Trottski

[edit]

I'm still beavering away when I get a chance; there seems to be some discrepancies in the sources about some minor stuff, particularly as to how long he spent in Bendigo. Pleae keep checking the format of the refs, that's not my strong point. I hope to finish the c-e soon so you can go to straight to FA.

Phanto282 (talk) 07:53, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah! You rumbled my game ... that is OR to link the omission of Albert to a falling out with Harry, but I have never seen it mentioned anywhere, so I have carefully complied with OR requirements by the juxtaposition of several facts, allowing the reader to draw their own conclusion. I have done all the reading I was going to do, so I will finish in the next couple of days if time permits.

Phanto282 (talk) 06:55, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well done ... apologies, but I'm not around much anymore, so I didn't see your msg. I liked the story about the hat and the bath. Between Trott and Darling, there seemed to be a lot of nuding it up in the Aus dressing room in the 1890s, lol.

Many a drunken night spent in that pub in my younger days. I'm on the wagon nowadays. I see you have uploaded a few images to the Daylesford, Victoria collection on Commons. [edit]

Hi Matt, thank you for your note, I have left my opinion at the article however I have not read the policy you refer to so I am only going by your and Rebecca's interpretation of the policy. If need be I'll look at the policy and give a more well researched opinion however this would not be for a few days. I can definitely see your point though and wouldn't be surprised if you end up being correct and my being incorrect. Cheers, WikiTownsvillian 16:01, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. There was an OTRS complaint that Daniel got about this. A student from PAC, Hill's school, complained that "the local Methodist school" was derogatory and wanted to add us to whack in a bit about PAC being one of Adelaide's most prestigious. Hi, I notice you removed someone's edit re her current date. I believe it was said on tonight's (Monday 9 June) Australian Story. I'm not going to put it back as I couldn't swear by it - all I remember is that she's moving to Perth to be with her footballer boyfriend whose name I think was Brett (you can see how much I know about football)...and I'm not sure anyhow whether a person's current "date" is important encyclopedia fodder!Sterry2607 (talk) 13:07, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bot for WPAus locations

[edit]

What is wrong with having a bot create a stub for places? That locatilities To-do list is probably less than 5% of the total. Lots of these places are small towns far away. Would you rather have someone toil to collect the basics like population, postcode, electoral division, climate data, templates and categories, when these basic facts and editing tasks can be automated? If these hundreds (if not thousands) of remaining Australian towns and settlements were created then other editors would be more likely to check backlinks, add notable facts, photos, citations, etc. I thought that this bot proposal was compatible with WPAustralia's goals. Don't assume it isn't going to be accurate, its just upgrading a set of places whose articles are non-existant to stub class. - Shiftchange (talk) 03:05, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly I am philosophically opposed to force-growing the encyclopedia in this manner. Bots are great for performing midless repetitive edits, not so much for things such as creating articles. The job of finding details on postcodes, population, electorates, etc. isn't not a straightforward as one may think and I see the potential for huge amounts of unchecked error. This will take time to firstly find and fix and in priniciple, I feel that a non-existent article is better than one that is chock-full of errors. Secondly, I abhor sub-stubs; articles that consist of one or two sentences, an infobox and a navbox. A blue link is a promise to a reader that the information on the linked page will be relevant and useful. These bot-generated articles fail on both counts. At least a red link is honest and says that we have nothing relevent on the topic at present.
I have written plenty of stubs on small Australian places and will continue to in the future. I am in the process of adding infoboxes to Queensland towns, having already done Vic. and Tas. ( ). So I understand some of the drudgery involved. Even so, I am opposed to the project as a whole and especially so here in Australia—where we have plenty of editors to create the articles in a competent, diligent manner and where the problem of systemic bias surely doesn't exist. -- Mattinbgn\talk 09:23, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Having investigated this situation more fully it seems that the three of you Mattinbgn, Longhair and Matilda belong to your own cabal now - all apparently having been informed by your grandmother (or similar) to mind your own business in this way. Unfortunately, as I have never been told to mind my own business by anyone (let alone my grandparents) I am unable to join up (*said with fingers crossed behind my back*). Pt Fairy

