Ikaroa-Rāwhiti

Ikaroa-Rāwhiti is a New Zealand parliamentary Māori electorate. It was formed for the 1999 election and held by Parekura Horomia until his death. A by-election to replace him will be held on 29 June 2013.

The electorate includes the following tribal areas:
- Ngati Porou - Potikirua ki Te Toka-a-Taiau (Gisborne)
- Te Aitanga-a-Mahaki - Gisborne and Poverty Bay
- Rongowhakaata - Poverty Bay
- Ngai Tamanuhiri - Poverty Bay
- Ngati Kahungunu - Wairoa, Hawkes Bay, Hastings/Napier and Wairarapa
History
The electorate was formed for the 1999 election, which was won by Parekura Horomia.[1]
2013 by-election
A by-election will be held on 29 June 2013 after the death of incumbent MP Parekura Horomia on 29 April.[2]
- The Labour Party selected Meka Whaitiri, CEO of Ngati Kahungunu Inc. to stand.[3][4]
- The Maori Party has nominated tribal leader Na Rongowhakaata Raihania.[5][6]
- The Mana Party has selected Te Hamua Nikora, a television presenter, as its candidate for the by-election. [7][8] The other person who had been considered for nomination was kōhanga reo manager Leon Hawea.[9]
- The Green Party has selected environmentalist and human rights advocate Marama Davidson.[10][11][12]
- The Aotearoa Legalise Cannabis Party has selected lawyer and cannabis law reform advocate Michael Appleby.[10][13][14]
- Two independents are contesting the by-election: Adam Holland and Maurice Wairau.[15]
