WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! POTD for 2023-03-14

Hi Amakuru. Do you have any objection to me swapping the POTD you scheduled for March 14 to the 10th and putting back the Golden Delicious one I had originally scheduled for that date? I had chosen that one as a bit of an easter egg since the blurb talks about pie and the 14th is Pi Day in countries that use the Month/Day date format. --Ahecht (TALK

) 20:46, 6 March 2023 (UTC)

@Ahecht: thanks for the note and that's not a problem, go ahead and swap them back. I find Pi Day slightly on the silly side myself, but that doesn't mean other people shouldn't enjoy it!  — Amakuru (talk) 21:37, 6 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi Amakuru. It was a pleasant surprise to see the file File:Saung-Gauk.jpg up for a POTD. I have begun cleaning up the article associated with the image. I need an opinion. I have been working on User:Jacqke/bow harp which will become Arched harp (now a redirect), the family of instruments to which the Saung belongs. Should I rush to get this ready to be linked-to within the saung article? Or do you think the article has possibilities to draw attention later, maybe featured or as a Did you know? I am working on cleaning it up and finishing sourcing it. Best wishes, Jacqke (talk) 00:48, 9 March 2023 (UTC)

Quick doubt

Hi Amakuru

Is it necessary for the POTD images to be Wikipedia Featured pictures or is it fine if they are Wikimedia featured pictures

-Aviafanboi Aviafanboi (talk) 14:00, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

@Aviafanboi: they do have to be Wikipedia featured pictures, i.e. those that are listed at WP:FP, and have been approved by the editors on English Wikipedia specifically. These are not the same set as are found at Wikimedia Commons or elsewhere, and the requirements are slightly different. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 14:18, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

Invitation to WP:CIII

Hello. Just in case you missed it, there's a task force up at WP:CIII which you may be interested in. There is, of course, no obligation to participate, but if you do, it is very much appreciated.

The link for pervious POTD for April 15, 2023 is not working properly. Could someone go and check then tell me what the problem is. The are other places where this has happened, and I'll go fix it once I get a reply. Aviafanboi (talk) 11:47, 27 March 2023 (UTC)

@Aviafanboi: I have moved some items around, to ensure compliance with the WP:POTD guidelines; in particular, that the entries from one day to the next show a variety of topics, and that we are generally promoting the oldest items first (although some exceptions can apply to this). That said, it doesn't look like April 15 has been moved... the entry there concerns Leonhard Euler. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 14:54, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
Could you tell me what you moved around, so in case it happens again, I can fix it. Aviafanboi (talk) 12:31, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
It has happened again for April 15. Look at the bottom right and you will see that the link is not working as it should.
Note: I changed the POTD for April 14 Aviafanboi (talk) 12:47, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

@Vida0007 and Gog the Mild: thank you for the heads up, excited to see this article featured, I was at the game myself and it was a very special day for those of us who suffer through supporting Coventry City!  — Amakuru (talk) 19:43, 7 April 2023 (UTC)
That's great to know. Cheers!
P.S. I hope Coventry would at least get into the [Championship] play-off spots this year too. Vida0007 (talk) 19:49, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

HMB vs MHS Endeavour replica

I don't know much about naming ships, and don't know what a bark is, but the National Maritime Museum where this thing sits calls it HMB or Bark. Do we care? And have a happy ANZAC day. Dicklyon (talk) 01:57, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

@Dicklyon: like yourself, I'd never heard of a "bark" before I saw this yesterday (and hence was a little WP:ASTONISHed to see such a term in the page title), and I'm no expert on the matter... my reason for moving was simply that the main article itself is called HMS Endeavour, and there's an explicit footnote there stating that while it was technically a bark, and sometimes known as HM Bark, the general decision is to refer to it as HMS. I think that argument applies in equal measure to the replica, per WP:CONSISTENT. Also there definitely are sources which refer to the replica as "HMS Endeavour", e.g. [1] and [2]. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 10:48, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
Well, those refs are for the replica at Whitby, New Zealand. Do people also refer to the replica at Australia's National Maritime Museum as HMS? No big deal either way. Dicklyon (talk) 11:46, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi, I feel your recent move of Magic Slate to Magic slate is not correct. "Magic Slate" is a registered trade mark, see here, hence the use of upper case. Also many of the sources cited in the article refer to it as "Magic Slate", not "Magic slate", see Duns (2013) p.20 and Madison (1966) p.469 and most of the other cited sources, for example this, this, this and this. Please will you reconsider your move. Thank you. —Bruce1eetalk 10:29, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

@Bruce1ee: I was mainly going by the ngram, which seemed to suggest that a lot of book sources don't capitalise the term in running prose, e.g. [3][4]. Per MOS:CAPS, we should only treat it as a proper name if sources also do so... And is this article about a specific product, or a generic class of toy? Looking at Amazon, it's unclear which of the results are for actual branded Magic Slates and which are generic copies. But anyway, since this is going to DYK tomorrow and you've requested for me to revert, I have done so. I may look into it more in a couple of days and possibly file a move request. CHeers  — Amakuru (talk) 10:44, 25 April 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for reverting the move. —Bruce1eetalk 11:03, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

Jay Swingler vs Cherdleys deletion

Can you undelete the Jay Swingler vs Cherdleys redirect that you deleted as a G4? G4 was not applicable. Jay 💬 06:42, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

@Jay: the redirect was created the very same day that the AFD had been closed, and it was closed as "Delete", not "Redirect". If it's that easy to recreate pages as redirects after deletion, I'm not sure why we have the Delete close in the first place... But anyway, since you've requested it, and according to the letter of the policy you're correct it wasn't a recreation of a similar page, I've restored it. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 07:04, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, Chicago PCN02WPS, and London AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth.
