that the debate over inclusion criteria has been lengthy and without consensus. What is the more formal method to reach a consensus? Would it involve a proposal placed onto it's own page? I'm not exactly sure how to start this. Thanks! Magnolia677 (talk) 13:13, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Presuming that you have already read Consensus, and presuming that by "more formal method", you mean something beyond just discussing with the editors on the talk page of the article, you could give a quick read to rfc (could turn out to be a cannon to sort out a simple issue) and to dr (could turn out to be a solution that seeks out a new problem). Template Use Tool

Hi, I'm a regular contributor and I'm looking for a tool that will tell me the exact pages where certain templates are used. I have looked but can't find anything like this, does it exist or am I on a wild goose chase? JDWFC (talk) 15:09, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! Can't believe I hadn't spotted it - exactly what I was looking for. JDWFC (talk) 15:16, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
JDWFC, while David's answer is right, the actual link is Special:WhatLinksHere. You can go to that page and back trace any page. Lourdes 15:58, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
But the easiest way is usually to start on the page you want to back trace, and then click "What links here" in the Tools menu as David said. Then you don't have to navigate to Special:WhatLinksHere and fill out Page field. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:03, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Your draft was reviewed unusually quickly. But as it consisted of two (or maybe three, or even four) proposed articles, all shovelled together into one draft, it/they were rejected. I suggest you pick just one subject for now, work on improving the referencing, noting the need for independent sources, and submit that. Maproom (talk) 21:27, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Letters written by professionals

Sources for what? Ruslik_Zero 20:33, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If they have been published by a reliable organ, probably yes (though they might be primary sources, with the limitations that that implies). If they are unpublished, or privately published (eg posted on some random website, or probably even on the writer's own website), then no: unpublished materials can never be used as sources, Kentansg. --ColinFine (talk) 20:37, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Article deleted

Hello I created a norwegian article about a band, coming out with a new album soon, and the band has also had great contacts with other norwegian bands. For some reason when I was editing it, I got the news it was deleted, and that the reason was for A7, that it had no importance. Which I find not true at all. As the band is giving out their first album shortly and also for all the info and special things the band has done. Its called "Resistansen". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Theelfe (talkcontribs) 20:46, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, it seems that a band that has not yet released any significant recordings may well not be sufficiently notable to warrant a Wikipedia article. Please see WP:NBAND for more information (in respect of the English Wikipedia). If you created an article at the Norwegian Wiki, standards may be different and you could ask at the help-desk there. Eagleash (talk) 21:08, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) The wording of A7 is "... does not credibly indicate the importance or significance of the subject". It is possible, therefore, that the band does justify an article, but that you did not include the justification in terms of the references to published reliable sources independent of the subject. The guidance for notability for bands is at WP:MUSIC. It is, of course possible that the band does not yet meet the requirements but that they will do so in the future. You say that you created a "Norwegian article". If the article was written in Norwegian it does not belong here in the English Wikipedia; you received advice on your user talk page. --David Biddulph (talk) 21:11, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The advice that you were given on your talk page said that your submission (which has since been deleted) was not in English. You may submit the article to the Norwegian Wikipedia, but, as mentioned above, they may have their own significance or notability requirements. See WP:UPANDCOMING and WP:TOOSOON about bands (and other subjects) that have not yet received significant coverage. Robert McClenon (talk) 21:19, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

is there any tool or userscript for adding a link to itself to all template on the page?(not editing, only visible to the user) most template except navi lacks V,T,E linksPanintelize (talk) 06:23, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Panintelize, while your question is quite unclear, if your query is about how to inform the user of a particular page about WP:V, WP:T and WP:E, without actually writing it inside the said article, you could see WP:Page notice for something similar to what you might be asking. If this is not what you're looking for, then do explain your query better. Thanks. Lourdes 06:39, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the unclear description. What I'm trying to find is a plug-in, when activated, displays a link to the template, for all templates on the page. for example: abcd -> abcd,Template:abcd. preferably in the same style as navigation templates:abcd (V,T) -Panintelize (talk) 07:57, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again. I've pinged PrimeHunter who is much better at answering such queries. You could check out Wikipedia:User scripts till then. Thanks. Lourdes 10:18, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Panintelize: If you click the Edit tab (for source editing) then the bottom of the window has an alphabetic list of all used templates and other transcluded pages at "Pages transcluded onto the current version of this page". You may have to click a triangle to expand the list. If you cannot edit the page then click the "View source" tab instead. "Show preview" gives a similar list for templates used in the preview. "Page information" under "Tools" in the left pane also gives a list of used templates, but it shows at most 50. I don't know a tool that will display a link on a rendered page in the place a template is used, and I think such a tool would be nearly impossible. When editing with the wikEd editor, template names are displayed in purple and you can Ctrl-click them to open the template page in a new tab. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:39, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The entry about me is constantly being edited to contain slanderous material

Good Afternoon My name is C. Christine Fair. My bio is constantly being edited by pro-Pakistani persons who insert slanderous and inaccurate information about me. I'm rather appalled that Wikipedia allows persons to simply write anything they want about a person. What, if any recourse, is there to end the perpetual misinformation that these information operators place about me?

