K G Suresh is a New Delhi based senior journalist,[1] columnist, blogger, political commentator, Communication Strategist,[2] public speaker, media trainer and educator.[3]
He is presently working as Director General, Indian Institute of Mass Communication – India’s premier media training Institute.[4]
Prior to his current assignment, Mr Suresh served as Senior Consulting Editor with Doordarshan News, India’s national news channel; Editorial Consultant with Asianet News Network Ltd.,[5] a television news channel in southern India; Political Correspondent with Press Trust of India,[6] the news agency; India Bureau Chief of PIO TV,[7] the only web channel dedicated to Non Resident Indians and Group Media Advisor to Dalmia Bharat Enterprises Ltd.
Career
Mr Suresh is a Member of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi; Governing Council, Film and Television Institute of India, Pune; Society of Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute, Kolkata;[8] Board of Management, AJK Mass Communication Research Centre,[9] Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi; General Council of Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism & Communication,[10] Bhopal; Academic Council, Central University of Himachal Pradesh and Governing Council, Institute of Leadership and Governance, The M S University of Baroda.
He is serving in an honorary capacity as Senior Fellow with the New Delhi-based strategic think tank Vivekananda International Foundation; Adjunct Professor at the Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism & Communication, Bhopal, run by the Government of Madhya Pradesh; Visiting Professor with the Delhi Institute of Heritage Research and Management, run by Govt of NCT Delhi;[11] He is serving as Hony. Director with Global Foundation for Civilizational Harmony (India), a partner of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), Director with Indian Media Centre and National Secretary of My Home India, an organization working for people from North East India.
Suresh is a Member of the Board of Directors of Hindusthan Samachar, India’s oldest multi-lingual news agency.[12]
Suresh was designated Commonwealth Youth Ambassador for Peace by Commonwealth Youth Programme,[13] Asia in 2012.
In June 2015, Suresh received the first Khwaja Gareeb Nawaz Global Peace Award 2014, instituted by the Muslim Students Organisation of India, an apex body of Sunni youth and students of India, for his “extraordinary work” for the promotion of love, peace and communal harmony, at the Ajmer Shareef Dargah Campus, Rajasthan.[14]
Suresh is the recipient of Prem Bhatia Fellowship[15] for Research in Media by Young Journalists, Action Aid International's Media For Change Fellowship and the first Srikant Joshi Fellowship instituted by the Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication.
Suresh chaired the international jury of the 4th Woodpecker International Film Festival-2016,[16] India’s premier festival focusing on issue-based cinema and the jury of the 13th edition of the We Care International Film Festival on disability issues 2016. He was on the jury of the National Media Award 2016 instituted by Election Commission of India, CMS-UNICEF Media Fellowship-2016, the National Awards for Excellence in Journalism instituted by the Press Council of India, the UNICEF Radio4child awards 2016, Public Relations Society of India National Awards-2016 & the prestigious Laadli Media and Advertising Award for Gender Sensitivity 2014-15, organized by Population First.[17]
Suresh was the Editor-in-Chief and Member of the International Jury for the Media Colloquium at the prestigious Delhi Sustainable Development Summit -2015, attended by journalists from several countries; a member of the Editorial Board of Experts constituted by the National Book Trust to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, and the only journalist to represent India at the world media conference in Seoul in March 2015, organized by leading US daily, The Washington Times. He also attended the 16th World Sanskrit Conference at Bangkok, June–July 2015.[18]
Suresh was on the international jury for the Plural+ International Youth Video Festival 2012,[19] organised by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations and the International Organisation for Migration. He was the first Indian to be nominated as a jury since the inception of the festival in 2009 and the only South Asian to be part of the 2012 seven member international jury.
He was on the jury of the ‘Duties of a Citizen’ contest, on mygov.in, the Govt-Citizen partnership portal, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ broadcast on December 27, 2015.
Suresh was a Member of the Executive Council of the First World Parliament of Spirituality at Hyderabad, India, in 2012.
He is also a member of the committee set up by the Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication in February 2016 for its project on studying coverage of India related issues in South Asian media.
In November 2011, Suresh along with an expert from WHO, Geneva, conducted a review of the Polio Communication programme for the UNICEF covering Western Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal and submitted a report to all stakeholders including the Government of India. He has conducted media training workshops for institutions such as TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute).
Suresh is considered an authority on right wing politics with his over two decade long experience in covering Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Sangh Parivar organizations. He has also been to trouble spots including Kabul, Kathmandu (in the aftermath of King Birendra's assassination) and Kashmir to cover counter-insurgency operations. He has covered the India visit of Pope John Paul II and US Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
His fortnightly political column in The Pioneer,[20] blog 'Indradhanush' on Zeenews.com[21] and column 'Positive Thinking’[22] in Daily News & Analysis,[23] Mumbai, ‘Political Play’[24] on merinews.com, India’s largest citizen journalism portal are hugely popular.
Suresh is a regular speaker at colleges, universities and other institutions on Swami Vivekananda and media-related issues.

He has travelled across India and the world to cover developments including the Royal Palace Massacre in Nepal, BJP leader L K Advani's controversial Pakistan visit, the tenth anniversary celebrations of freedom in South Africa, the millennium sunrise at Katchal Islands, the reconstruction process in war-torn Afghanistan, the tragic cyclone, earthquake and communal violence in Gujarat, militancy in Jammu and Kashmir and several Lok Sabha and Assembly elections besides a 10-day visit to China in 2014 at the invitation of the Communist Party of China.
Suresh, who holds a master's degree in Mass Communication, has extensively covered the proceedings in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha besides reporting several Union Ministries/Departments including Home, HRD and Water Resources.
Mr Suresh successfully completed a Public Health Journalism Experiential Course at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom.
Suresh has interviewed several important dignitaries including the then Indian Prime Minister I K Gujral, former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, the then Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha L K Advani, Union Minister for External Affairs Sushma Swaraj, the then Vice-President of India Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, the then Defence Minister and Samajwadi Party Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, BJP President Rajnath Singh, and inventor of AK-47 Assault rifle Mikhail Kalashnikov.
Suresh edited Heal-Thy Humour, a compilation of health related cartoons by noted cartoonist Vijay Guglani, which was released by Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar in 2014
Along with other journalists including Rajdeep Sardesai and Aniruddha Bahal, Suresh has contributed a chapter in the book Reporter- a handbook for every journalist, which was released by exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen.
Suresh's chapter on former Indian Prime Minister Mr H D Deve Gowda is a part of Prime Ministers of India: Bharat Bhagya Vidhata, a coffee table book on the 14 Prime Ministers of India so far which was released by the then Union Minister Salman Khursheed.
Suresh has been invited to attend and address national and international conferences including the keynote address on human rights at the LAWASIA International Conference in New Delhi, the Battle of Ideas panel discussion organized by the UK-based Institute of Ideas and the British Council India, the India-Japan Global Partnership Summit in Tokyo, September 2011, the Fourth Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) at Doha, Qatar in December 2011, the Fifth Forum of UNAOC at Vienna, Austria and the Asian Youth Leaders’ Summit, New Delhi, October 2013.
