New Page Review - newsletter No.3

Hello AntiCompositeNumber,

Voting for coordinators has now begun HERE and will continue through/to 23:59 UTC Monday 06 March. Please be sure to vote. Any registered, confirmed editor can vote. Nominations are now closed.

Still a MASSIVE backlog

We now have 818 New Page Reviewers but despite numerous appeals for help, the backlog has NOT been significantly reduced.
If you asked for the New Page Reviewer right, please consider investing a bit of time - every little helps preventing spam and trash entering the mainspace and Google when the 'NO_INDEX' tags expire.

A message from Elkrite

Hi AntiCompositeNumber,

You recently sent me a message welcoming me to the Wikipedia community. I'm glad to be here and hope that I can contribute a lot more in the future. I understand Wikipedia's mission to provide quality content, and I would very much like to work in the spirit of the community.

One of the projects I have been working on recently is updating the Wikipedia page for the University of Connecticut School of Business. A few days ago, there was merely a paragraph copied from another source as an entry. There was no infobox and other important information. I found this needed to be updated because other Schools of Business have a more in-length pages, including some other flagship public universities like UMass and Penn State. There are also other UConn Schools with more in-depth pages.

To be completely honest, this is the school I am attending at the moment, so I can see how there could be COI, but I tried to work exceedingly neutral in my edits pretty much matching the other School pages. I was hoping that you could help me ensure that this page is up to the Wikipedia standards, and if needed help me improve the page to adhere to all necessary guidelines.

Your advice, assistance, etc is greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Elkrite (talk) 22:15, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

@Elkrite: Hello! I noticed the images that you were uploading while I was patrolling the listing of new files, so I'll take the time to explain a few things about files on Wikipedia. As far as Wikipedia is concerned, photos, logos, and other images and files fit into one of two buckets: "free" and "non-free." A free file is a file that someone has specifically licensed so that anyone can use it for any reason, with few restrictions. A non-free file is a file that doesn't meet that definition.
So how does this relate to your uploads? The four photos you uploaded were not released under a free license, and someone else could take a photo that does the same job. Seeing as you are attending the school right now, you could use a smartphone or other camera to take a picture of the building! When you're done, you can upload the file to Wikimedia Commons, a sister project to Wikipedia that hosts free files. Speaking of Commons, I tagged one of the logo images you uploaded for deletion because I found a better quality svg version of the file. Because the logo consists of only simple text, it is ineligible for copyright protection, so I uploaded it to Commons. I'll take a look at the page in a bit, and if you have any questions feel free to let me know. --AntiCompositeNumber (Leave a message) 22:47, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply! That makes sense and I will keep it in mind for the future. I can definitely take my own pictures and upload them. Whenever you get a chance, please let me know if you have any other advice/suggestions for the page, etc..

Is File:IPad 2017 tablet.jpg just a cropped version of File:IPad2017image.png? They look very similar and you can see the shadow on the left side... the top-right corner is the same as well... Thoughts? Thanks, Corkythehornetfan (ping me) 19:58, 6 April 2017 (UTC)

@Corkythehornetfan: They do look similar, if you ignore the fact that the Apple image is at a much lower resolution. --AntiCompositeNumber (Leave a message) 20:02, 6 April 2017 (UTC)

If you've got a source, you can edit the page and insert the information. You should make sure to cite the source, using the guide at WP:REFBEGIN. Hiya, I just would like to let you know that I declined the first link as it returned a 404 error, but the other two I was leaving open. However, I think there's a bug in the review helper which ignores multiple links and only acts on the first. All was in good faith! Osarius - Want a chat? 14:07, 25 April 2017 (UTC) Osarius - Want a chat? 14:07, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

@Osarius: Yeah, that review helper is broken in more ways than it works. You should do it manually, as the helper script does not remove the DNAU template, so requests would not get archived. Don't forget about PD-logo, and that logos for drafts can be indefinitely held. Thanks for your help! --AntiCompositeNumber (Leave a message) 14:28, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

A message from Waynezimsr

Hi,

I sent some info re: an article on John Zacherle last year, and just today logged on to Wikipedia to make an edit about something else and discovered your message to me from December. At this point in time, I don't remember what the Zacherle edit/comment I submitted was, but if you inform me of it I can reply to you in more detail(now that I understand a little bit more about Wikipedia). I'm not very computer savvy, so if you don't mind contacting me on my e-mail that would be great. (Redacted).

