Huggle Scoring and IRC

Hey Osh! I have a question about Huggle, mainly about scoring. I have seen that the score in the top righthand corner is sometimes a positive number and sometimes a negative one? Is the higher the number the more likely it is vandalism? Also, I can't seem to apply for a IRC cloak. I get a message saying they are no longer accepting responses. I know I will need to get an IRC nickname first, and I will do that when I get home(school blocks IRC), but what should I do for cloaking then? ThanksLakeside Out!-LakesideMinersClick Here To Talk To Me! 17:48, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi LakesideMiners! You are correct - edits are scored between -1000 and 1000 (if I remember correctly); the higher a positive integer the score is, the higher it scored as a likelihood that the edit is disruptive. The lower a negative integer the score is, the lower it scored as a likelihood that the edit is disruptive. Just remember that because an edit scored high does not mean that it's vandalism. Many test edits and even heated messages will return a high score; just make sure to be careful and assume good faith when in doubt ;-).
I know this might be a stupid question, but bear with me here - did you apply for a cloak by following the directions here? I've heard that it can take awhile for a cloak to be given out. You can still join most Wikipedia IRC channels like #wikipedia-en (where I'm active at most of the day) no problem. Remember that registering a cloak and registering a freenode nick are two different things - registering a freenode nick is the process of using commands to set up an email address and password with Freenode and then having your IRC nick tied to that account so that others cannot use it unless they identify themselves with your password. Registering a cloak simply takes your Freenode registration and hides your IP address. Make sure you've registered a Freenode account and nick before you request a cloak. Those directions should walk you through both. Let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Cheers :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:48, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I did, it led me to this. [[1]](is this type of link okay?) but ya, once I get back home today(or i might just use tor) i will create my name. and just because you are older then me dosent mean I don't have a good understanding of how IRC works :P.
Also, do you happen to know a Tugs by any chance? You two seem to use alot of text faces.Lakeside Out!-LakesideMinersClick Here To Talk To Me! 10:48, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Heyyyy, I didn't say that you didn't have a good understanding of IRC! lol.. I just try to explain things thoroughly so that I make sense and that others who might have the same question can also get help from the response I made. You probably have a better understanding of IRC than I do... no joke ;-). And "Tugs"? Nope, can't say that know who that is... :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:51, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, Oshwah.

Hi! I am a new user. I have many questions for you:

[very unimportant questions, i am curious, but you don't have to answer]

  • can you stretch a rock?
Sure, just heat it up to the melting point and I'm sure you could.
  • Why mile length?
Why... why not? Oh... unless you're asking why the mile is the length that it is?
  • Cream cheese is cheese?
Yes.
  • Why do electric outlets look surprised?
Not all of them do. USA and Canadian outlets have that "surprised look", but check out the sockets used in the UK, Europe, and Asia - they're not so "surprised".
  • millipedes 10 times faster than centipedes?
I don't know... are they?
  • how many colors are in a rainbow?
7.
  • why does allstate(R) disclaim that it's not available in all states?
Because their insurance services are not available in all States within the United States.
  • why aren't square donuts available?
There are - you just haven't seen one yet.
  • can pollen be allergic to bees?
No, that's silly... lol
  • what's twice as hot as 0 degrees?
That's a complicated question that has either no answer or many answers depending on how you approach it... "twice as hot" is something I don't believe exists in the manner that you're asking. Both Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin measure temperatures differently. For example: Celsius measures on a scale from 0 to 100 degrees and uses the freezing point of water and the boiling point of water as its high and low bounds of scale; Fahrenheit used ammonium chloride to measure its scale, and was redefined later in its history. Given these different scales and how we measure and express objects in terms of temperature and heat - "twice as hot" might be able to be measured, ...but it just cannot be expressed. If we have two of the exact same object, and object A is measured at 5 degrees Celsius and object B is measured at 10 degrees Celsius, ...object B is not "twice as hot" as object A. Object B is just five degrees warmer according to the Celsius scale and hence five degrees closer to being the same temperature as water at the boiling point. That being said, you can however state that object B has "twice the temperature reading" as object A. This statement would be fine, since you're now just referring to the two temperature readings as simple integers and not accounting for what they actually represent. However, no object can be "twice as hot" as another... we just can't express that using the scales and terms that we use for this kind of information.
  • is the sentence "A a a a a a a a." correct?
I doubt it, but maybe?

Sorry, i'm just bored.

Hey, do you like puzzles?

Yes, depending on the puzzle, they can be very fun.

And is Oshwah a pokemon, or am I thinking incorrectly?

Not that I know of, no.

Oh, and also, Mark Alpert needs a page, but I don't know where to start or what to do.

