Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
    • For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
    • Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
    • If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
    • Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
    • For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
    • New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

    DCOUTO TEACHER - MANGALORE- INDIA

Born : 1935 to an Anglo-Indian Family of 14 children.and was the youngest of her Siblings. Worked as a Kindergarten Teacher for the AC nuns in Mangalore India. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Viviancanute (talkcontribs) 14:57, 25 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Viviancanute. What is your question about editing Wikipedia? Are you asking for somebody to write an article about somebody? If so, you need to find reliable published sources that discuss this person, and make a request at Requested articles (the more reliable sources you provide about him, the more likely it is that somebody will decide to create the article, though there is no guarantee somebody will). If that is not what you are asking, please clarify. --ColinFine (talk) 19:09, 25 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Revert vs. over-editing

Whenever possible I am careful to revert others' edits instead of simply over-editing. I believe the editor who inserted the edit I am reverting:

    • has the right to know their edit has been reverted
    • has the right to have a reason for the revert
    • has the right to object to it
    • has a right to learn from it (I certainly do)

So with this long-winded introduction I also have a question about a particular reversion I just carried out - why does this show as an over-edit and not as a revert? Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 23:03, 25 December 2015 (UTC)please ping me[reply]

Ottawahitech I am not sure what over-editing is but to me it looks like you reverted User:RevelationDirect changes. MilborneOne (talk) 23:08, 25 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The reason I thought this looked like a regular edit is that the words "Undid revision xxx" were missing. Ottawahitech (talk) 02:39, 26 December 2015 (UTC)please ping me[reply]
@MilborneOne: I'm following up on this conversation here so it's in one place: User talk:Ottawahitech#Untagging Categories in Open Category for Discussion Nominations. Thanks, in advance for your input. RevelationDirect (talk) 03:28, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. You cannot join Wikipedia with a name that represents a company. Accounts should represent individuals, and should only be used by one person.
If you're trying to edit on behalf of a company, I advise you not to do so. Please see our guidelines on having a conflict of interest. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 07:55, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Mike. The problem we have with your message is that the artile Ben Richards (actor) cites this article from The Argus, which says "Last month, the Argus told how her brother, Ben Richards, introduced to dance by Lisa, landed the lead role in hit West End musical Saturday Night Fever." I appreciate that papers sometimes get things wrong, but they're the best we have: with respect, we've no way of telling who you are, or whether your information is correct. Do you have some other published evidence that the Argus is wrong? --ColinFine (talk) 10:14, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The antecedent of "her" is ambiguous: The article is about Benson, but the immediately preceding sentence mentions "Art Of Dance teacher Lisa Davies," which may match Mike's statement. —teb728 t c 10:54, 26 December 2015 (UTC) In light of the ambiguity I have removed Benson from the article. —teb728 t c 18:30, 26 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, one for Greg: having had a contribution edited for "advertising", my latest update on the March Violets page was again edited for having promotional material - something I thought I had been scrupulous to avoid. The deleted sentence simply stated that other promotional material was available for the new album. which is factually true. The Pledge Music project came with a wide range of add on extras. I didn't list what this material was nor elaborate further. Before contributing again, I'd like to know why this fact was deemed inappropriate, so that I don't repeat the mistake. You didn't fail. You made a correctly working link in [1] before posting here. Note however that we usually pipe the link per Help:Link#Section linking (anchors), so # is not displayed to readers. The code here would be [[#St Martin's Church|St Martin's Church]]. My Old Wiki entries

    Hello!

I am pleased to be a regular (although small) financial donor to Wikipedia! I am having issues with content of mine prior to 2013. The topic The Honour Criss of the World War 1814/1918 was my biggest contribution. I did that in June 2012 but it must have been under a previous user ID, possibly panzermeister? I can't see an edit history for the topic so am unsure of my earlier user ID. I would like to transfer my previous input content to my current name but don't know how to do this. Would anyone be able to help me with that please?

    Thanks in advance!

