Blanking[edit]

Hey, from your message, it shounds like your accusing me of being a vandal, thats not the case. The Uruguay rugby team, was already blank, someone created it and set up a redirect to the Uruguay union, which is a different thing.

So, true, I should have added a stub notice, but they way it was, was wrong. They are different subjects entirely, so removing the redirect was a good move, in my opinion. Cvene64 06:01, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I did not accuse you of being a vandal. There is actually a vandal template for blanking which I specifically did not use. Removing the redirect was not a good move as the link I provided in my note to you indicated. There are ways of resolving issues like this that does not leave someone at a blank page. Listing an incorrect redirect for deletion is easy. See the other link I gave you. If you need help listing it, let me know. -- JLaTondre 15:05, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. I do not have the time to list anything right now, alternatively, leave the redirect, I will write the page in a couple of days if I can. Cvene64 15:11, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I regret not having followed the protocol. But, Judicial Process as a redirect to Civil Procedure was highly unjustifiable. Legal process can be considered suitable for the moment. I will soon be writing an article on the concerned subject. --Andy123(talk) 06:35, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Page Blanking[edit]

On 14-Mar, you blanked Arizona and Eastern Railway. Blanking pages is generally considered a bad idea. I've reverted it to the previous version. If this was the result of a broken edit, you may wish to make the correct edits. If you believe the page should be deleted, please follow the deletion procedures. If you believe different content should go there, please create a stub. If you have questions, please let me know. Thanks! -- JLaTondre 04:30, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If it was blanked, that was my mistake. It was supposed to redirect to Arizona Eastern Railway. The railroad does not exist with the "and" in its name. I will place the redirect back in. Rhallanger 12:30, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
We all make mistakes. Thanks for redirecting it to the right place. -- JLaTondre 15:05, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your notification.. I did indeed blank The Bishop´s Avenue, a page that I had created. It was a duplicate and there were crosslinks. I´ve never deleted anything previously and I thought someone like you would find me out....et voilá IsarSteve 08:20, 5 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Blanking Neighbours Briggs[edit]

Hello there,

OK, so I may not have done the right thing by blanking the page Neighbours Briggs. But Neighbours Briggs isn't a real TV show. This is why I blanked the page originally & why I have moved that that page be deleted.

Thewiikione 05:30, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blanking is not the same as deleting. Blanking leaves the article & it's history present. If it's a hoax, it should be deleted so that it's actually gone. Using prod was a better solution. However, when you marked it for deletion, you didn't provide a reason. Instead of prod, it's better to put your reason. You did add hoax as well so that does help, but it's always good to make it clear why you think something should be deleted as some people put the burden of proof on the person doing the nomination and will vote keep if reasons are not provided. -- JLaTondre 10:55, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Little Johnny Taylor[edit]

You recently left a note on my page castigating me for blanking the redirect from Little Johnny Taylor to Johnnie Taylor. I have followed your advice and listed the redirect on the RfD page, stating the reason for the redirection was that the two are different people. However, I need to ask why you didn't just list the redirect on RfD rather than reverting my blanking as all you did was readmit incorrect information into Wikipedia, which (I'm sure you would agree) can't be good for the project. --Roisterer 08:41, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Castigating? I'm sorry you felt that way. It was meant to be informative. As for why I didn't list it, I have no idea if they are the same person or not. The creator obviously thought they were. You disagree. That's the point of deletion review - to get community agreement on the right answer. Since you are the one who wants it deleted, it's up to you to make the case for deletion. -- JLaTondre 11:26, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding "IIndiana University—Purdue University Indianapolis":
Oops, my bad, I speedied it as an implausible typo (created by pagemove error) and forgot to say so. I got sidetracked trying to figure out why the hell the target article had an &emdash; instead of a hyphen. — Mar. 30, '06 [12:39] <freakofnurxture|talk>

