Infobox discussion

[edit]

Hey, there. Lately, there has been some infobox changes I would like to address here.

When I raised up the usage of the education and alma mater parameters on Template talk:Infobox person#Education and alma mater parameters back in December 2023, there was no evidence the alma mater is deprecated and either the "education" or "alma mater" parameter can be used. The relevant guidelines on WP:INFOBOXPURPOSE state "The less information it contains, the more effectively it serves that purpose, allowing readers to identify key facts at a glance." In addition, the subject of the article is not a politician so the Template:Infobox politician template is unneeded.

I personally don't see a problem with using either the education or alma mater infobox parameters, but rather than reverting, I thought I would open the discussion first per WP:BRD. Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 17:33, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with keeping the infobox as {{infobox person}} as his political career is a) not what he's known for and b) doesn't exactly exist outside of a candidacy right now anyhow. I don't have an opinion on the education parameter, other than to say it's not really a major facet of the article so I don't see the pressing need for it in in the infobox either. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs talk 18:44, 3 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see. For now, I removed the education parameter altogether pending additional feedback. Also, for the political party parameter in the infobox, should we keep it or remove it? Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 01:53, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Given he's running for political office, at the moment it's probably germane. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs talk 11:31, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with David on both counts. With respect to the education/alma mater parameter, I think you misunderstood what what Thereq is saying. The infobox instructions indicate to use 'alma mater' when only the highest/most recent institution is listed and to use 'education' when the full training history is listed. Since both Wheaton College and USC are listed, 'education' is preferred. Axem Titanium (talk) 17:20, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Here's the template documentation for reference:
|education=

Education, e.g., degree, institution and graduation year, if relevant. If very little information is available or relevant, the |alma_mater= parameter may be more appropriate.

|alma mater=

Alma mater. This parameter is a more concise alternative to (not addition to) |education=, and will often consist of the linked name of the last-attended institution of higher education (not secondary schools). It is usually not relevant to include either parameter for non-graduates, but article talk page consensus may conclude otherwise, as perhaps at Bill Gates.

Of course, some articles have used either alma mater for most actors and entertainers, or education when their profession is more academic in nature (i.e. Ken Jeong, who has an MD). Also, as what Erik (talk · contribs) pointed out to me in this discussion, it all depends on the individual: for some actors, we only know where they went to school and nothing more, and "alma mater" would be appropriate, but for actors who are very famous, details of their academic background would probably be identified and "education" can be used.
For a video game example, the Nobuo Uematsu article (a GA) lists Kanagawa University as his alma mater since it's the only university he graduated from. However, in the case of this article, O'Donnell graduated from two universities: Wheaton College and the University of Southern California. Given that, we can use education for the latter if needed. If he uses the infobox musical artist as the main infobox, then education won't be listed unless it's set up like Dexter Holland as a module. AngusW🐶🐶F (barksniff) 17:52, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