That was epic.Lakeside Out!-LakesideMinersClick Here To Talk To Me! 10:43, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Just a quick note that you can in fact, have something that is "twice as hot as X" where X can be any temperature value except absolute zero (0 degrees Kelvin), so long as you have a reference temperature Y where Y < X, because "twice as hot" would then be defined as 2(X-Y). Also, while "A a a a a a a a." is not a proper sentence (and not just because it ends in a quoted period despite the quote being used in the middle of a sentence), "Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo," is. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 12:56, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
MPants at work - Interesting! I remember studying and having labs about Kelvin temperatures and ideal gasses, but I thought to myself here, "twice as hot? That's just not... hmm" and pondered it some. I took a year of physics with calc in college along with a term of quantum physics with calc, but that was a good 5+ years ago... lol. And oh yes, I know about the "Buffalo buffalo..." article... I've run into it many times over the years (usually to revert vandalism, haha)... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:10, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it's only true if the 0 degrees in question is measured in Celsius or Fahrenheit, and then the temps are all converted to Kelvin for the solution at the end. I should have mentioned that. It's odd, because it would seem like the answer is "no" because you can't have something that's numerically twice as hot as 0, and then even assuming it was 0°C or 0°F and converting to Kelvin, taking double that number is still just an arbitrary measurement; there's no way to show that 2X°K is "twice as hot" as X°K until you establish that 0°K is the baseline temperature against which to compare the two. And, I mean, it may seem obvious that 0%deg;K is the baseline to an idiot like me, but to a mathematician (like a friend of mine who once gave me a free 30-minute lecture on ratios in lieu of actually answering the question I actually asked him, the over-educated prick), that needs to be said explicitly, because blah-blah that's how you get fractions from ratios (as if having a smaller numerator than denominator didn't turn a ratio into a fraction already) and blah blah modern mathematics and blah blah set theory and blah blah computers blah blah technology blah blah getting a mathematics degree makes me smarter than you even though I distinctly remember you kicking my ass in chess and Starcraft on a regular basis for the first 15 years we knew each other until I got sick of losing and stopped agreeing to play you... ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 13:41, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
So apparently, 0 is the "preferred" baseline so I was wrong about it needing to be established beforehand, and that this does not, in any way, alter the fact that 2X is not "twice as much as X" without a baseline being established beforehand, however the hell that works. Also, apparently having your entire Protoss base destroyed by a couple of siege tanks and space marines because you were too busy building zealots off in a corner to build any defensive structures doesn't count as a loss in Starcraft accord some some obscure principle of mathematics that I'm not going to dignify by repeating here, but only if you're still sore about it 10 years later. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 16:34, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
MPants at work - Oh man... I played a lot of Starcraft back in the day (I also owned Starcraft 64 as well). I bought the remastered version update as well - definitely worth it! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 16:59, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I still play Starcraft 2 as well as the remastered original. That franchise may be a blatant ripoff, but it was a damn good blatant ripoff. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 17:02, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
MPants at work - I... you know... I just never got too far into Starcraft II. I'm not sure why... maybe it was just too different? I don't know. When the Starcraft Remaster update came out, that's what got me excited. Maybe I'm just too attached to what I remember and what I've played for many years... lol ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:16, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It is different. It's much less strategic and makes a lot of mechanical changes that don't really make sense in terms of in-universe logic (though they are well balanced). The original games is better by far, no doubt. But I'm just not turned off by the sequel, and there's a wide player base for it. Of course, I also think Fallout 4 is an amazingly fun game and I've spent more hours in it than in Fallout: New Vegas*, so make of that what you will.

To be fair, that has a lot to do with the fact that NV keeps crashing on my Win10 machine, and I haven't put an old graphics card in my Win7 machine to let me add 30 gigs of mods to it the way I like to play.

