Power Rangers (billed as Saban's Power Rangers)[3] is an upcoming American superhero film directed by Dean Israelite and written by John Gatins, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, Ashley Miller, and Zack Stentz. The third feature film in the franchise of the same name, it stars Dacre Montgomery, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Elizabeth Banks, and Bryan Cranston.

The film is a reboot and reimagining of the Power Rangers franchise, and the first film since Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, featuring most of the main characters of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers portrayed by a new cast. Franchise creator Haim Saban will return to produce the film under Saban Capital Group. Power Rangers will be released in the United States on March 24, 2017.

Plot

High school students Zack, Kimberly, Billy, Trini, and Jason are chosen by mentor Zordon to become the Power Rangers after learning that their small town of Angel Grove and the world are threatened by an alien force led by Rita Repulsa.[4]

Production

Development

Announced in May 2014 as a collaboration between production Saban and Lionsgate.[23] Roberto Orci was originally attached to produce and Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz were hired to write the script for the film.[24] Orci would eventually leave the project to work on Star Trek Beyond.[25] On April 10, 2015, The Wrap reported that Dean Israelite was in negotiations to direct the film.[26] Israelite told IGN in an interview that the film will be "completely playful, and it needs to be really fun and funny. But like Project Almanac, it's going to feel very grounded at the same time, and very contemporary and have a real edge to it, and a real gut to it, it's going to be a fun, joyful [movie] but one that feels completely grounded in a real world, with real characters going through real things."[27] In July 2015, it was announced that Brian Casentini, Marty Bowen, and Wyck Godfrey would serve as producers for the film.[28][29] Brian Tyler was brought to composer the film.[30]

Casting

Actors began testing for the roles of the five Power Rangers on October 2, 2015.[31] On October 7, 2015, Naomi Scott was cast as Kimberly.[9] Newcomers Dacre Montgomery, Ludi Lin and RJ Cyler were then cast as Jason,[5] Zack,[8] and Billy[6] respectively. At the months' end, Becky G was chosen to play Trini.[7] On October 30, 2015, Saban confirmed that the Rangers would have the same first names as those on the original series.[32] When it came to casting the rangers, director Dean Israelite said, "From the very beginning, diversity was a very important part of the whole process", and that while the races of the characters were switched around, he added that, "we made sure that the essence of each of those characters are who they were in the original show, and this really will be an origin story of those characters.”[33] On February 2, 2016, it was announced that Elizabeth Banks would portray Rita Repulsa in the film.[10] Four months later, Bryan Cranston, who voiced Twin Man and Snizard in the original series, announced he was cast as Zordon.[11][34] Cranston revealed that he will do motion-capture and CGI.[34][35] In September 2016, Walter Emanuel Jones said the none of the original series main cast would be cameoing.[36]

Filming

Filming was originally set to begin on January 18, 2016,[37] but was rescheduled and began on February 29 in Vancouver.[4][38] On May 28, 2016, filming was complete.[39][40]

Marketing

On March 3, 2016, Lionsgate released the first official photo of the five rangers.[33] The following month, the company released the first official photo of Banks as Rita Repulsa.[10] On May 5, 2016, Lionsgate debuted the first official look at suits that the rangers wear in the film. Regarding the new suits, director Dean Israelite stated, "The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis, these suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit", while production designer Andrew Menzies stated that the new suits are "an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans."[41]

On June 22, 2016, the official teaser poster for the film debuted online.[42] Five official character posters debuted on July 14, 2016.[43] USA Today debuted a new image on July 19, 2016, as part of a preview for the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con International.[44] During the convention Lionsgate displayed the helmets and the power coins from the film.[45] The cast and director Israelite also appeared and did several interviews.[46][47][48]

Video game

Saban and Lionsgate are developing a PvP fighting video game in collaboration with nWay Games to coincide with release of the movie.[49]

Release

Originally scheduled for release on July 22, 2016,[50] Lionsgate later delayed the release date to March 24, 2017.[51]

Potential sequels

Jon Feltheimer, CEO of Lionsgate, in a conference call to analysts said "We could see doing five or six or seven."[52][53]