The fact that you blanked it instead of sending it to RfD does show that you needed the tip about blanking. The fact that you called the editor who made the redirect an "idiot" in your summary shows that you needed the tip about WP:CIVIL. The fact that you have replaced my message on your talk page with "Read and removed due to it being a moronic message" shows that you still need the tip about WP:CIVIL. Mistakes happen - we all make them. Please learn from yours. -- JLaTondre 12:57, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gambotto redirecdts[edit]

hi, These are valid redirects and, I suppose, don't cause any great harm but I feel they are unncessary. The Giancarlo_Gambotto → Gambotto → Antonella Gambotto-Burke seems particularly pointless. Dlyons493 Talk 19:44, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The double redirect should be fixed if kept. I meant to make a note of that and forgot. I've added that, thanks. I'll agree that the redirects probably won't be used much, but in general, the votes on RfD error towards keeping redirects if there is a chance that someone might type it in while looking for a page. If you read over the RfD page, you'll see even more unlikely ones being kept. -- JLaTondre 21:51, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You don't need AfD to do a merge. You can edit the article to be kept to add any unique information and then redirect to the duplicate to it. You might wish to tag them for merger and discuss it on the articles' talk page first if you think there might be controversy. See Wikipedia:Merging_and_moving_pages for more information. Question about SP2 RfD closure[edit]

Hi J,

I'm wondering how my SP2 deletion request was closed so early and why. I thought it had to stay for one week or so. Furthermore, we have 2 votes: one for deletion (mine), one for redirect. How could the result be "redirect"? --Gennaro Prota(talk) 06:38, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The result was not "redirect". It was converted to a disambig page. If a redirect can have multiple meanings, then it should not be a redirect and should be a disambig instead. Ignoring the Service pack and Windows XP entries, there are still other valid meanings for SP2. Therefore, it needs to be a disambig page. The inclusion of the Service pack and Windows XP entries on the disambig page then becomes an article content issue and no longer an issue for RfD. Early closings of RfD discussions happen when the answer is obvious per policy (speedy deletes, speedy keeps, disambig). The same as with all other deletion processes. Let me know if you have further questions... -- JLaTondre 13:05, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I understand now, and know something more about Wikipedia policies :). "Redirect" was a lapsus linguae (actually, lapsus digitorum :)), I meant "disambig", of course. Thank you very much for your work. --Gennaro Prota(talk) 23:44, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RFD's[edit]

I appreciate your help at Wikipedia:Redirects for deletion, and I've noticed you've located a lot of redirects that got tagged but never listed. In the future, feel free to revert unexplained or frivolous taggings rather than listing them. In particular, I'm referring to straightforward speedy keeps such as Bio-diesel → Biodiesel. Rather than being bound and chained to process, you might do better to use your own instinct, especially in the absence of any plausible rationale for deletion, at least until such time as you get reverted, or receive a complaint on your talk page, then go ahead, assume good faith and list it. — May. 18, '06 [05:51] <freak|talk>

Why was Liancourt Rocks moved to Dokudo?[edit]

Liancourt Rocks is a topic that South Korea is discussing as Japan. South Korea insists on Dokuto. Japan insists on Takeshima. This topic became Liancourt Rocks from a neutral viewpoint. Please explain the reason why you adopted the insistence of South Korea. Liancourt Rocks is a name to prevent the edit battle by a lot of articles. Please explain the reason why you denied Liancourt Rocks. The edit battle will start by a lot of scenes if you do not make the Japanese and the South Korean consented.