Rearranging your lists edit

Happy with your reply Oshwah, Thanks. I’ll do as we agreed caring your concerns and checking with the listed issues you supplied. There is not any interest or reason for me to cross the wiki red lines of info in the article. I’ll notify you as soon it’s done to get your revision and/or possible changes you suggest.  Hope this also help with your time and work. Best Enrique Nicanor (talk) 09:40, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Enrique Nicanor - I apologize for the delay getting back to your messages here. Like I said earlier, life kept me busy for awhile and I had a lot of Wikipedia messages and emails to catch up and respond to... I really appreciate your patience and your kind responses, as well as for discussing your concerns here and for making sure no objections or concerns would be raised with your proposed changes. More editors need to model this exact behavior that you demonstrated here... you'd probably be both surprised and disappointed as to how many editors out there will just revert or undo the changes made to articles that they disagree with or don't like and without even attempting to communicate with the other editor(s) involved. They resort to edit warring, making uncivil and heated arguments and personal attacks toward the other, lots of nasty and unneeded behavior - and instead of just being calm and respectful, and taking a little bit of time to collaborate with one another and just work things out. Your patience, ability to communicate and work things out peacefully, and your positive and respectful messages and responses are awesome - please know how appreciated it is, how far it will take you (not just on Wikipedia, but in life in general), and please don't lose that part of yourself. It shines, and more people need to step into that light :-). Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:57, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I actually tagged this user talk page for speedy deletion and somehow you were notified about this by Twinkle. I removed the notice because I thought I have made some mistake, but found out I have tagged the correct one. Do you know why would it happen? Thanks, Knightrises10 (talk) 10:00, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Knightrises10! I sure do, and I'll be happy to help explain :-). When you use Twinkle (or pretty much any other automated tool) to request speedy deletion of a page and have the creator notified for you, it will figure out who to notify by looking at the very first edit made to that page (AKA the person that created it). It'll assume that this is the editor that it needs to notify, and it will send the notification to that person. In this example, I was the creator of that user's talk page because I blocked this user for their username and for making promotional edits. This user hadn't yet received any messages from other editors, so my block notification was the edit that created the page. Hence, when the user decided to abuse their user talk page by continuing to advertise themselves on it and you tagged the page for deletion, the notification was sent to me. I receive those notifications a lot on my user talk page; no need to worry about it - I know that it's just someone using Twinkle or Huggle to tag a page I created (usually someone's talk page), and if anything it tells me that I should follow-up and take a look and see what's going on ;-).
The actual fix to this "issue" is to have Twinkle's source code updated so that when someone tags a user talk page for deletion, the option to "notify the creator" is unticked by default. In the situation where user talk pages are tagged for deletion, a notification isn't necessary - the editor that the user talk page belongs to is going to see that you tagged it... lol. I'd say that 99% of the time, the creator of someone's user talk page is either a random editor who happened to message them first (a notification would just confuse the living daylights out of them lol), or it'll be the editor that the user talk page belongs to (which results in a notification... being left on the same exact page you just tagged.... which is pointless).
Let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them and help you. Thanks for taking up recent changes patrolling and looking out for vandalism and disruption, and I'm sure we'll cross paths again soon. Cheers :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:13, 25 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Am I allowed to make a policy for my user email?--Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 00:08, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thegooduser - What exactly do you mean? What "policy" are you trying to implement? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:09, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
How I process my emails and my Email Privacy Policy Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 00:18, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thegooduser - That's still a bit broad, so forgive me if I'm not understanding correctly; are you trying to just publicly state on your user page or user talk page something like, "I won't share information emailed to me", or "I read and reply to emails in the order that I receive them" - stuff like that? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:21, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
BasicallyThegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 00:22, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thegooduser - Sure, nothing wrong with that. If I can make a recommendation - I'd state that information emailed to you won't be shared outside of it without the sender's permission first, and that users should only send you emails as opposed to messaging you on your user talk page if the information must be kept private. That's how I publicly state that I handle email messages and when users should contact me this way. Let me know if you have any more questions or if you need any help... you know where to find me ;-). Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:27, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
What about a law enforcement/court order or other exception? Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 00:29, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thegooduser - Ehh, I think that's straying a bit too far. I think you just need to explain to others how you handle emails they send to you, that you keep them private and won't share anything, and when users should email you. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:36, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
But is it okay? Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 00:39, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thegooduser - It may or may not be, depending on how you word things... if you were to say something like, "If you threaten me, I'm going to refer the email to the police" - that could be very problematic and for many reasons I won't delve into... lol ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:53, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

User:Battap

Hmm I noticed the edits and block. I find it real strange, as I saw various accounts before doing the exact same thing: adding strange single statements to articles, as if these were copied from elsewhere, bot-generated, or maybe the same editor... Unfortunately I've not noted those accounts down, but I think that I'll start to. Does it ring a bell for you as well? Thanks, —PaleoNeonate – 02:41, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi PaleoNeonate. The editing behavior by this user didn't ring any bells to me, but then again... I deal with a lot of users like this. If you're able to remember or pull up any other accounts that edited similarly to this one and that you suspect may be the same person, please let me know - it would be greatly helpful and I'd be happy to take a look and see what may be going on. I'm going to extend this user's block to be indefinite in the meantime; given the user's edits to their user talk page since the block was applied, it's clear that their sole purpose is to be a troll... so, an indef block it is! Keep me updated, and I'll be happy to take a look and do some digging if you manage to remember or find anything. Thanks for the message and for the information - my talk page is always open to you and you're welcome to leave me a message any time you'd like to or need to. So I remembered once reporting a user with similar behavior and managed to find that one: Special:Contributions/Timetin. Not conclusive that it'd be the same, but the single-sentence additions were quite similar... —PaleoNeonate – 05:52, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

PaleoNeonate - Cool deal! I'm happy that you managed to find one :-). Let me finish up a few things on my current "to do list" and I'll take a look and update you with what I find. Thanks for the response and for the information; I'll do some digging once I get these tasks done. Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:05, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
PaleoNeonate - Okay, so I took a look through the contributions of both accounts here. One appears to repeatedly add disruption by modifying religious articles and adding NPOV nonsense. The other editor appears to do generally the same thing but within articles about animals. Looking deeper, I don't see any specific similarities or editing habits that would connect the two. One user even continues disruption on their user talk page after being blocked while the other didn't (that user made a few test edits but nothing else). Their edit summary usage is also not similar; one sometimes adds random and nonsense summaries ("clapped", "Boi", and others) while the other did not use or add any edit summaries at all. I'm not seeing much that we could use as actual proof to assert their similarities. In case I missed something, can you provide one diff from each account that you feel are similar to one another so I can take a look? I just want to make sure I'm not overlooking something that you're seeing ;-). Let me know - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:19, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No, I think you're right. I could only entertain a conspiracy theory (unsubstantiated) of organized one-sentence trolls at the moment.PaleoNeonate – 06:29, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
PaleoNeonate - No worries; at least we took a look and made sure :-). If things change or if you feel that there are similarities between this (or other) accounts and you'd like to have me take a look, please let me know and I'll be happy to do so. Until we meet again ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:31, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Google is probably giving you information that it cached from Wikipedia in the past (usually a week or so at the longest). Since the last time Google probed the article for information, the information was removed (probably here) due to not being supported by a reliable source. If you check Google again in a few days, that information should be gone... it just needs to query the article again and update things on their end :-). Please let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks for the message! Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:28, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

