Speedy delete removal

Why did you delete the Speedy deletion A7 at Son of No One (film)? Only administrators may remove them after reviewing them, and your name is not included on the list. Could you not remove valid speedy delete tags? 暴鯉龍 is not a feasible search term and was only made by an individual who has made questionable edits concerning the topic. The Good Shepherd "Stellar cast"

In the info box for this article, under "Starring" there is a list of 10 stars of the film world, each one of which has unquestionably been a star of the film world in his or her own right for a good few years now. As you did not remove these from the infobox, I fail to see how it can be non-neutral to call this a stellar cast. Jodosma (talk) 17:09, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Bueno, el problema está es en que el logo de la telenovela aparece como "Mi Corazón es Tuyo", anteriormente había hecho algunos traslados y había colocado los títulos en español en minúsculas, como dice esa regla de wikipedia, pero me revirtieron, así que no insistí y tuve problema por eso. Ahora si va a trasladar ese título, ¿por qué solo ese?, si las reglas se deben hacer cumplir para uno, se deben hacer cumplir para todos, hay muchos artículos de telenovelas mexicanas etc, que están en mayúsculas y nadie ha hecho nada.--Damián80 (talk) 01:31, 11 July 2014 (UTC)
Estoy de acuerdo que las reglas se deben hacer cumplir igualmente para todos los artículos. Pues a mí me parece que todos los artículos de telenovelas latinas deben estar en minúsculas. En la categoría Category:Mexican telenovelas veo que muchos ya están así, aunque muchos otros no lo están.

Oh claro, Reina de Corazones, La Malquerida, En Otra Piel, si miras en el historial verás lo que digo. Voy a trasladar las páginas En Otra Piel y Mi Corazón es Tuyo de regreso a los títulos en minúsculas, y en el resumen de edición incluiré un vínculo a la página de Wikipedia:Naming conventions. Thank you for helping me learn how to make edits that are more controversial than your usual grammar fix! I definitely missed that endnote on MOS/LEAD. But, I'm still a tad confused, and was hoping you could help. You say " we should not 'violate Wikipedia:Neutral point of view by giving undue attention to less important controversies in the lead section.'" How do we weigh the "importance" of controversies? I'm just confused b/c the president of the United States, who was a faculty member at UChicago, said this is a major issue and in turn established a task force. Hmm. I'm not sure if I can give an exact level of importance that I think is sufficient for inclusion in the lead, but here's a possible litmus test: if a controversy is a major part of what the article's subject is known for, then that controversy probably deserves to be in the lead. For example, Wikipedia's article about Richard Nixon mentions Watergate in the lead—as it rightly should, because Watergate was a defining part of Nixon's presidency.
For a controversy to be worth mentioning in the very first paragraph of the article, I think it would have to be the primary reason for the subject's notability. Monica Lewinsky, for instance. —Mr. Granger (talk · contribs) 23:26, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

Ese tipo de información me parece raro a mí también cuando es el único dato sobre el personaje que está incluído. Hola, disculpe que te moleste otra vez; pero desearía saber si le puedes explicar al usuario ElNiñoMonstruo sobre los traslados de títulos a mayúsculas, es que como tu hablas mejor el inglés, y yo no, pues tal vez me pueda entender o no, pero hay un cierto problema con éste usuario y es que cree que yo solo lo molesto y me creo dueño de wikipedia. El mismo día en el que fui bloqueado vi que hizo una gran cantidad de traslados en artículos de telenovelas; pido tu ayuda porque se que este usuario le gusta generar guerras de ediciones y no desearía ganarme otro bloqueo más. hace poco inició una guerras de ediciones en el artículo de A Vida da Gente, y otro usuario tuvo que revertirlo. ALS charity table

Hi there Mr. G, I just reached out to a number of other charities on Twitter (MDA, Les Turner Foundation, Project ALS) hoping to get some more data from them on how much has been donated. The problem with the text (some of which I wrote) is that it's hard to parse, hard to update. Hi PaulWicks. I appreciate the work, but let me explain why I find the table confusing. The table throws a bunch of numbers together, but it's not very clear what those numbers mean or how they're relevant to the Ice Bucket Challenge. In contrast, the prose gives context and explains the importance of the numbers, and it also includes some information (such as the number of new donors to the ALS Association) that is left out of the table. As a side note, I don't see the importance of the Charity Navigator information at all. —Mr. Granger (talk · contribs) 19:19, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
There's a new controversy breaking specifically about the allocation of dollars to research. Some people are suggesting we don't donate to the ALS charities because of it. I've been in ALS research since 2002 so trying to provide citable sources. If the CN scores aren't helpful I still feel a table is more useful. --PaulWicks (talk) 19:21, 29 August 2014 (UTC)
Well, if that controversy is worth discussing in the article, maybe the CN information could be included as part of it.
I still think the table alone is confusing because it lacks context, and it leaves out valuable information. Here's a possible compromise: what if we cut down the prose you removed to just one paragraph, to give context and emphasize the importance of the increase in donations, and include a table as well to give more numerical information? —Mr. Granger (talk · contribs) 19:25, 29 August 2014 (UTC)