[edit]

Sorry if here's not the correct place to reply but it was the only section I could find ... re your reply to my previous post .. I added the site because I noticed 2 other links to sites on the pt fairy page, My PortFairy - Accommodation, Dining, Events and Activities + Port Fairy Community Pages which are both (as far as I am aware) sites that charge for advertising & have many sub-domains & external links to paying clients. No sites on our portal pay advertising (they are all local to Pt Fairy) , we have news, images, community input & local information which is topical & original. I did read the sections you mentioned & felt that we would certainly be included considering the other external links on the page.--Ptfairy (talk) 16:08, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the fixes. I will be coming back to the FAC for another round of comments, but first I want to make a clean-up pass myself. It's easier for me to fix any obvious mistakes myself than to clog up the FAC with typos and such. Only problem is that I am tired since I just worked on the massive Donald Bradman article, not to mention tracking the other sport-related candidates. I'll run through it tomorrow, and expect comments either then or the next day. Giants2008 (talk) 23:56, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Adelaide Red Blue Eagles

[edit]

Adelaide Red Blue Eagles (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) is a notable amateur football team playing in a legitimate competition. I dispute the claim that it is non-notable, pointing to an article in The Murray Valley Standard as proof of the clubs notoriety, which has a circulation of almost 4,000 (ABC audited). In regards to the SAASL being a purely social competition, the SAASL is the level of football (soccer) below the three professional leagues of South Australia which are run by the FFSA. Many players in the league are payed money to play, making it a business exchange. Social soccer is playing in the park with mates. Babny002 (talk) 10:48, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Considering your RfA, I found "All candidates should be self-nominations" slightly ironic. :-) I did like reading your thoughts though. giggy (:O) 08:35, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No reflection on you, of course. I guess my thoughts were similar to yours. I loathe seeing admin-noms as a trophy and I don't feel they add any more than a simple support would do. If we must have "trophies", they should be for article development and not the meta-processes around them. The only problem would be encouraging candidates to nominate. I doubt I would have thrust my name forward if I wasn't pushed. :-) -- Mattinbgn\talk 08:47, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure I could have convinced you! One answer I especially liked was yours to Q4, it's a damn shame more people don't share your attitude. giggy (:O) 09:31, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have tossed up taking WP:CANVASS to MfD but figure it would be tilting at windmills. It is unenforceable, promotes ignorance as a virtue, assumes admins and bureaucrats are morons with no judgement skills at all and worst of all, it is used as a blunt stick to stifle debate. In the last case, it is used mainly by editors, who—having never actually read the guideline— are attempting to have arguments defeated on the grounds of process rather than merit. Nine times out of ten, the supposed "canvassing" they are complaining about is allowed under the guideline anyway. -- Mattinbgn\talk 09:55, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're totally correct. Here's the latest example (zomg I just canvassed for it!). giggy (:O) 10:17, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Epping City FC

[edit]

Hi Mattinbgn

I made this page and I'm not sure why you have deleted it. You have said it is a non notable football club. Obviously you don't live in Epping as it is our team and we all know it. It may be 'non-notable' from your point of view but you cannot speak for the world. Also, what do you mean by No reliable independent sources provided.?

I don't see anything wrong with the article and I would appreciate it staying.

Thankyou

Trott the centurion

[edit]

Hi there Mattinbgn. I think that Trott was the 100th Australian FA, because I unearthed a whole pile of WW2 Pacific battles that Australia were listed as being involved - either by cat or in the Australian military history task force. With a full book on Miller at my disposal, I have once again overcooked things and have another 45k on Miller's Test career ready, although I forgot my USB today. Anyway, that should give extra info about Miller and Johnson if it might be of use in Johnson's article. Hmm, I'll have to start forking, because with the Military career and early years and VFL as well we could end up with 150+k. Not to mention the media career. Archie

[edit]

