Scheduling of Marriage to Betty
If Ford were attempting to hide the fact that he was marrying a divorced ex-dancer from the people voting in the 1948 congressional election, it seems that he would have waited until after the election, and not have gone through a ceremony with two weeks remaining in the campaign.John Paul Parks (talk) 22:16, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
Selection As Vice-President
The choice of Ford to fulfill Agnew's vacated role as vice president was based on his reputation for openness and honesty.[178
This is just horse manure. The citation is to Ford's wife.
The standard explanation at the time was that Nixon doubted that his first choice, John Connally, could gain the approval of both houses, and that the Democrats would hesitate in impeaching Nixon if by so doing they would make Ford President, because Ford was seen as a partisan hack for his attempt to impeach Justice Douglas in 1970, and because Democrats knew that LBJ had said that Ford had "played too much football without a helmet, and now he can't fuck and chew gum at the same time." The latter quote was cleaned up in the press at the time to another four-letter word ending in "k" that means "intercourse", and is in this article bowdlerized to "fart". "Fart" was not an unacceptable word then or now--it was necessary to change LBJ's verb to "talk" because one couldn't say "fuck".
Ford pledged at the time that, if confirmed, he would not be a candidate for President in 1976. He repudiated that pledge in his first press conference after taking office as President.
- I think the public version of Johnson's remark was that Ford could not walk and chew gum at the same time. What Johnson may have said privately, I have no idea. I have heard, for example, that General McAuliffe did not say "nuts" at the Battle of the Bulge in response to the German demand for surrender.John Paul Parks (talk) 22:20, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
