The Hyundai Genesis (Korean: 현대 제네시스) is a full-size luxury car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2008. It was initially introduced as a concept car in the 2007 New York International Auto Show.[1] Hyundai has introduced the vehicle worldwide, known internally as the BH model, and markets the Genesis as a "premium sports sedan".[2] The Genesis is currently not offered in the EU. A Hyundai Genesis Coupe based on the BH platform was introduced at the 2008 New York International Auto Show and arrived at US dealerships in February, 2009 as a 2010 model.

Hyundai Chairman and CEO Chung Mong-koo calls the Genesis Hyundai's first entry into the European dominated luxury arena.[3] According to Hyundai Vice Chairman Kim Dong-jin, the name Genesis is an indication that the vehicle is the first of many premium cars the company will introduce.[3] The Genesis sedan is a luxury sedan that was designed to compete with the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class, Infiniti M, and Lexus GS.[4] Hyundai targeted 55,000 sales of the Genesis in 2008 (35,000 in Korea and another 20,000 overseas) and 45,000 in 2009,[3] with sales goals of 50,000 per year in the United States - 20,000 sedans and 30,000 coupes.[5] In the U.S., Hyundai sold about 22,000 Genesis (including coupe) in 2009 and just under 30,000 in 2010.[6]

Development and design

Hyundai Genesis Concept

Introduced in March, 2007 as the "Concept Genesis", the sedan was designed by Hyundai as a "progressive interpretation of the modern rear-wheel drive sports sedan".[7] Hyundai conceived the idea for the Genesis in 2003. The body design took three years and the total cost of the program was $500 million over a development period of 23 months. Reliability testing ran for 800,000 miles.[8]

Hyundai reportedly benchmarked the BMW 5-Series (E60) sedan during the Genesis' development; their press release indicates the Genesis body in white exceeds the BMW in torsional rigidity by 14%.[9] The production Genesis sedan received a five-star crash rating in every category from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.[10][11] Hyundai markets the Genesis as offering "the performance of a BMW 5-Series and the interior packaging of a 7-Series at the price of a 3-Series."[12]

Initial version

2009-2011 Hyundai Genesis sedan (US)

Genesis sedan was originally announced in Seoul,[13] and was later unveiled in 2008 North American International Auto Show.[14]

Hyundai manufactures three engines for the Genesis sedan and offers the car internationally with various combinations of the three:

The Tau V8 is Hyundai's first homegrown V8 engine. For the 2008-09 model years, the 4.6 L engine produced 375 horsepower (280 kW) at 6,500 rpm and 333 lb⋅ft (451 N⋅m) at 3,500 rpm.[15] Introduced as a midyear change for the 2010 model, the 4.6 L V8 now produces 385 horsepower (287 kW) at 6,500 rpm, with no change in the torque output: 333 lb-ft at 3,500 rpm.[16] These figures are achieved using premium fuel. The V8 can also run on regular unleaded, in which case the 2010-11 model produces 378 horsepower (282 kW) and 324 lb-ft. For the V8 model, Hyundai has reported 0-60 mph times of less than 6 seconds.[9][17] Car and Driver reports a 0-60 mph time of 5.3 seconds,[18] while Motor Trend reports a 0-60 mph time of 5.5 seconds in their October 2008 issue.

The Lambda 3.8 L V6 is available in Korean and North American models. In Korean spec, the engine produces 306 horsepower (228 kW). In US spec this engine produces 290 hp (216 kW) at 6,200 rpm and 264 lb⋅ft (358 N⋅m) at 4,500 rpm.[15] Motor Trend reports a 0-60 mph time of 5.9 seconds.[19]

The Lambda 3.3 L V6 is available in some markets, producing 264 horsepower (197 kW).

In North America, the V8-powered Genesis features a standard ZF 6HP26 6-speed automatic transmission from ZF Friedrichshafen (identical to the unit found in the BMW 5-Series), with the base V6 models receiving the 6-speed automatic Aisin transmission also found in the Hyundai Veracruz. All three engines can run on regular gasoline, an exception to most high-performance, high-compression engines that require premium fuel.

