John Fyfe's son
Hi there - I have just created a brief stub on John Fyfe who represented Scotland at international level. My source makes mention that his son represented Scotlanf at rugby - it doesn't mention his name, and it doesn't mention his code. However I suspect it is Ken Fyfe - his place of birth matches with the Fyfe family moving to India. Can anyone confirm either way? Please ping me if so. Thanks in advance! - @Dd: I'm always looking to collaborate, but my main problem is that I don't have all the sources that I'd like. If my personal library was larger I'd definitely edit articles that I don't bother with at the moment. And unfortunately I'm limited to writing in English -- so I can't help with translations either! Copy-editing and formatting are things I can do most easily. But I hate to say I've not had much luck with collaborating with other RU-focused editors; I've had the odd fruitful one, but I think many people are focused on more current events oriented articles than I am. -- Shudde talk 09:35, 6 July 2015 (UTC)

Will Green
Would someone please check the recent edits by an IP who has used some very confident edit summaries. If the IP's edits should be retained, the height needs to be fixed:

Winning streaks in international matches
I'm looking for any views on when a "winning streak" in international fixtures ends. I changed the winning streaks on the Australia v England article so that the streak end date is the date of the final win, rather than the next defeat. For example - Australia's record winning streak is 4 games, which took place on 3/11/84, 23/5/87, 29/5/88 and 12/6/88 - the streak end date is shown as 5/11/88, which is the date of England's next win. To me, the winning streak ended on 12th June 1988, but the change has been reverted so that the streak continues to 5th November 1988 - it seems a bit absurd to run a "winning streak" to a date past the last win - does anyone have any opinions either way? --Bcp67 (talk) 20:13, 5 October 2015 (UTC)
- I think it would depend on the way it is phrased. For the above, I think one would say "Australia had a four-game winning streak from 3/11/1984 to 12/6/1988", but you would also say "Australia's four-game winning streak ended on 5/11/1988, when they lost to England". In the article you specified, which simply indicates the date range of the winning streak, it would be similar to the former, so ending on 12/6/1988 would be correct and I fully agree with your interpretation. Hey guys, I'm hoping to help create atricles on red links on list of All Black representatives. I've created one already and I've got another in the making. I felt a bit stink when Paora added the All Black Id and number to my first article which I probably could've done myself. This might be a silly question, but if someone could fill me in on how to add the All Black ID in the infobox?? The All Black ID is just the number in the URL for the player page on the AB website, e.g. for Mickey Kiernan, the URL for his profile is http://stats.allblacks.com/ASP/Profile.asp?ABID=458 so his All Black ID for the infobox is 458, while his All Black number is 99. National team infoboxes
Apparently there is a new Template:Infobox national rugby team. Were others aware of this? I am seeing it popping up in certain national team articles. Some aspects of it seem like improvements over the prior version, but I'm not thrilled about other aspects of it. CUA 27 (talk) 03:52, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

- To be clear, I like a number of the changes: (1) adds the current/best/worst rankings, which are highly relevant; (2) removes all those distracting flags, and (3) changes "coaches" to "head coach", which is good, because we don't need to lard up the infobox with a whole bunch of assistants. - But I have the following concerns regarding information of little use added to the infobox that does little more than add clutter: (1) the confederation doesn't need to be there, as confederations don't mean much in rugby. (2) The location of the biggest win/defeat doesn't seem important enough to add to the infobox. (3) We don't need to add the trigramme, that is not key information that most fans are looking for. - If others agree to your opinion CUA 27, we then need to start making changes to the current template and cleaning up most of the national sides articles. Only thing I would disagree with is your idea of not having the location of the biggest win/defeat. - Kidsoljah — Thanks for the response. I'm glad you are fine with two of the three changes I mentioned. On the third change, however, regarding location of the biggest win/loss, I don't see the value. If Spain defeats some poor team by 100 points, I don't see why the location of the game is so important as to go into the infobox. What does it matter if Spain's 100 point win is home or away? If at home, what does it matter whether the game was in Madrid, or Barcelona, or Sevilla, and do we need to link to those cities? CUA 27 (talk) 03:06, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
- CUA 27, you have a valid point, I agree with you on not having the link to the cities, I think that can be left out. But I still personally and strongly think that they should be mentioned because some readers like myself would want to know where some matches are played. - Re the point your're discussing – in my opinion, a lot of people are trying to cram too much into the infobox. Personally, I feel the opposition and scoreline would suffice in the infobox. Yet, this should also be mentioned in the article itself, where is can provide much more information, such as the date, the venue, the competition and points scorers. - I agree. There is already a fair amount of detail in the infobox, and saving details for the article text is the better approach. I'd prefer we include the score and date, but not location. If people want to know these details, they can read the article. (If these details are not important enough to be included in the article, they shouldn't be in the infobox either, per Help:Infobox. Rugby sevens national team names
Is there a reason why the national rugby sevens teams are listed at Foo national rugby union team (sevens) instead of Foo national rugby sevens team? This would match the article at Rugby sevens instead of Rugby union sevens or Rugby union (sevens) etc. I was considering proposing a move but thought I would get some input from the project before hand. Any suggestions? With the olympics this year, it would probably make the articles easier to find for people not familiar with rugby union pages. Mattlore (talk) 19:58, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