    Troy Tempest (Troy von Tempest)

PS - I wanted to use my real name but it has been taken. I am not sure why I had to change my user name, possibly had trouble logging on and just found it easier to create a new ID? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Troy von Tempest (talkcontribs) 00:58, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Troy von Tempest: I guess you mean The Honour Cross of the World War 1914/1918. The page history [2] shows edits in 2012 by User:Von tempest. Special:Contributions/Von tempest shows the account stopped editing in 2013. Edits by different accounts cannot be merged. If it's you and you want to show a connection between the accounts then you can write on the user pages that it's the same person. If you have forgotten the password but still have access to the stored email address then you can request a new password at Special:PasswordReset. User:Panzermeister was created in 2008 and renamed to User:Panzermeister~enwiki in 2015, mentioned at User talk:Panzermeister~enwiki. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:13, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I am wondering if I may edit the page 'Neymar'? He has brothers (mainly half and step) that are not included. I would like to add them If that is fine. Please and thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Barrypatterson85 (talkcontribs) 02:52, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    • @Barrypatterson85: That article is semi-protected so only autoconfirmed editors can edit it. This was done for a reason. You do not have the proper permissions to edit that page directly however, you can submit an edit request. This can be done by clicking on the "view source" button at the top and then the blue "submit an edit request" button. Please note that all requests must be specific (in a change X to Y format) and all claims must be backed up by reliable sources. --Stabila711 (talk) 02:59, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If the brothers that you are referring to are the same ones as the nonsense edits that you made here and here then the answer is no. MarnetteD|Talk 03:01, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Substitution in comments

Under Help:Substitution#Documenting substitution, it states: "Thus a comment can be used to mention the template. It can even contain the values of the parameters, because substitution of parameters works even in comments." I believe this to be wrong, as User:AlexTheWhovian/Upcoming substitutes the provided parameter into the un-commented version of {{{1}}}, but not the occurrences of {{{1}}} that are inside the comment, as seen at User:AlexTheWhovian/sandbox#DNI substitution. How do I fix this? Alex|The|Whovian 03:23, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Mithilsoni200. I have found the reference on the Wayback machine and have updated the citation accordingly: see Link rot for how to do this in general. However, I don't see that the archived webpage supports the claim, and have accordingly tagged it as {{not in refs}}. The page says you need to subscribe for more information about the film's earnings, which would not have ruled out using it as a reference, but I doubt if it is possible to do that on the archived copy, so I'm not sure what needs to happen now. --ColinFine (talk) 16:32, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Frederick Robert Karl (1927–2004)

Hi, It seems to me that the last paragraph is a private opinion of someone who did create this page about Frederick Karl Robert and should be removed. Thanks

Frederick Karl From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia For the Florida politician and judge, see Frederick B. Karl.

Frederick Robert Karl (1927–2004) was a literary biographer, best known for his work on Joseph Conrad, a literary critic, and an editor. He spent 25 years teaching at City College of New York and then followed with 18 years at New York University.

His first work, A Reader's Guide to Great 20th-Century English Novels, discussed writers such as E. M. Forster, D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf and Joseph Conrad. He went on to write extensive biographies about Conrad, William Faulkner, Franz Kafka, and George Eliot. He also edited a multi-volume series, Biography and Source Studies, and co-edited a volume of letters between Conrad and Laurence Davies.

In 1968, he signed the “Writers and Editors War Tax Protest” pledge, vowing to refuse tax payments in protest against the Vietnam War.[1]

Karl's book American Fiction, 1940-1980: A Comprehensive History & Critical Evaluation is infamous for omitting William Saroyan, one of the 20th century's most popular, esteemed, and influential writers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.18.124.187 (talk) 10:54, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Young Fabians/Richard Leonard

A colleague of mine tried to correct the entry on Young Fabians, where I am referred to as 'Richard Leonard', a name by which I am never known, and to substitute 'Dick' for 'Richard'. He was refused by one of your editors on the ground that there is a main entry about me, entitled 'Richard Leonard'. I would humbly request that not only the Young Fabians mention, but also the main entry title should be amended to 'Dick', as not only all my books, but also my nomenclature as a Member of Parliament, and all the (n0w infrequent) references to me in the media name me as 'Dick'.