I tried to delete the page as a few people have been posted slanderous information on in for a few days which has had a big impact on the person in question - Tony Conigliaro — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.171.153.189 (talk) 17:08, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Ah, you're referring to this article. The information you're referring to has been removed and hidden from public view, and the article has been protected. This issue should now be resolved, but do let me know if you see any more content that I need to review, and I'll be happy to do so. Thanks for the message and I wish you a great rest of your day :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:13, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes i was referring to this page it has occurred three times in the past few days, how long will it be protected for. It is causing personal and professional stress for the subject — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1.171.153.189 (talk) 17:22, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It will be protected for a few days. After it expires, I'll keep an eye on it and make sure that no unreferenced content is added to it and in violation of Wikipedia's policy (one that we treat and enforce very seriously). If you have any other questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let me know. Thanks again for the message, and I wish you a great rest of your day. About the changes made to Christ University

Hello , I thought it is not appropriate to have University name as honorable supreme Court has clearly mentioned that all private University should use deemed to be University title. So I replaced it by Institution. No offense. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sumukhar (talkcontribs) 17:34, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sumukhar! Welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for leaving me a message here and for explaining your edit to Christ University. What we typically want to do is have the subject name mentioned within the article kept to be the same as the article's title. If the official name of the school is not "Christ University" but actually "Christ Institution", we need to have this fixed by starting a new discussion on the article's talk page. This is where you'll collaborate with other editors and discuss article changes and what needs to be fixed, updated, and improved. If there's evidence that shows that the school's name is not correctly listed here, you'll want to provide links to those sources in order to help show that your assertions are accurate. Once other editors agree that the name needs to be changed, the article can be edited and the name updated to be correct as well as the article title changed. If you have any questions or need any help, please let me know and I'll be happy to lend a hand. If you haven't yet gone through and completed Wikipedia's new user tutorial, I highly recommend that you do so. It will provide you with many helpful walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will be helpful to you. Most users who take this advice tell me later that it was significantly helpful to them. Thanks again for the message and I wish you happy editing :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:50, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question On The Voder Page

Hi Oshwah - Thanks for reviewing the link posted on The Voder article @ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voder! Can you give some feedback on why the external link was censored? IMHO the interactivity of the site makes learning about The Voder fun + it has all soundbytes on The Voder (19 in total) downloadable from one spot. Any feedback you have would be welcome. 74.92.234.58 (talk) 17:36, 26 September 2018 (UTC)Nick[reply]

Hi there, and thanks for leaving me a message her with your request for feedback. The external link that you left appears to link to someone's website that provides the material described. Does this website belong to you or do you maintain this website at all? Let me know... ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 17:58, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Oshwah & thanks for the correspondence! The answer to the above is both. This is my website + I maintain it :) If you have any feedback to make it more wiki friendly, I'd love to implement it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.92.234.58 (talk) 19:05, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there! You're quite welcome! Yes, I thought that this was the case... this is why I removed the edit you made that added your website as an external link to it. Wikipedia isn't a place to add links like that to your website; we have guidelines regarding the use of external links which you can read here. Please let me know if you have any questions about this content guideline and I'll be happy to answer them. I appreciate your civil responses and attitude, and I'll be happy to help you with anything you need :-). Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:33, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't thank me Oswah! It's actually pretty amazing to have a conversation with a mod :) Thanks for everything you do, your correspondence, and your dedication to the platform! I checked out the link requirements and I think this external resource is trapped in a rather interesting spot. From an educational perspective, the mouseovers on the schematics and the soundbites really offer a more comprehensive view of the Voder that the wikipedia piece doesn't offer + it breaks down the topic so any children interested in learning beyond the article may be a bit more engaged. I feel it would definitely be a worthwhile resource to anyone researching the Voder. The other external resource is pointing to a dead site on the web archive so at the very least, this may offer a fresh perspective? If you think the interactivity of the site is solid, you would recommend any other way of delivering the resource as a helpful companion?74.92.234.58 (talk) 13:02, 27 September 2018 (UTC)Nick[reply]
Hi again, and thanks for responding with the additional information and your thoughts. Admins on Wikipedia are not special people at all compared to everybody else... we're really not. Aside from having (literally) a few more extra buttons that can do stuff, administrators are exactly the same as other editors in every other aspect; we don't have any kind of "authority" or "rank" over other editors nor are we "above" others. We're required to comply with and follow all of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines just like everybody else, and we're held to the same level of accountability for violating policy (in fact, I'd say that we're held to stricter accountability since we're expected to upload community trust with the user rights). We're simply people with a couple of extra buttons and that's it... so, really it's nothing that particularly special... lol
The concern I have with the external link right now is conflict of interest. Since you stated above that you own and maintain this website, it's considered highly discouraged behavior as well as inappropriate for you to go onto Wikipedia articles and add links to your own website. I'm sure you understand why this is behavior that the community does not view as acceptable... not only is it a conflict of interest and compromises the quality and neutrality of article content, the number of links that would be added here would bury us six feet under... haha. Is this exact same content you've hosted on your external website also perhaps available on a different domain or website that you don't own? ...preferably one that's considered neutral and reliable? If so, then we'll be all set - we'll just add that url to the article instead and boom - you won't be making edits in conflict with Wikipedia's guidelines. Let me know if my plan to resolve this will work or not, and please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. I'll be happy to help you and make sure that we do everything the right way ;-). Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:33, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
...But your extra buttons are awesome :) With editing though, time is arguably the most valuable asset one has, and to give it up pro bono is really an amazing thing! I 100% get the conflict of interest bit & thanks for your insight. I can definitely try reaching out to a some fellow Voder nerds to see if they'll scrape the content and post it on a neutral domain. Will I have any luck - realistically probably not - but I'll definitely give it a go! If I have any progress, I'll flag you down on this thread. Again, thanks for taking the time to correspond Oshwah!74.92.234.58 (talk) 15:07, 27 September 2018 (UTC)Nick[reply]
We're always looking for more people to join us and become long-term and experienced editors here :-). With the kind and respectful demeanor that you demonstrate, as well as your willingness to learn the rules and edit and add content within compliance of policy - you'd make an excellent editor here. Give it some thought... we need people like you and you'd do very well here as a regular member of our community!
Of course; you're very welcome :-). I appreciate you for working with me to make sure that we're adding content in compliance of policy, and I hope to see you back here soon... shoot, maybe you'll even decide to take the plunge, create an account, and become a regular contributor here... that would be awesome! ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:13, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ikf11, and welcome to Wikipedia! I'll be happy to point you in the correct direction and help set some expectations for you. Since you're a brand new user here, I recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial. It will provide you with many helpful walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will be essential to you (including article creation, what you're asking for help with here). Most users who take this advice tell me later that it was significantly helpful to them. Let me know if you have any questions after completing the new user tutorial entirely and I'll be more than happy to help you further. I just want to make sure that you go through the recommended and proper places so that you'll learn and understand Wikipedia's various policies and guidelines (including the ones that you need to know and understand before you write any content). Let me know how it goes - it's a good tutorial and it's very helpful! Cheers :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 20:00, 26 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Bot

