What is the consensus on the "coaching tree" section within coach articles? I know there has been dispute about it within the wikiproject, and you're reverting edits, so I figured I'd ask?--MooseBurgers511 (talk) 18:49, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

Question regarding a potential article creation and original research[edit]
Hey Jweiss. I'm asking for your two cents on whether or not a potential article of mine would violate any of Wikipedia's policies on OR. The list-style article would document the transfer of wins since the first recognized intercollegiate football game in 1869. I struggle to explain the concept, so I'll give you an example. In 1869, Rutgers defeated Princeton 6 to 4. A week later, Princeton got revenge and beat Rutgers 8–0, therefore becoming the first winner of winners, or as I call it a "WOW". Princeton lost in 1876 to Yale, and so Yale become the new winner of winners because they defeated Princeton which defeated Rutgers. The title returned to Princeton in 1878 when they defeated Yale, and the new sequence would be Princeton as WOW because they beat Yale which beat Princeton which beat Rutgers (and so on).
This lineage of games continues all the way to the present day and has been held 317 times by 100 different schools, ranging from the most well known programs like your own Michigan Wolverines (who gained the title 8 times) to teams lost to history like the West Coast Army, San Diego Marines, and the Olympic Club... even UTEP won it once from Southern Miss in the 1954 Sun Bowl. Alabama is the current WOW, taking the distinction after beating Auburn in the Iron Bowl.
Now, I could find a primary source for each of the 317 contests to decide a WOW champion, and obviously I could not use the term "WOW" because I created it, but would this still violate OR because the concept is original? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Murphanian777 (talk)

1959 Michigan team[edit]
Not sure if you noticed, but Michigan football made the Main Page today with the DYK hook "... that when the 1959 Michigan football team (pictured) defeated Ohio State, opposing coach Woody Hayes whirled and hurled pieces of clothing, drawing a comparison to a 'hot stripper'?" (Unfortunately, it got stuck in the Sunday overnight DYK slot, so it's unlikely to garner a lot of page views.) In any event, I have a vague recollection that you mentioned once that your father attended UM in the Noskin years. I hope that he and his fellow late 50s Wolverines can now enjoy a fuller account of the 1959 team. One by one, we are whipping the Michigan team/season articles into shape. Thanks for helping bang out the individual, cited Louisiana Tech articles! I should have the 1990s done later this week, and then all of the decade articles can be either redirected or deleted altogether. I previously did the same for ECU after citing and separating into individual articles, and redirected the decade articles. If you want to AFD them, please feel free. - Patriarca12, thanks for the note. I continue to appreciate your consistently excellent work. I plan to AFD the Louisiana Tech decade articles once the individual seasons are complete. Those article titles don't serve much practical purpose as redirects as they are fairly implausible search terms. I've been chipping away at the early Louisiana Tech years. Problematic category move[edit]
This was apparently pushed through as a speedy back in June, however it has resulted in hundreds of historical player articles (like George Brown (gridiron football) and Nat Dye) being listed anachronistically under Category:Edmonton Elks players. Compare to what was done for the Washington Football Team, where we have Category:Washington Redskins players and Category:Washington Football Team players (as well as the older Category:Boston Redskins players and Category:Boston Braves (NFL) players). I've been in a small edit war with a couple of editors who keep on changing 2021 New Mexico Lobos football team to a redirect. It's the only 2021 FBS football team that it is being done to despite other teams having only 1 source. College football coaches & WWI[edit]
Hello, Jweiss11! I've been diffusing Category:American military personnel of World War I into subcategories and have come across several dozen college football coaches that have the category but no mention or reference to any WWI activity. I noticed you were usually the person adding these categories, but unfortunately this was a decade ago or more. The body of Bob Higgins (American football) states that he served in World War I, but the branch isn't specified. A quick search on Newspapers.com didn't provide clarity. Dickinson "Red Devils"[edit]
There are various places where the Dickinson sports programs are referenced as the "Red Devils". This racially offensive nickname was adopted in the 1930s and has been abandoned by the school which now uses the nickname "Blue Hawks" for its sports programs. Swarthmore "Garnet Tide"[edit]
Another example of a modern nickname being applied retroactively to historic seasons. "Garnet Tide" is a relatively modern name. The historic name in earlier years was "Quakers". I changed it on the 1905 Swarthmore Quakers football team, but there's a ton of work that needs to be done to fix things. Not sure if you want to work on fixing this but I thought I'd check. Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.
Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.
At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.
There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.
Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Connecticut State[edit]
In this diff, you changed "Connecticut State" to "Connecticut". While there might be some issue as to whether the common name in 1920 was "Connecticut State" or "Connecticut Agricultural", it was not commonly referred to simply as "Connecticut". A good place to check for the proper school and fights name of the time is the standings templates you can find on season articles like 1926 college football season. See Template:1926 Nebraska College Athletic Conference football standings, from which you can cut and paste {{cfb link|year=1926|team=Nebraska Wesleyan Coyotes|title=Nebraska Wesleyan}} and similar for South Dakota Mines at Template:1926 South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference football standings. Montana State[edit]
There was previously a discussion where the consensus was to rate college football season articles as "mid" importance for the CFB project. Consistent with that consensus, I've rated season articles for Division I FBS Montana State as "mid". You've been changing my ratings on Montana State and downgrading them to "low". Not sure what the logic is behind that, especially since you've been rating far less significant seasons of your own creation as "mid" (e.g., 1953 Shaw, 1897 Wash & Lee, 1955 Howard, 1915 Buffalo, 1955 Eastern Illinois, 1955 Western State). - The consensus at Wikipedia:WikiProject College football/Assessment was to rate I-A/FBS articles as mid by default, FCS as low by default, and to bump up a level for conference champs and two levels for national champs. A couple questions[edit]
I just added 1925 West Tennessee Teachers College (changing from West Tennessee State Normal) in this year. Can you make sure I have titled the page correctly as this name is used until the 1930's. Similarly with Central Tennessee as it did not have an official mascot until the 1930's and was named a teachers college until then as well. Also, Arkansas State changed from First District Aggies to First District A&M Gorillas. Also I saw you changed the University of Tennessee College of Medicine to the Tennessee Docs football team. For that, I thought we were using the school name rather than the school and nickname for the title...can you clarify?....Pvmoutside (talk) 19:23, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
- Pvmoutside I renamed those articles as 1925 Middle Tennessee Teachers football team and 1925 West Tennessee Teachers football team. That appears to better represent the common usage in contemporary newspapers accounts. As for Tennessee Docs, those articles are titled as 1923 Tennessee Docs football team and the like. When linking to such team articles in schedule and standings tables, the display name needs reflect how the article is titled. Generally, fight names are dropped and just the short name is used for the display. But "Tennessee Docs" is a special case because dropping the Docs would create ambiguity with the Tennessee Volunteers. A similar case is "Cal Aggies", as UC Davis was known from 1922 to 1958. See, for example, 1958 Cal Aggies football team and the articles that link to it. Dropping the Aggies there would create ambiguity with the California Golden Bears. Western Kentucky University[edit]
My next project is to change Western Kentucky University based on our Wikipedia page...they currently use the current name of the university all the way back to 1913. Our Wikipedia page refers to the school as:
- Western Kentucky State Normal, 1913-1921
- Western Kentucky State Normal & Teachers, 1922-1929
- Western Kentucky State Teachers, 1930-1947
It looks like the mascot "Hilltoppers was used throughout... ~⁓~~

