Route 201 commenced operating on 17 June 1995 between Mitcham Cricket Green and Tulse Hill station via Streatham replacing part of route 200. It was operated by London General's Merton garage.

Upon being re-tendered, the route passed to Mitcham Belle on 17 June 2000. It was extended at its northern end from to Herne Hill station on 9 June 2001, and at its southern end to Morden station on 1 December 2001.

Route 201 was included in the 27 August 2004 sale of the business to Centra.[1] When Centra ceased, the route passed to East Thames Buses' Mandela Way garage on 20 May 2006.

Route 201 was included in the 3 October 2009 sale of East Thames Buses to Go-Ahead London which included a five-year contract to operate route 201.[2][3][4][5] On 7 November 2009, it returned to Merton garage.[6]

Upon being re-tendered, the route passed to Abellio London's Beddington Cross garage on 4 October 2014.[7]