Th edit I want to make today is in the article about theatre organs. It is stated that the original name of ATOS (American Theatre Organ Society) was ATOE (American Theatre Organ Enthusiasts). That is NOT correct. The original name was AATOE (American Association of Theatre Organ Enthusiasts). I had a window decal on my Ford back in the late 1950's/early '60's. with the AATOE letters on it. I'll be 73 this coming May, and joined the theatre organ worldfor a LONG time. Thanks. Wayne C. New Page Review - Newsletter No.4

Hello AntiCompositeNumber,

Since rolling out the right in November, just 6 months ago, we now have 818 reviewers, but the backlog is still mysteriously growing fast. If every reviewer did just 55 reviews, the 22,000 backlog would be gone, in a flash, schwoop, just like that!

But do remember: Rather than speed, quality and depth of patrolling and the use of correct CSD criteria are essential to good reviewing. Do not over-tag. Make use of the message feature to let the creator know about your maintenance tags. See the tutorial again HERE. Get help HERE.

Stay up to date with recent new page developments and have your say, read THIS PAGE.

A message from Ken

Hey AntiCompositeNumber,

I saw you reverted my edit in the Electric dipole moment wiki page. My correction was based on what I believe to be a factual flaw in the wiki page, and so is not non-constructive. I feel reverting the edit is a disservice to wiki users, as it's just a flat out false statement in its original form. I will be changing it back once more, unless you send me a message convincing me otherwise. Thanks.

131.215.166.112 (talk) 20:25, 27 May 2017 (UTC)

I reverted because your edit changed two instances of "Cloud" to "Butt." If you are using the Cloud to Butt extension, you'll have to turn it off to edit Wikipedia. Happy editing! --AntiCompositeNumber (Leave a message) 20:30, 27 May 2017 (UTC)

Why don't you tell me when vulgarity should be in an article and what point there is in including it on the article about Ozzy Osbourne. I think polling editors on here would be a good move or changing the article back to how I had it. There's no useful purpose to quoting him exactly. Why don't you review how mainstream media would handle interviews, etc. Bleucheeses (talk) 11:15, 9 June 2017 (UTC)

User:FlightTime/Talk page watcher @Bleucheeses: Considering Wikipedia is not censored, profanity, nudity and the such can and will be anywhere, the only question is, is the said content appropriate to the page it is on. Further information can be reviewed here: Wikipedia:Offensive material - FlightTime (open channel) 23:56, 9 June 2017 (UTC)
@Bleucheeses: Pretty much what FlightTime said. The manual of style asks that we keep quotations as close to the source as possible, including when a vulgarity or obscenity is quoted. After looking at your edit again, I believe that the words "fucked up" are integral to the meaning of the quote. If we take any other word from wikt:Category:English swear words, the quote loses it's meaning. I get high, I get shit... what the hell's wrong with getting shit? There must be something wrong with the system if so many people have to get shit... says something quite different. If you'd like other opinions, you're welcome to make your point at Talk:Ozzy Osbourne. If you've got any other questions, feel free to let me know here or jump into the live help channel. --AntiCompositeNumber (Leave a message) 00:26, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

Hello AntiCompositeNumber, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 18,511 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a a day.
  • Some editors are committing to work specifically on patrolling new pages on 15 July. If you have not reviewed new pages in a while, this might be a good time to be involved. Please remember that quality of patrolling is more important than quantity, that the speedy deletion criteria should be followed strictly, and that ovetagging for minor issues should be avoided.