- The reason why those articles are where they are is because there is also a sevens form of rugby league (see rugby league sevens), and the league lot are an uppity bunch who, in the past, have objected to the assumption that rugby union is the superior code of the game (which it is). I don't know where I personally stand on the issue, but I do agree that there should be a mass discussion. Someone will need to post a discussion notice on the talk page of every single national sevens team article, and it may even be advisable to post on the rugby league WikiProject talk page. - According to Rugby League World Sevens, that tournament is a) defunct and b) not actually play by countries, but by club sides. There is a Latino Rugby League Sevens tournament, the country links on that page point to the main rugby league national teams, not to sevens teams. So for the time being anyway, there shouldn't be a clash if those naming conventions are used. However, if the proposed naming convention prove to be a non-runner, I would suggest an alternative of Foo national rugby union sevens team. - I don't think the fact that Rugby League Sevens exists is a problem. The articles for the sports are Rugby league sevens and Rugby sevens. USA Rugby -- hatnote
There is a dispute over at USA Rugby about whether to add a WP:Hatnote, and if so, what the hatnote should point to. There is an editor (active under different IPs that has made the same revert four times) who is quite insistent that the USA Rugby article must include a hatnote and that the hatnote must point to USA Rugby League. Eastern Counties
I think I've found a hole in Wiki - see e.g. David Emms, who played for that select team. Eastern Counties in that article points to a DAB page full of irrelevancies. IIRC (it was a bit before my time) there were several regional rugby teams, including Eastern Counties, who played regular (annual?) representative matches. Eastern Counties 1 and so on may be successors to the name, but are not the same thing at all. I doubt Eastern Counties (rugby) deserves an article, but British regional rugby union teams (or amateur competitions, or competitive drinking, or something) might. - If they meet WP:GNG they will warrant an article. I know many regional selections were considered first-class and would be considered very notable. The fact that they no longer hold that status is irrelevant as notability is not temporary (see WP:NTEMP). I would happily help but I have no sources. From memory there are probably a number of French regional/national selections that would also be notable, as during the amateur era touring teams generally played them and not club sides. - Definitely merit an article. Eastern Counties is one of the county rugby unions which are "constituent bodies" of the RFU. They aren't the same as the "Western Counties" etc which used to play representative games against touring sides and were formed of players from various county sides. Eastern Counties adminster the game in Norfolk, Suffolk & Cambridgeshire and used to include Essex until they split off. They are still very much active and are the same sort of body & team as Lancashire Rugby Football Union, North Midlands Rugby Football Union and so on. I've created a few articles on the RFU county bodies and I'll have a look at starting one out for Eastern Counties. Just thought I'd notify members of the project that the above rugby player has been put up for AfD at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2016 May 20#Seb Adeniran-Olule. It's true that there's virtually nothing to the article at present, but as he appears to have played for Harlequins a couple of times, he might pass notability requirements if some more information can be found about him... the article isn't tagged for WikiProject Rugby Union so the AfD won't appear on the project's alerts listing. France Sevens (adding European results)
This is me thinking, but what about merging the Lyon Sevens and the France Sevens into one article as there is a massive gap of 10 years between the last French tournament and the current international tournament. Of course I would like some thoughts on this as we have got Singapore Sevens and the China Sevens merged together so why not merge the French tournaments. - Yes, for mine, it's probably okay to do that so long as certain conditions are satisfied. It provides one overview page per nation, rather than scattered amongst several articles.
- As an aside, at least for the past 10 years or so, there seems to be a pattern for a maximum of one main international sevens tournament a year per World Rugby member (i.e. country) – be it a World Series event or the next step down at continental series level. I'm happy to be corrected on this. Maybe Hong Kong might have been a rare exception on an occasion or two, but even there, the main tournament has been hosted every year since the early 1970s and there is no doubt as to the premier event status.
- In a similar vein, the events hosted from 1986 to 1988 at Concord Oval in Sydney were the premier international sevens tournaments in Australia during that period, with national teams from New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Scotland, Wales, and so on, competing.
- It makes a bit of sense for the main tournament hosted within a country (be it on the world circuit or the relevant continental circuit) to be summarised on one page, e.g. the regular international sevens tournament alternating between Shanghai and Beijing, (in some years these were on the Asian Sevens Series circuit) are grouped under China Sevens. Of course, only events on the World Series should be formatted with a blue box around the year.
- I was involved with editing the Singapore Sevens results to include international sevens tournaments within the Asian Sevens series; it just made easy sense as all events were being referred to as the Singapore Sevens. -- Ham105 (talk) 04:45, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

