New Page Review newsletter December 2019

A graph showing the number of articles in the page curation feed from 12/21/18 - 12/20/19

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

Administrators' newsletter – January 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2019).

Guideline and policy news

Arbitration

  • The fourth case on Palestine-Israel articles was closed. The case consolidated all previous remedies under one heading, which should make them easier to understand, apply, and enforce. In particular, the distinction between "primary articles" and "related content" has been clarified, with the former being the entire set of articles whose topic relates to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly interpreted rather than reasonably construed.
  • Following the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Bradv, Casliber, David Fuchs, DGG, KrakatoaKatie, Maxim, Newyorkbrad, SoWhy, Worm That Turned, Xeno.

Draft page of World of Tanks

Hi IVORK.

Earlier, I wrote to you that I would like to update the World of Tanks page. I prepared a draft. It contains a huge number of edits compared to the current page. Could you take a look at it and give your verdict regarding its publication?

Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020

Hello Renamed user cdb78c3737e6b7f6ba7e28cedcc6608711202eee,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

Administrators' newsletter – March 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

"ForeverAlone" listed at Redirects for discussion

A discussion is taking place to address the redirect ForeverAlone. The discussion will occur at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2020 May 3#ForeverAlone until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. 1234qwer1234qwer4 (talk) 08:21, 3 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi there, I'm HasteurBot. I just wanted to let you know that Draft:Japan International Training Cooperation Organization, a page you created, has not been edited in 5 months. The Articles for Creation space is not an indefinite storage location for content that is not appropriate for articlespace.

If your submission is not edited soon, it could be nominated for deletion. If you would like to attempt to save it, you will need to improve it.

You may request Userfication of the content if it meets requirements.

If the deletion has already occured, instructions on how you may be able to retrieve it are available at WP:REFUND/G13.

Thank you for your attention. HasteurBot (talk) 01:26, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

  • A motion was passed to enact a 500/30 restriction on articles related to the history of Jews and antisemitism in Poland during World War II (1933–45), including the Holocaust in Poland. Article talk pages where disruption occurs may also be managed with the stated restriction.

Your draft article, User:CapnPhantasm/sandbox

Hello, IVORK. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "sandbox".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Hello Renamed user cdb78c3737e6b7f6ba7e28cedcc6608711202eee,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

DAVO

Did you really come from semi-retirement just to take down a page? If you can't use Billboard, Youtube, or any other press source to back up an artist (as they do on THOUSANDS of other wikipedia pages) then what can you use? How can you properly cite that an artist is a son of Junior Marvin from The Wailers? with his birth record?

Hi there Christinagirgis. The main issue with that article is that it does not satisfy the requirements of WP:NMUSICIAN as I and many other reviewers have pointed out — IVORK Talk 07:13, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for the comments on my article!

IVORK: Hello! Thanks for your feedback on the composer "Hugo Rosales Cruz" page I submitted for publication. Your comments were very helpful, particularly the references to the "Wikipedia:Notability (music)" WP:MUSIC in particular the section: "Criteria for composers and lyricists" WP:COMPOSER. I'll incorporate some of these elemnts in the entry and will attempt the publication shortly. Regards from Mexico, --Garmanhmc (talk) 03:27, 5 August 2020 (UTC)

WikiAuthBot in Bulgarian

Hi! Thank you very much for developing and maintaining this bot! Hope you don't mind me asking a few questions... :)

  • How can I help with adding a Bulgarian translation? (done that for WikiBot, but it seems you're not using translatewiki)
  • Is there anything else that needs to be set up beyond the OAuth2 authorization for the bot and the configuration?
  • What's the scope of the blocks that setblock takes into account? I'd expect these to be the blocks on the Wikipedia defined by setlang, but does that include the temporary blocks (as opposed to indef), and, perhaps more importantly, the new partial blocks (per pages or namespaces)? Also, more out of curiosity (but still helpful, I guess), are the global account locks included, too?

Cheers,

Gravedancing

However, said user is apparently a regular and is probably going to use his influence to smash me on Wikipedia and possibly get me blocked. I have already posted it on WP:3O, but it got removed after it was deemed to involve more than two editors. What steps should I take? Thank you for your help. Firestar464 (talk) 03:40, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

@Firestar464: I feel it is unlikely that a single user would have enough influence to warrant a block being that all edits are permanently logged. One only needs to look into WP:RfA to see the depth some investigations go. As I am not aware of the direct actions I find it hard to further advise past simply warning for disruptive editing where blatant or ignoring the user where possible — IVORK Talk 03:52, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

Once again, thanks for moving this across and your hatnote work. I noticed a slight problem with the former PR, which I had conducted under the article's full name: Ada Winifred Weekes Baker. A link to it did not transfer over to the new talkpage correctly. I'm not savvy enough to do so. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Questionable AfC decline

Hi IVORK – do you intend to respond to the ping at the Teahouse regarding your AfC decline here? well understand general bias to certain kinds of entries, a bit like: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Medical_Women%27s_Association https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_Women%27s_International_Association but these sorts of entries tends to be ... stubby(?)

