WikiCup 2012 April newsletter

Round 2 of this year's WikiCup is over, and so we are down to our final 32, in what could be called our quarter-finals. The two highest scorers from each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers overall, have entered round 3, while 30 participants have been eliminated. Pool B's Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) remains our top scorer with over 700 points; he continues to gain high numbers of points for his good articles on The X-Files, but also Millennium and other subjects. He has also gained points for a good topic, a featured list, multiple good article reviews and several did you knows. Pool E's Scotland Casliber (submissions) was second, thanks primarily to his biology articles, with Pool H's New York City Muboshgu (submissions) coming in third, with an impressive 46 did you knows, mostly on the subject of baseball. Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both scored over 600 points. Pools E and H proved our most successful, with each seeing 5 members qualify for round 3, while Pools C and D were the least, with each seeing only 3 reach round 3. However, it was Pool G which saw the lowest scoring, with a little under 400 points combined; Pool H, the highest scoring group, saw over triple that score.

65 points was the lowest qualifying score for round 3; significantly higher than the 11 required to enter round 2, and also higher than the 41 required to reach round 3 last year. However, in 2010, 100 points were needed to secure a place in round 3. 16 will progress to round 4. In round 3, 150 points was the 16th highest score, though, statistically, people tend to up their game a little in later rounds. Last year, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 points were needed. Guessing how many points will be required is not easy. We still have not seen any featured portals or topics this year, but, on the subject of less common content types, a small correction needs to be made to the previous newsletter: File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg, our first featured picture, was the work of both Vanuatu Matthewedwards (submissions) and United Kingdom Grandiose (submissions), the latter of whom has also gone on to score with File:Map of the Battle of Guam, 1944.svg. Bonus points also continue to roll in; this round, England Ealdgyth (submissions) earned triple points for her good articles on William the Conqueror and the Middle Ages, Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both earned triple points for their work on Western Jackdaw, now a good article, Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions) earned triple points for her work on lettuce and work by Bavaria Stone (submissions) to ready antimony for good article status earned him triple points. United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) managed to expand Vitus Bering far enough for a did you know, which was also worth triple points. All of these highly important topics featured on 50 or more Wikipedias at the start of the year.

An article on the WikiCup in the Wikimedia Blog, "Improving Wikipedia with friendly competition", was posted at the end of April. This may be of interest to those who are signed up to this newsletter, as well as serving as another way to draw attention to our project. Also, we would again like to thank United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) and Bavaria Stone (submissions), for continued help behind the scenes. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. GA Review of Wieferich prime

Wieferich prime is on my watch list, and so I saw your GA review at Talk:Wieferich prime/GA1. Unfortunately, I do not understand what the symbols in your review mean. You seem to have marked everything apart from items 5 and 6 as "neutral". Does this mean you haven't reviewed against the other criteria ? If so, will you be returning to complete the review ? Or are you expecting another reviewer to complete it ? A short note on the review page to clarify your meaning and intentions would be useful. Thanks. Gandalf61 (talk) 13:08, 7 May 2012 (UTC)

Saw your note, which clarifies everything. Thanks. Gandalf61 (talk) 11:41, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

Dostoyevsky

Great to see Dostoyevsky finally getting his due! I was just wondering if/when you're going to get rid of or bury that shitty Nabokov comment in the "influence" section? It's embarrasing enough that the comment is preserved in that news clip on the talk page. Cheers, and good luck with Sveta! 71.94.3.209 (talk) 05:06, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi GOP. I've had a look at Catch a Fire and finished the initial review. I've put it on hold for seven days to allow you time to work on the issues raised. Let me know if you have any queries. SilkTork ✔Tea time 13:04, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

I didn't nominate the Black Stone

You left a note on my talk page congratulating me on the elevation of The Black Stone to a good article. But I didn't nominate it. Zora (talk) 19:19, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

Your barnstar

Thanks so much! Much appreciated and I'd like to take the time to say "Thanks" to you too, for all of your hard work on the music articles. I'm going to try to find more time to help by copy editing - esp. on GA nominations. If there are any articles you want help with specifically let me know... like most of us, I can more easily spot little tweaks needed when the work is not my own.  :) Agadant (talk) 15:17, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

Are my edits OK to you so far? I do not want to be too heavy handed. Also please doublecheck my edits for accuracy with the sources.--Wehwalt (talk) 18:39, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

GA nomination of Jacob L. Beilhart

Thank you very much for your review of the article. I appreciate the feedback. I've addressed the only concern that I saw and expanded the lead. If you have a moment, I'd appreciate your thoughts on it. I'd also like to ask your opinion on citations within the lead. Wikipedia:Lede#Citations seems to offer flexibility depending on consensus. My inclination is to use minimal citations in the lead since all of the material will be repeated elsewhere with inline citations. Wikipelli Talk 18:46, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Youth

Fyodor and his brother Mikhail were sent around May to St Petersburg to attend the Nikolayev Military Engineering Institute, while their younger siblings were sent to different families. Fyodor and Mikhail had to abandon the academic education at the Moscow college, as their adoptive parents were not able to pay for the schoolfee.