I shuld be most grateful if this could be done,

    Hello IP 76.64.54.147
There is no CD/DVD available with the entire Wikipedia content - the problem is the size of the files - currently 11.6 Gigabytes, just for the articles.
The database can be downloaded free of charge, if you have a good enough internet connection - please see Wikipedia:Database download for details.
A limited selection of articles (typically 6000 articles) were available for schools on CD see Wikipedia:Wikipedia CD Selection - but that information is out of date, and the CDs are no longer produced. - Arjayay (talk) 17:16, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
One possibility would be to download the 11.6 GB while you are in Canada, and save it to a hard drive to take back home with you. The download might take hours if you have a slow internet connection. Dbfirs 17:27, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

More importantly, all facts need to be referenced. Since this is the English Wikipedia, we prefer independent sources written in English, but if the subject has been written about in Russian newspapers, then you could use these as references. The subject's own website is not considered to be a reliable source. See Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons for some guidance. Dbfirs 17:12, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi person editing from 39.216.210.155. The citation is formatted by a citation template, in this case, {{cite web}}. If you click on that you'll see that it has parameters, named data fields, where you can fill in information after an equal sign. One existing parameter is for quotes i.e., |quote =. For whatever reason, when this was added the person attempted to shoehorn the quote next to the parameter for title – even though it was not part of the title – and so the linked title oddly contained the quote. I simply took the quote from there and added it next to |quote= All this is not as difficult as it might seem as first blush; you just need a bit of study getting yourself acclimated. In other words, you could do this yourself and we always need more helping hands. Although you don't need to do so to edit most things, signing up for an account takes only a minute or so and has many benefits. If you do, I suggest taking a tour through the Wikipedia:Tutorial as a first step. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:16, 27 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I thought you might mean the blue background when a reference number is clicked. Thanks to Fuhghettaboutit for figuring it out. When an external link is produced with the method at Help:Link#External links, the link name becomes blue text. {{cite web}} uses the title parameter as link name when the external link is generated. The article inappropriately said {{cite web|title=English Heritage - "Arthur's brothers, Francis and Darnton, developed the land south of the Hall as a building speculation" - Newton Hall Gate Piers and Flanking Wall|...}}. Therefore, all of this became blue text: "English Heritage - "Arthur's brothers, Francis and Darnton, developed the land south of the Hall as a building speculation" - Newton Hall Gate Piers and Flanking Wall". ISBN or isbn coding when formatting book sources.

Why is your ISBN 13 code not recognised when formatting?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Jgrantduff (talkcontribs)

@Jgrantduff: Please give an example of the perceived problem. Do you mean ISBN 978-6-224-06319-7 in [3]? That appears to be invalid. Where did you get it? I don't get any Google hits on it but ISBN 978-0-224-06319-7 works (also in references), so I guess you or somebody else got a digit wrong. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:06, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) Hey Jgrantduff. You had a typo in the isbn that I've fixed. It's 978-0... not 978-6... The software recognized that there was a problem. By the way, please remember to sign your posts on discussion pages like this one (but never in articles) by adding adding four tildes (~~~~) at the end. you can also click on the signature button ( or ) located above the edit window which will place them for you. This will automatically insert a signature with your username and a date-time stamp when you save. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:08, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Baffled by "Usernames" in Article Revision History

I was checking the revision history on an article and noticed a series of changes made by a "user" with the identifier, "2601:58c:0:2c9c:d987:2c37:204c:f236." Although I am used to seeing IP addresses as surrogates for user names, this was the first time I have noticed this format. A number of changes were made by this user and at least one other with a similar identifier to the article over the past few days. I would appreciate it if you could shed some light on what an identifier with this structure on an article's history page signifies.

The user names appear at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Uniform_Certified_Public_Accountant_Examination&action=history

How to enable the enhanced editing toolbar by personal js page?

Hi! I'm a WikEd user, so enhanced editing toolbar is redundance for me in most of time. But in editing module pages, its highlight function is very useful.

