WikiCup 2021 July newsletter

The third round of the 2021 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 294 points, and our top six scorers all had over 600 points. They were:

  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 1825 points from 3 featured articles, 44 featured article reviews, 14 good articles, 30 good article reviews and 10 DYKs. In addition, he completed a 34-article good topic on the EFL Championship play-offs.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius, a New York specialist, with 1083 points from 2 featured article reviews, 18 good articles, 30 DYKs and plenty of bonus points.
  • Republic of Venice Bloom6132, with 869 points from 11 DYKs, all with bonus points, and 54 "In the news" items, mostly covering people who had recently died.
  • England Gog the Mild, with 817 points from 3 featured articles on historic battles in Europe, 5 featured article reviews and 3 good articles.
  • Hog Farm, with 659 points from 2 featured articles and 2 good articles on American Civil War battles, 18 featured article reviews, 2 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 4 DYKs.
  • Zulu (International Code of Signals) BennyOnTheLoose, a snooker specialist and new to the Cup, with 647 points from a featured article, 2 featured article reviews, 6 good articles, 6 good article reviews and 3 DYKs.

In round three, contestants achieved 19 featured articles, 7 featured lists, 106 featured article reviews, 72 good articles, 1 good topic, 62 good article reviews, 165 DYKs and 96 ITN items. We enter the fourth round with scores reset to zero; any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (one contestant in round 3 lost out because of this). When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Arbitration

Happy Birthday!

Thanks! Feel free to have some of my cake! Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 10:49, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

British Open random draws

Hi. Please suggest a method for listing the Main Draw on the 2021 British Open article: WST have stated that the draws will be random for every round [excluding the final ofc], so the current "regular knockout" format we currently use will not work. My thoughts are to just do a draw page like the Qualifying section on other tournament pages. I'm only reaching out directly because article talkpages are getting no response from other regular editors. Thanks. --CitroenLover (talk) 17:41, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

Oof, really + the only other event that does this is the Shoot Out. Realistically, after the tournament, it would be suitable to have the brackets in, but maybe not during the event. Awkward. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 18:44, 9 July 2021 (UTC)
Sounds good. Probably best to wait until the Round One draw is released before doing anything.
On a different topic, having to deal with 1-2 anon IP editors who are revert warring on the 2021-22 snooker season page and have now taken to abusive language when reverting edits. I'd like someone to step in and solve this dispute because I'm not really getting anywhere using talkpages [although thankfully Betty Logan helped to support on the Project talkpage]. --CitroenLover (talk) 14:11, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
You'll notice I already left them a warning on their talk. I'm fully aware of what is going on, if it keeps edit warring despite the talk; drop it to WP:RfPP Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 14:15, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
Oh, I didn't even notice the warning, oops! I only just got back to checking the wiki haha. Thanks! --CitroenLover (talk) 14:16, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for your question and support at my RfA

My activity level isn't something I've over managed in the last ten years, largely going on gumption available. It's a fair question and a soft one, frankly. I've been a contributor here but never a superactive one. Do think my habits will fit in well with admin habits. Anyway, thanks. If my trust is ever in doubt, I'll count on my earliest supporters to come straight to me about it. Please call me on my stuff. BusterD (talk) 16:16, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

This may be lifting back the curtain a little bit, but I assumed that this question would come up regardless, so I thought it best to get it out there instead of users questioning it. Good luck with the bit, let me know if you need any help, or want to write some great content :). Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 16:55, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

DYK for 2019 Northern Ireland Open

On 13 July 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 2019 Northern Ireland Open, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Mark Selby took more time over a single shot at the 2019 Northern Ireland Open, than the fastest ever maximum break? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/2019 Northern Ireland Open. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, 2019 Northern Ireland Open), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Wheels of Aurelia GA

Hello. This is very late, but I just wanted to say thank you for all the work you put into the Wheels of Aurelia article and for bringing it up to GA status. I did GAN reviews for it in the past, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was a GA today. Aoba47 (talk) 19:26, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Random snooker player redirects

Hey Lee. So i noticed that there are some snooker players, for example Jimmy White, which have seemingly redundant redirect url’s that i’ve accidentally linked in pages, thinking that the name is common enough for someone else to be named that way on the wiki (eg Jimmy White (snooker player)). I feel like these redirects don’t really add anything, but i realise the wikipedia policy is not to fix not-broken redirects. Any thoughts on this? —CitroenLover (talk) 22:09, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

The thing to look at is - is the redirect holding up an article? For Jimmy White (snooker player), there is no other notable snooker players called Jimmy White, so it's fine. The redirects do exactly what you'd expect of them. If they are the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, then the person doesn't need a disambiguation, such as White, John Higgins, Steve Davis etc. However, when linking, or searching you might not know where the article is based, so having the disambiguation as a redirect is often helpful. We shouldn't really kill off redirects as they are WP:CHEAP, and you don't need to "fix" redirects per se, but if you see: [[Jimmy White (snooker player)|Jimmy White]] in articles, feel free to change the link to just [[Jimmy White]]. I hope that is of some help. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 08:16, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
That helps a lot. Cheers! I'll probably need to make a list somewhere of articles that have disambiguated redirects that lead to a non-disambiguated page, probably in a sandbox or similar so that its easier to reference for me at any time [since I'll probably edit lots of snooker articles over this season and perhaps the following season if time allows]. :) --CitroenLover (talk) 08:29, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, it's often difficult to know imperically. I have a script that makes links green if they are redirects which helps me. That way when you press preview the green ones are redirected articles. Only issue is that doesn't tell you when you link to say Joe Perry, and that's not where our article is. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 08:39, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
