Khmer personal names

Hi again. I noticed this edit earlier today and decided to drop you a quick note about Khmer naming customs. Forgive me if you're already aware of them. Khmer don't have "family names" as Westerners do. Historically, they only used a given name. In modern times, they also use their father's first name as a disambiguator that has become a de facto surname, but it is not a "family name" as it is only shared by siblings. So in this case, "Nimol" is her given name and "Chhom" would be her father's given name. Individuals are properly called by either their given name only or their full name, but never by what we would consider their "last name". In fact, as it is practically taboo to call an elder by their given name, Khmer people often take offence when called only by their "last name" (i.e. their father's name).

I'm not aware of any policy regarding this on Wikipedia, but in the past we have tended to avoid using last-name-only references. See for example Hun Sen where he is referred to by his full name throughout, and Sinn Sisamouth, where is is mostly referred to by his first name (Sisamouth). @WilliamThweatt: Thanks for the input; I will not pretend to be an expert on this topic. But note that Wikipedia has this: Template:Cambodian name, which I used at the top of the Chhom Nimol article. That template uses the term "family name" and it appears to be poorly equipped for the complex matters that you described. Someone with your knowledge could possibly adjust how that template works. As for Chhom Nimol, I have seen/heard American interviews in which the interviewer tries to be friendly by calling her Chhom, and she simply replies that her first name is second. Thais are often called "the polite people" but Khmer society could give them a run for their money with intricate rules of etiquette (ranging from how/where to sit to how to walk to "saving face" during conversations) that are ingrained literally from birth. The example you gave is typical; pointing out the interviewer's faux pas or showing irritation would have been a worse breach of etiquette than the original offence. Regarding the template, I did notice it specifically because it has been changed since the last time I had occasion to use it. The documentation at Template:Cambodian name still notes the preferred Khmer usage, but I have a hard time believing that editors read the documentation every time they place a template. The template itself used to include similar wording but it seems to have been changed in 2015 with this edit. I will change it back.--William Thweatt ^TalkContribs 07:01, 8 February 2018 (UTC)

Circular reference

Hi. Please remember that per WP:CIRCULAR, "Do not use articles from Wikipedia (whether this English Wikipedia or Wikipedias in other languages) as sources. Also, do not use websites that mirror Wikipedia content or publications that rely on material from Wikipedia as sources." @Thinker78: I am completely aware of all that. Note in the article's talk page that the whole thing is a work in progress and I asked for assistance in finding better sources. @Thinker78: Just so you know, there is a growing body of articles on Cambodian rock musicians of the 1960s-70s, a scene of great interest to geeky rock historians. Information about the musicians' lives and accomplishments was largely lost during the Cambodian genocide and enthusiasts have been slowly cobbling it back together by general consensus, but of course online sources are copying each other. This problem was noted at Sinn Sisamouth with a "refimprove" tag for 5 years before I started working on it. The circular reference and its associated info was all over the various articles for years, and I have been rearranging the info in preparation for more research. My explanation for your basic question is "Wikipedia is not a final draft," and you noticed my partially-complete actions over a few days on an article that was an absolute disaster for many years. ---DOOMSDAYER520 (Talk|Contribs) 15:34, 24 March 2018 (UTC)

By random chance I happened upon the article when you were editing. If I had come upon the article before you I probably would have removed those circular references, because it makes no sense using as a reference the version of the article of 2007. Question regarding edits to 2 Cool 4 Skool

Hi Doomsdayer520! I noticed on the page 2 Cool 4 Skool you made the infobox type an EP. The problem is that the album isn't an EP, but rather a single album. I noticed your explanation for the changes was "fixing non-standard infobox", so is there any way to make it standard without having the infobox falsely display that it's an EP? Thanks! @Nyantatata: Sorry for the delay, I was off the grid for about a week. There is a group of Wikipedia volunteers called the Albums Project in which album articles are categorized via the fields in the infobox, and HERE you will see the agreed-upon album types. ------ It is my understanding that long ago, the folks in the project decided that the old and general term "EP" could be used for albums that are described as "single album" or "mini album" in some regions. (For instance, I have only ever seen the term "single album" in Asian pop, but I could be wrong.) If it's an album that is shorter than usual, the term "EP" is a nice general category. If you find that to be inaccurate or outdated, you could raise the issue at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Albums. ------ Note that all of this only applies to the infobox, and you could use the term "single album" in the article's main text. Sources for albums

I would like to respond to your message to EddieHugh because I have a lot of experience using AllMusic (I subscribe to it) and some experience working with EddieHugh. He doesn't need me to say so, but I have never questioned his integrity or his diligence. He is also patient, which many people on Wikipedia (and off) are not. I don't know anything about the example raised, but I do know that AllMusic often makes mistakes, not merely on release dates but on all other matters, such as labels, personnel, song credits, song titles, and so on. Moreover, much of their material is inchoate. EddieHugh once suggested that it's because they have a small staff. Possibly. Sign of the times: too much information, too much work, too few people, too few competent people. Jazz is unpopular. I imagine most resources are spent on more popular music. This is true everywhere else, so why wouldn't it be true at AllMusic?

