June 2020[edit]

Information icon Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Surajpura, Rohtas a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. New stubs on Indian places[edit]

Hallo and thank you for the work you are putting in to creating new stubs for Indian villages. But there are a few problems with today's creations, starting with Gyanpur, Barhara.

There is an easy way to avoid linking to disambiguation pages: if you go to "Preferences", "Gadgets", and look under "Appearance" you'll see "Display links to disambiguation pages in orange" towards the bottom of the section. Select that tickbox, and whenever you Preview a page you'll be able to see whether you've accidentally linked to a disambiguation page. I find it really useful.
  • You have given a lot of the articles a disambiguated title such as Nathmalpur, Barhara even where there is no article at Nathmalpur. There is no special rule about Indian placenames which allows this (unlike United States places), so they should each be at the simple place name.
  • But where you need to disambiguate the title, as at Gyanpur, Barhara, then you must make sure that the reader can find the article when they search on Gyanpur. In this case it needed a hatnote (I've added it): in other cases it will be a matter of adding an entry in a disambiguation page. But there must be a route from the basic title to the new article, to help readers and also to reduce the chance that a future careless editor will accidentally create a duplicate article at a slightly different title. Thanks, and Happy Editing. PamD 13:06, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

--- Hi Pam, thanks for your concern and for the advice on displaying disambig links. I will definitely be using that from now on. Now for the fun part: going back and de-disambiguating all the links I left behind! As for the overly precise titles, I've been doing that intentionally to avoid potential naming conflicts with other villages in the same state or even district. You're right that in many cases this is unneccessary, so I'll go ahead and move the pages to more concise titles wherever appropriate.

Thanks again,

Jaunpur[edit]

Hi! I've had the the two moves reverted. I see your point here: the UP city is definitely the most significant topic with the name, but it has been at its title for a decade and a half. I'm not saying established titles are always OK – a lot of the time they're not – but if it's an established title and it's not on the sort of obscure topic that may have escaped editor attention for that long, then it's best to propose the move via an RM. At the very least, after a successful RM you'll be insured against people like me coming and speedily reverting it :)

As for Jaunpur specifically, one suggestion against a primary topic comes from the clickstream data, which shows that just at most one half of readers who land on the dab page end up clicking through to the article about the city. The precise figures for March (the last month for which I've got easily accessible data), are 52 for that city, 32 for the sultanate, and 10 each for its district and for Tehri Garhwal (the two constituencies don't figure here, which means they've received fewer than 10 hits each). – Uanfala (talk) 14:44, 1 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion[edit]

Hello 3 kids in a trenchcoat,

Thanks for your great contributions!

You've written a good many articles about the villages and places in India and continuing to contribute more, why don't you consider putting in a request for WP:Autopatrolled right as you regularly create pages and we find pretty much no issues with your creations. This really would help reduce the workload of WP:New page review in some ways. So do mull over it and if you wish to apply, click here.--Umakant Bhalerao (talk) 06:39, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I will go ahead and do as you suggest. Thanks 3 kids in a trenchcoat (talk) 20:55, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, this newly created Redirect points to an non-existing article, can you check where you wanted it to point to before it gets tagged CSD G8. Thanks for your edits. JW 1961 Talk 18:52, 17 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, I see you have now created an article to fix the redlink in the redirect - all is good! JW 1961 Talk 18:55, 17 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrolled granted[edit]

Hi 3 kids in a trenchcoat, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the "autopatrolled" permission to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the autopatrolled right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. However, you should consider adding relevant wikiproject talk-page templates, stub-tags and categories to new articles that you create if you aren't already in the habit of doing so, since your articles will no longer be systematically checked by other editors (User:Evad37/rater and User:SD0001/StubSorter.js are useful scripts which can help). Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! Jake Wartenberg (talk) 21:06, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

December 2021[edit]

Information icon Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Daulatpur, Uttar Pradesh a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Daulatpur, Kadipur. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases for registered users, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). Thank you. Repeated references[edit]

Hi, first of all, I believe it's quite admirable that you take the time to consistently make major additions with good sources. I wanted to point out that you don't have to add the same reference (with the same page number) after every sentence. Instead, if several consecutive sentences are supported by the same page of the same source, I suggest you add a single inline citation after the last consecutive sentence that is backed up by that source. The overrepetition of inline citations may bloat the reference section with a large amount of reference indices. (I hope that's the correct terminology; it's, you know, the list that goes from a to z and beyond for repeated citations in the reference list.) This may make it appear to unrelated editors that the article largely relies on a single source. You might additionally want to integrate the page number within the references, instead of using Template:Rp, so that in the reference section, we will be able to view the page numbers, which will prevent the clutter of large amounts of reference indices. I am looking forward to more of your great contributions! Aintabli (talk) 04:51, 4 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Aintabli Thank you! I know my practice of citing every sentence is less than ideal -- not only does it clutter up the reference section like you mention, but I suspect it also can be intimidating for readers. I know it would be for me.

My main reason for doing this is that I want to make sure it's clear where every piece of information is coming from. Sometimes when trying to add new content to an article, I'll come across a paragraph and only see the one reference tag at the end, and that makes me hesitant about inserting new content into the middle of that paragraph. So my citing every sentence is in order to save someone that headache in the future (whether that's me or someone else). And also because it makes it more convenient to check if I got something wrong or misinterpreted what they're originally saying.

But yeah, there's got to be a better way to do that. I'll have to try playing around with different templates and see what works best for me. Or actually what I might end up doing is just putting a comment with the page number inside after sentences so that it shows up in edit mode but not when you're just reading the article.

Anyway, sorry about the rant. Thanks for your concern and suggestion, and I also look forward to seeing more of your edits too!

    Wishing you the best,
    3 kids in a trenchcoat (talk) 05:03, 8 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I actually believe that it is okay to specify the page number in the reference, but when for example, we have two sentences "The house is up the hill.[1]:4 There is a tree next to the house.[1]:4", we can instead write "The house is up the hill. There is a tree next to the house.[1]:4". So, we basically remove the identical reference coming before. However, if the first and second sentences come from different pages, your style is okay. In that case, it would be like "The house is up the hill.[1]:4 There is a tree next to the house.[1]:19." If I have confused you in my first comment, sorry. Perhaps, I could word it better. As far as I can see in your latest edits, you are commenting out the page numbers. What I meant was you can just merge identical references with the same page numbers into one. Editors will look at the nearest reference from left to right, so you should be good if one sentence lacks a reference right after it ends, because editors will correctly assume that the statement is supported by the closest reference. Thank you for your cooperation. Aintabli (talk) 04:16, 11 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notability requirements for populated places[edit]

Please note that the notability quideline at Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features) states that Census tracts, Abadi, and other areas not commonly recognized as a place (such as the area in an irrigation district) are not presumed to be notable. This means that such places must have received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject in order to be deemed notable and avoid being deleted. Donald Albury 22:39, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Donald Albury I assume this is referring to Baghai, Firozabad (census code 125443), Rampur, Tundla (census code 125462), etc.? Those are full-fledged villages and not census tracts; they shouldn't have any trouble meeting the "populated, legally recognized places" criterion for notability as it currently stands. The "census code" thing is just there as a clunky way of distinguishing between multiple villages in the same subdivision that have the same name. (I've seen this done elsewhere, e.g. Barwa, Narkatiaganj (census code 216634); I think I've also seen similar disambiguations done by using the places' coordinates, which is also kind of awkward but might avoid these kinds of issues.)
Anyway, we can definitely rename the articles if that helps at all. Let me know if you have any preference.
    Thanks,
    3 kids in a trenchcoat (talk) 02:46, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