This statement from the youth section of Dostoyevsky is contradictory. It states that the younger siblings were sent to other families, not Mikhail and Fyodor, and that Mikhail and Fyodor went directly to Petersburg. INeverCry 03:47, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for catching this big error! I corrected it immediately. Regards.--GoPTCN 09:23, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

JSTOR

GOP, a look at your efforts on Dostoyevsky convinces me you don't have access to JSTOR, [1]. I am sure there must be much on him there. If you send me an email with the articles you want (it will let you look at the first page, unless the article is so short it's basically the whole thing), I will download them as pdfs and email them to you. I ask for an email because I can't send attachments through the Wikipedia system. Just send me the URLs. Please feel free to impose on me, it is not any trouble, and ask for as many as you want as often as you want.--Wehwalt (talk) 17:23, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks!!

My first ever - I actually had to look it up on the Wikipedia Help page to learn more! I appreciate it. Jmg38 (talk) 21:03, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

The article The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads for things which need to be addressed. Dostoyevsky Themes/Style/CE

I've copy-edited about 1/3 of the article and done a bit to expand the lead, though that could be better. After thinking about your request regarding the themes/style sections, I would rather stick to copy-editing, which is what I usually do. I'm really bad at critical things, and my friend Evermore2 takes care of all that in the articles you've seen, while I mostly just copy-edit his "Runglish". I honestly don't think I'm at all qualified do the critical sections of Dostoyevsky. My stuff for Crabbe was basically thrown together, and Crabbe is much less complex than Dostoyevsky. I'll keep going on copy-edits in the bio, but you've got to find somebody way better than me for the other stuff. INeverCry 02:58, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your copyedits! I know it is difficult to build a themes/style section for Dostoyevsky. I asked you because your English is much better than mine and you made great contributions to many articles. But hey, I wrote a full biography plus several sections, so with more patience and mood I could write a nice section. Regards.--GoPTCN 07:23, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
I can transform whatever you add into good English. That's what I do here 90% of the time. The other thing is that it's been years since I read Dostoyevsky, so I would be approaching the whole thing from scratch. With the complexity and importance of Dostoyevsky, I would think that you should probably get the opinion of someone with literary FA experience. Maybe the person who did Chekhov. My Russian friend says that he would rather see a "critical reception" section than the broken up "themes" and "style". INeverCry 20:20, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Hello

On your user page you should really credit yourself with more than an intermediate level of English language use. Are you familiar with the different translations of D. into English? I'm wondering if the Pevear-Volokonsky [sic] is really that much better than the older ones like Garnett, because there's a lot of hype, and I don't have any Russian language to judge on. carl bunderson (talk) (contributions) 16:40, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

Attempted to address your concerns. Tough to find stuff on history as the term was only coined in 1825. Not sure if you are able to think of some sources... --Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 02:33, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the well-meaning not re expanding the lede for this article. However, please see Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section#Length. Articles 30,0000 bytes and over are supposed to have a 3-4 paragraph lede. You also have no idea (A) what I may do to condense or refine this lede or (B) what else I may do to expand this article, which more than one editor had admitted it needs. (There's practically nothing on Rubinstein as a composer or on his relationship with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, to mention two points that need to be addressed.) In short, you are being premature and rude. A note of inquiry on my talk page would have been more appropriate. Jonyungk (talk) 20:16, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

Threni (Stravinsky)

Hello GreatOrangePumpkin. Thanks very much for taking on the GA review of Threni. I agree with your suggestions for an expanded lead section, and have done something. Please could you take a look? --Stfg (talk) 14:12, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

Hello again. Thank you for giving the article such a prompt review. It's much appreciated. Best regards, --Stfg (talk) 19:19, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

Collaborate?

Hi GOP, would you be interested in "officially" collaborating on the Amylostereum article? Normally, I would have taken up the GA review (not many fungi articles appear there that I haven't worked on myself), but I don't think I should anymore as I've made too many edits. I plan to keep on expanding the article (there's 218 articles listed in the Web of Knowledge, so lots of information yet to add), and, if you're interested, a FAC nomination probably wouldn't be too far off when I've finished updating the literature. I see you're in the Wikicup, so perhaps you might consider a similar translation arrangement for the other German-language fungal GAs without equivalent English articles? Sasata (talk) 20:41, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I plan to translate some of the fungi articles. Most of the animal articles are unfortunately not properly sourced, but the fungi are one of the exceptions. I am also happy to collaborate with you :). I have HighBeam so I could help dig some sources. Regards.--GoPTCN 10:26, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
Very good, looking forward to working with you and getting some more high-quality fungus articles for WP:Fungi! Sasata (talk) 15:37, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 May newsletter

We're halfway through round 3 (or the quarter finals, if you prefer) and things are running smoothly. We're seeing very high scoring; as of the time of writing, the top 16 all have over 90 points. This has already proved to be more competative than this time last year- in 2011, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 was the lowest qualifying score. People have also upped their game slightly from last round, which is to be expected as we approach the end of the competition. Leading Pool A is Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), whose points have mostly come from a large number of did you knows on marine biology. Pool B's leader, Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), is for the first time not our highest scorer at the time of newsletter publication, but his good articles on The X-Files and Millenium keep him in second place overall. Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) leads Pool C, our quietest pool, with content in a variety of areas on a variety of topics. Pool D is led by Scotland Casliber (submissions), our current overall leader. Nearly half of Casliber's points come from his triple-scored Western Jackdaw, which is now a featured article.

This round has seen an unusually high number of featured lists, with nearly one in five remaining participants claiming one, and one user, New York City Muboshgu (submissions), claiming two. Miyagawa's featured list, 1936 Summer Olympics medal table, was even awarded double points. By comparison, good article reviews seem to be playing a smaller part, and featured topics portals remain two content-types still unutilised in this competition. Other than that, there isn't much to say! Things are coming along smoothly. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck!