--Kamosuke 11:09, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure how clearer I could have written my closure statement & edit summary. I suggest people actually read what I wrote. The RFD closure for Liancourt Rocks is unrelated to what should be the correct name of the article. RFD is simply the wrong place for this. If you want the page moved, follow the directions at Wikipedia:Requested moves. As I had nothing to do with the rename, you will have to ask your other questions to those involved. Please make use of page histories and user contributions instead of making assumptions. Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks. -- JLaTondre 13:54, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please look at the length of Talk. TalkPage of Liancourt Rocks has the long discussion. As a result, South Korea and Japan agreed with Liancourt Rocks. I regret that you restarted the edit battle of South Korea and Japan. --Kamosuke 14:50, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As I said, please make use of page histories and user contributions instead of making assumptions. I did not start anything. I am not the one who renamed it and I am not the one who nominated the redirect for deletion. My only involvement has been to close a misguided redirect deletion request. RFD was not the place to bring this argument. Saying "this is not the place to fight, go fight over there" is not the same as picking a side in the fight. I have made no statement regarding what is the correct title and, not having been involved, I don't really have an opinion. -- JLaTondre 15:05, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I am an unremarkable self-appointed volunteer scholar with no true scholarly credentials or real success in life. Like many in my sordid little semi-anonymous cyber world, I proudly serve this website.

Here is what a true scholarly and trusted authority says about me and my ilk:

“I think it’s exactly the right price,” said Michael Ross, senior vice president of corporate development at Encyclopaedia Britannica Inc. in Chicago. Major articles in Britannica are signed by the author; all articles are vetted by an experienced team of editors and scholars. The libraries that pay $1,500 for a set of bound volumes or the family that pays $60 a year for an Internet subscription are buying confidence as well as information. … Ross admits to reading and enjoying Wikipedia, and has even gotten ideas there for future Britannica articles. But the absence of traditional editorial controls makes Wikipedia unsuited to serious research. “How do they know it’s accurate?” Ross asks. “People can put down anything.”.. Norsecore page blanking[edit]

Hi, sorry about the page blanking with the Norsecore article. I didn't realize that that qualified as page blanking since the the only thing on the page was a redirect to "Grindcore." I'll write a stub for Norsecore, since I don't know too much about it, but I do know that redirecting to Grindcore is incorrect. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Karpsmom (talkcontribs) .

Deleted Redirect on Gary Hinman.[edit]

You apparently think I should not have removed an inaccurate re-direct from Gay Hinman to Charles Manson. Do you mistakenly think they are the same person? If you'd like to write an article on Gary Hinman, feel free to do so, rather than putting re-directs back in that are incorrect. You having put this re-direct back in is somewhat like putting in a re-direct from Lauren Bacall to Humphrey Bogart. People with something in common, perhaps, but not the same person, and not meriting a re-direct, rather only a reference. Cheers! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ejteltschik (talkcontribs) .

Blanking a page is not the same as deleting. If you think this redirect is invalid, then nominate for deletion per the directions I provided. While Gary Hinman is not the same person as Charles Manson, Gary Hinman is discussed at the Charles Manson page. Redirects are not used simply when two items are the same. They are also used when a topic does not have it's own article, but is discussed in another article. Gary Hinman fits that model. -- JLaTondre 13:16, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bagyo + Baguio + Typhoons[edit]

Hi, I really don't know what to do with this entry, Baguio, as it is incorrect. Original author who wrote the stub and divided it from the entry Baguio City has already been challenged to present proof of validity but has still not come up with anything. I have already suggested that he develop the entry in bagyo. His main assertion is "Baguio (spelled bagyo in Filipino) is the local name given to any typhoon...", local name being the primary bone of contention. The word Baguio as a translation of bagyo is not used locally in the Philippines, either by textbooks or the PAGASA national weather bureau. Please advise. --Haldamir 23:27, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, but I don't have a recommendation for you as I don't know the topic well enough. You may want to visit Portal:Philippines and query one of the folks who have edited there. They might be able to help. -- JLaTondre 00:33, 12 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know whether to praise you or curse you. :-) That makes it much more useful, but it also makes it much more work. I'm starting at the end and working my way back. I'll figure I'll see more new stuff that way. Thanks for doing the work. It's definitely beneficial. -- JLaTondre 23:00, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ready?[edit]