According to Wikipedia rules, these sources can't be used: Amazon, itunes, Discogs.com, Musicbrainz, RateYourMusic, Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud, LastFM, because they are retail sites or because they rely on user-generated content or both. The best source for an album is probably the album itself, and yet many liner notes and album covers have mistakes. That means we rule out perfection and accept fallible sources and try to come as close to accuracy as we can. For years I've been looking for a better source for release dates of albums. I've written about this subject quite a bit and have exchanged posts about it with EddieHugh and others. If you have a solution, I'm eager to hear it.

@User:Vmavanti - Thanks for the input. I have merely disagreed with Eddie's logic in one particular article, and have full respect for his knowledge and professionalism. Regarding this general topic, personally I find it illogical to assume that sources that made some mistakes in the past can never be trusted ever again. See WP:ALBUMS (The Albums Project) in which AllMusuc has been deemed reliable and essential for info on hundreds of thousands of album articles. In the event of uncertainty in an AllMusic entry, other sources can be used for corroboration. For the album in which Eddie and I disagreed, there is an announcement from the record company's own website that gives that album's release date. Your concerns, and Eddie's, about source reliabiity are valid but for that particular album a whole bunch of outlets say it was released in 2010. What's not to believe? I use AllMusic all the time, but I get exasperated at the number of mistakes. You can submit corrections to AllMusic. There's a form on the site with the usual caveats. AllMusic is owned by Tivo. I would like to know where Tivo gets its information. I put the following on my User Page as advice for possible sources:

• The album itself
• The musician's official web site
• The record label's web site
• Billboard magazine or web site
• DownBeat magazine or web site
• JazzTimes magazine or web site
• A book, such as a biography, about the subject
• A book about the record label
• AllMusic.com

Just to clarify...

...I thought your own comments were sensible and just on the AfD even if I disagree with your conclusion. I follow AfDs about articles of women (even though I am of the male persuasion, it turns out to be a good place to find material that belongs in our project and can qualify with a polish.) I am more interested in women scholars and academics and techies and politicians than in entertainers, but if I have some spare time I will try to improve those as well, if they seem notable.

Nearly all of the AfDs I read are well-reasoned, and I agree with the nominator. I do have a special resentment, triggered by this particular AfD, of nominators and others who treat bio subjects with undeserved contempt, in this case ostensibly because the article is badly written by amateurs--first the AfD nominator spending 8 paragraphs mocking the subject of the bio, and the very next commenter calling her "this chick." I did not intend to criticize you or other helpful commentators, even those who disagree with me. Your talk page or mine seems a better place to discuss this, if you want to, than anybody's AfD. @Godsy: - While doing the research for my vote in the Timothy Heller discussion I found that every magazine article, album review, etc. that mentioned Timothy was actually about Dresses, and said much more about the band. Therefore I suggested that an article on Dresses might be more viable than an article on an individual member. But that article, if you create it, would have to stand on its own merits too. I think they might be able to squeeze into a few of the requirements for WP:NBAND such as #1 and maybe #4, but I can't guarantee that everyone else would agree. ---DOOMSDAYER520 (Talk|Contribs) 18:07, 22 July 2018 (UTC)

Delsort to country

Isn't it agreed that music and books are sorted into the country category where it's released. At least that's what I take of it based on the United States delsort discussion. Also, the music album was related to music so why was that sorting undone? PS. I've looked at the Delsort WikiProject and it says to sort deletion into relevant categories. Is there something I'm missing? @Tyw7: Sorry for the delay in this response. The Delsort Project has guidelines but not hard-and-fast rules. You are missing the spirit of delsorting, in which AfDs are sorted toward communities of editors that are able and willing to add their expertise to deletion discussions. For example, the Deletion Sorting page for Malaysia is probably patrolled by experts on that country who can discuss the merits of articles about that country, such as politics, history, geography, etc. That Westlife DVD is not about Malaysia just because it was released in that country, and while you sorted the AfD discussion to five countries plus the continent of Asia, what about all the other countries in which it was released? It's a worldwide media product released in dozens of additional nations, so your delsort was not only heavy-handed but also incomplete. That's why delsort should be used sparingly.