Standard features on all models in the US include cruise control, automatic headlights, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, leather seat-upholstery and steering wheel, heated front seats with power adjustments, power windows, door locks, and mirrors, remote keyless entry and starting, and a seven-speaker audio system with XM satellite radio.[20]

2013 Hyundai Genesis sedan, rear view (US)

An optional Lexicon audio system offers 7.1 channels, 528 watts output, 17 speakers, two 3-way transducer systems, five 2-way transducer systems and digital signal processing that provides equalization among driver and passengers. The Rolls-Royce Phantom and the Genesis sedan are the only automobiles to offer the Lexicon audio system.[21]

The Hyundai Genesis utilizes a speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering, and comes with four-wheel disc brakes. The suspension is a multi-link setup in front and a 5-link setup in the rear. Weight distribution is 53% front / 47% rear for the V8 and 52% front / 48% rear for the V6.[15]

RIDES Genesis (2008)

It is a version of Genesis sedan with two Mac Mini computers, a MacBook Air, iPod Touch, iPhone 3G, high-speed Wi-Fi internet connection and movie theater-quality surround sound. The trunk enclosed a Mac mini computer, a 20-inch Apple Cinema Display and a motorized tray containing the mouse and keyboard for the rear computer. The center console enclosed the iPhone 3G, Mac Book Air laptop and wireless keyboard and mouse for the Mac Mini mounted on the rear deck. Each passenger in the back seat has their own computer with internet connectivity. The 8.4-inch VGA headrest monitors are wrapped in the original leather to maintain the OE look and feel, while the seats contain suede accents. Other modifications include 22-inch custom-made staggered fitment MHT three-piece wheels with Pirelli tires, custom-molded front body kit and side skirts, lowered suspension and smoked headlights, custom dual-tip stacked exhausts and custom-molded rear bumper, metallic silver and blue body colour.

The vehicle was unveiled in 2008 SEMA Show.[22]

RKSport Hyundai Genesis Sedan (2008)

It is a version of Genesis sedan with supercharged 4.6 Tau MPi engine rated 460 horsepower (343 kW), developed by Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc (HATCI) and RKSport, Inc. It included IHI screw-type supercharger with 11 pounds of boost, cylinder deactivation system, custom body kit, composite hood, rear roof spoiler and trunk spoiler, TSW alloy wheels, Baer brakes, a K&N air intake, Magnaflow exhaust, lowering springs. The car reaches 60 mph (97 km/h) in 4.8 seconds and clicks through the quarter-mile gate in 13.48 seconds at 108 mph (174 km/h). It offers an estimated 18 mpg‑US (13 L/100 km; 22 mpg‑imp) in city and 27 mpg‑US (8.7 L/100 km; 32 mpg‑imp) on the highway.[23]

Genesis Prada (2009)

The Genesis Prada was an extremely limited (3 units) version of the Genesis sedan produced with European fashion label Prada. It was designed at Hyundai's R&D center in Namyang and Prada's Design Center in Italy. The exterior body colour was a matte metallic midnight blue combined with metal parts in titanium, and dark matte plated gold replaced the existing shining chrome for the radiator grille, emblem, and the outer handles. The dashboard and the upholstery were wrapped in Saffiano leather. Other features included a 20-inch alloy wheel and an outer antenna with edge shape.

The vehicle was unveiled in 2009 at the Seoul Motor Show. One car was kept by Hyundai, while the remaining two were auctioned for charity with the intent of donating the income to an institution announced at a later stage.[25][26]

DUB Edition (2008)