How unfortunate. I think there's close to zero chance of both appearing. Now, I might be biased, but I think Bradman is the more "important" of the two characters. The new system at Today's FA requests penalises where another similar article has appeared recently and penalises very heavily for such close proximity. Even if it overcame that hurdle, I have a strong hunch Raul would decline it anyway. Do you agree with my assertion about which is more important, in terms of kids being likely to be asked to do a project on the subject? --Dweller (talk) 10:04, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The irony is palpable! You could drop Sandy Georgia a line and ask her advice. There may be something that could be done. 100th anniversaries are rare and notable. There are also lots of slots in the month that have no real claims on them. Maybe pushing him to the end of his birth month would fit the bill, to keep max distance between the two cricket bios? Dunno. Ask SG for advice. --Dweller (talk) 11:31, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you ever get down into Victoria towards the "real food bowl" (cites avavilable upon request :)) of Australia, you're more than welcome to call in for a drink and stay-over... Your travels amaze me. Your pics impress me further... -- Longhair\talk 12:00, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If there are drinks on offer I will drive you Matt. :-D --VS talk 13:02, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Beer, yes. In the fridge... This is Wine country I hope you both realise... Thank god you've got a beer drinker on the other end here :) -- Longhair\talk 13:23, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have not been west of Swan Hill in 25 years although I would love to get back to Mildura. Indeed, I have never been to Robinvale/Euston in my life despite my (undeclared) interest in a fair maiden originally from that area! I am definitely keen to get back out that way. An ancestor of mine came to Australia on the (shipwrecked) ship that gave its name to Netherby, Victoria and after being rescued from King Island and taken to the Royal Exhibition Building, settled in the Numurkah district. -- Mattinbgn\talk 13:39, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Once you find a reason to land yourself into our fine city, you've got yourself some good company apparently :) I'll see you there... -- Longhair\talk 13:56, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Unlike Matt - I have been through your neck of the woods many times over the past couple of decades - it always has been well worth the trip. I'd be happy to drink your wine and be in your company (both of you) anytime. Cheers --VS talk 14:04, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Welcome anytime. I'm kidding goats lately; time is short online. Any extra hands are a bonus, although the fridge is a fair distance for the naystayers :) -- Longhair\talk 14:09, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Medal tally

There's only one table you need to worry about ...

Rank Nation Gold Silver Bronze Total
1  Australia (AUS) 11 10 12 33
2  New Zealand (NZL) 2 1 3 6

Moondyne 09:48, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

QLD up to 7 gold now (all 6 swimming golds were QLD all the relay golds were 4 QLD + Snowsill), and all the women's swimming relay teams were straight QLDers........Blnguyen (bananabucket) 02:16, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Getting clouted by England now :(, especially the cycling team - UK have won about 6/7 of the track events so far and Australia is now getting beaten by NZ in the teams pursuit :(. Maybe it might be good to lose so that they'll pump more funding because somehow I think the pollies have fallen asleep, or they think that just because the rest of the world is hopeless and is going backwards at cricket that Olympic medals are easy to come by, which they are not, judging by the amount to teams that are now going strong in swimming relays and the fact that everyone is now going full pelt in the heats and risking false starts on all the changeovers....Blnguyen (bananabucket) 02:07, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Mattinbgn. I was wondering if you could have a quick look over this to see if I have left out any context and wikilinks. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 08:50, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

South Sydney Rabbitohs

[edit]

Hi Matt - if you have the time and the inclination, would you be able to stop by South Sydney Rabbitohs? There appears to be some ongoing pov and spam pushing as well as possible bio violations there over the last few days but unfortunately the regular editors haven't placed any user-page templates. I dropped a couple of templates off this morning here and here. Cheers, Florrieleave a note 02:13, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Michael Witt

[edit]

