Colorado poetry fellowship[edit]

Hi! I've noticed that you copy-pasted the article Colorado poetry fellowship from this page. You wrote that "This link is open access public domain and has no copyright restrictions". Do you have any evidence that the page is in public domain? Without evidence that the content is free, it might be regarded as a copyright violation and speedily deleted. Hi - the link is to my librarys finding aid description of the Colorado Poetry Fellowship Collection. Like 99.9% of all library web site material it is totally public domain. I actually wrote the description in the link which I copy-pasted for the Wikipedia article. Does that help?

I arrived here from the discussion about the Jack Foster (journalist) article. It seems that there have been a number of copyright related objections to articles that you have created. We appreciate the contributions, but this is a difficult area and the first instinct of any reviewing editor when a copyright question comes up is to be conservative and treat it like a possible violation. Generally, to be treated unquestionably as public domain, it has to be old, US Federal government material, or have an explicit free-use license on the page itself. For example, the library has this page about the poetry fellowship, where it says "Some material may be copyrighted or restricted. It is the patron's obligation to determine and satisfy copyright or other case restrictions when publishing or otherwise distributing materials found in the collections."

You can find some more information about our copyright policies at this page: Wikipedia:Copyright_violations#Policies.2C_guidelines_and_information_pages. If you haven't looked through the first few items in that list, they might be helpful. Also you could look at the Wikipedia:Plagiarism page and also the associated talk page: Wikipedia talk:Plagiarism. I think the confusion is coming about over the difference between a library pages which DESCRIBES a collection and the COLLECTION ITSELF. Material IN the collection may be under copyright but not the library GUIDE to the collection. I cannot begin to tell you how frustrating it has been! One problem is that Wikipedia does not have a phone # so you discuss this with a live human. Steven, this is a massive worldwide volunteer project. Though our parent Wikimedia Foundation has an office and staffers, they are very rarely involved with encyclopedia content. Wikipedia itself has no paid staffers, and no bosses to assign anyone to do anything. Each volunteer editor decides what he or she wants to work on, and you are just as much a volunteer editor here as anyone else. We build this encyclopedia right here on Wikipedia, transparently, where any editor can see almost anything. Phone calls are very rare here. In my opinion, you ought to spend some time studying our policies and guidelines before writing any more articles. Feel free to ask questions on my talk page any time. I already filled out some form declaring I was the holder of copyright on the original entry material because I wrote it and that the web page had no copyright issues. First of all, I strongly advice you to log in when editing. Editing while logged out reveals your IP address which can make you problems. Can, you, please explain where did you have discussion with "a dozen different people" and where did you "repeat your explanations over and over"? I can't find any such discussion in your contributions. You say that you already explained your reasons to a user named "Mike Van Hall". There is no user with that (exact) name. Can you point us to the exact page where you explained it? Maybe you made those edits while logged out, so they are not saved in your contributions. I know that this might be frustrating, but Wikipedia takes copyrights very seriously, and user Margin1522 and I are trying to help you as much as we can. But, you have to help us. Thanks in advance! I think Mike V would be in a better position to provide the help you need. Yes, sorry I didn't notice that Mike V has already lifted the block. So let me explain what to do now. I'm assuming that you have sent to Mike a list of the articles where you want to use the public-domain content. If not, please do that, as explained on Wikipedia:Donating_copyrighted_materials#Granting_us_permission_to_copy_material_already_online. Then place the template {{OTRS pending}} on the associated Talk page of each the articles. (The Talk page, not the article page.) Later when the permission is confirmed a member of the OTRS team will come and replace that template with another one to indicate that permission is confirmed. Yes, it's not simple. And unfortunately our help pages are not known for their simplicity either. Earlier I said send a list, but perhaps it would be easier to take it file by file. It's essentially three steps. (I'm going by the book here, I've never done this.)

Write the article.
Send the email to Mike. Use the form at Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries.
Put the {{OTRS pending}} template on the Talk page of the article.

Aha, you're right. I think see the problem. You must be accessing from a mobile device. The mobile view shows only about half of the content on his user page. It is possible that some of these people whose bios you are posting are notable. But simply copy&pasting from another source is just slovenly. In most cases you are making absolutely no attempt to create Wikipedia article. So slow down! Create one proper article at a time. Preferably mostly in your own words. I second what RHaworth says. Wikipedia is quite selective about subjects for articles: the inclusion criterion is called Wikipedia:Notability, and is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." See also WP:Notability (people) and WP:Golden rule. A single link to a biography on a university website is not enough.

Also, there is more to making an encyclopedia article than simply dumping a block of copied text. For general advice on how to make acceptable articles, read WP:Your first article and WP:Writing better articles. There is also advice at WP:WikiProject Biography#Tips for writing biographies. While other volunteers may be interested in developing these articles, there is no reason why they should have to: if you want to contribute on a large scale like this, the onus is on you to take the time to learn Wikipedia's standards so that your contributions do not need extensive reworking. Steve, you should use your sandbox and/or the draft namespace to create draft articles. After you crate a draft, you may ask other editors to review it, or you may submit it to the WP:Articles for creation process. That way you will not be blocked. It did not fix by itself, it was fixed by other editors. If you create an article with wrong capitalization, you can fix it yourself by using the "move" function. Just click "move" button at the top of the page, and move the page to new title. And, once again, please log in, and please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) at the end. One Wikipedia question - why don't they just assign an editor to each contributor? Wikipedia is a community of many thousand members, all of whom are volunteers. There is no hierarchy, we are all equal. As I know, we have a program called "Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user" where new user may seek for an experienced user to adopt them, ie. to be their mentor. One of the running issues is your editing while logged out. Before making any edit, including talk page edits, click "log in" at the top of the page, and log in with your "Steven Paul Fisher" account. This is very important. Without logging in, your contributions are not saved to your contribution list, which makes it hard for other editors to help you. And, also, at the end of every talk page post, you should sign it by writing four tildes (like this: ~~~~). When you click "save" those for tildes get automatically converted into your signature. You don't need to type "Steve F." at the end of your post, just type " ~~~~" at the end. Of course, you have to be logged in, otherwise the signature would not work. As about your questions in the above section: There is no difference between a user and a contributor. Every user's contributions (i.e. edits) are stored into his contributions page (for example, my contributions are here: Special:Contributions/Vanjagenije). If you are logged in with an username, your contributions are stored into the contributions page for your username. If you are not logged in, your contributions are stored to the contributions page of your IP address. You've been using two different usernames ("Steven P. Fisher" and "Steven Paul Fisher") and you also made many edits while logged out. The consequence of this is that your contributions are now stored into three separate pages: Special:Contributions/Steven_Paul_Fisher, Special:Contributions/Steven_P._Fisher and Special:Contributions/24.9.139.246. This is very bad for several reasons. As I understand, you are interested in how the article "Harold mendelsohn" became "Harold Mendelsohn". The answer is easy: the article was moved by User:Dai Pritchard (see the page history here). Steve, we are all trying to help you here, but you have to show at least some sign of cooperation. You've been told at least three times here on this talk page to sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) at the end, but you still sign your posts with "Steve Fisher" or similar. You have to understand that anybody can come here, write something and sign with "Steve Fisher". That is not a proof of identity. But, when you log in with your username, and when you sign your posts with four tildes, the software automatically converts the tildes into your electronic signature, which cannot be forged.
