Incorrect removal of my page edit

Blake Griffin was the first overall pick of the 2009 NBA Draft, so why delete my edit to the page? 2009_NBA_draft

I made an edit on the "10538 Overture" page, but only because clicking on cello rock redirects you to progressive rock anyways.

Cayambe Coca

Hello MaterialScientist...I am new to editing Wikipedia, so not sure if this is the proper way to respond to your reversion of my changes to Cayambe Coca Ecological Reserve. The governing agent of Ecuador's protected areas is the Ministerio del Ambiente. If you check their website, you will see Cayambe Coca was converted from an Ecological Reserve to a National Park in 2010. http://areasprotegidas.ambiente.gob.ec/es/mapa-ficha?t=P&id=27

WP:AIV revert

Can you explain your edit-summary-free revert of my report? Lapadite (talk) 15:59, 6 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You have reported 2 IPs that briefly edited on 20 May and had no prior history - such IPs are called "stale". There is absolutely no use reporting/blocking them, unless there is a solid evidence they are open proxies. Materialscientist (talk) 22:36, 6 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Why "unencyclopedic addition"? The discussion about the health effect of radon is still going on - few scientific papers presented different findings - thus the short information about that fact is encyclopedic. Czestomir (talk) 05:50, 7 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:Sobachenkov, Medvedev, Ryabenko and Brezhnev.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Sobachenkov, Medvedev, Ryabenko and Brezhnev.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:37, 9 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I just want your advice on the Sockmaster User:Hammadsaeed who has been renamed as User:BukhariSaeed. Now if we see on the Sockpuppet_investigations the User:Hammadsaeed is not showing any SUL recoed.

I want to check on the another two suspected Sockpuppets but they are only on Urdu ur Wikipedia.

Question is on Sockpuppet_investigations should I use the Sockmaster User:Hammadsaeed or User:Hammadsaeed. Because User:Hammadsaeed is not showing any SUL record Now.

What sources are needed for observations of a 40 year 2-3x week customer of Souplantation?

I am trying to figure out why you removed a thoughful, factually correct edit I made to Souplantation's wiki on 6/12 within hours after I made it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Souplantation

I am a 40 year customer of theirs for 2-3 times a week, so who would be a better source? I was present on their opening day having a special invite from the bartender who founded it. He had enticed me and others to try it by saying there would always be plenty of meat in the stockpot soups. Later when Mitt Romey's Bain Capital partner Michael Mack took over he told me that he would keep this "secret weapon" intact since it broadened the restaurant from vegetarian to general market. So this should surely merit a mention about the chain's success as favorites in many locations in California, Florida, Arizona and Georgia?

The idea that such valuable color would not be allowed in a Wiki article is ridiculous. This would be similar to one of the descendants of the space program not being able to add that their grandmother did critical calculations as depicted in "Hidden Figures" movie because they had no official source, since it took 50+ years to have this documented in the movie!

I'm the founder of one of the largest weekly newspapers in the country and also a Microsoft MVP for 7 years, which is the highest award in the tech field. Are my personal observations from 40 years as a loyal customer not qualified enough?

Thank you Greg Carmack — Preceding unsigned comment added by Walkdmx (talkcontribs) 17:43, 13 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Hey User:Walkdmx. What is needed is for that 40 year 2-3x week customer to have their opinions published in a reliable source. Wikipedia is not a publisher of original thought; all we do is present what quality sources themselves say, and not what we as Wikipedia editors happen to think or believe. Your contribution may be perfectly appropriate for a blog, online review, or even in a related local or industry magazine, but it does not appear to be appropriate for an encyclopedia. Wrong (?) Correction

Hi Materialscientist,

I am the guy who tried to make a correction earlier today on the "Quantum confinement in semiconductors" section. First time for me to try to edit a wikipedia page, so please forgive if I haven't properly explained my correction.

I just noticed that the links to the source [75] are not refering to the cited one, "Optical fine structures of highly quantized InGaAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots", but instead to "Power dissipation for systems with junctions of multiple quantum wires".

Which one is the one you wanted to refer ?

