The following tables present the military ranks and insignia of the Sri Lanka Army. These ranks generally correspond with those of Western or Commonwealth Nations militaries, and reflect those of the British Warrant Officer, Non Commissioned Officer and enlisted ranks and the Commissioned officer ranks. Sri Lanka does have the General rank, it was only awarded to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) or as an honorary rank until 2009. But after successfully finishing the LTTE terrorism, Former Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka was promoted to the rank of general in recognition of service done for eradicating terrorism from Sri Lanka. He became the nation's first-ever field marshal in 2015.