Hi, I am thinking of creating a bot that will alert users of unusual Log In's from devices or IP's they don't really use. The bot would Email a notification or give a alert to the user if this is detected. Then there will be a option for the user to click "Yes, this was me" or "No. Log Out immediately" (Pushing this will put your account under "Compromised" and then the bot will send a request to block the account if it was compromised. Any advice of how to do this bot? Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 02:10, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thegooduser - The MediaWiki software already does this and exactly how you described your idea above. Users will receive an email and a Wikipedia notification of unsuccessful access and login attempts to their account, as well as unusual activity that's found. I'd think of another idea; this is already a thing ;-). ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:07, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

Thanks, I think, since I don't know what it was you removed from my talk page. Vandalism I suppose. Can you tell me what it was? Alexis Jazz (talk) 03:30, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alexis Jazz! He basically modified your talk page to say that you... umm... suck on something... with a bit more to it... lol. I don't know who this person was, but he was dead set on trying to harass you. All taken care of though ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:33, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Stuff along the lines of "Alexis sucks cocks" doesn't have to be removed. If it was placed at the top of the page it could be converted to a regular comment. I don't mind these comments. Can you unhide the revision? The exact wording may help me to figure out who wrote it. Alexis Jazz (talk) 03:40, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Alexis Jazz - I'll email the content to you privately. Keep an eye on your inbox and you'll see it today :-). ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:03, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You don't have email enabled on your user account, so I can't email the revision content over to you. If you don't wish to turn this on, you can instead send an email to me and I can then reply to it with the content. Let me know what you decide to do. Thanks :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:37, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Just curious, but how often do you check for external correspondence? Do you have automatic, perhaps even instant notifications set up? Do you check at regular intervals? Or just wait for notices from senders? Like I said, just curious... I'm thinking of tweaking my email prefs. Cheers - wolf 05:11, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Thewolfchild! It's good to talk to you yet again ;-). Are you just talking about email? I have Wikipedia emails that are sent to me automatically push to my mobile device, so I get pinged as soon as they come in. When I get pinged by my phone about a new email, I'll take a look at the email subject to make sure that it's not an emergency or an urgent matter that requires immediate action now. If it is urgent like I described, I drop what I'm doing and respond to the user right away in order to acknowledge the email and let them know that it's being handled. Otherwise, I'll generally respond to them during any "idle time" throughout my day, or at the end of the day at the longest (depending on each message and the priority and urgency of the matter, of course). That's generally how I check my emails and respond to them. Let me know if I can answer any more questions for you or if I can help you further, and I'll be happy to do so. Cheers ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 09:01, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Actress Sonia kaur, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for leaving me a message here with your request for help. Since you're new here, I highly recommend that you go through and complete Wikipedia's new user tutorial. It will provide you with many helpful walkthroughs, guides, interactive lessons, and other information that will be very helpful to you (including article creation, what you're asking for help with here). Most users who take this advice tell me later that it was significantly helpful to them to go through that tutorial, so definitely do so :-).
While you're here, I should also take a moment to explain a few policies and guidelines and set some expectations with you before you start making any edits. You should know that creating or editing articles on Wikipedia where you have a personal conflict of interest with the article subject is highly discouraged behavior and will almost certainly result in those changes being removed or deleted by other editors. Please also know that Wikipedia is not a place for advertising or promotion, and any edits that add content written in this manner will be removed. Please follow my advice and go through the new user tutorial I linked you to - it will help you to understand how Wikipedia works and will help to set more expectations so that you won't potentially spend hours of time writing, editing, or creating content and have it be completely wasted after they end up being removed or deleted by other editors. Thanks again for the message, I welcome you to Wikipedia, and I wish you happy editing :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:40, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Copying an article from another language Wikipedia

