Bridge of Remembrance
[edit]Thanks for handling the Citizens' War Memorial nom. I completely spaced out on working on the bio article; you did a great job on it! I've started on Bridge of Remembrance, Christchurch which you might like to work on, too. --Rosiestep (talk) 00:54, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
- Oh, I thought you were on holiday (saw a holiday tag in an edit summary), hence I didn't reply – sorry. No trouble – I had great fun writing that bio. I've had some indirect dealings with the company 'Trethewey' before and now I know where the name comes from. I'll have a look at the Bridge of Remembrance article. Schwede66 01:34, 29 May 2011 (UTC)
I've had an internet connection so was able to do some editing. I just nom'ed Bridge of Remembrance, Christchurch. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:38, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
I've watchlisted it. Do you want to work on another? --Rosiestep (talk) 02:11, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. Looks like I'll have time over the next few days. Do you want to choose? A possible one is Dux de Lux, a Category II building that everybody in Christchurch knows, heaps of tourists go there, and the landlord and the long tenant are in high profile public disputes. Today, it was on the front page of The Press once again.
- I had a chat with the editor of The Press the other evening and he told me that they (or somebody else?) are working on a book about Christchurch heritage buildings, to be published at Christmas. Schwede66 02:17, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
I did some research on Dux de Lux and I haven't been able to find any info on the building itself. So far, at least, I have only found 2011 news articles about a business, a pub. Do you have access to additional resources regarding the Cat II bldg? --Rosiestep (talk) 06:34, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
- I've started the article. For Christchurch heritage items, you'll always find a link to the NZHPT entry with the commons category entry. I can write a bit more tonight before I hit the hay. Schwede66 11:00, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
After expanding Dux de Lux, I nom'ed it. I'll review an article later; have to run for now. I figured you may want to suggest an ALT as my hook mentions Llanmaes, rather than Dux de Lux. But if the building's older name is fine by you, then we're good. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:53, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

[edit]Hello Schwede66, thank you for catching a problem in my DYK nomination. The editors commented on the another alternative hooks. It could be moved back to preparation area now with alt4 for example. Thank you.--Mbz1 (talk) 15:24, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

Bird reviews
[edit]I see you upgraded Black Bishop. I currently have 4 bird articles I took from stub to at least start sitting at T:TDYK. The other three are: Yellow-crowned Bishop, White-winged Widowbird, and White-headed Buffalo-weaver? IMHO they are even better than black bishop and should be C or better if Black Bishop is. Thanks. BarkingMoon (talk) 11:06, 4 June 2011 (UTC)
- The reason I touched Black Bishop was that it sat in the prep area and showed as being stub class. Once an article is DYK approved, it is by definition no longer a stub. Hence, I went in there and removed the stub tag on the article page, and reassessed the article on its talk page. When you submit articles to DYK that will 'make it', you should remove any stub tags yourself. You can reassess the article yourself (personally, I never assess my own articles as better than C, even if they are), but if you are not comfortable doing this, you should at least remove any stub assessments and leave it unassessed. I hope this helps. Schwede66 11:26, 4 June 2011 (UTC)
- Where is there a list of class standards? Is there one for bird articles? I'll ask at WT:BIRD too. BarkingMoon (talk) 11:41, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

I see that Crisco 1492 has passed the DYK, however, I am willing to do further work on the refs if you think it needs it. Anna is behind the GFC and I try to help her out when I can. Recently, she tried to format the cites using the cite tool, but as it was a new URL, it was detected and blocked. If I can be of further assistance on this article, please contact me and tell me what needs to be done. Thanks for your patience. Viriditas (talk) 03:58, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Clarendon Tower
[edit]Sure, I will tend to Clarendon Tower and get it nom'ed. I was at the airport last night when I saw the news about the 13 June quake; I couldn't believe it. Everyone who was watching the TV monitor was asking if this was "new" news or a re-hash of the earlier quakes as it was hard to believe Christchurch could be hit again. And I thought California was the quake capital. Hope you have a fabulous vacation; China wow!
- Yeah, it's pretty bad. My guess would be that the biggest damage caused by the latest eq is of psychological nature. This better stop soon! Thanks for looking after the article. Goodbye China; Germany here we come. Schwede66 22:23, 14 June 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for looking after the Clarendon Tower nomination. I've added to the article and it looks pretty sharp now. There was an article in The Press the other day on the Peterborough Centre, and I thought I'd better do something useful with it before I can't remember. I've started this in my user space; please feel free to contribute. Schwede66 07:22, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