The DUB Edition cars were based on the 2009 Hyundai Genesis, with a choice of 3.3 V6, 3.8 V6, and 4.6 V8 engines. Black Genesis included custom pearl white body colour, 22-inch color-matched TIS 12 wheels with 245/30R22 Pirelli tires, custom white leather w/black piping, black suede headliner, suede & leather door inserts, color–matched interior pieces, DUB emblems, tinted windows, custom lowering kit, Alpine DVD head unit system, 2.7-inch Alpine monitors in headrest, Alpine components, custom fiberglass enclosure box, back lit Hyundai & DUB Edition logos. White Genesis models included color-matched exterior pieces, 22-inch color matched TIS:M wheels with 245/30R22 Pirelli tires, custom brown leather w/black pipin, suede inserts on seats, black suede headliner, suede & leather door inserts, color-matched interior pieces, DUB emblems, tinted windows, lowered body, and a DVD system with 2.7-inch LCD screen.[27]

Safety

Standard safety features include dual front airbags, front and rear side airbags, side-curtain airbags, ABS, brake assist, EBD, traction control, and electronic stability control.[29]

Marketing

As part of the US product launch, Hyundai Motor America and Carbonfund.org unveiled the Genesis Forest Project at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show, to offset the entire first year of emissions for all 2009 Hyundai Genesis sedans sold in the United States. The Genesis Forest Project was retroactively applied to all 2009 Genesis sedan sales, which began in June, and continue through the end of the year.[34]

2010 Model Year Updates

New for the 2010, the 3.8 model offers a Premium Navigation Package which provides a less expensive 7-inch touchscreen navigation as an alternative to the more costly Technology Package. The Premium Navigation Package replaces the previous Premium Plus Package which most notably upgraded to 18-inch alloy wheels, still a part of this new package.

For 2010 the 4.6 Genesis was available in only one trim, with all packages made standard, including the Technology package. The car also received a slightly uprated engine as a midyear change, with the 4.6 litre V8 producing 385 horsepower (287 kW) at 6500 rpm and an identical 333 lb-ft of torque at 3500 rpm.[16]

2012 Model Year Update

US model was released as 2012 model year vehicle. Engine choices include 3.8 Lambda GDi, 4.6 Tau MPi (390PS), 5.0 Tau GDi for R-Spec. The transmission was changed to 8-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC. The new front is marked by a revised grille (it is a more updated grille marked in body colors, LED headlamp accents (changed from silver to body-colored), daytime running lights, while new tail lights and new wheel design round up the exterior changes. Genesis 3.8 Premium Package includes newly developed power-folding outside mirrors, rearview camera, DVD navigation system with seven-inch touchscreen, XM NavTraffic, and 18-inch Hyper Silver split-spoke alloy wheels. 3.8 Technology Package adds lane departure warning system (LDWS), thin-film-transistor LCD gauge cluster readout, eight-inch non-touchscreen controlled by rotary knob, front and rear parking sensors, and heated rear seats. Genesis 4.6 includes Genesis 3.8 Technology Package equipment, plus Electro-Hydraulic Power Steering (EHPS), Chrome lower bodyside moldings, Electrochromic auto-dimming outside mirrors, Illuminated door sill plates, Woodgrain-trimmed leather steering wheel.[35]

5.0 R-Spec (2011-)

2012 Hyundai Genesis R-Spec (US)

This model includes the new Tau 5.0 GDi engine, choice of three exterior colors and black interior.

Genesis 5.0 R-Spec includes Genesis 4.6 equipment, plus 19-inch Premium Machined Finish alloy wheels with P235/45R19 tires, Unique headlamps w/dark chrome inserts, Sport-tuned suspension calibration, Unique R-Spec embroidered floor mats, R-Spec rear deck lid badging, deleted Woodgrain from leather steering wheel.[36][37]

Genesis Prada (2011-)

It is a limited (1200 units) version of 2012 Genesis sedan with Tau 5.0 GDi engine (GP500), for South Korea (and later in Middle Eastern and Asian countries, including China) market. Based on the 2009 Genesis Prada car, it included 3 body colours (Black Nero, Blue Baltico and Brown Moro), dark chrome on radiator grille, emblem and door handles; 19-inch alloy wheels, an outer antenna with a wedge shape, the dashboard and upholstery wrapped in "saffiano" leather. [38]

The vehicle was unveiled in Seoul.[39]