Dead link templates

Sometimes when by the end of the month I don't have a proper url, I just update them that way. The thing is, is that by the end of the month (for example August) there is 2000 dead links. Its much easier to find an article which can be fixed by breaking 2000 a month by lets say a 100. Is it wrong to do? I don't see consensus objecting to it. I bet there was a lot of dead links in 2006, now they have been either fixed or being moved to 2008, makes sense?--Mishae (talk) 02:25, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

O.K. Lets just say that I was planning to do it in September but because of some fixes I decide it to do it in August, and a week before September. Then, someone told me that when it comes to cite news templates all the refs suppose to carry work instead of publisher, so to fulfill my edit I decide to do this plus that. I don't see anything wrong here. I didn't ruin the article did I? If not, then this concern should be off the table. Maybe I annoy you when I do such edits, but for that I should tell you this: consensus have agreed to look closely at editors who remove more then 500 kb, not the ones that do 5-20 kb. Let me explain where I'm coming from. My understanding is that the purpose of the "date" parameter is to indicate when the link was identified as dead. If editors change the date after the tag has been placed, then the parameter can no longer serve this function. For this reason, it seems to me that the date shouldn't be changed—but I'm open to reconsidering that opinion if there's a good reason for changing the date. Well is there is a rule that prohibits date change? I haven't seen it. Besides, I remember that one day I changed the date of the dead link, and another user came in and put the working link. Recent example can be found here: My assumption is that most editors (as your edit suggests), look through recently added dead links rather then the old ones. Another one of your edits here implies that changing date is beneficial. So, yeah, in my opinion you should reconsider that option. So if I understand you correctly, you're saying that you change the dates on dead link templates so that editors are more likely to fix them quickly. The evidence you gave suggests that this works. However, I still oppose changing the dates, for the following two reasons: (1) The reason I sometimes patrol the most recent monthly category at the beginning of the month is because I want to fix links that were just identified—not because I want to fix links that were identified some time ago but have had their date changed. (Incidentally, I spend most of my time fixing old dead links, not the most recent ones. So just because a link is labeled as from a previous month doesn't mean it will never get fixed—it just means that other links might get fixed before it.) (2) More importantly, changing the date in the template reduces its value as a tool to determine how long a link has been identified as dead.

Don't know, but we can try. I assume it will be another, "I care, I don't care" type of debate. Now, another thing to mention, is that I don't just change the date, but I also do other edits to it as well. As I said previously a lot of links say from 2006 were either fixed or be merged into 2008. I see 1000 links for August 2013, I see 2000 for August 2014, and its get claustrophobic to find a specific dead link when they are labeled as dead 1000 or 2000 per month, per month! So, if I wont find a substitute for a dead link, I think I should at least move it to a place where users like yourself can find a way to fix it. Have a problem with it? If so, lets definitely open a discussion but I am afraid that either I will get blocked, despite my good edits and reputation here, or I will be forced to obey you, under sanctions of being blocked. As I said before, we can open a discussion but I am afraid that the result will be negative. Before I will do so, lets ask user @Ironholds: for a third opinion, since I trust him. I believe that he will be neutral to the subject, and it will be better for me and you as well. Huh; it didn't ping me for some reason. Mr. Granger is correct; the purpose of the "date" part of the tag is to identify when the deadlink was created. This enables a couple of behavioural patterns and a couple of tracking mechanisms. The most important of these is that it allows us to divide problematic articles into chunks, categorised by how long they have been a problem for. If I am going to fix 10 deadlinks, it is more useful to fix deadlinks from the back of the queue than the front, because more readers have been exposed to them and they have been an issue for longer: it is slightly more critical. McGill Rose Garden

Thank you for your suggestion to add photos to McGill Rose Garden . When I wrote the article I actually talked to their board of directors. They liked the article but were not interested in sharing any of their own photos from their official web site.

Here is a page that leads to many excellent photos of McGill Rose Garden. I am sure that some of these photos are in the public domain but I do not know how to document that.

I also appears that the upload wizard has now made it even harder to declare a photo to be in the public domain (unless it is published by the US govt).

Here is another photo which I suspect is in the public domain but I cannot prove it.

Hmm. Those are nice photos, but I don't see any evidence that they're in the public domain. Usually, unless a photo is very old or its creator explicitly releases it into the public domain, it's not public domain (with some notable exceptions such as works of the US government, as you mentioned). I think the easiest way to get an image would be for a Wikipedian who lives near Charlotte to take a picture and release that picture under a suitable license (e.g., CC-BY-SA). Map - Ages of consent in Europe