Also, 'Previous decline issues ['seem to'?] still exist' but not for lack of genuine edits :(

- text raising copyright concerns has been addressed - The org's note/relevance has been referenced more solidly/reliably (please see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_Women%27s_International_Association, and aforementioned encyclopaedia entries)

Hi there Textor Alector, the decline issues were mainly about it just being a list of all events, try to summarizes it into a form that only mentions notable events/pers/locations as opposed to just listing all. It needs to be in a more encyclopedic format than how it currently exists. About the Xbox Two redirect

I feel like The Xbox Two should redirect to the Xbox 360 due to it being the Second Installment in the Xbox Series not counting the new additions to the Xbox like Xbox 360S, Xbox One X and S, and Xbox 360 Core. So I should say you should re-redirect Xbox Two to 360, Xbox Three to Xbox One, and Xbox Four/Xbox Five to the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X. Do you disagree? --StaleGuy22 (talk) 20:56, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

@StaleGuy22: I feel that is a valid point, but also feel there'd be others wishing to weigh-in their opinions as both arguments hold merit. I merely created it as an at the time uncontroversial redirect request out of WP:AfC/R, but that doesn't mean it needs to stay that way — IVORK Talk 23:50, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
@IVORK: Much Appreciated, But I think that redirect still wouldn't make sense due to many YouTube videos and Google searches calling the Xbox Series X the Xbox Two, so the Xbox Series S would be the Xbox 1.5, I don't know which choice is better Vice Versa --StaleGuy22 (talk) 00:07, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

Reagen Revord

I think you may have misjudged the article request for Reagan Revord, you decided she is not notable. Meanwhile, at the encyclopedia made by qualified editors (which seems to have been the source for much of the proposed article) there is a page. Its also seems to contain lots of references, in reliable sources, discussing the subject at length. Since these sources are also listed on the draft article, I do not think your decision is correct, and the reasons stated on the draft page appear invalid. Could you please review this? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Raegan_Revord Bertcocaine (talk) 01:45, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

Hi there Bertcocaine, I have re-read over the content of the article and am still satisfied with the decision I made 6 months ago. While I do think it highly likely that she will qualify as she furthers her career as an actor and gains significant awards/more notable and covered roles, policies such as WP:NACTOR/WP:TOOSOON/WP:CRYSTALBALL have relevance here as to why I'm still not convinced enough to publish the article. — IVORK Talk 23:46, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

This article was created to improve the list of LGBT personalities in Nigeria. Reliable sources were cited.Bukky658 (talk) 3:07 (UTC) 6 September 2021.

@Bukky658: Hi there, while the sources are credible, this singular event is not enough to establish notability for a person to have their own article per WP:ONEEVENT and WP:NBIOIVORK Talk 02:23, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

A cup of tea for you!

Thanks for your help at WP:AFCRC! This discussion my interest you. Qwerfjkltalk 17:28, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
Hi, please notify the user after declining their redirect request and asking for a source (see here). Thanks! ― Qwerfjkltalk 06:20, 14 September 2021 (UTC)
@Qwerfjkl: I don't see the need to further expand reasoning on the basis of editors perhaps missing/not realising there is a show button, even if the original thought came from a sysop. I'm doing the same process as I have for years, if it's that big of an issue, the AFC/R script would have been edited. — IVORK Talk 06:27, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

@Qwerfjkl: No worries, but I'll continue to use the script & let that notify if the changes to it are made — IVORK Talk 01:09, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

Hello, IVORK,

Thank you for moving this page back to Draft space. It's already been deleted several times and needs an AFC review and approval before going into main space. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 05:18, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

Adding Aim Assist under Controversy

Hey IVORK, may I ask why you reverted my comments on Dr Disrespect page about aim assist controversy? I think it has enough source depth and cultural relevance to be included. It is also a large portion of the Doc's persona and feels wrong to overlook. I have opened it up for discussion on the talk page and wanted to get your take on it. Regional Jazz scenes

A while ago, I sent a request to move Cape jazz, Marabi, and Latin jazz (along with Afro-Cuban jazz) to the Regional scenes section of the Jazz template, but so far, that hasn't been done. Could you do it? 47.36.25.163 (talk) 20:47, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