Best, Xayros

Collateral damage

Because of this block, for one minor edit filter triggering, there are now a large number of accounts with unblock-auto requests on their talk pages. From what I see, it appears to be a school, but perhaps there is more to it. Please take a look at the account to see whether removing the autoblock is prudent. Thanks —DoRD (talk) 11:37, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Given that a whole bunch of them have been posting personal information on their userpages, I'd be in favour of the block sticking around for a little while, at least until it's clear that the school understands how to use Wikipedia and how to keep it's pupils safe online. Yunshui  11:44, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, I only saw that most of the userpages were redlinks. Yes, those were inappropriate, clearly, but having CAT:UNBLOCK suddenly populate with a dozen or so related requests was ... jarring. —DoRD (talk) 12:03, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've left notes for two of the students. —DoRD (talk) 12:16, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps I'm too sleepy and don't understand something - my block was issued on 8 June, and there is a series of unblock-auto requests on 14 June. There was some activity on that IP in between, but only on one day. I understand how an autoblock can autopropagate beyond 24 hours, but not in this case (please do educate me, use email if this page is not appropriate). Is this because some actions are hidden in CU logs? Anyway, I'll go offline soon, and anyone is welcome to remove this autoblock. Materialscientist (talk) 12:00, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I assume that the blocked user logged in, tried to edit, and reinstated the autoblock. —DoRD (talk) 12:03, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You mean that logging in (which can be done automatically by anyone, provided the login/password was autosaved on a local PC) would be sufficient to reset the autoblock, as we can't see "attempted editing". Hm .. Sorry, got to logout. Materialscientist (talk) 12:10, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Logging in alone might be sufficient to trigger the autoblock, but I'm not certain. If they attempted to edit anything except their talk page, though, it wouldn't leave any traces for CU to see unless it tripped an edit filter. —DoRD (talk) 12:16, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Why are we blocking user accounts indefinitely for tripping the edit filter only once and without warning the user first? I feel like that's a bit overly excessive :-/ ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:52, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Same here. Tripping the edit filter once is similar to making one vandalistic edit. In the latter case, it would warrant a Level 1 warning; why should the former be any different? Unless it's a sockpuppet, even vandals should be given a chance. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 22:55, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You assume that we must follow the ladder scheme: issue a level-1 warning for any non-constructive edit, gradually escalate it to level-4, then consider blocking. The current blocking policy does not require that, and I urge editors and admins to use common sense and experience (when time permits), make bold decisions, and be responsible for them. This what I do. I followed the templated ladder scheme in my early years, and still do sometimes, but experience tells that it works well as an exception rather than a rule, i.e., editors should not hesitate to skip some warning levels, or not to escalate warning levels at all, and write a free-text message. Otherwise we end up with users/IPs who get away for years by stopping at level-3 each time, and with poor-quality WP:AIV report (made simply because someone slapped a tag, and often blocked only because of that). Feel free to disagree, I do not require anyone to follow me. I just do know that we fail miserably in dealing with obvious vandalism/spam, and those who don't see that might wish to spend one weekday on patrolling some edit filters (I can give a hotlist). JakelovPats and others

FYI please see Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/JakelovPats#Suspected sockpuppets -- PBS (talk) 08:27, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Having read some of the other sections on this talk page. I think it appropriate to explain a bit more. I could have blocked these accounts myself but I think that formal Sockpuppet investigation keeps a better record and is easier for others to find in the future. I decided to link these accounts because my experience in the past is that such accounts can be reactivated by a person who is blocked for other infringements in the future, and because they have existed for some time, they make it more difficult to identify such accounts as sockpuppets of a person recently blocked. -- PBS (talk) 08:33, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Possible sock

Could you check if User:UCLAgirl623 is a sock of User:ThunderFan109, who you indef blocked about a year ago. Aside from the obvious knowing of the ins and outs of Wikipedia right off the bat (such as username customization and starting their talkpage with the talkheader template), what tipped me off was how they both asked for assistance in bringing an article to GA, and then requested that the work be done for them because they "don't feel like" doing it. See here and here. Lizard (talk) 20:15, 16 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