Meanwhile, my example of the Malaysia-related deletion discussions page doesn't have much happening, but any Malaysia expert is likely to ask why the AfD for an international DVD is cluttering up their page. Hkhohh got in trouble for this, including at the Bands and musicians page where he/she was putting AfDs for albums that were released by bands, fictional characters in TV shows about music, actors who play fictional musicians, etc. I and the other regulars on that page found all of the non-musician AfDs placed there by Hkhohh to be annoying and distracting. That's why the delsort process is supposed to be used sparingly, not for the fun of sorting AfDs to as many discussion pages as you can think of. What are your thoughts on a WP:NAVBOX? My first thought was, now that we have an article about everyone on Cambodian Rocks, to base it on that, but that would be pretty unusual. @Rhododendrites: - I think a navbox might be useful but the articles are pretty far-flung and you are correct on how it would be tough to articulate the focus. We've been blue-linking all the associated articles to the best of our abilities and that should suffice for now. What I would really like to see is for Music_of_Cambodia#Mid-twentieth_century (which you and I have discussed before) to be fully expanded or even spun off into its own article, similar in quality to Cambodian Rocks, but we will probably need actual Cambodians to help out and none seem to be interested.

Note that in addition to Cambodian Rocks we now also have articles for almost everybody specifically profiled in Don't Think I've Forgotten except for Baksey Cham Krong and Pou Vannary. June backlog drive

Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.

New technology, new rules

• New features are shortly going to be added to the Special:NewPagesFeed which include a list of drafts for review, OTRS flags for COPYVIO, and more granular filter preferences. More details can be found at this page.
• Probationary permissions: Now that PERM has been configured to allow expiry dates to all minor user rights, new NPR flag holders may sometimes be limited in the first instance to 6 months during which their work will be assessed for both quality and quantity of their reviews. This will allow admins to accord the right in borderline cases rather than make a flat out rejection.
• Current reviewers who have had the flag for longer than 6 months but have not used the permissions since they were granted will have the flag removed, but may still request to have it granted again in the future, subject to the same probationary period, if they wish to become an active reviewer.

Editathons

• Editathons will continue through August. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

The Signpost

• The next issue of the monthly magazine will be out soon. The newspaper is an excellent way to stay up to date with news and new developments between our newsletters. If you have special messages to be published, or if you would like to submit an article (one about NPR perhaps?), don't hesitate to contact the editorial team here.

@Cm613: - Articles with those various tags about notability, original research, etc. appear on lists perused by other editors, and someone following that path may decide that the article is not appropriate for Wikipedia. Sorry if I gave the impression that I might do such a thing myself, I merely meant to point out that it could be possible. If nobody else objects to the article then you will be fine. @A5: - Actually, what happened is that I am part of a Wikipedia team that reviews new articles for suitability, and when we click a field the system shoots you an automatic message titled "Ways to improve..." which may not have been the most accurate title in this case. At the time, the formatting of some of the references needed to be cleaned up, which a different editor did. @JMKgreatgrand: - My recommendation is to add a brief statement to the end of the Writings section. Since those documents have not been published, listing them is not exactly encyclopedic. @JMKgreatgrand: - See Wikipedia:Citing sources for everything on citations; it takes a lot of practice, but in the future you can always call on interested persons for assistance. At the J.M.K. article it looks like another editor has already helped out with formatting the footnotes. Meanwhile, the tags like "Orphan" and "Citations Needed" are simply code that can be edited like anything else. I will remove the Orphan notice. NPR Newsletter No.13 18 September 2018

Hello Doomsdayer520, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

The New Page Feed currently has 2700 unreviewed articles, up from just 500 at the start of July. For a while we were falling behind by an average of about 40 articles per day, but we have stabilised more recently. Please review some articles from the back of the queue if you can (Sort by: 'Oldest' at Special:NewPagesFeed), as we are very close to having articles older than one month.

Project news

• The New Page Feed now has a new "Articles for Creation" option which will show drafts instead of articles in the feed, this shouldn't impact NPP activities and is part of the WMF's AfC Improvement Project.

As part of this project, the feed will have some larger updates to functionality next month. Specifically, ORES predictions will be built in, which will automatically flag articles for potential issues such as vandalism or spam. Copyright violation detection will also be added to the new page feed. See the projects's talk page for more info.

