Happy New Year! (Ukrainian: З Новим Роком!, Russian: С Новым Годом!). I wish you in 2007 to be spared of the real life troubles so that you will continue to care about Wikipedia. We will all make it a better encyclopedia! I also wish things here run smoothly enough to have our involvement in Wikipedia space at minimum, so that we can spend more time at Main. --Irpen

Happy New Year[edit]

Real Life has taken me away from Wikipedia for a little while, but it feels good to look in and see the kind wishes posted here by wikifriends.

I'll take a few moments during this extended holiday time to think of you all, not as wiki collaborators, but as real folks with real lives who have been inspired by the idea of Wikipedia as I have. I hope you have all been able to reduce the wikistress level by doing something unencyclopedic (I made a big punchbowl of egg nog from scratch for New Year's Eve). Remember that no matter how bad it gets, some other editors will be around to fix all the problems, or screw it all up beyond recognition, long after we're gone. Even when all of your edits are only history, your contributions will have helped give shape to something that will be around for the duration of human history. Regards, Michael Z.

FL nomination[edit]

Hi, Michael! I have nominated administrative divisions of Adygea for FL here. There were some concerns regarding that list's layout, which I am not sure how to resolve best (I've been tweaking the layout for over a year now with subpar results). As you know about such things a lot more than I do, I am wondering if you could spare a few minutes of your time to take a look at the list and see if there is anything obvious that can be improved layout-wise (and if so, how). Thanks!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 20:45, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Non-displaying characters[edit]

I noticed that you changed the ae ligature into a different character for the example of Ossetian which appears on the Cyrillic alphabet page. The new characters do not display on my browser (MS Internet Explorer 6.0). Any ideas how I can make them show up?? Thanks. Or should I say, dyakuyu. Cbdorsett 12:24, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, sorry. MSIE has some Unicode font display problems: adding the Unicode template should work around that. Michael Z. 2007-01-15 15:38 Z

Hello, request here.[edit]

I'm a person who goes to the school that has this particular IP address. The thing is, we're an elementary school, and we don't really need to be able to edit. I ask, on behalf of your fine website, to ban us from editing Wikipedia permanently. Thanks, Anonymous —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 207.224.177.252 (talk) 21:30, 18 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Sorry, but I have no way of knowing how many schools or other institutions access Wikipedia through this IP address, or what their needs are. I don't know what the best solution is, but perhaps you can find out where to get more help at Wikipedia:Requests for administrator attentionMichael Z. 2007-01-18 21:42 Z
Ah, I see. That's what I had expected. I'm posting from my home computer now. I'm assuming that we're all using a shared IP (It's unlikely that the nearby school has access to ours, they aren't part of this school district.)

But, I'll attempt to appeal to the request selection. I will ask, likely, further authority, in example, the computer lab administrator. I know for a fact that another student has apoligized, I know the basic ropes of Wikipedia.

However, I will fight for Wikipedia, as vandalism is for asshats. RaphaelFaunus 07:09, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Agassiz Brewing logo.png)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Agassiz Brewing logo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Dear Michael, I have made a table in the German article on the Cyrillic alphabet, and I was very happy to use your images of Old Cyrillic letters. However, there's one mistake in them: The second letter form given in the image for ot does not belong to ot but is a variant of o (and is so similar that it might just as well be left out completely). I would be happy if you could delete this form from the image indicated above. Once again thanks for your great work in making up these images. --Daniel Bunčić (de wiki · talk · en contrib.) 11:13, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

History of the Soviet Union[edit]

I've made some announcements ([1][2][3][4][5][6]) and I'm sure there will be folks who have something to say, so I'm starting this topic here. Sorry that I haven't been around much to discover the situation earlier. I'm afraid I still don't have much time to devote to Wikipedia editing, so I won't be able to be a big help, but the state of History of the Soviet Union is just unacceptable, and I hope it won't be too much work to reassemble a good summary article with material from the detailed articles.