Hi Matt - I would like some advice on handling the Michael Witt article. It's basically a fan-site and my attempts last year to improve the article were met with total resistance by the anon ip "owners" of the article. I haven't attempted to do any more since then but I've just deleted some unreferenced peacocky/fannish chunks which were recently added and I've added an {{nofootnotes}} template to the page. I'm not expecting my edits to be welcomed any more than they were last time. Can I treat the ip as a vandal at all if it is all reverted? Cheers, Florrieleave a note 05:03, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If, after some notice, the editor continues to revert without discussion I would certainly feel free to treat this as a vandalism case, up to and including reporting to WP:AN/I. Sorry I didn't respond more quickly, I haven't been around here much lately. The article is now on my watch list. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 09:36, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the advice, and for looking at the article. Cheers, Florrieleave a note 11:03, 17 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

VIC tags

[edit]

Hi, I have restored the Victorian country tags. I apologise for causing any trouble on this front.

Re usefulness: the VIC category itself wasn't so bad, but the Melbourne one is beyond useless. (Until this morning, every tram service was listed as needing a photo!) When I was in Melbourne myself with 8 days and a camera, I accessed it but in the haze of listed suburbs there, couldn't figure out what was priority and what was not (or even what was nearby) from the 360 or so entries and whether any of them had in fact been "requested" at all, and gave up - this will be the problem of *anyone* who tries to use that category with the same aim in mind. As a former database developer, too, I'm well aware of the concept of redundancy and the fact that this list will quickly become desynchronised with the number of articles actually needing photos - the more incoherent and complex, the less likely it is to be updated as the less likely anyone will use it. Is there any way the use of this category can be improved, or should it be replaced with a WikiProject to-do list which can be categorised? Orderinchaos 05:50, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

South Melbourne cricketers

[edit]

I love the new name. Your new category is pretty easy to fill with quality cricketers. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 01:23, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it is, and the name is more convenient. A lot of people have trouble spelling the old one for some reason. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 08:07, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Action needed

[edit]

The need for a RFC is becoming more and more obvious - please go ahead and do it - Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2008 September 14#Coastal_and_port_cities_and_towns - there is actually reason to believe that there are associated/related moves that require attention, and some semblance of protocol and order to what looks like a potential situation would be much appreciated. A sense of correct procedure I believe is crying out from this issue as it appears to be developing at the moment. SatuSuro 05:37, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would thoroughly endorse such a move. It appears some editors have gotten entirely carried away and need to be brought into line and reminded that they are meant to serve the community, not the other way around. Orderinchaos 05:50, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your level headed and project wide and relevant comment regardin the current issue at Orderinchaoses talk page is appreciated and it only reinforces my confidence in your level headedness and vision - thank you! SatuSuro 09:03, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why, thank you! :-) Hopefully we can get some changes in process out of the whole debacle. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 09:20, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

By what has happened so far I am unfortunately quite pessimistic - but hey your points and the way you have expressed them - if they bring a revised method of tackling the dump and run style at global cfd's - and developed into a more specific task oriented piece by piece method - then i think there is hope that - it will be a better place to work, but i hope we dont have too many body parts to pick up off the floor after it is all resolved, however long that might take :( SatuSuro 09:28, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Advice

[edit]

Thanks for the message, but I am well aware of the advice, which I chose not to heed. They weren't that difficult to find. You'll note that a camera is much more accessible than I scanner so I took photos of the book which makes the geometry a bit warped. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 02:04, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mulga Bill

Reply - not sure :)

[edit]

Unfortunately all I have is secondary data from the ABS and the former Department of Local Government in the 1980s, and library lookups in SLV and searches on the Net. There seems to be a genuine split! Even Google can't decide - one (&) is only weakly preferenced above the other (and). I had used the ABS data from yearbooks as my primary reference. Whichever one it is, the other should definitely redirect to it. Orderinchaos 01:33, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That wouldn't be OR at all - I often do that sort of stuff to pin down minor details. Orderinchaos 01:41, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Government Gazette No S2 (Thurs 19 January 1995) s.3(2)(n) says "On the appointed day the following councils cease to exist [...] Shire of Newham and Woodend". Section A on the first page repeats this particular spelling of it. If we go with that spelling, we now have an RS for it. Confirmed that the ABS census district was "&" from two sources. Orderinchaos 01:47, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Was lucky to find that one. :) I scanned in all the related VGG's relating to the amalgamations about 3 months ago, intending later to use them to improve some of the articles, but have as yet to get around to it. I had for some inexplicable reason dumped them in my camera directory instead of my usual PDFs directory. Orderinchaos 02:23, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Regions

