St. Barnabas High School is an all-girls, private, Roman Catholic high school located in the Woodlawn[2] section of The Bronx, New York. It is part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York.
History
Founded in 1924 and being at its current location since 1959, the school is located in the Woodlawn section of the borough of the Bronx. It also borders the southeastern section of the City of Yonkers in neighboring Westchester County. Since its inception, the school was founded and has been operated by the Sisters of Charity.[3] As of September 1, 2015, St. Barnabas High School become independent of the St. Barnabas Parish.[4]
Curriculum
St. Barnabas High School follows the New York State Department of Education Curriculum. Some senior electives include Psychology and Personal Finance. [5] The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools [6] The student to teacher ratio is 15:1 with a majority of students going on to colleges or universities.[7] The class of 2015 amassed nearly $7 million in college scholarships with a 100% graduation rate.[8] Additionally, St. Barnabas offers Mercy College (New York) credits for various courses. [9]
Arts
Film
The school has an innovative film department which uses cutting-edge video editing software and equipment to produce their own short films and features. While some students like to act in front of the camera, others like to work behind the camera. The program provides an opportunity for students who have an interest in any aspect of film production.
Music
Every year, the school's music department puts on a music awards show, which is held in the same style of the Grammy Awards. Students write and record their own songs (since 2004, over 125 songs have been recorded and placed online). The songs are placed into categories like Best Rock Song, Producer of the Year, Best New Artist, and Best Group Song and the student body votes to determine the winners. An additional music program includes the St. Barnabas Choir,[10] which consists of students from all over the St. Barnabas parish. In 2016, they were the only school in the archdiocese to be invited to sing for Pope Francis during the traditional date of the Epiphany (holiday), January 6.[11] [12] [13]
Athletics
St. Barnabas High School participates in four sports:[14] basketball,[15] [16]scoccer, softball and volleyball.
Notable alumnae
- Eileen Ivers, a Grammy award winning and Nine Time All-Ireland Fiddle Champion fiddle player [17] and one of the founding members of all the all-female group Cherish the Ladies as well as head of her own band Immigrant Soul.[18] She is regarded by the New York Times as "the Jimi Hendrix" of the violin.[19]

- Denise Richardson, class of 1964[20] a host on WNET Channel 13 in New York City [21] and Director of Communications for the Salvation Army.[22]