Hi Mzajac, You may remember me from the help you gave me with the translation of the Military of Ukraine page. I've moved on to do some Soviet formations, and have machine-translated some Russian webpages, but they haven't come out comepletely. Would you mind taking a look at the 45th Rifle Division and translating the odd word that hasn't come out, and, when you can, also look at Twenty-Second Army (Soviet Union) and Twenty-Ninth Army (Soviet Union)? Highlighted dates on Winnipeg page[edit]

Did you want to highlight Winnipeg's founding on the Winnipeg article? I noticed you put it back in right away. Okay, thanks. I'm always looking to improve the Winnipeg and Manitoba articles.

Yes, I saw Walker's article. He had contacted me at home about who Wikipedia and thought I was an administrator. I gave him some instruction for about an hour and said if he wanted an insiders account to speak to you or one of the other Winnipeg administrators. Don't know if he actually did get a hold of you. He really didn't know know much about how it worked at first but said Free Press editors often looked on Wiki as a reference as they did research on a subject. jdobbin 18:29, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Politics of Russia[edit]

Your changes in AFV list by country[edit]

If that is a list by origin many countries won't have any AFVs there at all! And if you're so determinated to do so (and ruin what I've been working on for mouths) then why you only removed the Archer from list of Polish vehicles? More or less than 70% of the vehicles there are not of Polish origin.

Please respond or leave my work alone. I think we should talk about this before you make any kind of dramatic changes to said article.

BTW this isn't meant to be offensive. It's just that the part of article your about to dramatically change (at least I suspect you of that) is one I spent most of my time editing Wikipedia on. Also I was sending polite "diplomatic" messages to other people and they usually didn't respond and I worked too hard on that article to just give it up that easily.

Airtrooper Rank[edit]

Hi, just a quick one on the Airtrooper rank, I was an Airtrooper in the British Army for 4 years, a members of the AAC for 15 years and retired this year from the British Army after 22 years. Happy Days :)

The abbreviation for Airtrooper is "Atpr" I explained this in the minor edit text. The fact that Airtrooper is actually one word, to have a capital "A" and "T" doesn't make sence. I hope this amemdment could be changed.

While I am on the subject, I appreciate the change to the link to my user account (the rules); but I wish to publish my work on the rank of Airtrooper as a main subject and not in my user area. How do I do this. That said it is still a work in progress :)

Thanks in advance for your time :)

[replied at user talk:Manblog —MZ]

No Problem, and thanks very much for your help. I am stuck a little: I have created a page Airtrooper and Airtrooper (Rank) I need Admin to look into it and decide what should happen; which one to delete? Ignore this it's been rectified! Again, many thanks Wayne

Thanks for looking over my work and making it more presentable (I am learning quickly); I am looking further into the history of the 'Air' part of Airtrooper. It is very much based on the Parachute Regiment, Glider Pilot Regiment and the SAS. It is all very interesting. :) More to come!

Template help?[edit]

Hi,

I totally stole a template from you (the Soviet armoured fighting vehicles one) and am trying to help out these guys, conversation here. Is there a way of getting this image at the top of this template? I passed my limits several hours ago, I'm improvising.

Thanks,

WLU 20:09, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
The template now has an image, I was wondering if you could have a gander at the coding to see if there's any way to clean it up; since I was translating the templates without a dictionary, I don't know what I'm doing and if it could be done more easily or cleanly. Thanks, WLU 20:31, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Winnipeg article[edit]

The reason I put the scrolling bar and small print reference list in was to standardize with what the Calgary page is doing. Is that not correct? I am seeing more article pages using the scrolling bar once the notes reach 30 or so in number.

