Kosovo

[edit]

Surely it's POV to call Kosovo a country on wikipedia when the UN does not recognize it as such? 41.245.142.230 (talk) 15:45, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Larry LaRocco

[edit]

I noticed that you stepped into the edit war currently occurring on the Larry LaRocco page and was wondering if you could provide some guidance to a new editor trying to stop the ongoing revisions to this page from an anon user who is intent on posting inflammatory material on a BLP page for a current political candidate. I am not the most conversant in parsing the syntax of wikipedia and have simply been undoing this users edits every chance I get. As you have also attempted to revert the page I assume you have some means to guide me in preventing further abuse by this editor. Sixdegrees2008 (talk) 21:07, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi, I know the reverts you've been making at the above page are probably the right thing to do but perhaps explaining the changes to Jamyfox would have been more constructive than vandal templates? The user did after all think that they were making constructive edits. Also since they weren't actual vandalism you came quite close to a 3RR violation yourself. Thought I'd show you my first noms for deletion, and I had to fight with the templates and criteria a bit. I feel kinda bad about it, actually. I spent a couple days trying to find info to bulk them up and make them into better articles, but it's just not there. Regards. FangedFaerie (Talk | Edits) 06:46, 22 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
While I'm having firsts, thought I'd show off my work on this one. :) Regards. FangedFaerie (Talk | Edits) 03:59, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm at loose ends here. I believe User:Tautologist means well, but s/he's pushing really hard for the (alleged) connection between Sarah Palin and Thomas Muthee. I'm all for making the latter's page more interesting and in-depth about its main subject. I've tried to tone down some of his edits and give some logical info for him to chew on, but he's drowning the Palin talk pages and the Wasilla Assembly of God's talk pages (main page currently in total lockdown) in stuff about witch-hunting. When the editors elsewhere make him leave, he dumps some of it on Muthee's actual page. I don't think he needs to be banned, but I'm not sure what to do from here. Regards. Blocked for 3RR violation

[edit]
You have been blocked from editing for a period of 1 hour in accordance with Wikipedia's blocking policy for violating the three-revert rule. Please be more careful to discuss controversial changes or seek dispute resolution rather than engaging in an edit war. If you believe this block is unjustified, you may contest the block by adding the text {{unblock|your reason here}} below. Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 06:40, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know that the other editor's actions could be seen as vandalism, but it was sufficiently arguable that it would have been better to report him to WP:AN/3RR instead of edit warring. Remember, there are lots of other folks who can revert persistent edit warriors too. Consider this a short shock from the proverbial electric fence. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 06:40, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Note: A log of this block has been made on Talk:Barack_Obama/Article_probation#Log_of_sanctions. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 06:47, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Josiah - are you familiar with this editor's long history of prolific, on-target vandal-fighting? I guess one hour isn't a "big deal" but I'm concerned that it puts a blemish on his record that is perhaps a bit harsh. I realize the Obama article is high-profile, but it looks like Thingg has gotten caught up as unfortunate collateral damage. Perhaps a warning would have sufficed? We most often give vandals 3-4 warnings, after all.  Frank  |  talk  12:29, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I make it a general rule when blocking for 3RR to block all participants who have violated the rule, although I don't always block all of them for the same duration. (The vandal got three hours, which to my mind signals that he was at least three times as much at fault.) I know that it's easy to get carried away when fighting a persistent vandal, but sometimes even a good contributor needs a small reminder. Since Barack Obama is a high-profile article and on article probation, it's got far more eyes on it than the average article and there's all the more reason to let someone else do that fourth revert.
I don't consider a one-hour block a significant blemish — I know lots of folks who've become admins with more and longer blocks! That said, I am human and do make mistakes, and it's true that I wasn't aware of Thingg's vandal-fighting history. I'll look more closely next time I'm blocking for 3RR. Maybe a fifteen-minute block would have been better. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 12:40, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your response. My main reason for concern is that this is a user who has made great vandal-fighting contributions and recently was unsuccessful at RfA, so there seems to be an interest in being able to do even more for the project at a later date, and a block might make that date even later.  Frank  |  talk  14:28, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've been trying to decide whether to comment here or not, as I don't want to pile on and I know the block has expired already. But I just want to confirm that someone else thinks Frank is right; this block doesn't seem terribly rational. Josiah, your comments above indicate you at least knew this was a grey area before you blocked; if so, wouldn't the prudent approach, the respectful approach, have been to send Thingg an orange bar, rather than block him from editing? Whether it was a 15 minute block or an hour block, the thing I have trouble with is that for a good faith editor, a message would stop it as easily as a block would. There has to be a little consideration for individual circumstance here; Thingg was reverting an account, with a 99% chance of being a sleeper of a previously blocked editor, who's only purpose was to get autoconfirmed and to edit war on the page.
That said, I'm not calling for Josiah's head on a platter, and I agree, Thingg, that at most this will force you to write an extra paragraph at your next RFA explaining the situation; it shouldn't do any long term harm.
If it makes you feel any better, I'm reblocking your edit war opponent indefinitely as a blatant POV-SPA-sock-etc. nogoodnik. --barneca (talk) 16:35, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
*sigh* well, I was just trying to help out with the article. I figured I would be safe because of the FAQ #2 on the talk page and the fact he was being most unreasonable. I guess not. :( Thingg 22:04, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, upon reflection I think this block was a bad move on my part. I should have just given a warning. Every referee sometimes makes a bad call, and this was one of mine. I'm sorry, and I'm going to investigate whether there's a way to remove the block from your record. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 02:37, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think the 1-second block with the explanatory note and link, coming directly from you as the blocking admin, are perfect. While I personally had already considered this a "done deal", I now think it's the best possible result. This stuff happens, and it's been cleaned up, and that's the way the world should work.  Frank  |  talk  00:28, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Barack Obama has been nominated for a featured article review. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. Please leave your comments and help us to return the article to featured quality. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, articles are moved onto the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article from featured status. Orphaned non-free media

