Example Map Date[edit]

There is a map cited as "Map of Europe in 1923". The file is labelled as being from 1923, however the US Library of Congress cites its publication date as 1920 and notes that its contributor died in 1921. Regardless, the title seems to be off in a other ways, it would seem older than 1920 from the usage of Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic for all of the USSR [which would be correct from 1917–1922], but older than 1920 from its use of "Irish Free State" [gained independence in 1922]; and older than 1923 from its use of "Leningrad (Petrograd)" [changed in 1924] and "Oslo (Christiania) [changed 1924/5]. Because of these discrepancies, I am changing the caption to "Map of Europe from the 1920s". Petropetro (talk) 19:09, 21 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Partitions of Poland[edit]

There is nothing about three partitions of Poland (the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth) and I think it's important that the biggest country in Europe stopped exiting. Over 990,000 square kilometers. Merger proposal[edit]

I propose that Timeline of country and capital changes be merged with List of world map changes into a new List of historical geopolitical changes page. Both pages have the same objective, discuss and list historical geopolitical changes. With the use of the term "geopolitical", one can add events such as the start of the shrinking Aral Sea and Lake Chad. Also the formation of reserves, artificial lakes, and the geographical changes (Fertile Crescent is currently less fertile than in ancient times). Oppose: The List of world map changes largely duplicates the information in the Timeline of country and capital changes. Nonpolitical geographic changes typically occur over centuries and seldom can be tied to a specific date. The proposed article title List of historical geopolitical changes is also quite nebulous. The Wikipedia article Geopolitics states:
Geopolitics (from Greek γη ge "earth/land" and πολιτική politikē "politics") is the study of the effects of geography (human and physical) on international politics and international relations.^[1] Geopolitics is a method of studying foreign policy to understand, explain and predict international political behaviour through geographical variables. These include area studies, climate, topography, demography, natural resources, and applied science of the region being evaluated.
Instead, I think the proposer means "political and geographic changes." I do appreciate your well-meaning attention to this topic. Yours aye, Buaidh 14:32, 14 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Support: I agree with ERAGON's comments. My only concern is information overload. It would be nice if the reader had the option of seeing just the major changes. States[edit]

Should this include intra-national changes? Like Telangana becoming a state of India? Because if so we'll have to list a *lot* of changes for things like minor changes between US territories (Should we mention that Boston Corner used to be part of Massachusetts? That half of Washington DC was ceded back to Virginia?) I think it should only be supra-national changes; omit anything that exists purely within a single country's boundaries. Support: It would be a really huge list, but it would have all the events in one big list and in chronological order, it would be convenient along with merging other lists of the same thing if you were to use Wikipedia for making a territorial evolution of all of the countries. The headline is "Belgium agrees to hand over splendid stretch of land to their Dutch neighbours... all because of a headless corpse and a body of water". According to the article, "Preparatory work has been done for the swap and the two nations' parliaments should be able to complete a deal sometime in 2016 ...". I agree that this should be noted in List of world map changes, but only after the change is official. Does anyone have more recent information about this? San Marino's inclusion[edit]

While I know the traditional date of San Marino's independence was 301 A.D., is it really appropriate to include it? While I have not read much about the history of the nation, I find it very unlikely that it gained de jure (or even de facto) independence from the Roman Empire (it was in the heartland of the empire, while the empire was relatively stable). --1990'sguy (talk) 03:24, 29 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Why is the list in reverse chronological order?[edit]

Why is the list in reverse chronological order? Is there some wiki rule or standard practice for lists of this type? Btw, the article describes itself as chronological order, but I think it's pretty clear the order is reverse chronological. DrZygote214 (talk) 18:22, 30 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
