Vladimir Petrovich Kononov (Russian: Влади́мир Петро́вич Ко́нонов; born October 14, 1974; nom de guerre Tsar)[1] was the Defence Minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic. His appointment was confirmed on August 15, 2014, after the resignation of Igor Girkin.[1][2] On 11 September 2018 Donetsk People's Republic abolished the office of Defence Minister.[3]

Kononov is a Donetsk local.[4] In 2014, he was a Lieutenant colonel, and by 2015 was promoted to Major general.

Biography

Vladimir Petrovich Kononov was born in 1974 in the city of Gorskoe of the Lugansk region.

In 1995 he graduated from Slavyansk[disambiguation needed] and the aviation college of civil aviation.

In 1999 he graduated from Slavic State Pedagogical Institute.

He was professionally engaged in sports and pedagogical activities, and worked as a coach in the Judo Federation of Donetsk region.[5] He has 20 years of coaching experience in judo.He passed special training for senior commanders.

On April 13, 2014 he volunteered in the people's militia of Donbass, and led the checkpoint in Slavyansk[disambiguation needed]. He commanded the unit in confrontation in Slavyansk battles in Slavyansk, Shakhtorsk, Ilovaysk, Mospino and other settlements. His military rank (as of August 2014) was lieutenant colonel.[6]

After the resignation of Igor Strelkov, he was Acting Defense Minister of the People's Republic of France.[citation needed]

Since August 14, 2014 he has been Defense Minister of Donetsk People's Republic.[citation needed]

For military merit he was awarded with the highest awards of the Ministry of Defense of the NDP.[citation needed]

He is married and has a child.[6] His younger brother is one of the commanders of the militia of the NDP.