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Bachna Ae Haseeno.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:05, 27 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Adminshipp Round 2

[edit]

so apparently we've in an adminship crisis ... only 7 promotions last month! have you considered making another go? I'd be happy to nom you again and there's also an open offer for nomination statements from a 'crat so he could possibly co-nom. whaddya thinkk? –xeno (talk) 12:50, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's still just as much of a fire pit as it was the last time around... hopefully that 3rr thing won't be a problem because the admin rescinded it with the comment, you'll just need to make a statement in your opening as to the particulars. you had a decent amount of support the last time around, the CSD thing seemed to have been what really set things on the downward spiral. lemme write up the nom sometime this weekend and then you can decide if you wanna make another go at it. –xeno (talk) 14:03, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I could probably be convinced to co-nom, and I could focus on that block thing since I said something about it at the time. Let me know, U2.  Frank  |  talk  14:52, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I asked Dweller if he wanted to write something based on his recent post to WT:RFA, but he said he's been busy, so I'm not sure if he'll have time- so go ahead and have at it if Thingg's ok with that. though, I already touched upon the B.O. block thing. –xeno (talk) 15:13, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the response. I tend to prefer warnings to be given, as it creates a clear record of efforts to try to encourage editors to do something constructive on wikipedia. Reversed edits on Paint.Net

[edit]

I have to disagree; the Paint.Net web site does not claim it is open source, and the license makes no claims about *what* is available. It also does not claim the software is available.

The source code is not available on their web site, and a request for the source code resulted in the response shown on the 'talk' page of the Paint.Net entry.

Is there anything else that I should do to verify that it is NOT open source any more?

I however see no reason how informative external links violate the policy. Also, was this policy applied very recently? Because those links have been there for months, now. Please take a look on this guys edits. Most of them are unsourced changes in the articles concerning the history of Poland. He errases the data that some parts of this country was also part of it before the WWII and leaves some unsourced data that usually says "in the opinion of the polish historians" "as the polish historians name it" and so on. Please look what had he done with the article about the episcopal duchy of Warmia, which used to look | that way (it was smaller but the data was not POVish and was sourced). Now it looks like | that. Thats just pure antipolish POV. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.253.68.65 (talk) 18:53, 10 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