Drop a note, and I'll draft it... - CrazyRussian talk/email 04:46, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • After you answer the questions and accept, please adjust the date/time and list it at WP:RFA. Good luck! - CrazyRussian talk/email 06:30, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • I answered the questions and listed it. No matter how it goes, I'm thankful for the confidence you have in me and the praise you gave in your nomination statement. Sorry it took a couple of days to respond, but you picked the one time I was offline. :-) Thanks again! -- JLaTondre 01:02, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • 's ok! Did you take a long weekend trip? Come to think of it, I don't even know if you're American! :) - CrazyRussian talk/email 01:05, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
        • Yes, I'm an American. Unfortunately, nothing so fun as a long weekend. I just ran out of time, but I'm enjoying the day off today. -- JLaTondre 13:41, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
So you were nominated by a commie, huh? That is fitting for a scumbag like you because you and those you are associated with are wiki-Stalinists! Thought you might find this link very interesting 3. -JLaFuckYOU

blanking Atherinidae[edit]

Yes, I did blank the Atherinidae redirect. I could not see the point of redirecting a family of fish to an article on a cut of meat. There is no connection - if you think there is a connection could you please let me in on the secret  :-) GrahamBould 13:15, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blanking is not the same as deleting. As I said in my note, "If you believe the redirect should be deleted, please follow the redirect portion of the deletion procedures" If you believe an article should be written instead of the redirect, please write a stub. There are appropriate ways of dealing with issues like this. Blanking is not one. Also, in future, please be sure to place discussion a person's talk page and not their user page. -- JLaTondre 13:37, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reverting pageblanking[edit]

I just tagged several pages as db-blanked before I saw those pages, so (because original author blanked these pages too in a similar manner) I thought they wanted them deleted. Anyway, I added those pages to my watchlist after listing them for prod, so I saw your correction immediately and of course agreed with it. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion, next time I'll check their contributions - somehow it just didn't occur to me that they'd do a cut-and-paste move. Thanks again. --Zoz (t) 16:52, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Most times it's a single author so it doesn't really matter. -- JLaTondre 20:31, 9 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Robert Adams, Jr.[edit]

Hello,

Thank you for fixing the re-direct on the Robert Adams, Jr. Article. As you can see from its History Page I struggled with it. I'm still trying to get a handle on some of the techincal elements of editing in Wikipedia. I'll get there (hopefully without crashing the entire site).

Regards,

No problem. If you have questions, let me know. -- JLaTondre 01:33, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Grunion[edit]

I am not sure what happened, but in your recent edit [4] of the grunion article, a chuck of text was deleted at the end of the article. I've restored the deleted text. Does you browser have any problems with large articles? BlankVerse 10:16, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ugh, I think I get hit by the Google toolbar bug. I thought I had been pretty careful in watching for that, but it looks liked I missed it. Time to disable the toolbar and go back to the mozdev version. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I'll double check my other edits last night. -- JLaTondre 11:00, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Congrats[edit]

Congrats on the successful RfA! Isopropyl 00:57, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Impressive speed :) But definitely congrats, JLaTondre. After a very impressive showing of comunity support in your RfA, you're our newest admin. Be conservative with the new tools, especially at first, and re-read the relevant policies before acting. Otherwise have fun using the tools to make this a better place, and don't hesitate to ask if you need anything. - Taxman Talk 01:03, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks all! I appreciate the vote of confidence that the RFA participants gave me and your congratulations as well. I'm going to skip spamming everyone's talk page, but my thanks do include everyone involved. -- JLaTondre 11:04, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Page Blanking[edit]

Ok, I'll keep that in mind. Thank you. Esaborio 02:04, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Worthy use of your new admin powers[edit]

Congratulations on your recent granting of admin powers. I would like to draw your attention to a worthy use of those powers - the closing of copyvio reports listed on WP:CP. As you'll see there are many tens of such reports that need dealing with each day, and the backlog is barely being kept under control despite a couple of us spending lots of time working on them. The process is pretty easy and sorting a few only takes a little time and with a group of people helping, we can keep the backlog under control easily - just review the article & the source to ensure it is a copy, and then delete. Any help would certainly be appreciated - any questions, ask away. Kcordina Talk 09:07, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