Production

Hyundai recalled 2009-2012 Genesis vehicles manufactured April 30, 2008, through March 28, 2012. The vehicles may contain brake fluid which does not protect against corrosion of the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU).[40]

2013 Model Year Update

Changes to US models include:

  • 5.0-liter direct-injected Tau V8 engine now exclusive to 5.0 R-Spec model
  • Standard 5.0-liter model no longer available
  • 4.6-liter V8 no longer available
  • 3.8-liter V6 available in three equipment configurations
  • New optional eight-inch touchscreen display with navigation and an enhanced multi-media controller and Driver Information System (DIS)
  • Hyundai Blue Link telematics available with Ultimate Navigation package

HCD-14 Genesis (2013)

It is a concept vehicle with 5.0 Tau GDi engine, 8-speed automatic transmission, ceramic-lined exhaust, cooling fins integrated into ultra-wide exhaust tips, rear door in rear-hinged configuration, eye-tracking and gesture-based controls, five-link front and rear suspension, multi-mode power steering system, low-profile performance tires, yaw-control system provides multiple driver-selected options for changing road conditions and driving preferences.

The vehicle was unveiled in 2013 North American International Auto Show.[41][42]

Marketing

As part of the Super Bowl XLVII campaign, 1 TV commercial for Genesis R-Spec was developed by INNOCEAN USA was premiered during Super Bowl XLVII. The 'Excited' ad (a 30-second spot premiered during the pre-game show) featured Genesis R-Spec racing around a track as the dramatic play-by-play is voiced sportscaster Gus Johnson.[43]

2014 Model Year Update

The last changes to US models before the new generation was introduced included greater connectivity options via the Hyundai Blue Link interface, some revised controls, a new exterior body colour (Santiago Silver instead of Platinum Metallic), 18-inch wheels as standard on the base model, and Hyundai’'s Assurance Connected Care telematics services are standard for three years on all 2014 Genesis sedans equipped with Blue Link.[44]

The vehicle was unveiled in at a gala ceremony at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Seoul, Korea,[46][47] followed by 2014 North American International Auto Show,[48] 2014 Toronto Auto Show.[49]

Early models include a choice of 4 engines (Lambda 3.0 GDi, Lambda 3.3 GDi, Lambda 3.8 GDi, Tau 5.0 GDi), rear or all-wheel-drive, eight-speed automatic transmission.

South Korean models began pre-sales on 2013-11-26. Early models include a choice of Lambda 3.3 GDi or Lambda 3.8 GDi engine, rear-wheel-drive (2WD) or new HTRAC All-Wheel-Drive (AWD).[50]

US models went on sale as 2015 model year vehicles. Early models include a choice of 2 engines (Lambda 3.8 GDi, Tau 5.0 GDi), optional HTRAC All-Wheel-Drive.[48] The model will go on sale in Europe in early 2015.

Marketing

As part of Genesis launch in South Korea, a series of 8 short films was produced.[51]

As part of Genesis launch in the US, a 30-second TV commercial titled "Dad's Sixth Sense" was premiered during the first quarter of Super Bowl XLVIII. The commercial dramatizes the near-misses and saves of everyday parenting, giving a dramatic demonstration of the all-new Genesis and its Automatic Emergency Braking capabilities – one of the many features included in Genesis' comprehensive suite of safety services, the Sensory Surround Safety System. The 'Dad's Sixth Sense' commercial was developed by Hyundai's agency of record, INNOCEAN USA.[52][53]

Global marketing

South Korea

A full production version went on sale on January 8, 2008 in Hyundai's home market of South Korea. Notably, the Korean market Genesis does not carry a Hyundai badge, only the 'Genesis' emblem.[2][54]

The Korean model is available with a 3.3L V6 producing 264 horsepower (197 kW), and a 3.8L V6 producing 289 horsepower (216 kW).