it's completely understandable. I had to get a new graphics card myself! ain't that a coincidence! what does your computer take? PCI, PCI-e, ADR, etc.? Mine's a PCI, so I got the Best one for it, a geforce 6200 G. card. every thing above that is PCI-e, dammit. at least when you play a console game, you know that it's gonna work, right? I'm also gonna get LBP for the PS3, although I hear the storyline is super short, and most of it is user generated. also, I don't play on-line, except for late at night, sometimes, on the weekends. Thanks for the quick response. The Deletetion A7 tag was for the unsourced info that had been added to the disamb page by someone who appears to have thought that it was an article. There looked like there might be enough info to create a page if a source could be found, but I don't know anything about the subject and didn't want to create a page that would then be deleted, and also didn't want to remove some info that could be moved and expanded.Tobyc75 (talk) 22:04, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Moose Factory, Ontario

[edit]

"Moose Factory is also home to NHL star Max Krakowski. Max "The Golden Moose" Krakowski holds the single game record for total goals, with 17. He did this on September 11, 2001 and no one cared. The opposing goaltender Roman Turek said after the match, "I shit myself after the first slap shot hit my blocker. I was just lucky to make it out of there alive." Backup goalie Chico Resch wasn't so lucky. He died at 15:17 into the third period from a puck to the face."

Can't you see this is obviously fiction and you're reverting my last attempt to remove it?

Islands of Adventure

[edit]

Hey there. Thanks for keeping track of the Islands of Adventure article. I reverted something earlier and left a message on the user's talk page. I don't know if a Level 2 warning was necessary, since the edit you reverted and the one I reverted were made in good faith, in my opinion. In retrospect, however, the edit you reverted was simply wrong, since the park has switched to a bar-code scanner that eliminates that possibility altogether. User:64.160.203.138 Vandalism... again...

[edit]

Just wanted to give you the heads-up that this user has gone past your recent final warning and vandalized the Francis Bacon page. I reverted that, then went to say "hey please don't do that." only to discover that this IP is a repeated vandal, even after multiple blocks in the past. Why isn't the IP just completely perma-blocked at this point? Seems a waste of resources and people's time to keep banning for short periods, only for the vandal to pop right back up again and go at it for several days... Thanks in advance for the help. Hey. Can you do something about this?

[edit]

I've been extremely annoyed by random people CONSTANTLY VANDALIZING the "Pro Wrestling X" (video game) article. It is almost done and will soon be released as you will find if you go to their website (www.prowrestlingx.com) still some immature @#$^@% keep editing the page providing 10000% false information (that the game has been cancelled and that its makers are already on different projects and such nonsense). I have been re-editing the way it should be as much as I've been able to. Since I'm not too familiar with wikipedia and wanted to contact and admin, and seing that YOU are one, please is there something that can be done to prevent vandalism? Perhaps locking the "edit" option for a while? Or tracing the vandals and warning them? ( I have also contacted 2 more admins and you're the last one I will because I don't want to be considered a spammer or anything ).Much appreciated --MarkosChR (talk) 14:03, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I would like your help on modifying this article to not qualify as "ad-like". I don't see the differnce to articles such as innocent drinks or glassesdirect. All the information in the article is factual and can be verified (by simple Google searches). Hello, perhaps i need some education; but how is it that a video game like Warhawk can merit a Wikipedia entry whereas a global financial informaton provider delivering information about opaque markets cannot? My post followed almost directly in the format of the page for Factiva, which in fact is a service of very similar scope. Merely because one belongs to a household name in the US and the other doewsn't, though it is part of the largest publisher in Europe?

I feel that these distinctions are biased by the crowd that tenmds to become an administraor. Frankly, it seems to me a disservice to the public, if not pure hypocirisy. Had my post been about a video game for sale at blockbuster and obsessed over by techies, it woudl have no problem being put onWikipedia.

It is very disappointing to see this double standard. If one cannot list a company because people like you see a commercial bogeyman behind even the most generic statements, what good is this as a research tool in the long term? (By the way, I use wikipedia all the time for comapny research, and I know I am not alone.)

Full disclosure; this is the first time I have ever posted to Wikipedia...I assure you, I am not some profit crazed link builder, but I sure am confused by the rules here, which seem more arbitrary that they need to be.

Thanks in advance for guiding me on what would make a post of this sort acceptable.