• There are a number of coordination tasks for New Page Patrol that could use some help from experienced reviewers. See Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Coordination#Coordinator tasks for more info to see if you can help out.

Other

• A new summary page of reliable sources has been created; Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources/Perennial sources, which summarizes existing RfCs or RSN discussions about regularly used sources.

Moving to Draft and Page Mover

• Some unsuitable new articles can be best reviewed by moving them to the draft space, but reviewers need to do this carefully and sparingly. It is most useful for topics that look like they might have promise, but where the article as written would be unlikely to survive AfD. If the article can be easily fixed, or if the only issue is a lack of sourcing that is easily accessible, tagging or adding sources yourself is preferable. If sources do not appear to be available and the topic does not appear to be notable, tagging for deletion is preferable (PROD/AfD/CSD as appropriate). See additional guidance at WP:DRAFTIFY.
• If the user moves the draft back to mainspace, or recreates it in mainspace, please do not re-draftify the article (although swapping it to maintain the page history may be advisable in the case of copy-paste moves). AfC is optional except for editors with a clear conflict of interest.
• Articles that have been created in contravention of our paid-editing-requirements or written from a blatant NPOV perspective, or by authors with a clear COI might also be draftified at discretion.
• The best tool for draftification is User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js^(info). Kindly adapt the text in the dialogue-pop-up as necessary (the default can also be changed like this). Note that if you do not have the Page Mover userright, the redirect from main will be automatically tagged as CSD R2, but in some cases it might be better to make this a redirect to a different page instead.
• The Page Mover userright can be useful for New Page Reviewers; occasionally page swapping is needed during NPR activities, and it helps avoid excessive R2 nominations which must be processed by admins. Note that the Page Mover userright has higher requirements than the NPR userright, and is generally given to users active at Requested Moves. Only reviewers who are very experienced and are also very active reviewers are likely to be granted it solely for NPP activities.

List of other useful scripts for New Page Reviewing

Twinkle provides a lot of the same functionality as the page curation tools, and some reviewers prefer to use the Twinkle tools for some/all tasks. It can be activated simply in the gadgets section of 'preferences'. There are also a lot of options available at the Twinkle preferences panel after you install the gadget. In terms of other gadgets for NPR, HotCat is worth turning on. It allows you to easily add, remove, and change categories on a page, with name suggestions. MoreMenu also adds a bunch of very useful links for diagnosing and fixing page issues. User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js(info): Installing scripts doesn't have to be complicated. Go to your common.js and copy importScript( 'User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js' ); into an empty line, now you can install all other scripts with the click of a button from the script page! (Note you need to be at the ".js" page for the script for the install button to appear, not the information page) User:TheJosh/Scripts/NewPagePatrol.js(info): Creates a scrolling new pages list at the left side of the page. You can change the number of pages shown by adding the following to the next line on your common.js page (immediately after the line importing this script): npp_num_pages=20; (Recommended 20, but you can use any number from 1 to 50). User:Primefac/revdel.js(info): Is requesting revdel complicated and time consuming? This script helps simplify the process. Just have the Copyvio source URL and go to the history page and collect your diff IDs and you can drop them into the script Popups and it will create a revdel request for you. User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js(info): Creates a "Page Curation" link to Special:NewPagesFeed up near your sandbox link. User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/deletionFinder.js: Creates links next to the title of each page which show up if it has been previously deleted or nominated for deletion. User:Evad37/rater.js(info): A fantastic tool for adding WikiProject templates to article talk pages. If you add: rater_autostartNamespaces = 0; to the next line on your common.js, the prompt will pop up automatically if a page has no Wikiproject templates on the talk page (note: this can be a bit annoying if you review redirects or dab pages commonly).

@RoseCherry64: - Actually there is no set policy on this, but in the event of different cover art being available, "common practice" is to use an image from the product most likely to be available to the public, and I figured that would be the square image from a CD or iTunes page, etc. There would be no dispute if you'd like to re-upload the cassette image, but the square image is more likely to comply with what we see in other articles for recent albums. Scratching the Door: The First Recordings of the Flaming Lips Redirection...

So as far as I can tell, you are trying to redirect the page Scratching the Door: The First Recordings of the Flaming Lips to the main Flaming lips article because it doesn't meet Wikipedia's Notability guidelines. While I do understand your concerns, it's not like there aren't a bunch of other Wikipedia album pages that are just like that. Also, the source that I cited was a pretty good one. Even if it isn't, why not just expand the page yourself with better sources instead of trying to redirect it? In fact, I actually found a couple good extra sources myself that I will now use.