The last time I heard, the Winnipeg article was overly long. I have moved some of the article to sub-pages but citations account for a lot of space. jdobbin 17:36, 12 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good work on cleaning up the Winnipeg article. It has needed a clean up for the last month. I ditched some of the pictures that are unrelated to the sections they are in and another contributer fixed up demographics section. jdobbin 23:53, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ukrainian name[edit]

Michael, I am very impressed by an amount of time you put in the post to talk:Kiev/Naming. I mostly ignore this whole "debate", now, thankfully, out of the way of productive users. Speaking of Ukrainian names, could you move this? This certainly won't ignite any controversy. The current redirect has a history and can't be moved without deletion. Thanks, --Irpen 01:51, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I actually managed to do it without spending too much time, and the seeing the search results satisfied my own curiosity.
I just felt I had to address the continued presentation of obvious mistruth. I don't know who it actually aims to convince, but the overwhelming volume could fool another editor who actually assumes good faith and doesn't take the time to examine so many false claims.
Moved the article. Cheers.

Hi Mzajac, just been reading through the T-34 article for the first time. Just wanted to congratulate you on how good it is - including funny things like pink tanks and vehicles that spent 56 years at the bottom of a bog! Congrats again, Buckshot06 10:13, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tank ID[edit]

Hey Mzajac, long time no talk. I was hoping you could ID a picture of a tank I took while I was away a few months ago. Judging by its looks, I am almost convinced that it's a T-72 although one of the military men over there I believe told me otherwise. Transliteration issue[edit]

Hello, I was told that you would know the answer to this question. The article Hryhory Loboda is spelled differently in the article itself (Hryhoriy), and in the Hetmans template. Because if this, his name appears as a red link in the template. I know Григорій can be transliterated in many different ways, and I am not sure which transliteration would be prefered. Could you fix it? Ostap 19:19, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the explanation and for fixing it. From now I will follow your example. Thanks, Ostap 19:31, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I believe I understand. So for the Alexander Dovzhenko article, would I be correct to add Oleksandr after the Ukrainian in the first line? Ostap 19:43, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

HP - Harry Potter[edit]

I want to emphasize that I was not threatening to fight or unnecessarily edit. I was stating that for the sake connivance (since there is an obvious demand for it) and for maintaining less revisions on Wikipedia, it should be added. Please to not harass/blame users. Thank you,140.146.202.180 07:29, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I can appreciate your honesty that you do not agree. I agree that leaving a paragraph in the disambiguation was neither a solution nor the best idea. However, I want to point out that there are two parties in this dispute: Those 'adding' and those 'removing'.

The pool of those removing is much small and is basically a set group of people that have members joining slowly. They are devoted to the cause that HP douse not mean nor imply Harry Potter. Some may argue that is because these 'removers' are not a fan/don't like/never read Harry Potter. This assumption is basically irrelevant although it may play a role in the motive of removing.

The pool of those who are adding are an entirely random group of people that contains an infinite number of members. Users join this group when they search for HP expecting to find a reference to link to their topic they are looking for, in this case Harry Potter. This may because the user truly refers to Harry Potter as HP, is lazy and thinks it will be in the obvious, or is clueless how to spell Harry Potter and expects it in the obvious. In any case people are expecting Harry Potter to be in this so-called obvious location. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to stop the 'adders', as it is an entirely random group of visitors that notice Harry Potter is not on this seemingly obvious page.

The 'adders' will not be aware of the so-called consensus that the 'adders' should not add Harry Potter. Since there are numerous adds for Harry Potter, and it keeps on repeating, I want to argue that we should add it as a general public consensus that HP could stand for Harry Potter, despite the fact that it is "incited". It is an assumed abbreviation. It will be easier to control/notify the experienced Wikipedia editors that it is alright that Harry Potter is there, than notify the average person not to add Harry Potter.