I propose that rugby union squad navboxes should contain colors. Many navboxes have color in them, particularly and obviously to show their teams colors. All NBA and NFL navboxes are colored and they're high class notable. Personally I don't know why rugby navboxes aren't allowed color.

- What does adding colours do that makes the article better? - No one is suggesting turning articles into cavalcades of colour, only the navboxes. Personally, I find it useful to be able to identify an appropriate navbox immediately by the colours used in the title bar. As the OP suggested, it works very well for NFL and NBA articles, and I can confirm it looks fine on soccer and cricket articles too. As long as the colours used are appropriate and don't cause accessibility issues, I don't see why we shouldn't reinstate the colours to rugby navboxes (not sure about infoboxes though!). – PeeJay 12:45, 31 July 2016 (UTC)
- User:Kidsoljah, others within WP:RU, perhaps even those you've discussed navbox issues with, have created rugby navboxes in the past which have been deleted from the encylopedia. You (or them or me) may think something is good, but doesn't mean you (or them or me) is right. If you don't know why, for example, a stack of ten navboxes lit up in multicolours might flag an issue then refer to MOS:NAVBOXCOLOR point 5: "If an article includes several navboxes whose colors conflict with each other, discretion should be used to minimize the disruption by using the default colors for navboxes". WP:RU is just a group of rugby editors, guided by the Wikipedia:Manual of Style like any other editors. I agree the navboxes should have colour, makes them look better and all other sports I can see (football, cricket, NFL, NBA for a start) have them. Makes rugby look very odd and conservative to not have boxes with colour.Skeene88 (talk) 13:12, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

Fiji ranking

I just commented on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Giorgi Pruidze. He played for Georgia at the 2015 Rugby World Cup. In evaluating WP:NRU I see it hasn't been updated for the 2015 World Cup. I don't have the knowledge to make sure that the correct update is made and technically that the update should be made, but looks to me someone with the knowledge should. - They have now been split into 2 tiers.
- Tier One (the 10 Six Nations/Rugby Championship Unions): England France Italy Ireland Scotland Wales + Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa
- Tier Two (the other 10 RWC qualified Unions): For the moment for the 2019 World Cup they are Georgia and Japan.
- This definition is floating and the players enter and leave the notability status depending on when you look at the qualified teams. I have initiated a discussion on this talk page Wikipedia_talk:Notability_(sports)#NRU_update_High_performance_unions. to address the situation and would appreciate input from others. Rugby union / Rugby sevens at the Olympics
I have just realised there are some horrible inconsistencies across articles and templates as to whether Rugby union at the Summer Olympics and Rugby sevens at the Summer Olympics constitute the same sport. The latter article seems to regard it as such, but the former article (despite the hatnote) includes the 2016 results. Also, Template:Rugby at the Summer Olympics puts them together, while Template:Sports at the Olympics keeps them separate. Which one should it be? StAnselm (talk) 04:50, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
- @StAnselm: If you ask me I think Rugby sevens at the Summer Olympics is basically just a fork of Rugby union at the Summer Olympics. The later was created and expanded many years ago, and includes much more information about the efforts to include rugby sevens than does the forked article (although it does need updating). - Rugby is a common name for any variation of rugby union in most countries. "Sevens" is used to distinguish it from the 15-a-side form, but both are variations of the same sport. Both are variations of rugby union as opposed to variations of rugby league. The Olympics site calls the 15-a-side form "rugby union" and the seven-a-side form "rugby sevens", but most reliable sources would probably not distinguish them in that way. 1910 New Zealand Maori tour
Would the 1910 New Zealand Maori team be notable for an article? I understand there were similar tours of New Zealand and Australia by sides in 1913 and 1923 but since this was the first "official" team selected would this be worthy?
During the tour they played 2 games against the American Universities team who were also touring Australia at the time. This can/could be added to the History section of Rugby in the U.S. Just a thought. Sirpottingmix (talk) 03:57, 1 April 2017 (UTC)