hi
[edit]No, it's a sort of present for a friend from New Zealand who's interested in politics and transparency in government. I started with the Cabinet. Other countries use a template, and I might try doing that. Maybe you could ask each political party for photo releases? They would be more likely to help than parliament, I think. NZparliament (talk) 00:52, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply. We've asked them and there's surprisingly little interest. Can you please point me at an example of the template you have in mind? Schwede66 01:11, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
- I'm now Kiwigov. Except my last two changes used my old name. Template:MPLinksNZ, example at Peter Dunne. Maybe you should tell them that if you can't use their official and familiar pictures, you'll be forced to use poorly-focused amateur photos taken when the MP is looking his/her worst. :-) And do you know of any other NZ websites about MPs that I should add? Kiwigov (talk) 01:23, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
- I suggest you asked this question at WP:NZPT, where others could contribute. Schwede66 02:24, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
- Thank you for your kind welcome, but after my experience with Moriori I am now reconsidering whether there's any point to my spending, or rather wasting, any more time at Wikipedia attempting to contribute to government transparency. There are infinite numbers of other places where I can find arrogant people who delight in smashing rather than building. Finding he's on the Admin list certainly didn't improve my view of this project. Kiwigov (talk) 01:20, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
- This might help. Moriori (talk) 02:43, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
- Oddly enough, Moriori's further lies and arrogance did NOT help. I quit. I'm sure I can find something else to do for my friend, someplace where the word "collaboration" is properly understood. Kiwigov (talk) 06:52, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