Hi. I see that you uploaded a map at Ages of consent in Europe (a cropped version of the main map). I wanted to ask you if you could create a new map with different colors - the discussion goes back to the main map from Ages of consent about how an earlier map showed almost all ages in different shades of blue, but the shades were very close to one another and difficult to distinguish. Because of this, a new map was created. The map still uses close shades of the same colors, but this is because it has no other choice due to all ages going from 12 to 21, and 'puberty' as an age, and 'illegal outside of marriage', and 'varies by state/province'. But this map for Europe only has 6 ages - 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18. IMO it is not normal that four of them are blue (close shades which may make it difficult to distinguish). Six diffrent colors can be easily found (eg, blue, green, yellow, red, orange, violet). I wonder if you could do this.2A02:2F0A:506F:FFFF:0:0:BC19:AA8C (talk) 10:07, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

I definitely see the value of having easily distinguishable colors—but on the other hand, I think there's also some value to having the same color scheme on every page that uses a variation of this map (Ages of consent in Africa, Ages of consent in South America, Ages of consent in North America, Ages of consent in Europe, Age of consent, and maybe others). Right. The fact remains, though, that quoting such a large amount of material is a (borderline) copyright violation, and including it without explicitly labeling it as a quote is certainly plagiarism. In addition, Urban Dictionary is not a reliable source, and should generally not be used to support material in articles. And on top of all of that, I don't even think that including such a long list of the idiosyncrasies of Malayali English is good for the article (but that's open to debate). Not a complaint, just a question. In this edit you removed the reference to the Yahoo Answers site. Normally, of course, that is quite right - we should not cite discussion forums like that. But in that case someone on the site has quoted (in full so far as I can see - I think it's quite reasonable to assume good faith there) the whole of Evans' ODNB biography, which is otherwise only directly accessible by subscription - [4]. Hi Ghmyrtle. Thanks for bringing this up. In my opinion, if we want to cite ODNB, we should just cite ODNB, not an unreliable source that quotes it. WP:Citing sources says "When offering convenience links, it is important to be reasonably certain that the convenience copy is a true copy of the original, without any changes or inappropriate commentary, and that it does not infringe the original publisher's copyright." It's impossible for a reader to know whether the Yahoo Answers page is an accurate copy of the original ODNB biography without actually checking the ODNB biography themself. In addition, it seems to me that the Yahoo Answers page is almost certainly a violation of ODNB's copyright (see also WP:COPYLINK). So the citation fails both of the conditions I quoted.

Stop pretending to speak for "the reader"

I'm glad to hear that because we do not "have the ability to change [our] settings", the slow, useless, piece of crap that is media viewer should be forced on us. For what it's worth, people without accounts can disable Media Viewer, but it wasn't available for months and it has a nasty habit of opting us back in. But really, this demonstrates you have insufficient knowledge of the issue to chime in on this matter. You probably haven't seen the surveys where the WMF couldn't even get a majority of "readers" to say Media Viewer was even USEFUL for viewing images, let alone preferable to the file pages. You probably haven't seen that not a single "reader" who chimed in in any of these discussions supports keeping it. You probably haven't seen the page on mediawiki.org where every "reader" that has written condemns the Media Viewer. Then you are not reading the content correctly. There are exceptions, read the Manual of Style page heading, not just a sub-head. Drop your lecturing tone and contribute to the encyclopedia in a positive way, instead of constant nit-picking edits. Commons File

You recently made a change on my user page. I was under the impression (possibly false) than only the creator of the user page (or a Wikipedia administrator) could make such changes. I don't think I ever wrote on anyone's user page (at least I don't remember), sticking only to writing on user talk pages. Although I have contributed to Wikipedia for several years, there are still many things I don't know, and would like to understand. Would you mind explaining the change you made on my user page regarding the photograph of Mt. Lafayette. Did the name of the photo change? Or did I get the name wrong in the first place? Did I accidentally misuse the photo or its title? I want to understand these matters. Can editors make changes on user pages in the interest of correcting an error?

The above questions remind me of a tangentially related question the answer to which I suspect you would know. I am looking for photos for a book I am writing but I have no budget to pay for photographs, for example, from Getty Images, Magnum Photos, etc. Are there photos in the commons files that I could use at no charge, provided of course that I acknowledge the photographer?

Hi Iss246. I recently moved the photo in question to Wikimedia Commons, with a new name. As a result, Wikipedia's local copy was deleted, and the inclusion of the image on your userpage would have stopped working if I hadn't edited the page to link to the new address of the file. In other words, I wasn't making any substantive changes to your user page, just using the new copy of the same file. I hope this is clear—feel free to ask for clarification.
In response to your second question, yes! All Commons files (assuming they haven't been misidentified or otherwise uploaded in error) are freely usable. Some of their licenses (such as the GFDL and CC-BY-SA) require you to release derivative works under the same license. Others (such as CC-BY) only require you to acknowledge the photographer or artist. And others (CC-0 and public domain) don't require anything at all. I think that the screen shot of bdB's page is not needed in the article, or even the link to its page. BdB is essentially an illegal site in the US because it doesn't even follow the minimal rules for a "financial institution." There's no need for us to promote the company in any way. I was just concerned with the undue weight given in the lead to a recent, brief incident. I'm skeptical about whether information about the recent disruption should be included in the article at all, but I figured I'd leave that to the judgment of other editors.