I posted something similar at the New Zealand noticeboard and I think it's probably a good idea to add something here as well. I have nominated Joe Warbrick as a FAC -- see here -- and would really appreciate any comments or feedback that editors here can provide. On a more general note; I rarely, if ever, see rugby related articles at FAC, and I can't remember the last time I saw a member of this project reviewing or nominating articles at FAC (I know PeeJay2K3 (talk · contribs) has had a couple of FAs; and FruitMonkey (talk · contribs) did nearly all of the work on Arthur Gould (rugby union); also FunkyCanute (talk · contribs) nominated an article last year I think). But at the moment the project is struggling to produce the 365 new Featured Articles per year we require to have a new article featured on the front page everyday (see discussion at WT:TFA on this problem). FAC lacks reviewers and also nominations. So this is a plea for people to get involved there. Please don't be intimidated by it; it's basically a peer review (with specific criteria). If someone wants to collaborate on a potential FA, or has an article they've worked on that they think may be appropriate, then do let me know. Collaboration does make it easier, and I've been through the process a few times now so have some experience on what's required to get an article through. Any comments, questions thoughts? High Performance Unions omission?
I've just been looking over the High Performance Unions list at WP:RU/N and I think I have noticed an omission there. Shouldn't we also include the British and Irish Lions in that? I know they're not a Union per se, however not all their players (particuarly not in the early days) played for the national team before being chosen to represent the British Isles on tour, which means that some of the articles on the early Lions under the current criteria might not survive an AFD. Likewise we could probably include Barbarian F.C. in there too, but clarify only for matches against international sides. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 07:54, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

- Hi @The C of E:, as far as I'm aware (and I absolutely stand to be corrected), rugby tens mainly played by amateur players, and there are no international tournaments where countries play each other. While the governing body World Rugby have released official rules for rugby tens (and rugby twelves, for that matter), I don't think they officially sanction or recognise any of the matches. If all of that is correct (and I am not sure it is), then I don't think anyone would be deemed eligible from rugby tens exploits alone. TheMightyPeanut (talk) 02:35, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Lists of matches between Tier 1 nations and WP:SALORDER
I don't know if anyone here is aware of the articles that fall into a similar category to History of rugby union matches between Australia and Wales, but the vast majority of them are in the incorrect order per WP:SALORDER, which states that all chronological list should be in the order earliest-to-latest. I'm willing to go through the ones relating to Wales and correct the order, but there are quite a few and I'll need some help from the rest of you. Who's in? – PeeJay 23:28, 1 October 2017 (UTC)

- Some of those were pretty small. Japan v South Africa had one game, most Georgia pages had 5, etc. It's just the Six Nations and Rugby Championship teams that had a lot of matches. TheMightyPeanut (talk)

Clarity on women's rugby
I was wondering if we could clarify WP:RU/N on the issue of women players as the current notability guidelines seem a bit misleading. It starts off by saying a player is notable if "he or she...." and then lists the requirements. However, on section 4 of that, it then goes on to mention only women players who have played in the WRWC semis are notable. Could someone please clarify if we're using the same criteria as for men or if it is just the narrower WRWC criteria that we are using? The C of E God Save the Queen! - The C of E, if any of the four criteria are met the player is presumed notable. I'll admit I do not follow women's rugby as closely as the men's (less TV coverage mainly) but the fourth clause seems to have been entered because a player could meet only the fourth criteria, which would still make her eligible for a page. Notability of women RU players in England
Hi all. The article Maeve Liston has come up at DYK here. Are there any guidelines to notability here - I don't believe the league is fully professional (please tell me if I'm wrong!) and so players won't automatically pass WP:NRU#2, and so WP:GNG applies - this player's references are very vague and I can't even find reference to her playing a game for Bristol this season (only appearing on the bench a couple of times, but no info further). Samoa vs World Rugby
November 2017 I hear that Samoa national rugby union team is bankrupt. However now World Rugby is claiming that the Samoan Rugby Union is not bankrupt. I am not sure who is telling the truth. The article probably should be edited by someone with more knowledge of this situation. Below is a BBC Sport article about it.

Both RugbyData.com and ItsRugby.co.uk websites appear to be very out of date. RugbyData's most recent results are the 2016 six nations.