[edit]

I think there must be some sort of legitimate institutionalised region names in states other than qld and wa - it seems odd that there is such disquiet in the vic and nsw area - surely there are specific fed and state legal distainctions for regions? SatuSuro 03:21, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I work in the LG field in NSW and I have never heard or seen of them (not to say that it doesn't exist, however). Various departments (Health, Education, Tourism, State Dev) have various versions, none of which are consistent with others and none of which have any legislative backing (other than perhaps health). The ABS definitions of regions may be as good as we are going to get, but that would rule out Riverina, surely a well recognised region but with no ABS recognition. It is not surprising that the two largest states have some sort of formal regionalisation that the smaller states possibly do not. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 03:49, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm- In WA we have twice the number than are actually at the article - no one has untangled the issue much and many of them are not enumerated - I would class what Telstra used to have for phone areas, (ocde areas). surely the Local Government association would have some way to differentiate councils, surely SES and emergency authorities would have was of desginating areas, there would be the areas as designated by the weather bureau, and the ag dept - I am sure there is hope for the states other than Qld and WA to have good regional chaos articles - it just needs very careful writing. And in the regions of a state regions article I presonally wouldnever allow - for one type of regional label to rule out another type, its against the general import of the reason for the article in the first place - which is to show the range of different ways the state(S) are divided up by various sources of info - SatuSuro 10:52, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As one of the team that got Riverina to FA status I am not against regional articles and categories, but even agreeing on a definition of Riverina caused some major heartache (and attracted a troll) before some good will saw us get over the line. I guess I am a little nervous of the work involved in getting some consensus about what makes up the [[[Wimmera]] as opposed to the Western District; what area the Goulburn Valley takes in (does it include Yarrawonga for example). Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/North Central Victoria gives some idea of my concerns when writing articles about regions. The idea of North Central Victoria still means nothing to me and I daresay it means little to most Victorians but here we are with an article about it. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 11:23, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How I understand it is that it's not really a fixed region,(Use the "Riverina" which I could go on about) SES HQ in Wagga Wagga uses the "Murrumbidgee"[3] as it's region rather then the Riverina then you have REROC (Riverina Eastern Regional Organisation of Councils)[4] then RIVROC (Riverina Regional Organisation of Councils)[5]. Also before the councils lost control of the electricity control Murrumbidgee County Council (Griffith, Leeton ect) and Southern Riverina County Council (Wagga Wagga), so it seems that the regions are not really legally binding. Bidgee (talk) 11:18, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Note REROC, RIVROC and MUROC are now RAMROC (Riverina and Murray Regional Organisation of Councils)
My main aim in working on the WA article was to show that different authorities and non authoritiies over time have divied the state up to the point we have to accept that there are differences- and not to get bothered in any way by the fact there might be up to 6 or 7 ways of understanding what is south west western australia - but simply to get it into an article. Then if someone has an issue with any of them it is always a case of using cites to point out that the variants exist :) SatuSuro 11:46, 29 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re my indiscriminate comments at Afd's - I think there are issues that work both ways as to the global nature of the process - I remain particularly jaded by regional ignorance bias in the process (specially against Indonesian articles) - but can also see the very important validity of it being global in a way of forcing rs or delete process. Re: Parramatta

[edit]

The edits I have made have mainly been wikifying in nature, i.e. I have made the article consistent with other articles of its type e.g. Sydney, Melbourne, etc. On closer examination it shall be seen that very little has in fact been changed, but it has only been rearranged in good faith such that all information is put in its proper place. I do not believe this to be a problem or disruptive. The article was a mess in the first place. VerseDoorPlace (talk) 13:35, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