As the title says, can I know what is the policy of translating an article from another language Wikipedia through Google Translate, and then pasting it here at English Wikipedia? A few weeks ago, I saw an article with the edit summary, "I translated this from Italian Wikipedia" (as far as I can remember). Thanks, Knightrises10 (talk) 14:02, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Knightrises10! Sure, no problem. Wikipedia's translation guide should have all of this information there, and specifically, this section within that guide will explain how to properly translate content from one project to another. In a nutshell, we do not want content translations performed by just throwing the text into Google translate and then pasting what it spews back. As you probably already know, Google translate does a marginal job of translating text between languages at best, and the text that it returns isn't fluent at all - it's blocky, thick, and full of holes and missing conjunctions. While you can certainly use Google translate to help with part of the process by performing a quick and rough translation for you... a full, complete, and proper translation of content that would be deemed acceptable will involve having someone who can natively speak, read, and write in the destination language perform a full copyedit so that the content is completely and properly written. Please let me know if you have any more questions of if I can help you with anything else :-). Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 14:18, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

About deleting the link

Hi Oshwah,

Yes, I do believe this was a mistake, due to the fact that the page I linked to is indeed informational. You can find there further information regarding the breed. Also, if you explore the rest of the site, you can find useful information regarding other small dog breeds. The anchor on which I inserted the link states exactly what is mentioned on our site, too.

I am kindly asking you to put the link back, in case you didn't see that my page has also informational content.

If you still consider this to be a bad idea, I understand.

Have a good day, Troy — Preceding unsigned comment added by Troycl (talkcontribs) 14:43, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! It looks like he threw his temper tantrum and then gave up from there. I'm going to hold off on revoking talk page access for now, but if the user makes any additional disruptive edits to their user talk page after this one, please let me know and I'll yank it. In this case, meh... I won't pull it just because of one edit like that one... Most editors don't stick around after they "do a table flip" on their user talk page like that. They just leave... lol ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 15:35, 27 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Your reversion of me adding the extra information about the Residents forays in multimedia

, and my addition of the information the artist they worked with on the most successful project, namely Jim Ludke. I just wanted to know why you deemed fit to remove my additional information. Surely MORE information is better? I was around during the early days of multimedia in San Francisco, and believe me, nobody had heard of the Residents compared with respect and knowledge of Jim Ludke in high tech and multimedia art circles..... Ask Joe Sparks (who is still a friend of mine) https://www.joesparks.com/bio/milestones1.htm, who created another seminal breakthrough project around the same time - another of the very first interactive graphic games called Total Distortion. I created the Secrets of Stargate CDROM promotional interactive, which was a first in that business, for Gabreal Franklin's TSD, and later went on to co-create "The Last Express" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Express with Jordan Mechner (my name is Donald Grahame). The reason why Jim can't speak for himself is that he died very young. The early days of consumer software development in "multimedia gulch" in San Francisco were very exciting in those days - pre-web, and the Residents tapped into that energy, and definitely did not create it... their strength has been in longevity and tapping people like Jim to promote their act, more than a great deal of talent on their part. And another observation about the development of wikipedia, I see that it has a developed a culture of removal of information, by bright young things yourself I guess, like your edits, and as I result, has gradually turned into a skeleton of what it once was. Sad. I've stopped bothering to add information to it, as I see my additional information invariably gets removed. While I look at the info in wikipedia straight away when doing my own research through life, I now find wikipedia is now generally not much good for anything but the most cursory overviews on subjects that once contained all sorts of weird and wonderful pieces of information added by users from wide backgrounds — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pixelwash (talkcontribs) 14:08, 28 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pixelwash, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your thoughts and concerns. I went and took a look at your edits and I see that they were made back in July. I saw this edit you made and reverted it believing it to be a test. I didn't see back then that you had made other edits before this one. I apologize for reverting all of those edits; I only meant to revert the one. Since then, I've put fixes into place so that I avoid this exact situation in the future. It looks like you've restored the material that was removed - if this isn't the case and you need help, let me know and I'll be happy to help you. Thanks for the message and the heads up about this. Yandhi