Hyundai has come under criticism from Korean consumers over the price discrepancy between the US and Korean markets. Yonhap reports the Genesis costs "58.3 million won (US$57,000) in Korea, whereas in the U.S. it sells for $32,000." This has led to dumping allegations[55] and a growing market in reimported Genesises by gray market dealers. Korean regulators are currently investigating whether Hyundai has abused its 75% domestic market share.[56] However, Hyundai cars in South Korea have more available options and that may be the reason for the mark-ups.

North America

Marketed as the Hyundai Genesis in the US and Canada, the vehicle is the largest, most powerful car that Hyundai has ever marketed there before the launch of the Equus.[2]

The Genesis V6 model has a starting price of US$33,800 in USA,[1] while the V8 model starts at US$43,800, including destination charge.[20] According to Hyundai Motor America's current Genesis website,[57] the U.S. engines produce 290 HP for the 3.8L V6, and 385 hp (287 kW) for the Tau 4.6L V8. Power in the 4.6L V8 drops to 378 hp (282 kW) when regular unleaded fuel is used. The 264 horsepower (197 kW) 3.3L V6 variant will not be sold in the United States.

The 3.8 V6 model has standard ESC, fog lights, ABS brakes, an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission, Bluetooth hands-free phone capability, and a push-button starting system. It also offers a Premium Package, which adds a leather-wrapped dashboard and door trims, a power sunroof, a Lexicon 14-speaker audio system with a 6 single-feed CD changer, power tilt-and telescopic steering wheel, a power rear sunshade, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and an automatic defogging windshield. The Premium with Navigation Package requires the Premium Package and adds a 7-inch touchscreen navigation system with backup camera and special 18-inch wheels. The Technology Package offers an upgraded 7.1-channel Lexicon audio system with 17-speakers, ventilated driver's seat, the premium 8" non-touchscreen navigation system, and XM NavTraffic system. This premium navigation system is controlled by a multimedia knob controller by the shift gear rather than by touchscreen.[58]

The 4.6 V8 model offers all the standard features of the Genesis 3.8 model, but adds a woodgrain trimmed steering wheel, 18" wheels, 8" navigation system with backup camera, radar assisted cruise control, and the remaining contents of the V6 Technology Package.

The Genesis sedan went on sale in the US in August 2008. In its first 5 months of sales, the Genesis under-performed in the competitive US market selling only 6,167 units. According to Hyundai, Genesis saw sales of just 1,297 units in its first full sales month and the company expected to move around 8000 units from the US showrooms by the end of 2008.[59] In 2009, the Genesis sold 21,889 units in the U.S. (sedan and coupe combined).[60]

There had been internal discussions within Hyundai about creating a separate brand to feature the Genesis sedan as well as the soon to come Equus sedan in North America, but due to prohibitive costs and potential delays the Genesis and Equus will still remain tagged with the Hyundai brand.[61]

China

Sold as Hyundai Rohens in China, the unveiling was at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, 2008.[62] Sales began in August 2008.[3] In China, the similar "Geniss" name has been registered by Nissan for the long version of Nissan Livina, forced Hyundai to change name.

Europe

According to Hyundai spokesman Oles Gadacz, the Genesis will not be marketed in Europe because of Lexus's failure to thrive in Europe.[63]

According to a September 2007 article in Tradingmarkets.com, " in the eyes of European purchasers of luxury vehicles, Hyundai sedans have been perceived as having a poor image and unreliable durability compared with its rivals."[64] "The planned launch of Genesis comes at a time when Hyundai is striving to shake off its poor-brand image, known for generous warranties and low prices."[64]

The latest Genesis will be sold in Europe. It costs about 65000 euro in Germany.

Latin America

In Latin America, the Hyundai Genesis is sold in Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Chile and Peru, offering versions with engines of 3.3 and 3.8 liters, and in Brazil only with the 3.8 liters engine.

Oceania

Australia will be the first country in the region to get the Genesis Sedan some time in 2014.

Coupe version

A rear wheel drive sports car from Hyundai, dubbed Hyundai Genesis Coupe and sharing the Genesis Sedan's platform and name, was unveiled at the 2008 New York International Auto Show.

