Füzuli (Template:Lang-hy, also known as Fizuli, Karjagino, Karyagino, or Sardar), is a city and the capital of the Füzuli rayon of Azerbaijan. On 23 August 1993, the city fell to Armenian forces during the Nagorno-Karabakh war and since then has been administered as part of Hadrut Region of the unrecognized Republic of Artsakh. Due to the ongoing war, it is currently an uninhabited ghost town.

History

Once known as Qarabulaq, the village was renamed Karyagino in 1827 to honour Pavel Karyagin, a Russian military hero of the Russo-Persian War. It was renamed in 1959, in honour of the 16th-century poet Fuzûlî. During the 1993 Summer Offensives of the Nagorno-Karabakh War, Füzuli was captured by Armenian forces and - though parts of the Füzuli rayon were later retaken - the city itself remains in occupied territory, essentially a ghost town.