Could you (or another editor) take a look at the article? A lot of anons are adding (and removing) questionable content/vandalism to that page. However given the shear volume of edits I don't even know which edit to revert to or what edits are or aren't correct. Sakura CarteletTalk 05:50, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Sakura Cartelet: ClueBot NG and Jennica have reverted all bad-faith edits. The page has also been requested for protection. Don't worry :-). Knightrises10 (talk) 06:00, 30 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sakura Cartelet! Thanks for leaving me a message with your concerns. I took a look at the edits on the Yandhi article, and it looks like I'm seeing an edit war over content between A.w.quin and other editors, and a dispute over content taking place after Fox applied semi protection to the article more than anything. There was bad faith content added like you said, but it looks like they were removed. It looks like the issues have since stopped - do you see any content on the article that I should look at? Anything that looks like vandalism or isn't referenced that should be? Let me know and I'll be happy to take a look at it. Thanks again for the message and I wish you a great rest of your day and happy editing :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:21, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'll have no choice but to apply a longer block. We just can't have these kinds of edits going on like that... it's a serious violation of policy. Thanks again :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:28, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Jo-Jo Eumerus - Okay, the user was actually blocked one hour after they made the edit you linked to above, and the user hasn't edited since the block was applied. Nonetheless, I left a custom warning for them so that there's no question that they've been given a warning, an explanation, and an opportunity to review the documentation and ask questions. If they make future copyright violations, it can be assumed that this user was given a fair opportunity to review the documentation and ask questions, and that they did so and understood them (as I stated in the message I left the user). Hopefully this will be what's needed in order to stop future copyright violations by this user... we shall see :-). ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:59, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Email address of User:Isaidnoway

I can't find Isaidnoway's email address, I saw your post in their talk page, do you have it by any chance? We're coordinating on Avianca Flight 011 together and it's really important. Tigerdude9 (talk) 20:57, 1 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Tigerdude9 - You can email Isaidnoway by navigating to his user page and then clicking on the "email this user" link located on the left navigation pane. This will navigate you to a form where you can send an email to the user. Please note that, unless the message contains private information or implies urgency that must be expressed via email, you should stick to leaving the user a message on their user talk page where it remains public and on Wikipedia. If it involves a discussion over a specific article's content, you should keep the discussion on the article's talk page and ping the user to notify them of the discussion instead. Discussions that take place "off wiki" (or outside of Wikipedia) do not count to the community as an "official discussion" and where decisions can be made and consensus reached. This is because of the fact that it was not public and available for all members of the community to see and provide input to. Please let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Good luck with the discussion and I wish you happy editing. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:07, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately not. ArishiaNishi (talk) 21:26, 1 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

ArishiaNishi - Were you attempting to reply to the message that Tigerdude9 left above? If so, see my response above. If not, let me know. If you could elaborate on what you were referring to and if you needed help with something, I'll be happy and able to help you. Thanks :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:10, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

2019 in television

Last night I made an article called 2019 in television and it was safe but now it's a rederict I thought 2019 was here but earlier I blanked the page and that was a mistake. 68.103.78.155 (talk) 16:11, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

No worries; thanks for leaving me a message and for explaining. Mistakes happen... we were all new here at one point and we've all made mistakes. The article you created was converted into a redirect so that people who navigate to that title will instead be forwarded to the main article where this information (as well as the information from earlier years) is all listed. The information you added is still available to be reviewed. Simply click on the small link located near the top of the page that says "(Redirected from 2019 in television)" to be taken back to the original page without being forwarded, then click on the History tab. You'll be able to see all edits made to that page and pull any content from any revision. If you have any questions or need help with anything, please let me know and I'll be happy to do so. Thanks again for the message and I wish you happy editing :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:14, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

User Appers to be gaming the system

User:TheBoiZurkelman Has been making the same two edits over and over again. adding a period, then removeing it, then adding it again, look at his contributions to his own User page. Seems to trying to gain Extended confirmed. I would like your view on this as I don't have a lot of experience with that kind of stuff. Thanks! He also just removed my comment. I have restored it and warned him.Lakeside Out!-LakesideMinersClick Here To Talk To Me! 17:52, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I’m very sorry. I am a little addicted to earning badges and awards. I promise it won’t happen again. I just thought that on MY page, it would cause the LEAST harm. I’m sorry for causing disruptance. :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheBoiZurkelman (talkcontribs) 17:58, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

LakesideMiners - It looks like this user was blocked for the reasons you stated here. People who do this within their user space are almost always trying to rack up edits in order to become extended confirmed. It only helps the user meet one of the requirements, but it also means that they'll be able to modify articles under this protection as soon as the account exceeds 30 days in age. Definitely say something if you see behavior like this; in many (if not most) cases, this stems from block evasion, LTA activity, sock puppetry, or some kind of plan to cause disruption ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:19, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey can you do me favour and check out WP:AIV as the backlog is getting pretty severe. I left a message on IRC but couldn't get ahold of anyone. Cheers dmartin969 23:24, 2 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How to use Huggle?Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 00:15, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Thegooduser - See Huggle's page; it has a link to their manual, which should do a decent job providing you with enough information to get started. My advice for you regarding Huggle is to be very careful. Use only the mouse to perform actions on Huggle until you get proficient with the interface; do not use the keyboard or any keyboard hotkeys to perform actions until you get used to how Huggle works first. It's very easy to accidentally press or elbow the wrong button or key, and Huggle will perform that action and without any confirmation and very little indication that you've done so. Many new Huggle users won't know that they did something wrong or messed something up until they receive a message on their user talk page from an angry editor inquiring about your revert. You definitely do not want to be that user. Read through the manual and familiarize yourself with Huggle using only the mouse first. When, and only when, you find yourself comfortable and proficient with Huggle's interface should you consider using the keyboard or setting up shortcuts. Good luck, Huggle carefully, and happy patrolling! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:22, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's too hard for me to understand. I stick to TW for now :) Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 00:24, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thegooduser - Good call. It's always better to stick to the tool that you personally find easiest to use and that works for you. In every situation, it's better to be accurate than fast when it comes to patrolling recent changes ;-). ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:27, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How do I maker a notice for email sent? Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 00:32, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thegooduser - I'm not sure what you mean. Can you elaborate and expand upon your question so I can understand? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:33, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The notice after you send an email. Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 00:38, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thegooduser - You mean when Wikipedia tells you, "Your email has been sent" after you send an email to a user? That's not a page that you can customize. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:42, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yep Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 00:42, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thegooduser - Yeah, I don't believe that the confirmation page for that can be customized. Sorry. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:44, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Admin