Media coverage

The Hyundai Genesis was listed in Motor Trend's 2007 "Top Ten Cars Worth Waiting For"[65] and was featured in TV ads during the third and fourth quarters of Super Bowl XLII.[1] As a part of Hyundai's 'Think About It' ad campaign,[66] the ads suggested the Genesis offers "7-series size, 5 series performance, 3-series price."

During an early review by South Korean reviewer, Hyundai Motor America responded that the South Korean market favors a different kind of large luxury sedan, one that's softer, more luxurious, and more Buick-like; while the North American version would have more sporty suspension.[67] However, even the stiffened model still has much softer feel than Mercedes-Benz E-Class.[68]

Edmunds.com gave the car 9.5 out of 10 points, stating that it features a cabin comparable to a top-of-the-line Lexus, but pointed to lacking "brand cachet" as the main problem.[69] Edmunds.com says “With badges removed, the Genesis could easily pass as a Lexus or Mercedes-Benz, although we doubt many brand-conscious people would give a Hyundai a second glance.”[70] The Hyundai Genesis was named the 2009 North American Car of the Year.[71]

The base Genesis with the V6 engine is priced at $37,995 CAD and competes with entry-level luxury cars such as the Lexus ES 350 and Cadillac CTS, though equipment-wise it is comparable to mid-luxury sedans such as the Lexus GS or Infiniti M. The Genesis with the 4.6-litre V8 starts at $43,995 CAD and its performance is comparable with the BMW 550i and Mercedes E550.[11]

Power,[75] Car of the Year by Autotropolis.com,[75] named AutoPacific ideal vehicle award winner,[76] recognized as a best new model for 2009 by Kiplinger's Personal Finance,[77] Top Safety Award by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS),[31] Cars.com New Car of the Year,[78] Luxury and Value on the Best New Car List by About.com,[79] Car of the Year at the 2009 Urban Wheel Awards by Wheels Media,[80] named a “Top 5 Luxury Car for 2009” & "Car of the Month (April)" & "Best Car Buy" by the U.S. National Automobile Dealers Association (NADAguides.com),[75][81] "Best Bet" awards from The Car Book,[82] MyRide/Autobytel Editors' Choice award,[83] named a consumer guide recommended buy,[84] consumers digest (luxury segment) best buy,[85] America's Top 40 New Cars by Motor Trend,[75] The Genesis was assessed as having the highest residual value by the Automotive Lease Guide while the National Automobile Dealers Association named the Genesis one of the top five luxury sedans.[86][87] According to the editor-in-chief blog of Motor Trend, "Hyundai Genesis: A Car Detroit Can Now Only Dream of Building?", The Genesis came close to winning the 2009 Motor Trend Car of the Year title.[88] USA Today praised that Hyundai proves it's a master of luxury.[89] Hyundai Genesis sedan awarded as the segment leader for the near-luxury car class of vehicles by Strategic Vision.[90] The Genesis sedan was named “Best Deal for the Boss” in the Cars.com annual Best Lifestyle Vehicle Awards.[91] In a survey of over consumers, Hyundai owners placed the Genesis luxury sedan at the top of their classes in AutoPacific's Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSA) research.[92] The Genesis took home "Best Luxury Sedan" in MotorWeek's 2009 Driver's Choice Awards. The Genesis has received a number of well-recognized automobile awards worldwide. Most notably, the Genesis has been named 2009 North American Car of the Year, the first for Hyundai.[93] It also won the 2009 Canadian Car of the Year after winning its category of Best New Luxury Car under $50,000.[75][94][95] It also won the 2009 Car of the Year award by China's Autoworld magazine.[96] The Hyundai's V8 Tau engine in the Genesis, which develops 375 hp (280 kW) on premium fuel and 368 hp (274 kW) on regular fuel, received 2009 Ward's 10 Best Engines award.[97]

Based on automotive journalist reviews, The Genesis received a score of 89% on Seven Car Garage, making it one of the best reviewed cars in its class.
