Puri railway station is a Terminal train station and serves Puri, the sea-shore temple city in the Indian state of Odisha.

History

The Khurda Road-Puri section was opened to traffic on 1 February 1897.[1]

Railway reorganization

The Bengal Nagpur Railway was nationalized in 1944.[2]Eastern Railway was formed on 14 April 1952 with the portion of East Indian Railway Company east of Mughalsarai and the Bengal Nagpur Railway.[3] In 1955, South Eastern Railway was carved out of Eastern Railway. It comprised lines mostly operated by BNR earlier.[3][4] Amongst the new zones started in April 2003 were East Coast Railway and South East Central Railway. Both these railways were carved out of South Eastern Railway.[3]

Doubling of line

The doubling of lines between Khurda road and Puri is completed in 2015.

Busy station

Puri railway station is a busy station handling around 92 trains daily and serving about 138,000 passengers per day.[5] It has 8 platforms (1,1A,2,3,4,5,6,7). Puri railway station is amongst the top hundred booking stations of Indian Railway.[6]

Long journey

The Okha-Puri Express travels for 2,781 km (1,728 mi), one of the longest east-west broad gauge runs in India.[7]

Puri railway station has 4 double-bedded non-AC retiring rooms and 3 four-bedded dormitories.[8] Other amenities include tourist information counter, computerised reservation offices, telephone booths, cloak room, waiting room, vegetarian and non-vegetarian refreshment rooms and book stall.[9]