When Can become an admin? In 1 year? Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 01:01, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) @Thegooduser: You can become an admin when your work on the site satisfies the community to give you the mop . It does not depend on the time , it depends on quality of work you do . Kpgjhpjm 01:28, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thegooduser - Administrators are users who have been granted the rights by community consensus and after a week-long review and discussion of the user's contributions to Wikipedia. It a senior-level user group that requires at a minimum: a long-term and consistent demonstration of the user's knowledge and compliance of Wikiedia's policies and guidelines, participation and understanding of relevant policies in different administrative areas on Wikipedia (such as AIV, UAA, AFD, and others), and the natural ability to lead, motivate, understand, explain, keep calm, and help users who are in conflict and with little-to-no history or patterns of incivility, losing patience, or behaving "under the stress" or "in response to stress". It is not given to new editors. If you're looking into possibly becoming an administrator someday, you should read through this advice essay, this guide, as well as this one. These pages will help give you an idea of what is expected of potential administrator candidates, the process, and what being an administrator is as well as what it isn't. Apart from having (literally) a few extra buttons, there is no difference between editors who are administrators and editors who are not; administrators do not have additional "authority", "rank", or "priority" over anyone else. They cannot "tell users what to do", "block, hide, or remove whatever they want", nor can they "make their own rules". They're simply editors who, by community discussion and consensus, have been granted the ability to perform tasks that are not given out to all users for practicality reasons. That's it. Read through those guides, and maybe consider down the road if adminship is right for you. You still have plenty to learn, many places to explore, many more mistakes to make and learn from, and more overall experience to gain before you'd be considered for such a role - even if you were to look one year ahead from now. Is it possible you may be considered for the rights a year from now? Yes. Has it happened before? Sure, a number of times. Is it realistic given how I've seen the expectations, discussions, input, and votes of the community? I'd say no. Let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to answer them. Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:30, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I am [REDACTED - Oshwah]? Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 01:32, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thegooduser - So that the information you gave above doesn't come back to bite you at all (as well as for your privacy), I redacted it for you. Don't make information about yourself public like that unless you absolutely understand the possible consequences of doing so and you're absolutely sure that you're okay with such information being public forever. The short answer to your question is 'no, it is not'. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:36, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have been banned from the IRC channel for Revdel. When can I request an unblock? Thegooduser Let's Chat 🍁 01:44, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
First, I would read through Wikipedia's policies and guidelines page regarding the use of revision deletion and make sure that you fully understand it first. I'd give it a few weeks first, then ask to talk to someone on IRC regarding the channel ban. Please know that you weren't banned from the channel because you are a bad person or because people in the channel dislike you or anything like that; you were making too many revDel requests in the channel for revisions and content that did not meet the requirements and didn't need revision deletion under the policy. After some time has passed and you've demonstrated that you have a better understanding of the policy and when we apply revision deletion and when we don't, you'll be able to rejoin the channel again no problem :-). ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:52, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Power~enwiki - joining and contributing to the Wikipedia Signpost would be a better thing for you to do instead of putting fourth unnecessary work and starting something redundant that already exists :-). ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:25, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Georgetown University Edit

Hi Oshwah, you recently removed my edit on this page. I would like to add the information as a fact, which it is. Can you suggest a better way of writing it? I would have put it on her page but she has blocked editing. She has published terrible speech that is hate filled with sexist, racist and extremist and she is a professor at this University. Twitter has diabled her account and there are at least a dozen sources of this. Are we trying to hide the facts? Thank you Oshwah — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pauloster (talk) 03:38, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pauloster, and thanks for leaving me a message here with your questions. I saw that you added your question here using your IP address (probably accidentally and after signing out of your account) - no worries; I've redacted your IP information for you so that your privacy and security is protected. Your edit here to Georgetown University was reverted for a number of reasons, with the most prominent reason being that it violated Wikipedia's policy requiring all content to be worded to reflect a neutral point of view. Your edit to the article did not do this, and appeared to consist solely of your input, point-of-view, and opinion. Aside from this, your edit also mentioned that one of the professors at this school wrote controversial messages using social media and without citing any reliable sources. These are the main reasons why your edit was removed. Please take the time to go through Wikipedia's new user tutorial if you haven't done so already, and review the pages I've linked for you here. They will further explain different policies and guidelines that you should be aware of. Please let me know if you have any questions after you've completed the tutorial and reviewed the policy pages I've linked you to, and I'll be happy to answer them. Thanks again for the message and I wish you well. Best regards - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 03:48, 3 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