I believe I understand you logic for not having Harry Potter on disambiguation, I hope you understand my logic of why I believe it should be there. If I myself had not run into this page expecting Harry Potter to be on this page, I would definitely be on the other side of the table. I hope the next question is whether the Harry Potter link will go the book series, or to the character.
Thank you for your time,140.146.202.180 07:35, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Spaceeba[edit]

Spaceeba Tavareesh. Now could you be so kind to do the same for this tank. See, when I went there, the military guys I was with disputed with the fact that the tank I previously showed you was not the same as this one. And mind you, these guys weren't newbs or anything: one of them happened to be a video photographer who had accompanied men in nearly every firefight and no doubt had served in the Soviet Army. I can believe if they meant that the T-72 was a different type but this tank here is undoubtedly a T-72 also isn't it? Much thanks, --Marshal Bagramyan 06:37, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

GOST and scientific transliteration[edit]

Sorry about the GOST 16876-71 mix-up. I had been looking at a revised list and assumed there had been a typo in the article. This probably should also be fixed in the Romanization of Russian article. I'll refrain from doing so as there might be some reason I am unaware of for having it differently, although certainly can lead to confusion as it stands.

As for the prime vs. modifer letter prime, it's a sticky situation. Unicode recommends U+02B9 for linguistic usage, and for Cyrillic transliteration in particular, and the specifications for spacing and line-breaking certainly favor the use U+02B9 over U+2032 in that regard. Certainly U+2032 is more supported by fonts (U+2032 vs. U+02B9), but should we sacrifice accuracy for accommodation? I'm not a Windows user either (GNU/Linux here), and don't have ready access to a Windows machine, but I'll check the character support the next time I have a chance. I'd personally prefer to use the more precise U+02B9, but I can understand wanting to accommodate a possible majority of users.

On a side note, the publication for the BGN/PCGN system uses U+2032.

In any case, there should be some consistency among the various transliteration articles. Currently there seems to be a mix of U+2032, U+02B9, and even U+0027 (apostrophe).

Thanks for looking after this stuff! —chet the gray 22:55, 27 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

transliteration question[edit]

Hello, I have another transliteration question. This time it is about Symon Petlyura. I see that a few years ago you debated changing the title, and decided not to, but why exactly did you decide to use Petliura not Petlyura? Ostap 22:57, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I really have no reason for my opinion, for some reason I just prefer Petlyura. I have seen it written multiple ways here on wikipedia alone. But I guess if his own family uses Petlura, then thats a pretty strong case. Thanks, Ostap 01:33, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

2004 рік[edit]

All authorities are switching to using official spellings, like "Kyiv": anglophone diplomatic missions, atlases and dictionaries. By its nature, Wikipedia should be ahead of the curve, instead of bringing up the rear. This situation is just sad.

Тоді, не було можливо.

Horlo 01:34, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds familiar. I've learned a lot about Wikipedia since then, and I agree with the reasons for the naming conventions. In fact, by its nature, Wikipedia should not be ahead of the curve. From Wikipedia:Five Pillars:
All articles must follow the verifiability, and no original research policies. Cite references from a reliable source, especially on controversial topics. Wikipedia is not the place for personal opinions, experiences, or arguments. Nor is it a soapbox, an experiment in anarchy or democracy, a vanity publisher, a web directory, or an indiscriminate collection of information.
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. If we try to stick our personal agendas into it, then sooner or later they will be removed by editors wiser than us. Regards. Michael Z. 2007-10-09 01:44 Z

Hello, two quick points: First, I agree with Wikipedia conventions also. Wikipedia should not be ahead of the curve. It should be on the curve. Second, even though you are wiser than I in some things, and I am wiser than you in others, I don't think there is anybody wiser than us.
See you in Kyiv, without an agenda. Будьмо, Horlo 02:34, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mzajac. Petliura request[edit]

Hello Mzajac. You have discussed before about Petliura, so now I have another request. This article has been developed alot recently, and it seems that "Petliura" no longer even appears in the text. I ask that the article be moved to "Petlura" because evidently this is more correct and common, and right now the article looks like it is full of typos.

As a side request, since you are an authority and have been following the Kyiv/Kiev debate, could you enforce WP:NPA and WP:CIVIL? Thanks, Ostap 23:51, 23 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