Notability
[edit]Please see WP:CORP to find out why I placed the notability tag on those articles. I'm sure that all of those companies are very notable, but Wikipedia's standards of notability are a bit different than mine or yours. Those articles lack what Wikipedia refers to as "reliable secondary sources," which are the standard by which Wikipedia policy defines notability for companies. Wellington by-elections
[edit]Thanks for pointing out (and fixing) the error on the List of New Zealand by-elections. Looks like we have a lot of conflicts on John Duthie's terms in office, chiefly I cannot find reference to the end of his 1893 to 1896 term. To (try to) make sense of it all I have written up the 1898 & 1899 articles. ... it's a start anyway. Fan | talk 06:57, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
- Good work. I've tried to make sense of it, too, and have written a bio for John Duthie. It needs an infobox, photo and a better lead, but the electoral history is now all there. Schwede66 23:36, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
Linwood
[edit]Thankyou for your contributions to the Linwood page. As someone who grew up in Linwood I hope that the page can be expanded. If you get chance, could you check the accuracy of my contributions.
Do you know anything of the history of the old Linwood library on the corner of Stanmore Road and Hereford Street? It's in rather a sad way from the earthquakes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Red660 (talk • contribs) 12:47, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
- Hello Red660, thanks for your message. I've had a look at your contributions history and you appear to be a thorough editor, always keen to ensure that contributions are verifiable and with excellent edit summaries. Top marks! Yes, the Linwood article did look a bit sad, and as I'm just about to embark on writing an article about Linwood House, I put some of the background into the Linwood article itself.
- I don't know much about the old Linwood Library (it's on the corner of Worcester Street, though), but what I do know that the building is registered with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. Their online entry for the building is rather scant, but what you can do is to ask them for a copy of the registration report, and that'll have a lot of info in it. They have an office in Christchurch. As far as the library part of it is concerned, that's documented in great detail on the Christchurch Libraries website. The building would meet notability requirements of Wikipedia, so you could write an article about it. If that's what you want to do, let me know and we'll do it as a team. Schwede66 20:37, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Script 'cleverness'
[edit]I regret the script isn't very clever. The script is written on the assumption that titles are immutable. It doesn't know that that date, situated within a '|title=' field can be changed because it's not in reality part of the title. The implication of it being located within that field is that it is immutable. I see you've corrected it. May I suggest relocating such date to within a '|date=' field for other instances where this is likely to occur? Regards, --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 03:45, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
- Oops, I owe you an apology on two accounts. Firstly, one shouldn't make such flippant comments (not even in edit summaries). And secondly, the date is indeed part of an article title, so I shouldn't have changed it – I obviously didn't look very hard. I've undone my edit. Schwede66 04:34, 8 September 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for the contributions on this page.
I wondered if, with your local knowledge, you can add any support to the statement "The wooden building survived three major earthquakes in 2010/11 almost unscathed and is the only church that remained in use in the central city." I based it solely on the church's website "Since 4 September 2010 our historic Victorian Gothic wooden church has survived three major earthquakes (and thousands of aftershocks) almost unscathed and is the only habitable church in use in the central city." Ned de Rotelande 08:54, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
- Newspaper reports only seem to support "only Anglican church" (that qualifier "Anglican" may be implicit in the church's website). I've suggested an alternative DYK hook, which may also clarify the importance of timber. – 202.124.73.243 (talk) 10:06, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
- I'm afraid that it will be true. I can't think of any other church (that still is a church) within the 4 Aves other than St Michael that's still going. Knox, the Basilica, St Lukes and the Durham Street Methodist Church are all outside of the red zone, and they have in common that they are munted. Inside the red zone are the ChristChurch Cathedral (stuffed), Oxford Terrace Baptist Church (demolished), St Paul's (demolished), St John (looking pretty munted). Then there's the Rose Historic Chapel (red stickered), which I'm not sure that they were still using as a church, and the Nurses Memorial Chapel (yellow stickered). The Trinity Church has been a restaurant and music venue for many years now, but is also history. The only building that looks fine (at least from the outside) is St Saviour's, but I'm guessing that it belongs to Cathedral Grammar School (it got relocated from Lyttelton many years ago). Can't think of anything else. As you see, it's not looking that pretty. If you are looking for another article to write, Trinity Church would be interesting for its recent history as a music performance venue. It was a real delight to go there. Bed time now; will deal with the previous reply (just had an edit conflict) tomorrow. Schwede66 10:17, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
- It may very well be true, sad though it is, but you can't say "only church" in a DYK hook without a solid reference, and even this doesn't fully answer the question. – 202.124.75.75 (talk) 13:31, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
- Sorry about the edit conflict. As far as I can tell, several Pentecostal churches within the 4 avenues continued operating. These were not using what you might call "traditional church buildings," but they are still "churches" in the sense that the word is usually used. – 202.124.75.75 (talk) 13:54, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
Regarding your comment there: please be aware that the presence of links that need disambiguation is not part of the DYK criteria at all and there's no basis for failing or delaying a DYK nomination because of such links. That issue is more relevant at FAC and perhaps GAN. rʨanaɢ (talk) 10:19, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
DYK help
[edit]Hi S – remember you said I could ask your help about DYK nomination? I've just added a nomination for Tom Skinner, which I've just expanded from 1.7k to 6.6k... can you check to make sure I haven't done anything stupid? Cheers! Grutness...wha? 12:00, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Grutness, yes, happy to help. There are several issues:
- Somebody has already been in there and removed an alleged copyvio. I haven't checked, but you obviously need to write text in your own words and can't use text from a source that is not in the public domain (DNZB bios are copyrighted).
- You need inline references for each paragraph.
- Feel free to run things by me before you nominate them. I'll convert those references that are there to inline for what it's worth. Schwede66 18:38, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
- Dammit, I'm pissed off with that – I deliberately rewrote everything I took from that site so as to be sure that it wasn't a copyvio. It most certainly wasn't "word for word". Grutness...wha? 01:12, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
- Oh dear. I haven't had time to even look into this myself. Hopefully I will find some time tomorrow to invest into this. Whatever is happening, I'm rather sad that you are having a dreadful time. Schwede66 09:47, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Historic Masters DYK - thank you
[edit]I'd like to thank you very much for your thoughtful work in reviewing and monitoring my DYK nomination for the Historic Masters record label. As you gathered, this was my first DYK nomination experience and I found the review process, as guided by you, pleasantly instructive. I was intrigued to see my preference for an appropriate hook gradually change over the course of a few days. I feel the eventual hook — Did you know that Historic Masters is a vinyl record label which continues to issue rare 78 rpm opera discs on a regular basis? — was a valid choice as it spotlighted an unusual form of cultural productivity that many may not be aware exists (I note the article attracted just over two thousand hits during the DYK time slot, which I suppose isn't too bad for a niche interest). Thank you again for your discreet mentoring.--MistyMorn (talk) 12:24, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Earthquake magnitudes
[edit]I'm new to editing wikipedia so apologise for the "minor edits" mistake. But I do think the magnitude of the ChCh quakes should be changed to USGS measurements for the following reasons: ) Apples to Apples. When we hear of a quake elsewhere in the world – the devastating 7.0 quake in Haiti for instance – it is almost without exception USGS measurements that are quoted by the media or on wikipedia or in any other source. 2) The Gold Standard. The USGS measurements are considered the gold standard for earthquake measurements by scientists around the world. 3) Distance Helps. The New Zealand measurements must be better because they were taken closer to the earthquake, right? Sounds good. But actually, the closer the measurements are taken to the center of an earthquake, the more prone the measurements are to distortions caused by the event itself. Usually this results in an exaggerated measure taken closer to the event, although occassionally the opposite can be true. That's why the USGS uses a combination of measures. Best Nickgbperry (talk) 03:16, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
- That's all very good, but there's no point starting a parallel discussion here. It belongs on the talk page of the relevant article and you should leave me a note here that points to that discussion. Schwede66 17:31, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Julie Anne Genter DYK hook
[edit]Hey, did you realize that you made the 5,000+ hit list on DYK? Congratulations! I added up all the hits you got for all the new pages in the hook and entered them on the DYK Statistics page. See DYK page view leaders by month (over 5,000 views) for December 2011. Best, Yoninah (talk) 00:32, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks for that. I do check for page views eventually, but haven't done that in a while, so wasn't aware of it. Schwede66 02:41, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a search with the contents of Waimea Plains, Tasman, and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: Waimea Plains. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.
It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. CorenSearchBot (talk) 18:56, 29 December 2011 (UTC)