I want to install the tool by JS page rather than Special:Preferences. Is there any way do like this:

    if (wgCanonicalNamespace == "Module" or mw.config.get('wgPageName').match(/^User:.+\.(js|css)$/) ~= null) {
    	// Enable edit toolbar here
    }

I've been trying to add my father to your list of surviving WWII veterans completely without results. He served in both WWII and Korea in the US Navy and US Airforce. His name is William Arnold Pollen, MD. He was born on September 18, 1923 and was 92 in 2015. He is a retired Orthopedic Surgeon who was born and practiced in Perth Amboy, NJ. He currently lives in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kenspia52 (talkcontribs) 12:54, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Kenspia52: List of surviving veterans of World War II is only for people who have a Wikipedia biography and satisfy the conditions at Wikipedia:Notability (people). There may be more than 500,000 surviving US veterans of World War II. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:53, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    wiki page template

    Hello,

I read the FAQs on starting a new page and I read both of the suggested links. I did not see, however, an "edit" button or anything to open up a page editor. Do I need to search online for or provide my own wiki template and then upload it to the wizard? Or is there a page on this site that I should be working within and just "save changes" to the site?

Sorry, I'm a total noob at this learning to make a page for a celebrity friend and I imagine I'll be making a few of these in the future.

Thanks so much — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yacaughtme (talkcontribs) 17:13, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Yacaughtme: You may be looking for the article wizard. Before heading there, please read my first article and learn about how our conflict of interest policy may apply to you. Happy editing! -- samtar whisper 17:15, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

How to warn a non-registered editor for vandalism/unneeded removal of content?

Hi. A page I was watching was edited by an unknown user. He/she seems to be an inexperienced editor as the Infobox was heavily vandalized causing it to break into plain text. Relevant information was deleted and huge well-cited text was also removed intentionally. His/her IP address is 182.59.112.241 and has no talk page to post a warning. He/she has edited (or just deleted the content of) only two pages till date that too on the same day (28 Dec 2015). I have undone his/her edits. Is there a way to warn him/her? Here's the revision page after undoing his/her edits. — Deepak_HK@talk 18:38, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Hi Deepak_HK
IP users have talk pages like everyone else. User talk:182.59.112.241 will appear as a redlink until it has been edited, but if you click that link, you can post the same warnings there as on any other user talk page.
Having checked the address it is a static IP in Mumbai, so it may be the editors home computer, but it could be in a library, school, or internet café, so the user may use a different machine next time. - Arjayay (talk) 18:52, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hey there! You can go to the IP address talk page and leave them a warning. The standard way of doing this would be to make a new section on the talk page and insert the following text. {{subst:uw-vandalism1}} ~~~~. This will leave a level one warning for them, as well as your signature. A level one warning is a warning that assumes good faith and remindes the editor of some relevant Wikipedia policies. If they continue to vandalize, you would give them a level 2 warning (Same as above, but with a 2), and so on. If they have recieved a level 4 warning and still vandalized, you may want to report them to the AIV noticeboard - However, users must be sufficiently warned before they can be blocked. --allthefoxes (Talk) 18:48, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
First, there is a misconception that it is necessary to escalate vandalism warnings from level 1 through level 2 to level 3 to level 4 before there is a block. It is really all a matter of judgment. Admins will block when they think that a block is necessary. Second, do you have Twinkle? If so, it is easy to give a vandalism warning. If not, I suggest installing it. Robert McClenon (talk) 21:10, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks. — Deepak_HK@talk 18:57, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That assumes that they have a permanent IP address. Some providers give a long term lease, but not all. Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 20:59, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

How to add own labels in the Infobox?

Hi. I wanted to know if I could add my own label/template in the infobox which isn't predefined like image, map, population, etc. In brief, I wanted to add a field named "Jurisdiction" under the "government" template. Actually, I live in a city which has a part administered by a Municipal Corporation and the other by the city's planning body. So, I wanted to add the areas/nodes of the city which are only governed by the Corporation. How can I add a new field under the predefined templates? I hope the explanation is clear. Thanks. — Deepak_HK@talk 21:57, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Deepak HK. You would need to edit the definition of the template - this may or may not be easy to do (some parts of templates are straightforward, others are not). But in any case, I suggest discussing the change first on the template's talk page. --ColinFine (talk) 22:22, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. But it may be way too hard for me. I won't play with it just now. — Deepak_HK@talk 22:36, 28 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
