== Scoring for WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Blitzes/December 2021 ==

Hello Miniapolis,
It was certainly a great experience in participating for the December Blitz 2021. I achieved a Barnstar as well, I am wondering how will I be able to get it on my user page. Would you be able to help me out with that.

Revision as of 19:34, 20 December 2021

This is the talk page for Miniapolis (who is proud to be a Wikipedia editor) and is in fond memory of Corinne, one of WP's very best copyeditors. Although I can be reached by email, I prefer keeping discussions on-wiki as much as possible. Due to time constraints, I no longer accept direct copyedit requests; please list articles requiring copyediting for GAN, FAC and the like on the Guild of Copy Editors request page (and consider pitching in with the GOCE, which can always use more help!) Since I take the occasional wikibreak, feel free to undo any administrative action I've taken as you see fit.

ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:23, 23 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I just wanted to say I'm glad you made this edit. I missed the original post, and wasn't aware. Even though TT and I didn't interact often, I was well aware of his copyedit work, and thought highly of him. Thank you for expanding that RIP post, it's an area that's often ignored, and I appreciate you doing it. — Ched (talk) 20:32, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Ched, and I hope others will expand it too. All the best, Miniapolis 20:37, 1 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Technical news

  • Unregistered editors using the mobile website are now able to receive notices to indicate they have talk page messages. The notice looks similar to what is already present on desktop, and will be displayed on when viewing any page except mainspace and when editing any page. (T284642)
  • The limit on the number of emails a user can send per day has been made global instead of per-wiki to help prevent abuse. (T293866)

December 2021 GOCE Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2021 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the December GOCE newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since September 2021.

                 Current and upcoming events

Election time: Our end-of-year election of coordinators opened for nominations on 1 December and will close on 15 December at 23:59 (UTC). Voting opens at 00:01 the following day and will continue until 31 December at 23:59, just before "Auld Lang Syne". Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

December Blitz: We have scheduled a week-long copy-editing blitz for 12 to 18 December. Sign up now!

Drive and Blitz reports

September Drive: Almost 400,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 27 people who signed up, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

October Blitz: From 17 to 23 October, we copy edited articles tagged in May and June 2021 and requests. 8 participating editors completed 26 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

November Drive: Over 350,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event. Of the 21 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

Other news

It is with great sadness that we report the death on 19 November of Twofingered Typist, who was active with the Guild almost daily for the past several years. His contributions long exceeded the thresholds for the Guild's highest awards, and he had a hand in innumerable good and featured article promotions as a willing collaborator. Twofingered Typist also served as a Guild coordinator from July 2019 to June 2021. He is sorely missed by the Wikipedia community.

Progress report: As of 30 November, GOCE copyeditors have completed 619 requests in 2021 and there were 51 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog stood at 946 articles tagged for copy-editing (see monthly progress graph above).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Dhtwiki, Tenryuu, and Miniapolis.

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

Please explain why you think a specific article needs copyediting

Dear Miniapolis,

Today I found a banner over the article about Elizabeth "Betty" Hayes stating that the article "may require copy editing for grammar, style, cohesion, tone, or spelling." I am the editor who submitted the article, and I've made 98.5% of the edits.

Could you specify why you think the article needs to be copyedited? I do not see any errors in grammar, style, cohesion, tone or spelling.

As the author of six published books and hundreds of published news stories, including 150 in The New York Times, I consider myself a writing professional. I also taught English at the City University of New York for many years. I hope you'll understand that it is my career experience, not my vanity, that gives me confidence in my own copyediting skills. As my most recent book passed through production, the copyeditor employed by my publisher remarked that she found my copy exceptionally clean.

If you could excerpt a few sentences or paragraphs and point out problems, I think I'd be better able to understand your criticism and perhaps address it.

Sincerely, Busypencil (talk) 01:58, 13 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) This article showed up on an semi-automated report of articles with multiple typos and contractions, with the following flagged words: "who'd", "didn't", "who'd", "they'd", "who'd", "isn't", "didn't", "loss.As". Wikipedia has its own Manual of Style, which can differ from the manuals of style for other written works. In this case, the article needs minor cleanup per MOS:CONTRACTIONS. I also cleaned up some curly quote marks, which are discouraged here. Happy editing! – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:36, 13 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Would you consider removing the needs-copyediting banner from article?

Dear Miniapolis,

I hope you will consider removing the needs-copyediting banner from the article on Elizabeth Hayes. Some helpful editors, whom I have thanked, removed contractions, fixed quotation marks, and made other minor corrections.

If this is not sufficient, I hope you can find time to tell me what other areas to work on. Sincerely, Busypencil (talk) 00:43, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like the article has been fixed; feel free to remove the tag yourself. All the best, Miniapolis 02:23, 20 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Scoring for WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Blitzes/December 2021

Hello, I hope you are well. I was wondering if the information is not being updated on the list for the articles and the word count. It still shows 0. Am I doing something wrong here, please guide me a little as I am eager to participate and get some barnstars for the December Blitz 2021. Thank you Charlette9 (talk) 18:11, 16 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