It's extremely annoying and Wikipedia should have some responsibility in preventing this nonsense from happening.

The webpage is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C._Christine_Fair. As of 3:33 am, EST the content is accurate.

Wikipedia does care about the accuracy of its articles. It therefore requires contentious statements to be supported by references to reliable independent published sources, and strongly discourages people from editing articles in which they have a conflict of interest. I have therefore reverted the edit in which you removed several referenced statements from an article about yourself. Maproom (talk) 07:46, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Grammy elected, Blues Hall of Fame

Dear editors: I came across this draft article: Draft:Michael Charles, which states that the musician is "Grammy elected". I haven't heard that term before; usually a musician is either nominated or wins a Grammy. Also, another editor has said that the "Blues Hall of Fame" into which he has been inducted is not the official one. There doesn't appear to be a WikiProject for blues music, and the roots music project isn't very active. New Article

I just wrote an article page, which is like a biography. Wikipedia policy needs a source to be mentioned to support it. I took the information from the below Link;

http://www.cwckuwait.com/speakers/mohammed-ghazi-al-mutairi/

How could I use this as a source to protect my article from Deletion ?

Regards, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tariqeh (talkcontribs) 11:58, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Tariqeh: see WP:CITE for information on how to cite a source. RegistryKey(RegEdit) 12:31, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
But please note, Tariqeh, that the only thing that source can support in the article Mohammad Ghazi Al-Mutairi is that he spoke at the summit, and maybe uncontroversial factual information such as the date he joined KNPC. None of the evaluative information from it may be included, because it is not an independent source. Wikipedia is not interested in anything said or published by the subject, their friends, relatives, employees, employers, agents, or associates: articles should be based almost 100% on what people who have no connection with the subject have published about them - if such independent reliable sources cannot be found, then the subject is not notable in Wikipedia's special sense, and it is impossible to write an acceptable article about them. Please see reliable sources for more information. Note, however, that it is not required that sources be in English, or on-line, though English sources are preferred if they are available. If there are independent articles in Arabic about Al Mutairi, they would be accecptable, and would contribute to his notability. --ColinFine (talk) 15:09, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Also, Tariqeh, the article is copied from the source; this makes the article a copyright violation. —teb728 t c 07:09, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Adding one or more than one of something is usually done in the same way. Please clarify your question including whether it's about List of jam bands, Category:Jam bands or some other page. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:44, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, IP user. I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6.8 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. --ColinFine (talk) 15:22, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

How can I add information to a company page? We want the Wikipedia page to be similar to the information on the website.

The information I've added has been deleted.

• Nadiacgvieira, the warning messages you received seem fairly clear to me. Please refrain from editing the page until you have understood the issues.
1. You need to post factual, sourced content, not promotional material.
2. You cannot simply upload copyrighted material. We are on the internet, and anyone could claim to be you and upload said material illegally. You need to follow the rules if you want to upload a logo etc. TigraanClick here to contact me 17:25, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Free use?

Hello. I am working on the article Aquaspirillum serpens. I would like to extensively cover the topic through the many research papers online. One of them (Here) has a very nice electron picture of the species. The pdf itself is part of the Journal of Bacteriology, which I believe is public domain. However, better safe than sorry. My question is whether the picture itself is public domain, and if not, may I put it up under free use anyways? Thanks as always for the help, and if anyone has constructive criticism for the article, I'm very open to it. Fritzmann2002 18:32, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Fritzmann2002 The website doesn't specify that it has a copyright licence compatible with Wikipedia, as it says "Copyright © 2016 by the American Society for Microbiology", which means they're keeping all copyright on it. As for free use, I'm not sure- is there no free equivalent image? If there is a free equivalent, then per Wikipedia's fair use policy, you cannot use a non-free one. Joseph2302 18:41, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It's an existing species, anyone can create a free equivalent at any time, so no image will ever meet fair use perWP:NFCC#1. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 18:44, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Also, the Journal of Bacteriology itself seems to have copyright registrations throughout most of its more recent publication history (see [2] for 1981). GermanJoe (talk) 19:08, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the info. I will try to find another image elsewhere. Glad I came here before I did anything. Fritzmann2002 19:14, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Template issue

