===Marathon course=== |
|||
The scenic nature of central Minnesota's lakes and forests set the stage for runners who move over roadsides and a paved path on a two-loop course. The roads, though not closed to traffic, are mostly low-traffic routes. Cones separate the route on busier roads. |
|||
The race begins in downtown Nisswa, Minnesota, on Lower Cullen Road, which runs north-south, and is sandwiched between Minnesota State Highway 371 and the Paul Bunyan State Trail. The course starts by going north for a half mile, then turns east for a mile and a half, passing north of forested public land<ref>{{cite web |

|||
The route crosses Crow Wing County Road 13 near the unincorporated community of Lake Hubert. Runners continue south, circling the namesake lake (Lake Hubert) clockwise, passing six more lakes. At the south end of the lake, there are a few rolling hills (around miles 7 and 8, which are repeated at miles 21 and 22).<ref name="Brainerd Jaycees Run for the Lakes">{{cite web |

The course moves north on Camp Lincoln Road, past the 100-year-old kids camp run by Grand View Lodge, and turns east on County Road 13 before veering northwest on the Paul Bunyan State Trail and returning to downtown Nisswa, where the half marathon ends and the marathoners go north on Church Street before starting the second loop of the course.<ref>{{cite web |

The weather was better in 2010, and the annual event remained steady for 12 years before the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic hit. Initially, the race was a single large loop, but in 2011, the race simply repeated the half-marathon course to make a two-loop route. This confused some runners, as they didn't know if they were competing against half-marathoners, marathoners, or marathon relay runners, since they all started at the same time and place. The organizers moved the start line of the half marathon to alleviate confusion. |

Nisswa (/ˈnɪswə/ NISS-wə) is a city in Crow Wing County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,971 at the 2010 census.[5] Nisswa is part of the Brainerd Micropolitan Statistical Area, near Gull Lake. It is a popular tourist destination due to its many unique stores, including Stonehouse Coffee, a coffee shop and cafe that roasts beans in the store, Adirondack Coffee, the first gourmet coffee shop in central Minnesota, The Chocolate Ox, an ice cream parlor and candy shop, and Zaiser's shoe store. The Paul Bunyan State Trail runs through Nisswa.
History
Smiley Township was founded in 1900, but local resident Leon Lum convinced residents to rename it Nisswa, from the Ojibwe word "nessawae" (which means "in the middle" or "three"),[6] when the town was incorporated as a village in 1908. Nisswa became a municipality on December 4, 1946.
Geography

The Run for the Lakes Marathon is a race in Nisswa, Minnesota, first run in 2008.[26] The race is known for its remote route through central Minnesota lakes country, featuring forested roads, towering red pine trees, multiple lakes and (often) 45-degree weather [27][28] (though the first year featured a historic blizzard).[29]
The race is operated by the Brainerd Jaycees and run by a volunteer staff.[30]
The race is certified by the USATF, making it a Boston Marathon-qualifying race.[31] Essentia Health is one of the main race sponsors.[30]
Race weekend
The race weekend is one of the larger events in the Brainerd micropolitan area.[32] It includes the marathon, marathon relay, half marathon, a 10K, a 5K and a kid's 1K race.[33] On the Friday afternoon, the kid's race and the 5K are held.[34] On Saturday, the half marathon racers are bussed to their starting line before the marathon and marathon relay begin. After the races, a small party ensues outside while awards are given in the Nisswa Community Center.[35] Nearly 1,500 runners participate each year in the various competitions.[35][36]
Marathon course
The scenic nature of central Minnesota's lakes and forests set the stage for runners who move over roadsides and a paved path on a two-loop course. The roads, though not closed to traffic, are mostly low-traffic routes. Cones separate the route on busier roads.[30]
The race begins in downtown Nisswa, Minnesota, on Lower Cullen Road, which runs north-south, and is sandwiched between Minnesota State Highway 371 and the Paul Bunyan State Trail. The course starts by going north for a half mile, then turns east for a mile and a half, passing north of forested public land[37] before heading south, moving into Lake Edward Township and going between Clark Lake and Rice Lake.
The route crosses Crow Wing County Road 13 near the unincorporated community of Lake Hubert. Runners continue south, circling the namesake lake (Lake Hubert) clockwise, passing six more lakes. At the south end of the lake, there are a few rolling hills (around miles 7 and 8, which are repeated at miles 21 and 22).[38]
The course moves north on Camp Lincoln Road, past the 100-year-old kids camp run by Grand View Lodge, and turns east on County Road 13 before veering northwest on the Paul Bunyan State Trail and returning to downtown Nisswa, where the half marathon ends and the marathoners go north on Church Street before starting the second loop of the course.[39]
The course ends near the historic Pioneer Village, where runners turn east in a short sprint to the Nisswa Community Center and park ballfields.[33][38][40]
The total elevation gain is about 700 feet, making it a relatively flat course for the region. The course is a certified marathon distance (USATF #MN12093RR).[41]
Prizes
In some years, the first place winner has gone home with $500.[42]
Race history
The first year, 2008, organizers and runners showed up to the start in an April blizzard that dropped nearly two feet of snow on the area.[43][44] But with more than 100 participants, the Jaycees decided to organize it again the next year. The weather was better in 2010, and the annual event remained steady for 12 years before the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic hit. Initially, the race was a single large loop, but in 2011, the race simply repeated the half-marathon course to make a two-loop route. This confused some runners, as they didn't know if they were competing against half-marathoners, marathoners, or marathon relay runners, since they all started at the same time and place.[30] The organizers moved the start line of the half marathon to alleviate confusion.
Runners in the 2011 race were drenched in a cold rain.[45]
Casey Miller, a math teacher and coach at Brainerd High School, has participated in (and won) nearly each year since the 2008 inception.[46] Miller has won the marathon from 2009–10, 2013–14, and 2017 as well as winning the half marathon in 2008. His fastest marathon time was in 2010, when he ran 2:39:49.[47]
Personal trainer Melissa Jansen, an avid marathoner, has won more than any other woman. She was first in 2012-13 and in 2015 while also coming in second in 2008 and 2014.[48]
The COVID-19 pandemic ended the 11-year streak of consecutive marathon runnings. On March 21, 2020, the Brainerd Jaycees announced the cancelation of all the races taking place over the marathon weekend.[49] The organizers hosted a "virtual" marathon event, in which participants could send in their own finish times for a 26.2 distance (as well as times for other available races). Fifty-two people submitted times. The fastest time was submitted by Benjamin Haukoos, from Albert Lea, who ran 2:58:51. The fastest woman was Natalie Timmers from Nelson (3:43:28).[50]
In April 2021, nearly 3 million Minnesotans had gotten at least one COVID-19 vaccination shot.[51] Still, the Minnesota Department of Health continued to issue warnings about large gatherings.[52] Once again, the race was canceled (a decision announced Jan. 26 on Facebook), though runners could choose to sign up and run on their own.[53] Proceeds of the paid entries went to the Brainerd YMCA, which held a race for kids on the marathon weekend.[54][55]