I appreciate the enthusiasm, but your jumping into articles minutes after I create them risks edit conflicts. It's happened many times, and I just lost 10 minutes of work on links at 2011 Whitewater. Thanks for taking up the CCNY challenge. The sourcing I found did not indicate the school was known by the acronym "CCNY" in the 1870s, nor was there any indication of a "Lavender" nickname. - Spf121188 thanks for reaching out and for your work in the Shepherd articles. As I think you've noticed, I moved your draft of the 2015 Shepherd Rams football team into the mainspace and did some cleanup and improvement. Pay particular attention to using endashes and not hyphens when punctuating won–loss records and scores; see WP:DASH. Also, you want to employ Template:Cfb link when referring to a specific team season, as in the the schedule table. This template will link to the main program article (which may be a redirect), if the specific season article does not yet exist. If an article were to be created for say, 2015 Charleston Golden Eagles football team, use of {{cfb link|year=2015|team=Charleston Golden Eagles|title=Charleston (WV)}} will automatically point to that new article and then a bot will hardcode the link to the new article a few hours later. Any article on Wikipedia should have third-party sources (i.e. source independent from the subject itself0, and this is particularly important on articles for sub-Division I season articles whose notability often comes into question. You can see I added a reference from The Baltimore Sun for the 2015 championship game. References to Shepherd's own resources are good for added detail, but they should used in concert with third-party sources. Also, you want to avoid citing bare URLs and instead format the references substantively using templates like Template:Cite news and Template:Cite web. If you want to continue to build out the 2015 Shepherd article with game-by-game details, the "Game summary" section of an article like 2021 Michigan Wolverines football team is a good model. Hello Jweiss11, since you seem to be one of the best editors in CFB topics, and Cbl62 is away, I'll go to you for this: do you think the 1902, 1903, 1904, and 1905 Tusculum Pioneers football team articles are notable? - BeanieFan11, in cases like these where you have a minor football program playing a season with only one or two games, often against non-college opponents, these would better be served by decade/era articles rather than individual season articles. Win % in coach infoboxes[edit]

- Because it's never been the standard/consensus to include it. It just started leaking in from edits by newbie/flyby-type editors.