I do not know where to ask for this particular issue. If I am in the wrong place, please redirect me to the right page. I cannot seem to find the issue why on List of Chicago Med episodes, in the season 1 subsection, the summary for the first episode shows while the rest doesn't. The main article seems fine to me. I've tried comparing to other season articles, but it isn't resolving the issue. Thank you, Callmemirela 🍁 {Talk} 20:36, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Page creation

How do I create my own wikipedia page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sudendra Bharath S (talkcontribs) 23:54, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Sudendra Bharath S: Please see Your first article. If you'd like help going through the steps below, try the Article Wizard.
1. Ensure that you have an account and you are logged in. If you don't have an account, create one
2. Learn the basics of editing with the Wikipedia:Tutorial
3. Make sure the subject is notable enough to warrant a stand-alone article
4. Gather reliable sources to cite in the article
5. Make sure no article on the subject exists under a different title by typing the subject into the search box and clicking 'Search'
6. Type the page name in the search box and click 'Go'
7. Click 'Create this page'
8. Create the article, including all your references, making sure you adhere to the Manual of Style and our article layout guidelines
9. Be aware that Wikipedia deletes thousands of new articles for failing to adhere to our policies and guidelines. New articles by new users are at extra risk of deletion, due to new users' unfamiliarity with our rules. Consider gaining experience by editing existing articles before attempting to create new ones.

Hello, Sudendra Bharath S. Most of the advice Pppery has given you is good, but I disagree with a few points. First, they omitted what I think is an important step early on: spend a few weeks (or months) improving existing Wikipedia articles and learning how Wikipedia works before you embark on the difficult task of writing a new article. Secondly, I would not advise anybody to follow steps 6 and 7 unless they are very confident that they can write an article that is accepted first time. Ignore those steps and use the Article wizard to create a draft.
But one more important thing that Pppery did not say: if by "my own Wikipedia page" you mean "an article about you", then the answer is, you don't. While autobiography is not outright forbidden, it is very strongly discouraged. Wikipedia is not a place for you tell the world about anything, least of all yourself: it is a place where readers can find collected together information about subjects that has already been published by independent sources. --ColinFine (talk) 12:03, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Well first you need to ask the question. There is no way to tell how long it will take for it to get answered. Everyone here is a volunteer and editing happens at all hours of the day and night. I am sure that someone will get to it as quickly as they can once you've asked the question. MarnetteD|Talk 01:58, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Posting

I am trying to post a bio page for my boss but once I posted it, it got deleted. How can I post it without it being deleted? — Preceding unsigned comment added by TeamShaniJohnson (talkcontribs) 01:52, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@TeamShaniJohnson: Please see Why was my page deleted? The most common reasons are:

To find the specific reason a particular page was deleted:

1. Go to the Deletion Log
2. Type the page title in the case-sensitive search field
3. The date, time and reason for deletion will be displayed
Also, please sign your post by typing four tildes (~~~~) or clicking the signature button above the edit box which looks like this: . Do not sign in articles. Pppery 01:58, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
In this case, the deletion log can be found at Shani Johnson. --David Biddulph (talk) 08:28, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Probably, you don't, TeamShaniJohnson. Of all the people in the world who might edit Wikipedia, the person who above all should not edit an article on Shani Johnson is Shani Johnson. Closely behind are the friends, relative, employees, and associates of Shani Johnson. Wikipedia is not here for anybody to advertise themselves. It also has essentially no interest in what anybody (or their friends relatives, associates, or employees) say about them. If we have an article on anybody, it should be based almost 100% on what people who have no connection with the person have published about them. So an article on Shani Johnson should summarise (without just copying) the contents of several substantial pieces about Johnson, written by people who have no connection (and excluding any articles based on interviews or press releases) and published in reliable places such as major newspapers. The article should itself be written by people who have no connection with Johnson - see COI for why - and summarise neutrally what these independent sources say. Johnson and Johnson's employees will have no control over the contents of Wikipedia's article, though they may make suggestion on its talk page. --ColinFine (talk) 12:14, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Change title of Barry Andrews (politician) to Barry Andrews (humanitarian)

Error: Protected edit requests can only be made on the talk page.

Hello,

I am looking at this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Andrews_(politician)

I would like to submit a request to change the title of the page to Barry Andrews (humanitarian).

He hasn't been in politics since 2011 and is head of a NGO charity organization in Ireland for several years now.

[1]

Goal2016 (talk) 10:51, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

But he is primarily notable to history as a politician, not as a NGO head (and "humanitarian" is damned egotistical). --Orange Mike | Talk 11:52, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The purpose of that term in brackets is solely to distinguish him from any other Barry Andrews, not to make a statement about him, Goal2016. As Orangemike says, a neutral description matching how he is covered in the sources is most appropriate. Having said that, you are welcome to make the case for changing the title at Requested moves. --ColinFine (talk) 12:19, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