Deletion of size2shoes

[edit]

The deletion of Size2shoes was unprecedented. The group's importance was referenced fully and complied to two of the band/musical group notability criteria as listed on my talk page. Another administrator (see user talk for Theosony) asked me to restart the article using the references, which I did, proving the band's importance. The have (as proven and sources through Ireland's Limerick Leader article (sourced)) received television coverage (national) and national radio coverage and have toured extensively as size2shoes and with other artists. Therefore I ask for a justification of the deletion and an answer as to why the page was deleted considering it adhered to at least one (one required) piece of criteria on the notability guidelines.--Theosony (talk) 19:01, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:BinLadenVictoryOverWTC-AlHayat-12-9-2007.JPG.

I tried to edit the article by deleting what could be interpreted as advertisement. I used mostly research from the internet and their website. I looked at the article about Dogster during the creation of the article as an inspiration/model. Let me know.

RE: But what about Dogster ? I don't see how the situation differs, as the Dogster article doesn't give any references. Should I re-edit the article and submit it to you? I'm not sure of the procedure in this case. CigarFox.com

[edit]

Hi Thingg.

The importance of my latest article regarding CigarFox is the Legislation that has been passed in Michigan at the same time this business launched a website. The history of a long standing tobacco business (as well as) others is changing. Since CigarFox.com launched in 2008 (at the same time this legislation had passed) is an interesting topic especially with the state of the economy. I personally do not smoke and tried to make that a neutral point of view but I actually don't mind this new legislation. Please look at JR Cigars page - Is there a big difference between the importance of CigarFox.com and JR Cigars importance? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JR_Cigars I am happy to hear how I can edit and work with you to keep this article 'live."

Yes that's what I thought, but it's just a confusing article, it actually was voted the fifth best cover. The last two paragraphs talk about a seperate best cover poll, also see TG's Best Covers EVER!, the primary source for the whole thing. --AmaltheaTalk 00:09, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
But combine that with the penultimate paragraph which starts with "Jimi Hendrix's version of Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower was voted the best cover", and the primary source which says "TG's Best Covers EVER! [...] Check out the Top 5 below! [...] 5. MUSE - Feeling Good".
There's a second article that lists the worst five, which is the one with Celine Dion at #1. I'm really sure that news.com.au combined the two into one confusing article. We can move this to the article Talk page though if I can't convince you. :) Cheers, AmaltheaTalk 00:47, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

is an unlikely misnomer for Remote deposit capture, hence my tagging as CSD#R3. All the references that were provided in Remote Data Capture used "deposit" not "data", and this is a concept not a product, so capitalization is not appropriate. Those references have been merged to Remote deposit, and Remote deposit capture redirects there. If you think that the R3 for Remote Data Capture is not appropriate, you might want to open a DRV as well, since I closed the AfD as "keep, redirect and rename". My artile on NEC ExpressCluster did not include any promotional material as stated by you. I saw many other articles about similar product on wikipedia, I think they are promoting their product but still they are there on wikipedia. Kindly refer to Veritas Cluster Server, Microsoft Cluster Server. All these pages are simply promoting their respective product. Kindly give me some solid reason why these pages are here on wikipedia and why my page is deleted although my article was totally generic in nature.

Regarding NEC ExpressCluster Article

[edit]

Hi Thingg,

Thanks for your kind reply and letting me know your reason of deletion. I think if in case some one things the article is non notable, that article should be discussed with author or in broader community before taking the final decision to delete it. If articles will be deleted without discussion there will remain no scope of improvement or knowing the issues in article. I appriciate that you gave me your viewpoint on my article.

Can you kindly let me know when I again post the article on wikipedia how can I give the references for verification purpose so that it do not again get deleted. Do I need to give the references in "References" section of article or somewhere else. Sorry to bother you on these questions. I am very new to Wikipedia editing.

I am providing you few references on internet which migh change your opinion on the notability part of ExpressCluster. May I kindly request you to have a look at following third party links or news to know that NEC's ExpressCluster is a popular software in enterprise domain and it deserves to be notable on Wikipedia.

Regarding my last post about NEC ExpressCluster article

[edit]

Hi Thingg, I hope you are doing good. Can you indly respond to my last msg on your talk page. Its about my explaination for the notability of NEC ExpressCluster article. Kindly do reply and let me know when can I post the same article.--Gauravd05 (talk) 00:49, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks !

[edit]

Thanks Thingg for your detailed writeup on my talk page. I would also like to thank you for guiding me in writting better wikipedia articles. May I kindly request you to give me the copy of NEC ExpressCluster article that was deleted. I will use that as a base for posting new article.

As I do not want my article to be deleted again :) can I have some more clarifications on citations.

1.Can I give all the links that I provided you under citations or references section at the end of my article without refering to them in an article ?

2. As my article will be small initially, can I give all these citations at one or two places in my article ?

Thanks once again ! --Gauravd05 (talk) 05:14, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AHSA Page

[edit]

Hi, I am the Political Director of the American Hunters and Shooters website. And since June our site has not reflected the true nature of our organization. Instead it is constantly edited by many of our enemies... We hired a consultant to handle this problem in Sept 2007 and it was resolved and okay until June. We are currently in a wiki war. Wikipedia has become a very important part of pop culture and cursory research. It is very important that our site accurately reflect our organization.

Please advise on how to proceed in resolving problems with our site. —Preceding unsigned comment added by LBZoeller (talkcontribs) 16:25, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Heads up about the Ashley Tisdale revert

[edit]

I just wanted to let you know that "she is fit" is still the prevailing page for Ashley Tisdale. I don't know how long it generally takes to revert when you tell it to, but if it is supposed to be immediate it didn't work.

re: 68.45.253.51

[edit]

Hey, thanks for blocking the guy. Could I also ask if you could protect the Sonic the Hedgehog (character) article? It's been hit with lots of vandals on weekly, if not daily, basis in the past few months, and that guy was just the latest. NeoChaosX (talk, edits) 16:35, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

changes to crocodile relative pages.

[edit]

The changes I recently made to various pages of extinct crocodylian relatives (e.g. Goniopholis) do NOT constitute vandalism. I was updating the pages to reflect current taxonomy in the peer-reviewed literature (some of which was written by me - I am a professor of vertebrate paleontology at the University of Iowa). The simple fact is that the peer-reviewed literature, as a whole, no longer regards animals like Goniopholis to be crocodylians (or crocodilians). They are crocodyliforms.

Have a look at, for example,

Brochu, C. A. 2003. Phylogenetic approaches toward crocodylian history. Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences. 31:357-397.

Your user page - possibly misformatted?

[edit]

I noticed that you have two boxes on your user page that sit at the very bottom of the page, overlapping other info. This appears to be caused by this line :<div style="position:absolute; bottom:-275px; width:98%">. Changing that "absolute" to "bottom" appears to correct it, but I didn't want to change your user page without giving you a heads up. Cheers! TNX-Man 17:01, 29 October 2008 (UTC) [reply]

Hello, Thingg. You have new messages at Tnxman307's talk page.

vandalism?

[edit]

Why did you call my edits to the Prop 2 article "vandalism?" As I stated on the discussion page, those entire sections are completely irrelevant to what Prop 2 does. If you read the initiative, you can see this for yourself.

Thanks! Madaxecho (talk) 23:01, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

SatMex 5

[edit]

I'd listed a source http://www.lyngsat.com/sm5.html which indicated XEWT-TV 12 Tijuana, Baja California programming is carried on the SatMex 5 communications satellite. I notice that you've reverted without explanation. I presume the source to be reliable. ¿Que pasa? --66.102.80.212 (talk) 23:21, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You recently reverted an edit of mine on the page on Chris Masoe, saying it was vandalism. If you call removing two dead links from the external links section fine. Try doing a little follow up work before calling someone a vandal next time.

Proposition 2 article

[edit]

If you're a wikipedia administrator but you "don't really care" about whether or not an article contains misleading information, I suggest that wikipedia find administrators who are willing to do a little research before labeling changes "vandalism." All you have to do is look at the language of Prop 2 to see that the sections that I deleted are completely irrelevant to the legislation. Madaxecho (talk) 00:55, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

um. . .

[edit]

why did you revert my edit to appeal to nature? The xref I added is a well-known example of how the argument can be misinterpreted or misused. 71.248.115.187 (talk) 01:38, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
